Fishing
Fishing in Queensland waters offers the recreational
angler a variety of fishing unequalled
anywhere in Australia.
Whether you throw a line in off the rocks,
fish the rich waters off Magnetic Island, or take
a trip out to the
Great Barrier Reef,

fish for sport and
also excellent
eating fish.
From the
beaches, rocky
points and inshore
waters you will
catch species
such as bream,
flathead, whiting,
queen fish, mackerel
and trevally to
name a few. Fresh
bait is best, try
prawns, pilchards,
squid or herrings.
Fishing tackle and bait can be purchased
on the Island. There are boat ramps in Picnic,
Nelly and Horseshoe Bays.
Some of the best fishing spots are Middle
Reef, West Point, Orchard Rocks, Horseshoe
Bay, the harbour breakwater in Nelly Bay and
in Picnic Bay, the jetty and rocks near the surf
club.
Local fishing trips can be booked for a few
hours or more, with a professional fishing
guide who knows the “right spots”, so good
results are assured.
Booking agents on the Island are only too
happy to arrange a fishing trip for you, locally,
or out to the Great Barrier Reef where coral
trout, sweet lip, red emperor, gold spot cod
and many other varieties of reef fish await.
For “what’s on the bite” and the best spots
ask your friendly fishing tackle shop.
PLEASE NOTE: Fishing is NOT allowed
in Geoffrey, Alma, Florence, Gowrie,
Radical and Balding Bays or the Five
Beach Bay area. These are Marine National
Park Green Zones and fines apply. For more
