FILING A COMPLAINT at the DIVISION<br />
If you believe that you have discrim<strong>in</strong>ated aga<strong>in</strong>st<br />
by a hous<strong>in</strong>g provider with regard to your lawful<br />
source <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>come, you can file a compla<strong>in</strong>t with the<br />
New York State Division <strong>of</strong> Human Rights. A<br />
compla<strong>in</strong>t must be filed with the Division with<strong>in</strong><br />
one year <strong>of</strong> the alleged discrim<strong>in</strong>atory act. To file a<br />
compla<strong>in</strong>t:<br />
• Visit the Division’s website, at dhr.ny.gov, and<br />
download a compla<strong>in</strong>t form. Completed<br />
compla<strong>in</strong>ts should be signed before a notary<br />
public, and returned to the Division, by email,<br />
fax, mail or <strong>in</strong> person.<br />
• Contact one <strong>of</strong> the Division’s <strong>of</strong>fices, by<br />
telephone or by mail, to obta<strong>in</strong> a compla<strong>in</strong>t<br />
form and/or other assistance <strong>in</strong> fil<strong>in</strong>g a<br />
compla<strong>in</strong>t.<br />

Your compla<strong>in</strong>t will be <strong>in</strong>vestigated by the Division,<br />
and if the Division f<strong>in</strong>ds probable cause to believe<br />
discrim<strong>in</strong>ation has occurred, your case will be sent<br />
to a public hear<strong>in</strong>g, or the case may proceed <strong>in</strong><br />
state court. There is no fee charged to you for<br />
these services.<br />
If the Commissioner <strong>of</strong> Human Rights f<strong>in</strong>ds <strong>in</strong> your<br />
favor follow<strong>in</strong>g the hear<strong>in</strong>g, the relief awarded to<br />
you may <strong>in</strong>clude such remedies as a cease-anddesist<br />
order, provision <strong>of</strong> hous<strong>in</strong>g that was denied,<br />
and monetary compensation for the harm you<br />
suffered.
