Creator Connection
APRIL 2021
Welcoming all to Worship, Grow, and Serve in God’s Grace.
Pastor’s Corner
A message from Pastor Amanda
Grace and Peace to you from God our Father and our Lord and
Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.
The nature of a promise
is that it is something we hold
and trust, but it not necessarily
something that we experience
on a daily basis.
There is the Ole and Lena
joke from my Scandinavian
roots in which Lena laments
that Ole has only told her that
he loves her one time. When
asked, Ole responds that he
will let her know if he changes
his mind. Obviously Ole was
not versed in Love Languages
and is missing the need that
Lena had to hear affirmations
of that love. The promise of
consistency and enduring love
is hinted at but also the human
reality of impermanence is
poignantly implied. Minds can
be changed, promises do get
broken in our hands and under
our power.
A promise needs to be used.
We need reassurance that
promises are remembered by all
parties involved and are being
acted upon as well so that they
are not empty.
Do you know people who
make promises right and left
but quickly forget or when a
response is needed come up
with excuses rather than follow
through on their promise? Are
you one of those people? I
imagine sometimes the answer
is yes to both questions.
As humans, we are promise
makers. We are not always
promise keepers. As a result,
we project our unfaithfulness
onto God and God’s promise of
keeping fidelity. In doing so we
are as far from the truth as the
east is from the west.
God made promises to
you in your Baptism — you
have shared in a death like his
and will certainly share in a
resurrection like his (Romans
6:5). We call our death in
Baptism the big death in which
the powers of sin, the devil and
death are defeated by Christ in
our life. Our physical death at
some point later in our future
is our little death and while
significant to us it has already
been demoted from the last
and greatest word in our life by
Christ.
Terri’s Two Cents
As I write this article, March
21, we celebrate International
Day for the Elimination of Racial
Discrimination. Some topics
are hard to talk about because
we don’t want to hurt anyone’s
feelings, and some people think
that talking about prejudice,
bias, and stereotypes is impolite
or hurtful. But studies have
shown that discussing these
difficult topics (even when we
fall short of perfection) can help
to overcome harmful attitudes.
Let’s start by getting to know
some new (or familiar) words.
Do you know what prejudice
means? Prejudice means to
pre-judge. A prejudice is a
judgment someone makes
about another person just
based on their appearance or
differences. Prejudgments can
oftentimes be negative, hurtful,
and untrue. When I was in
fourth grade, the other kids in
my class thought that since I
was smaller than the average
girl, I could not be good at
sports. I was actually a very
fast runner and won the prize
for “Best Athlete” at Field Day
that year.
When an entire group of
people is prejudged, it is called
stereotyping. An example of
stereotyping could be found in
this statement: “Girls love the
color pink.” Some girls do love
the color pink, but how would
you feel if you were a girl who
“If we hate others, we are living and walking in the dark.
We don’t know where we are going, because we can’t see
in the dark.” --1 John 2: 11
did NOT like the color pink?
I think most of us struggle
with prejudice and stereotyping
to some degree. Our
experiences with one member
of a group may influence
how we think and act toward
all members of that group.
Sometimes, prejudice and
stereotyping are based on
a person’s ethnicity. That is
another big word we should
define. Ethnicity is your race or
background. It can mean what
part of the world your ancestors
are from or what language you
ancestors spoke.
Prejudging people can be
harmful to the person who is
being judged and to the one
who is doing the judging. If we
judge people only by what we
see on the outside, we cannot
get to know the real person.
We could be missing out on a
chance to have a really great
friend.
This is the beginning of a
very long conversation. There
is a lot to discuss. Let’s talk
more!
“If we hate others, we are living
and walking in the dark. We
don’t know where we are going,
because we can’t see in the
dark.” --1 John 2: 11
Ministry
Continued from pg. 1
I would add that we have
little deaths throughout of lives
— as chapters of our lives begin
and end, as we experience
grief and loss and limitations
and as life continually brings
suffering to us and through us.
In this Easter season I want
us to also realize that while we
experience little deaths, we also
experience little resurrections.
God continues to bring us life
out of death or maybe better
said in the midst of death. Hope
in the midst of sorrow. Joy in
the midst of suffering. These
little resurrections remind us
of God’s promise to provide
and sustain our life and that we
will share in the resurrection.
The Big Resurrection will
come when death, the devil
and sin are defeated one last
time in your flesh, and they
will no longer have any hold
or influence over you. You
will have no more death, only
resurrection.
So a question for you…
when has God used this
promise for you. When
have you been given little
resurrections, glimpses of the
fullness of God’s promise for
you?
Just because you have not
felt or experienced resurrection,
or that death and suffering
keep on returning to your
life perhaps, does not make
resurrection any less real.
God does not require that you
get it or feel it to be real — I
know you would like it to be
otherwise but many times you
will not feel God at work in your
life. It does help to name the
little resurrections in your life
and to name them for others
in their lives as well— how is
God acting in the little deaths
along the way in our life? The
resurrection is a promise that
abides, dwells in you. It is a
promise that will be dawn in
your life and the lives of your
loved ones.
We do need to be reminded.
We do need to be given God’s
promise again and again, not
because it did not work the first
time, but because we, like Lena,
need reassurance to hold onto
and to trust.
Fear not for those baptized
— God will remain true to His
promise. God will not change
His mind even when we do. The
resurrection will come — there
will be little resurrections along
the way of life — and the big
resurrection when you will finally
see what has held you in hope
and promise throughout life’s
little deaths and resurrections.
Peace be with you in the
name of your Risen Lord and
Savior!
In Christ,
CHICAGO (March 17,
2021) — The Rev. Elizabeth A.
Eaton, presiding bishop of the
Evangelical Lutheran Church in
America (ELCA), and leaders of
the Evangelical Lutheran Church
in Canada, the Anglican Church
of Canada and The Episcopal
Church have issued a statement
in observance of the International
Day for the Elimination of Racial
Discrimination on March 21.
The statement follows:
Statement for the International
Day for the Elimination of Racial
Discrimination – March 21, 2021
From Churches Beyond
Borders: Evangelical Lutheran
Church in Canada, Anglican
Church of Canada, The
Episcopal Church and the
Evangelical Lutheran Church in
America
In Advent 2020, Churches
Beyond Borders expressed
a commitment to dismantling
racism, combating white
supremacy and actively seeking
opportunities to engage more
deeply on these important issues.
In this season of Lent, we continue
our journey as we join together
in observing the International
Day for the Elimination of
Racial Discrimination. This is an
annual day of recommitment in
remembrance of the day police in
Sharpeville, South Africa, opened
fire and killed 69 people at a
peaceful demonstration against
apartheid “pass laws” in 1960.
end-racism-day) Recognizing
that the March 21 International
Day for the Elimination of Racial
Discrimination is a calling to be
lived out every day, we offer this
reflection as encouragement
to continue the journey with
renewed determination.
I have observed the misery
of my people who are in Egypt; I
have heard their cry on account
of their taskmasters. Indeed, I
know their sufferings, and I have
come down to deliver them
(Exodus 3:7-8a, NRSV)
How do we lament the sin of
racism?
Racism and xenophobia
have a painful, violent, deadly
history that traverses all borders.
The institutional church shares
in the complicity of the legacies
of the Doctrine of Discovery
colonization, forced removal and
genocide of Indigenous people,
the enslavement of African
and Indigenous Peoples and
injustices perpetrated against
all people of color. The sin of
racism is structural, institutional,
interpersonal and internalized. It
lives in communities inside and
outside the church; it continues
to inflict harm on a daily basis
and generate new history. How
do we repent of all of this?
At the burning bush, Moses
hears God say, “I have heard
the cries of my people.” We
who follow the God of Freedom
must also hear the cries of
God’s people, of each other, and
especially those among us who
live under the constant threat
and violence of racism and white
supremacy. For those of us who
have the privilege of closing
ourselves off, we need to open
ourselves to feel the painful
truths of the sins of racism and
Ministry
Statement for the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination
white supremacy in our hearts
and bodies and minds and
souls. We must create spaces
and structures that welcome and
include the voices of those most
directly impacted by the sins of
racism. This message is being
shared during the season of Lent,
a period of self-examination,
reflection, and making amends.
We need to lament, repent and
be transformed.
Moses is told to take off his
sandals. We need to lament in
worship: to remove our shoes,
to stand in humility, to feel
the ashes on our foreheads,
to be honest in the presence
of God about our sins and
shortcomings. Holy Ground is
a gift that supports lamentation,
repentance, transformation and
discernment.
Moses is sent to work for the
freedom of people. Oppression is
not inevitable or insurmountable.
Things can change. Challenging
racism and white supremacy
calls each of us to deep
and honest consideration of
perceptions, biases, behaviours
and systemic patterns. We echo
the United Nations call to take
the strongest possible stand
against racism, discrimination
and intolerance of every kind, to
spread the word to fight racism
and to take stock of the state of
human rights and hate speech
today and reflect on how each
of us can stand up for rights.
In lamentation and repentance,
we hear God’s call to act for the
dismantling of racism.
Moses admits his own fears
Fellowship
Over many months, Creator Lutheran Church
has remained faithful in giving to others, even in
these times of hardship and change during the
pandemic. Your generosity has made it possible
to give to others who needed support during the
past two months in the following ways:
• Feeding those who have a scarcity of
food by giving to our local food banks:
$1800
• Helping agencies that help the homeless,
and those who can’t pay rent by giving to
Open Hearth, Associated Ministries and
Mi Casa: $1400
• Lutheran Disaster Relief for families in
Texas: $300
• Agencies serving families in need-White
River Community Outreach: $500.
Church
In Society
“In all things, we are more than
conquers through Him who loved us.
For I am sure that neither death nor
life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things
present or things to come, nor powers,
nor height or depth, nor anything else
in all creation with be able to separate
us from the love of God in Christ our
Lord.” Romans 8:37-39
We look forward to your continued support
and your trust in giving to those who deserve
your gifts.
Look forward to new activities coming up in
the next months. Sack lunches will be delivered
to Peace Lutheran Church on Friday, April 23.
A team of volunteers will make and deliver
the meals. Plans are being made for Creator
to support the Pierce County Emergency
Food Network Hunger Walk for its Virtual
Walk throughout the month of May. Coming
soon is news on how you can donate to this
worthy cause. EFN supplies food for 70 food
pantries throughout Pierce County. Before the
Pandemic, 1 in 9 people in Pierce County were
food insecure. Now it is projected the figure is
closer to 1 in 6.
Your continued support enables our church
to spread consistent love to our neighbors and
beyond.
Church Council Highlights
The following are highlights from the Creator Church Council meeting held Tuesday
December 15th 2020. These are not the official minutes of the meeting, but a brief summary
to aid communication. Approved Minutes will be posted on the bulletin board across from the
Creator has a high balance right now, despite a very
slow February. Council is working to understand if the low
giving was a fluke or a trend. If it is an anomaly, we will
be increasing our Synodical and Local Giving to support a
community that continues to be impacted by the pandemic.
Pastors Report
We had some very positive feedback on the music for
the past few weeks!
Holy Week is coming up. Pastor Amanda will be doing
services Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter
Sunday. Including a “Sunrise” service at Driftwood Point at
7:00am followed by a service in the sanctuary at 9:30am.
After Easter, she will be taking a well-deserved break. To
cover her for April 11, we will have a Pulpit Supply pastor.
We had an offer from the Mountainview nurse who had
some extra vaccine and she was able to get six people
their first dose!
We are a growing congregation! We have three new
families joining our family as well as some people who are
showing an interest in Creator as their new church home.
Capital Projects
Great news on the roof repair being complete. The
former tree hole has been filled and the roof has been
mended. There is some other, unrelated, roof damage
that is being addressed. The church sign has also been
completely fixed.
Thoughts on
For many, Stewardship can
have a negative connotation. It
may conjure up a reaction of
pressure or obligation, resulting
in a response of avoidance or
guilt if one presumes it is all
about expecting the donation
of more money. What if we
thought of Stewardship as a
privilege, or an opportunity to
show our gratitude for God's
provision and how we have
been blessed? Some may say,
"that sounds great but I've just
got too much month at the end
of the money. I simply have too
many bills." When we focus
on what we don't have, our
response to Stewardship can
end up being filled with anxiety
and stress.
A verse from a song by the
Christian group Casting Crowns
says, "the same power that rose
Jesus from the grave lives in
us." Could our thoughts and
fears impose limitations on our
faith in respect to Stewardship?
Would things change if we
focused instead on our faith
in God and the Holy Spirit
guiding our giving? What if
we considered Stewardship
to be an act of worship, as
Pastor Amanda announces at
the offering during the worship
service?
Pastor Amanda has also
been discussing what it
means to be a church during
the pandemic, and even now
during Lent. When we have
focused on what we can do as a
church in the community during
Covid, the impact to several
resources has been significant.
Creator has maintained a strong
presence with generous giving.
Though giving to Creator has
been down during Covid, the
Church Council elected to
continue tithing in faith to those
community resources we've
given to in previous months.
What we can do together with
God's provision, as we trust
in Him and share with our
neighbors, even blesses us in
return.
8
Preschool News
April 2021
Finally, spring is here! We ended the month of March with the
arrival of spring and now welcome April with hopes of more sunshine
and less rain! Let’s hope we get the sunshine part for our field trip to
Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium on April 22nd and 23rd. We will
meet at the zoo at the time on our tickets. By now, you should have
received an information letter about the field trip. If not, please see
your teachers.
There will be no school from April 5-9 due to Spring Break. We
will resume classes on Monday, April 9.
We will celebrate the miracle of Easter in April and the new life
that spring brings. We will also continue our study of habitats. In
preparing for our Zoo and Aquarium field trip, we will also be learning
about undersea creatures and the undersea habitat. The letters for
the month of April are Y,y, K,k, and Q,q. Our color is purple, and our
shape is oval. The younger classes will study the number 8 and the
older classes will study the numbers 17 and 18.
As the end of the school year approaches, we thought it would
be helpful to know of some important dates in advance. Therefore,
please mark the following dates on your calendars:
*May 6 and 7: Mother’s Day Tea (last 45 minutes of class)
-*pending approval
May
has been such a blessing to have your children with us this year.
Creator COVID Update April 2021
Easter Sunrise Service
at Driftwood Point Park
Altar Guild is pleased to support
the Women's Group in offering
an outdoor sunrise service on
Easter morning beginning at
7AM. Please bring your own
lawn chair and umbrella if
needed. Communion will be
offered in sealed cups as we do
at church. Mask up and come
ready to sing!
Peace to you!
Linda Reed
Hello church family! Creator
Lutheran has a favor to ask
of you. Because of COVID
safety regulations, we haven’t
seen many of you since the
pandemic started, though we
have been able to keep in touch
electronically. However, some
of our members have fallen off
our radar completely and even
more of our church family has
changed contact information
without letting us know.
Because of COVID, much
of the contact information for
our members in our database is
inaccurate or out of date. This
14
As we enter into Phase 3 here in Washington, we want to update
you on our COVID protocols.
• Masks are required while in
the building.
• Temperature checks will
continue as well as signing
into the building.
• Six feet of distance still needs
to be maintained between
COVID groups.
• This is our limiting factor in the
number of people who can
attend worship or events at
church. We have rearranged
seating to allow for more
groups in the sanctuary and
currently have 81 seats set
up with additional seating that
can be set up in the narthex
if needed.
• Please register for worship,
this helps us anticipate who
is coming and keep track of
whether or not the service
is at a safe number of
occupants.
• The building is open to
other activities in addition to
worship and confirmation as
of April 5th.
• If you are interested in using
the building for a church
activity or are part of an
outside group that would like
to request use, please contact
the office for a Building Use
Request Form. All COVID
protocols will need to be kept
by those using the building
and only one group will be
allowed per evening.
• No food or drink (with the
exception of Communion)
will be allowed at this time.
• Our nursery will be opening
again in April to two families
a week with prior registration.
Creator 2021 Census Request
means we can’t contact some
members. We can’t visit them,
we can’t talk to them, we can’t
reach out when they need it most.
To address this issue, Creator
is going to experiment with a
church census questionnaire.
As an organization, Creator
needs to know how many people
are active in the church, we need
an accurate count of members,
visitors, associate members,
etc. We need to have accurate
contact information for members,
we need to know if families have
grown or, sadly, gotten smaller.
Losing track of members poses
many problems with Creator
as an organization. On a more
personal level, of course we
worry when we haven’t heard
from a church member in over a
year!
This month (April) we are
going to send out our first attempt
at this census questionnaire. It
will ask for information we need
in order to keep an accurate and
healthy database of members.
We ask that you bear with us
as we collect this information.
Thank you for your time and you
can look forward to receiving our
census questionnaire soon!
