BRAVO! VIRTUAL GALA

SAT. MAY 1, 2021

DIGITAL

PROGRAM

BOOK

Welcome!

This year’s Bravo! Gala, Metamorphosēs, acknowledges the life-altering changes

the past fourteen months have brought to each of us. While change brings

challenge, the Board, staff and musicians of the Hartford Symphony Orchestra,

along with each of you, have used this opportunity to invent creative strategies

to maintain our spirits, our hopes and our dreams. Tonight, we celebrate silver

linings and miracles, small and great, that have helped illuminate the darkness.

The bonds between the HSO and our community that have been forged over the

past 77 seasons are enduring. We are determined to maintain and strengthen that

bond in any way we can, through the only shared space available right now—a

virtual one.

This year, we celebrate one another, and an exceptional milestone—Carolyn

Kuan’s 10th season as Music Director of the Hartford Symphony Orchestra!

Carolyn has relentlessly pursued bold visions, encouraging us to strive for

new artistic heights. With Carolyn at the helm, imparting her natural creativity,

curiosity and innovation to every project she undertakes, the Hartford Symphony

is ready to explore new pathways. Without a doubt, we will emerge miraculously

transformed.

We offer our sincere gratitude to every sponsor of Metamorphosēs and extend

special thanks to our Co-Presenting Sponsors: South Ocean Capital Partners and

Stanley Black & Decker, for their most gracious support of this evening’s event.

We also thank our dedicated and creative Gala Committee, who have worked

tirelessly to push the typical boundaries of a virtual gala to create a one-of-a-kind

experience for all our guests. Led by our incredible Co-Chairs, MaryBeth Reiss

and Gerry Lupacchino, this committee’s dedication and out-of-the-box thinking is

truly unmatched!

Is proud to support the Hartford

Symphony Orchestra

And congratulates Carolyn Kuan

on 10 incredible years

as Music Director

Finally, we want to thank everyone who is joining us this evening. Your belief in

the power of music is integral to the Hartford Symphony Orchestra’s mission: to

enrich lives and community through great music. You are part of a symphony

of supporters, helping us conduct a bright future for the Hartford Symphony

Orchestra.

Enjoy the festivities!

A LETTER FROM

MaryBeth Reiss and Gerry Lupacchino

Co-Chairs of the HSO Bravo!

Gala Committee

EVENING PROGRAM

Good evening, Friends!

Welcome to the Hartford Symphony Orchestra’s Bravo! Virtual Gala – again! When the HSO

pivoted to a virtual fundraiser for the 2020 Bravo! Gala, we were hopeful it would be a onetime

occasion. Out of an abundance of caution, we made the call to go virtual again for 2021,

with the added challenge of making the virtual experience entertaining, participatory, and

something you haven’t seen before!

While we can’t be together in one place this evening, we are excited that the musicians of

the Hartford Symphony Orchestra were able to safely gather and record their first symphony

performance in over a year. Tonight’s program is truly incredible, and we hope you all enjoy

watching as much as we enjoyed putting it together.

It has been a pleasure to serve together as Co-Chairs of such a motivated and inspired

committee, who, through their ingenuity, connections, and dedication, have helped make this

evening a success.

This virtual Gala also would not have been possible without the support and participation

of our many corporate and individual sponsors. Incredibly, we are thrilled to announce that

we exceeded our sponsorship goal for the event! This success is such a testament to the

community that surrounds the HSO. The proceeds raised from this important event help pave

the road back, allowing the HSO to support our musicians and serve all in our community.

Thank you to all of our sponsors, table hosts, ticket buyers, Fund the Transformation

contributors, and everyone else tuning in this evening in support of the Hartford Symphony

Orchestra! We also owe a special thank you to each of our local vendors and partners, listed

on page 13 of this program book. As a thank you to the community who generously supports

the HSO, it was important to the staff and Gala committee that we chose to partner with

local businesses for everything from the surprise butterfly origami kits in your meal boxes

(thank you, Hartford Prints!) to the cocktail kits sent to our out-of-town supporters, curated

by Hartford Flavor Company—plus so much more. Our community is resilient, and as we

focus on the silver linings and strive to return to normalcy, we realize that some changes are

indeed miraculous transformations.

Fund The Transformation

Help us return to our stage – and to you.

The circumstances we’ve all experienced have compelled each of us to adapt

in varying degrees. This is how we survive. Like you, the Hartford Symphony

is being transformed, and while change is a challenge, we are using the

opportunity to learn, to grow and to be better. What we desire above all is to

serve our musicians, our audiences, and our community, just as we have for 77

glorious seasons. Like the butterfly who trusts in nature as she is transformed,

we put our trust in all of YOU.

Your tax-deductible donation to Fund the Transformation helps us return

to you, to the music we love and restores our musicians to our stages. Your

generosity sustains the HSO, supports our musicians and helps us develop

creative new ways to meet the evolving needs of our broadening community.

The Hartford Symphony Orchestra

The Hartford Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1934 as a WPA project and formally established as

the Symphony Society of Greater Hartford in 1936. Angelo Coniglione, Jacques Gordon, Leon Barzin,

Moshe Paranov, and George Heck were the Orchestra’s first Music Directors. With the appointment of

Fritz Mahler in 1953, the HSO began a Young People’s Concert series and made several highly acclaimed

recordings for Vanguard, including a renowned recording of Carmina Burana. In 1964, with Arthur

Winograd as Music Director, the Orchestra grew in artistic stature, performing at Carnegie Hall and other

New York locations to highly favorable reviews. Under the artistic leadership of Michael Lankester from

1985–2000, the HSO received national recognition for its programming innovations, including the popular

Classical Conversations and Family Matinees, as well as a series of landmark theatrical productions such as

Alexander Nevsky. From 2001–2011, Edward Cumming led the HSO to new levels of artistic excellence with

diverse, innovative programming.

The HSO named Carolyn Kuan as its tenth music director in January 2011. She is the first woman and

the youngest person to hold this esteemed title and brings an entirely unique perspective on symphonic

music and its relevance in a 21st century community. She has led the HSO in new and ongoing creative

collaborations with other artistic partners, including, but not limited to Hartford Stage, the Wadsworth

Atheneum, TheaterWorks and the New Britain Museum of American Art.

In January of 2016, Adam Kerry Boyles was chosen as the HSO’s Assistant Conductor. His passion for music

and especially for young people, provides the HSO with an enthusiastic and creative advocate for our

music education and community engagement programming. The artistic leadership, musicians, and staff

have worked together to build deeper, expanded and more meaningful relationships with our long-standing

and new community partners. HSO’s 2016-2017 season introduced Family Concerts in multiple venues

throughout the Greater Hartford community and a new innovative series, HSO: Intermix. Set in multiple

small capacity nontraditional venues throughout the Hartford region, HSO: Intermix encourages close

interaction between musicians and patrons. In furtherance of its renewed commitment to community, in

2017, the HSO began the tradition of holding a public naturalization ceremony on the opening Masterworks

concert of each season and in the first year, Music Director Carolyn Kuan joined with ten others on the

stage to take the oath of citizenship.

In 2020, the HSO’s Music Builds Community campaign, publicly launched with the support of the Hartford

Foundation for Public Giving and key HSO Board members, reached its $10 million goal, a year ahead of

schedule. Most recently, as the HSO celebrated its 75th anniversary season, we proudly revived the HSO’s

Young Artists Competition, which has been maintained by generous support every year since, and was

moved to a virtual platform during the global pandemic.

Thank you for joining the Hartford Symphony

Orchestra’s 2021 Bravo! Gala: Metamorphosēs.

We welcome you to join us in our celebration of

the power of partnerships and community.

HSO’s commitment to community is more than

just talk. In preparing for our 2021 Gala, the HSO

team made a deliberate effort to partner with

local vendors. Our partners have contributed to

the contents of your special gourmet treats, and

many are represented in tonight’s auction. Some

are long-time partners and others are newer,

but our decision to “stay local” acknowledges

the importance of our community. We hope

to encourage each of you to do all you can to

“shop local” to support your own communities,

wherever that may be. If you live in the Greater

Hartford area, please do your share to frequent

the wonderful restaurants, boutiques, retail stores

and other vendors that make up our rich and

vibrant community. By helping each other, we stay

strong. Together.

At Seabury, we’re happy to announce that we’ve made great strides in the vaccination

phase and are now prepared to open the campus as we head into the summer.

Thanks to our partnership with CVS Pharmacy—and the dedication of our Residents,

members and staff—we fully vaccinated more than 875 people between January and

April. We have covered more than 90% of our full-time workforce, 99% of the entire

Resident population and 85% of our Seabury At Home membership.

Those are impressive numbers—and they keep rising as new Residents and

employees join our campus. Thank you to everyone who participated. We are all in

this together and will recover as one large community!
