Were there no poorpeople then?Where were these people whenJan Smuts Airport was renamed ORTambo Airport?The very same people who nowtalk of Limpopo, Gauteng,Polokwane and so forth withoutthinking twice about it are nowfrothing at the mouth because PortElizabeth is now given an Africanname that represents the people andthe language of origin in that area.Some, like the DA mayor ofNelson Mandela Bay, NqabaBhanga, believe that, “While notdisputing the need for geographicalnames that portray an inclusivecountry, I believe these names haveno relation to and/or connection toIN TOUCHPhumelele P Hlatithe people of our metro.” He wenton to say many other things abouthow the name itself has no meaning.As I listened to him on radio, Icringed at the nonsense he spewedwith such breathtaking confidence.I waited for at least one of theradio presenters to ask him inisiXhosa: “he mfondini uyazivauthini kanye kanye”? Looselytranslated “Do you realise that youare speaking nonsense?”For whose benefit are theyobjecting to the names?What exactly is their objectionabout the names? Who wasElizabeth Donkin and why would awhole city be named after her?Let me be blunt - we do not havetime to nurse the feelings of peoplewho oppose things for the sake of it.We do not have time to satisfy afew who feel they may be living in acity whose name may not representthem (whatever that means).We are in a nation-buildingproject that seeks to transform thisAfrican country to represent itspeople and not be a vestige of ashameful colonial history.Nqaba Bhanga and CharlesNqakula of the ANC regional taskteam must fall in line - we have notime to nurse their bruised egos.Just because 19,000 or 260,000or whatever signed a petition doesn’tmean they have to be listened to atthe expense of everybody else.
