CATALOG ART STAYS 2020 - NO MORE SILENCE
18th edition of the festival was titled NO MORE SILENCE and was a continuation of previous editions, entitled Future, Fragile, and NaturAL(L). NO MORE SILENCE is was not only the motto of the Festival ART STAYS, but also a warning, as it offers a critical, albeit occasionally dramatically ironic approach to the times we live in. A research that began some time ago from the premise that fragility of the world needs to be addressed with utmost urgency in order to rethink our future, has now made an unexpected turn into a phase consisting mostly of “silence”, redefining itself in the time of COVID-19; it maintains a vision to sound, music, words, emptiness, internal and external conflicts, as well as to man’s continuous desire to give voice to space, time, communication, and relationships.

KLOPOTEC ORKESTRA
Hans Beckers (BE)
Hans Beckers, ki s svojimi intrigantnimi
zvočnimi instalacijami navdušuje občinstvo, je
Ptuj prvič obiskal leta 2015, ko je prejel
nagrado Art Stays na Arte Laguna Prize in
pričel s projektom klopotcev; sledila je
rezidenca v očarljivem Kråkeslottetu na
Norveškem, kjer je iz starega lesa zgradil
k l o p o t c e – r o p o t a j o č e v e t r n i c e i z
severovzhodne Slovenije – vsakega s svojim
lastnim značajem. Že od 16. stoletja in vse do
danes se klopotci uporabljajo v vinogradih,
da odganjajo kače in ptiče ter pomagajo
grozdju zoreti. Hans jih je zdaj spremenil v
vznemirljivo zvočno instalacijo.
V svojih performansih in instalacijah skuša
najti ravnovesje med glasbo / zvočno
umetnostjo in vizualno umetnostjo. Večino
njegovih zvočnih instalacij je bilo mogoče
razumeti kot samostojne instrumente,
večinoma narejene z vsemi vrstami “najdenih
predmetov”. Kaže nam, kako predmeti, za
katere na splošno ni mogoče, da bi predvajali
glasbo, dejansko lahko postanejo glasbila.
Hans Beckers, who amazes audience with
his intriguing sound installations, visited Ptuj
for the first time in 2015, after he had won an
Art Stays residency at the Arte Laguna Prize
and started with the klopotec project. He then
visited bewitching Kråkeslottet in Norway,
where he was building “klopotecs” – wind
rattles from North-Eastern Slovenia – from old
wood, each with its own unique character.
Since the 16th century, klopotec is being used
in vineyards to scare away snakes and birds
and help the grapes to ripen. Hans has now
converted them into an exciting sound
installation.
In his work sound is a very crucial and constant
element. In his performances and installations
he tries to find a balance between
music/sound art and visual arts. Most of his
sound installations could be seen as self-made
instruments, mostly made with all kinds of
‘objets trouvees’. He shows how objects that
are not generally considered fit to play music
on can in fact become musical instruments.
