NOMINEES
DARCY DESCHAMBAULT
DRUMMER OF THE YEAR NOMINEE
Darcy began drumming at the age of 12 and starting
regularly performing at the age of 14. He gained a
majority of his early knowledge of music immersed
in concert band, concert choir, jazz band, jazz choir
and a 3pc rock band, while living in Esterhazy, Sk.
With a love of most all music including blues,
rock, metal, classical, country, pop and punk,
he continued performing in various bands over
the years and did some garage style eight track
recording and studio recording on three albums. He
had a short stint of success in an original project
called Full Tilt, winning a band wars and playing
larger stages. In 2015 he began performing in the
Saskatchewan country scene and has recieved 5
nominations and 2 awards for Drummer of the year.
SAM DERBAWKA
FIDDLE PLAYER OF THE YEAR NOMINEE
Sam Derbawka began performing at the age
of 8 playing fiddle at local competitions in his
home town of Borden Saskatchewan, he co
founded Redberry Grass and performed with
his brother and sister until the age of 17 when
the three members decided to go separate
ways. Balancing weekend performances and a
weekday job, Sam toured with several artists
over the years such as Aces Wyld, Amy Nelson
and Hayley Jensen. Once he topped out in
the powerline trade, he began touring and
performing full time with The Dirt Rich band.
He’s also been performing with Lane Shields,
Will Ballantyne, Jake and the Sturgeon River
Boys and Greg Kozak. Playing music full time
has allowed him to be able to tour Canada
and experience his first international tour in
Australia. In 2019 and 2020 Sam was awarded
SCMA specialty instrumentalist of the year.
SHAWN BLACKMAN
GUITAR PLAYER OF THE YEAR NOMINEE
Guitarist for the Heard, Shawn has established
a reputation as a versatile, strong and song
oriented supporting musician across genres
having performed with multi-award winning
artists including, Jully Black, Kenny Shields,
Jess Moskaluke, Aaron Goodvin, Codie Prevost,
Kelsey Fitch, Donny Parenteau and Jessica
Robinson. Shawn has performed across
Canada at such venues as the Roger’s Centre
in Toronto, Tom Jackson’s Huron Carole, the
Ness Creek Music Festival, Big Valley Jamboree,
Saskatchewan County Music Awards, Canadian
Country Music Awards Songwriters’ Circles, The
JUNO Gala Dinner, Canadian Aboriginal Music
Awards, and Indigenous Music Awards and
has performed live numerous times on CTV’s
Canada AM and CBC’s News: Sunday.
EVAN FRIESEN
FIDDLE PLAYER OF THE YEAR NOMINEE
Evan is a musician and teacher from Saskatoon,
SK. His family supported his passion for music
from a young age, which led him to get an Honours
Music Degree in Violin from the University of
Saskatchewan. During his time in University, he
secured a seat in the violin section of the Saskatoon
Symphony Orchestra and played with the ensemble
for 7 years. Along with his academic pursuits, Evan
has been playing in bands for his whole life. His
diverse music tastes are reflected in the colourful
history of bands he has played with, ranging
from Heavy Metal to Traditional Irish music. Most
recently, he has been brought on as the fiddle,
mandolin, keyboard and acoustic guitar player in
the live band for Country recording artists Brock
Andrews and Brody Seibert.
SCOTT PATRICK
GUITAR PLAYER OF THE YEAR NOMINEE
Scott Patrick was the lead vocalist and
guitarist for the multi award winning band
Wyatt. Wyatt performed on stages across
Canada and had radio success on Canadian
Country Radio. Since the band has stopped
performing, Scott has performed with many
SCMA artists including Heidi Munro, Topher
Mils, Aaron Rigden, and Amanda Hagel.
Currently Scott is working on new music in
the duo Munro & Patrick.
TERRY HOKNES
KEYBOARD PLAYER OF THE YEAR NOMINEE
Terry Hoknes has been nominated at the SCMA
20 times since 1994 in various music instrument
categories as a multi-instrumentalist playing 10
instruments.
Terry is most famously known as the piano
player and lead singer of Dueling Pianos show
which tours around Saskatchewan all year
around. Terry is the host of the SCMA TV Show
series currently running online
