Primary SchoolPreparing, Sowing, GrowingLight at the end of the tunnel….“It feels a little bit like Christmas Eve…” was how one family described the return to school on 8 th March –children excited and full of anticipation and parents also relieved that the run up to the day (and all the hardwork and juggling of home schooling) was over. As staff, we had been preparing and talking to the childrenin our daily live lessons (KS2) or weekly Zooms (KS1) and could not wait to have them properly back.Learning is an inherently social activity and it is not good to be alone! Whilst technology has certainly helpedthe isolation, it is still hard to collaborate realistically from behind a screen. As children have returned toschool we have planned the first few weeks to be full of activities which develop their ‘social muscles’ again –learning to speak and listen, take turns, share ideas, build on other’s ideas, disagree without falling out. Aswe’ve talked about what children need, we’ve felt aware that it’s probably not just the children either!Lockdown has narrowed all of our social experiences and we will all take a while to ‘reset’.As well as focusing on social development, we have planned plenty ofphysical activities, as it was harder to keep fit in this last lockdownwith the colder weather and darker nights. We have lovely schoolgrounds and are making the most of being in them. For the rest of thisterm, children are coming in tracksuits and trainers to help them feelcomfortable, be active and because we know how difficult it might beto source school shoes that fit when shops are still shut! We will alsobe carefully monitoring the ‘emotional temperature’ of school. It is abig adjustment after an extended time at home to suddenly be back inschool with larger groups, more noise and fewer adults than at home.All of our worlds have shrunk during this last lockdown, and we will bemaking sure that children are aware that they are cared for andlooked after, and that adults are always available to listen.It is good that as a nation we are asking questions of our educationsystem - is it fit for purpose in a ‘post-Covid’ world? We should belooking again at our values, curriculum content, the structure of theschool year, the length of the school day. Our children don’t just needshort term ‘catch-up’, they deserve carefully considered, planned and costed change which will preparethem for all the challenges and joys of being a citizen of such a fast changing world. So as this conversationdevelops over the coming weeks and months, please do join in. As a Headteacher I am expected to have anopinion on these things, but to be truly effective the change will need to take into account the voices ofchildren, parents, grandparents, educational research, workplaces, the opportunities of technology and ourdearly held values.
