Indoor rowing is the ideal exercise for 

anyone looking to improve their overall 

health and fitness. In contrast to other 

cardiovascular equipment, rowing is a 

total body workout. Each stroke uses 

every large muscle group in the body 

(84% of total muscle mass), to burn 

calories and build strength. 

Indoor rowing is suitable for all ages 

and fitness levels. The beauty of indoor 

rowing is that it is a low impact exercise 

that can be done at any effort level. 

Resistance is created by how hard the 

user rows, giving them total control over 

the intensity of their workout. As rowing 

is not a weight-bearing exercise minimal 

strain is placed on joints or the lower 

back. 

At maximum intensity, indoor rowing 

can burn more than 1000 calories per 

hour. Thus, making rowing especially 

effective for anyone that is short on time. 

The calorie expenditure for 30 minutes 

of rowing is often double that of the 

equivalent bike or treadmill workout.

Appalachian oak, the “Performance Erg” 

features built-in SmartRow technology 

in place of the S4 Performance Monitor

Additionally, the Performance Erg comes 

with XL-rails, a heart-shaped commercial 

footboard, a wider easy-grip handle, 

and an integrated folding phone/tablet

SmartRow is an intelligent power meter 

that provides a highly precise measure 

of WaterRower performance. The 

electronics inside SmartRow measures 

absolute force and stroke length to

Batteries 

Suitable for users of any fitness level, 

the A1 Series rowing machine was 

originally designed for indoor rowing 

group exercise classes. Lightweight and 

portable, when not in use the A1 rower 

can be placed on end for space-saving 

storage. To track performance, the A1 is 

fitted with the A1 Quick-Start Monitor to 

view key workout data while rowing. 

There are two primary differences 

between the A1 and other WaterRower 

models. Firstly, the A1 Quick-Start 

Monitor is an LCD display giving key 

rowing metrics but is less in-depth 

then the S4 Performance Monitor and 

SmartRow. Secondly, the A1 seat travels 

on an aluminium mono-rail which is 

marginally louder than the silent seat 

action of the dual-rail seat system on 

other WaterRowers.

Iconic 

Design 

Inspiration for the 

design came from the 

sparse elegance of 

Shaker furniture. 

The WaterRower was invented in 

1988 by John Duke, a Yale University 

engineer, and USA Rowing National Team 

candidate. Mr Duke had two principles 

leading his design: 

• Firstly, to replicate the experience of 

rowing in a boat, aiming to bring the 

sound, resistance, and physiological 

benefits of rowing to a wider audience. 

• Second, to create a piece of “Fitness 

Furniture” with an aesthetic that would 

complement a residential setting. 

Duke’s goal was to create a rowing 

machine with which the user has a 

welcoming emotional connection, as 

they would with a favoured piece of 

art or furniture. Central to this was 

manufacturing from wood. 

Inspiration for the design came from 

the sparse elegance of Shaker furniture, 

renowned for being beautiful, well-made 

objects that could be used in everyday 

life. The WaterRower, as with Shaker 

furniture, does not have any superfluous 

design elements. Every component of the 

WaterRower has a precise role to play in 

the rowing machines function. 

With his design finalised, Mr Duke 

set up the WaterRower factory in the 

New England state of Rhode Island. A 

hub for skilled manufacturing labour 

and just a few hours north of the 

Appalachian Mountain Range from 

which the WaterRower wood is sourced, 

Rhode Island remains the home of our 

manufacturing operation to this day.

Designed for use on iOS and Android 

tablets, WaterRower Regatta allows 

WaterRower users from all over the world to 

race each other over a range of distances. 

Ideal for anyone motivated by competition, 

WaterRower Regatta users can join public 

races or challenge friends to a private 

match. Workout information is stored on 

the WaterRower NOHrD account platform 

for future reference and comparison. 

Compatible with S4 Performance Monitor + 

ComModule or a wired connection from the 

S4 monitor to an Android device. 

KINOMAP 

Kinomap provides an immersive rowing 

experience. The app streams videos from 

beautiful lakes, oceans, and rivers around 

the world. Peer to peer video sharing 

ensures a rapidly growing library of content. 

Videos adjust to the rower’s speed and are 

GPS mapped to show where in the world 

a user is rowing. N.B. A subscription fee is 

payable to use Kinomap.

and magnetic rowing machines, a 

WaterRower harnesses the power of 

water to deliver a smooth and even 

resistance. Providing a workout that feels 

and sounds just like rowing in a boat. 

The WaterRower’s unique WaterFlywheel 

uses a design patented paddle that 

moves through water in the same way 

as an oar in a rowing boat. As with on 

the water rowing, resistance on the 

WaterRower adjusts naturally to match 

the user’s intensity. The harder a user 

pulls, the greater the resistance they 

will feel, without the need for artificial 

adjustment or to change the amount of

have been educating landowners 

and the public about sound forestry 

practices and sustainable harvesting 

since its founding in the 1940s. 

Every wooden WaterRower is 

given life on the lush, verdant 

planes of the Appalachian 

Mountains in North America. 

For almost a century, a thriving 

lumber trade has existed in this 

region, prized for producing some 

of the world’s finest, responsibly 

grown, and harvested hardwoods. 

Once milled and kiln-dried, the 

wood that grows here is lauded for 

the remarkable strength, durability, 

and grain characteristics unique 

to the region. To the north, and at 

higher elevations, a dark, humid 

evergreen forest of spruce and fir 

cloaks the mountains. While further 

south, in the lower glades, a more 

open broadleaf mix predominates, 

including the ash, oak, cherry and 

walnut varieties we have used to 

make our products for over 30 

years. 

The special qualities displayed 

by the hardwoods grown in this 

region are due to the Appalachian 

Mountains’ unique ecology. A 

fortuitous mix of nutrient-rich soil, 

ideal year-round temperatures, 

and perfect moisture levels provide 

particularly fertile ground for trees 

to thrive. The idyllic conditions 

allow wood fibres to grow long and 

strong, forming rich colours and 

characterful grain patterns. 

Protecting this hardwood oasis 

while supporting the region’s 

burgeoning lumber trade has always 

been important to WaterRower. 

The Appalachian hardwood 

manufacturers trade association 

(AHMI), of which we ensure all our 

suppliers are members, is one of 

the few such associations with 

a division devoted to forestry, 

the advancement of sound 

forestry practices and wilderness 

In practice, that means for every 

Appalachian tree felled to make our 

products, 2.5 more grow in its place. 

Thanks in part to the modern forest 

management techniques employed 

by our responsible suppliers, a 

billion trees have been added to 

the region since 2007, with 300,000 

acres of Appalachian forest added 

in the past 25 years. That’s nearly 33 

acres a day. To put it another way, 

more wood than it takes to make 

a WaterRower grows back every 

second in the mountains.
