A GREENER WORLD2020 IN REVIEWI am not going to sugar coat it: it has beenan extremely hard year on many levels. Whethermourning the loss of loved ones, wrestling withhealth challenges, struggling economically, orbalancing new demands in a world turned upsidedown, we’ve all been impacted. Yet even as the arrivalof 2021 signals a new beginning, it is worth reflectingon what we’ve learned from a year like no other.As COVID-19 shut down businesses, social supportnetworks and every aspect of our ‘normal lives’,A Greener World reacted very quickly—but not withoutchallenges. Our first objective was to take careof the team, making sure everyone had a workablesetup to manage (who are we kidding here: toattempt to manage) their work and home life.Our programmatic priority was our farmers andranchers. Many were in the same boat, and wefound new common ground as we sought to assist.We identified challenges and worked to resolvethem through programs like our Help Farmers FeedHungry Families Fundraiser, our COVID readinessresources and our policy advocacy for independentfarms to receive the same aid and opportunities asother small businesses. We adapted procedures toensure we could continue offering our programs andservices to farmers and consumers with the samelevel of quality and expertise they expect. We dideverything in our power to make it easier for farmbusinesses to survive.It is far too soon to declare ourselves out of thewoods, but the path forward is becoming clearer.If there was one positive from the pandemic, it isthat many people are more aware of the connectionsbetween their food, their health and the natural world.People don’t want to return to ‘business as usual.’Now is the time to rebuild a better food systemand we are ready.Emily MooseExecutive Director, A Greener World2020 IN REVIEW • 3
