POPS JAZZ WITH JACKIE ALLENIAN PASSMORE, GUEST CONDUCTORWith adventurous musicality and an infectiousstage presence, Ian Passmore leads a rich careeras an orchestra conductor and pedagogue.Hailed as “a rising young conductor” with “apalpable enjoyment of the music’s dramatic ebband flow,” his “powerful” interpretations of thestandard repertoire harken back to a bygonegeneration of conductors.Following two seasons as the OmahaSymphony’s Assistant Conductor, the orchestranamed Ian their Associate Conductor in 2019—a position never before created in its nearly100 year history. He made his Masterworksdebut with the Omaha Symphony in February2020 in a program featuring the works ofBernstein, Bruch, and Brahms. Ian maintainsan active guest conducting schedule; previousengagements include the Buffalo PhilharmonicOrchestra, and a residency at the VietnamNational Academy of Music in Hanoi. While inVietnam, Ian led masterclasses for conservatorymusicians and conducted a performance withthe Hanoi Philharmonic. This program includedthe premiere of Vinh Cat’s “An everlastingmoment at the change of the millennium” intandem with performances of Ives and Dvorak.In the 2015-16 season, Ian was honored as theSchmidt Conducting Fellow by the IndianapolisSymphony Orchestra, for whom he served as acover conductor and worked with their annualhigh school “Side-By-Side” program.Having begun his own conducting studiesat a very early age, Ian’s career prioritizesconducting pedagogy and music education. Inthat vein, his educational contributions includefrequent appearances as guest conductorand adjudicator for student ensembles, aswell as numerous live and virtual speakingengagements. Ian was also a presenter for the2019 Nebraska Music Educators Associationannual conference, leading a masterclass onrehearsal and conducting techniques. Priorto his appointment in Omaha, Ian served asAssociate Instructor of Orchestral Conductingat the Indiana University Jacobs School ofMusic, where he taught conducting and ledthe IU All-Campus Orchestra. His privateconducting students have been accepted toconservatories and summer music programssuch as Indiana University, the Conservatoirede musique de Lyon, and the Aspen MusicFestival & School.Ian holds degrees from Indiana University, theUniversity of Delaware, and the University ofNorth Carolina at Greensboro, with additionalstudies at UNC Chapel Hill. He is gratefulto his principal conducting mentors, whoinclude David Effron, Arthur Fagen, JamesAllen Anderson, Tonu Kalam, and the lateRobert Gutter. Ian is a member of the Leagueof American Orchestras, the InternationalConductors Guild Board of Directors, and thehonors music society Pi Kappa Lambda.Ian is now based in North Carolina with hisfiancée Dianna Fiore and their two dachshunds,Beethoven and Charlie. When not on thepodium, Ian can be found enjoying localrestaurants and craft beer, cooking, traveling,road biking, and CrossFit.
