• Recurrent perianal abscesses may be the first

presentation of diabetes. Ask about thirst and

urinary frequency.

• Recurrent perianal problems, especially fissures in

unusual places, may be a presentation of Crohn’s

disease.

• Do not treat perianal abscesses with antibiotics.

Perianal abscesses should be incised and drained.

Failure to do so may result in development of a

fistula-in-ano.
