SINGLE RESIDENTIALBEACHYHEADPlettenberg Bay South AfricaHovering over the dune and a stone throwfrom Robberg Beach in Plettenberg Bay, thedesign was conceived as a simple box whichcaptures and frames the ocean view.The outer shell of the box is finished in arough natural texture that references back tothe dune, contrasting with the smooth revealand soffit that tapers to create a delicateframe. From the road, the scale of the houseis modest, with living spaces concealed on alower level.Strong horizontality is articulated in theentrance canopy, which is planted withindigenous shrubs cascading over the slabedge. Taking advantage of the remarkableviews - with Robberg peninsula to the southeastand the Outeniqua Mountains in thedistance towards the north - the southernsection of the house is higher and appearsto be sliced off from the northern part ina sculptural way. This opening extendsvertically through the building, washingnorthern light into the deeper spaces of thehouse. Lit from a skylight above, the stairsare delicately suspended in this void, alsoallowing views through it.The geometry of the staircase continues asa diagonal line that extends the cantileveringentertainment terrace. The centrallypositionedkitchen serves the living spacesand northern courtyard. The kitchen volumeopens upwards to the bedroom gallery,allowing northern light into the space.
