Darfield

Darfield is a thriving rural town about

35 kilometres west of Christchurch

and 26 kilometres north west of

Rolleston. Originally known as White

Cliffs Junction and later as Horndon

Junction, the town’s name was

changed in 1879 to avoid confusion

with nearby Hornby Junction.

Darfield was named after the original

Darfield in Yorkshire, England, with

the name meaning “field frequented

by deer” or deer field.

Darfield is an administrative and

commercial centre situated in the centre

of the arable and pastoral farmlands of

the Canterbury plains, with surrounding

settlements including Kirwee, Charing

Cross, Hororata, Coalgate, Glentunnel

and Sheffield. Straddling the Great Alpine

Darfirld Clock Tower

Highway (State Highway 73), Darfield is

the main town between Christchurch and

Arthur’s Pass and the West Coast. It is a

gateway to the Southern Alps with its

ski fields, lakes and hiking trails, and is

also a stop on the TranzAlpine rail route

between Christchurch and Greymouth.

The town has all the services and facilities

you would expect and a few more besides,

including one of only three hospitals and

one of the four high schools in the

Selwyn district.

Darfield is known as “The Township

Under the Nor’west Arch” in reference

to a characteristic arch of white cloud

that forms in otherwise clear skies

over the Southern Alps. This weather

phenomenon occurs when the northwesterly

wind drives moist air over the

Southern Alps from the west, resulting

in relief rainfall on the West Coast, a

band of condensation visible above the

mountains and the hot and dry Nor’wester

wind well known to Cantabrians.

Unlike many rural settlements across

the country, Darfield’s population has

increased over recent years and now sits

at around 3,000 people. This is thanks

to growth in the local economy, a strong

sense of community and partly due to

it being within commuting distance of

Christchurch, bolstered by migration

from Christchurch to surrounding areas

following the earthquakes of 2010 and

2011. Darfield was close to the centre

of the 7.1 magnitude earthquake of 4

September 2010, with the Greendale Fault

lying just south of the town. There was

significant damage to buildings in the

area, but thankfully no loss of life.

There are a wide variety of activities in

and around the town. McHughs Forest

Park is a favourite with locals and visitors

alike. This 43-hectare recreational reserve

is on the north-west end of town, with the

main entrance and carpark on Horndon

Street just 1.5km from the town centre.

The reserve is bike and dog-friendly,

with a number of flat walking and biking

tracks that weave through the forest.

Originally established in 1893 as a conifer

plantation providing timber to the area,

McHughs Forest Park contains a variety of

Douglas-fir and other large trees. Thanks

to Darfield Menzshed, there are dozens

of magical creatures roaming the forest

and spotting the many fairy doors on the

enchanted path makes this a wonderful

walk for kids.

Two town walks of about an hour each

start at the Clock Tower, taking in the

town’s scenery and history, including

churches, reserves, parks and memorials

and sweeping views of the Southern Alps.

These easy walks are child and dogfriendly.

The Darfield Farmers Market takes place

every Saturday morning on the main

street, with stalls offering fruit, vegetables,

baking and fresh food, as well, as local

arts and crafts. The Te Huanui Art Gallery

is a modern community gallery that

showcases a wide variety of local and

New Zealand art by established and

emerging artists, open Tuesday to Sunday.

Westview Park (opposite the 4 Square)

has a great modern playground and the

historic Homebush Rail Station has been

relocated and restored here.

The town offers a range of restaurants,

cafés and takeaways to meet your

culinary needs and the delightful gift

stores along the main road are worth

popping into. There is a variety of

accommodation on offer and plenty of

outdoor and adventure activities in the

surrounding area too. Darfield is well

worth a visit when you are next in the

area. Put aside a few hours to explore the

town, enjoy a meal or spend the night!

Nicola’s Notes

Who could believe we are halfway

through the year already?

Halfway through the year and I am

astounded at the sheer number of

community events that groups and

organisations across Selwyn have already

played host to. I have been fortunate enough

to have been invited to attend all sorts of

different events and functions – from the

Rolleston Colour Fun Run, to the Selwyn

Kids Day out, the Leeston Fete, the Malvern

Show, the Kirwee Field Days, the Lions

Convention opening, the West Melton school

fete and a range of ANZAC services –

to name but a few!

It seems there is some form of event,

fundraiser, meeting or gathering just about

every day of the week to address or serve

a purpose or a cause – and that, to me,

speaks volumes for the deeply connected

community we are all part of. In times of

stress and adversity, as the border closure

continues to grind on, it’s heartening to see a

vast array of groups and organisations step

up to meet a vast array of need.

I’ve popped into the Cancer Society’s

Daffodil House in Rolleston recently to meet

just a couple of the hundreds of volunteers

who drive patients to and from treatment in

the city, who sit with them and who drink

cups of tea with them. It all helps. Then

there’s the Selwyn Prostate Cancer Support

Group who meet monthly to give cancer

sufferers and their families a forum to share

stories, ask questions and find answers.

The Selwyn Parenting Network has been

established to help parents and caregivers

in need of support and resources and is

fast becoming a navigation hub for families

needing access to services.

Speaking of a need for services, I’d

particularly like to acknowledge the Rural

Support Trust and the work they’re doing

with east coast farmers gripped by drought,

including a number battling it out on Banks

Peninsula. The north Canterbury branch,

which services rural communities in Selwyn,

is set up to assist individuals and their

families facing challenging circumstances

– whether financial, personal or weatherrelated.

They’re partially funded by the

Government to provide the services they

do, but the rest is scraped together by

fundraising.

The same goes for our local St Johns

ambulances – last month I took part in a

charity golf game in Lincoln to raise money

to support the service and its operations.

Little did I know my appalling short game

would be relied upon to provide some

much-needed support – as of late last year

the charity was staring down a $30 million

nationwide funding shortfall.

Local real estate agents are often seen

organising food drives to keep local food

banks stocked and Lions and Rotary Clubs

across the district are regularly fundraising

for one cause or another.

Everywhere I turn, groups and individuals

are pouring in time and effort to support

those who support the rest of us.

A great chance to recognise outstanding

not-for-profits and community organisations

is the biennial Selwyn Awards where the

Community Volunteering Award is especially

dedicated to those working to improve the

quality of life of others living in our district.

I’m looking forward to the opportunity to

celebrate those who step up for the rest of

us. That celebration will be so thoroughly

deserved.

BuildLink Selwyn

Small Town Friendliness with City

Pricing.

Dave Lemon, the owner of BuildLink

Selwyn, grew up locally in Killinchy

near Leeston. After 20 years working in

Christchurch in the building industry he

moved back to Leeston in 2012. After

putting in a couple of years, he was

again whisked back into the big city life.

When the company he had worked for

moved to Rolleston, it left Leeston and

surrounding areas without a building

supplies store. Dave was presented

with the opportunity of starting his own

retail building supplies store in Leeston.

Unsure of whether this was what he

wanted, a discussion with his then

12-year-old daughter in the car on the

way back from a holiday proved to be

the catalyst to him starting up.

BuildLink is a valuable asset to local

builders, farmers and DIY enthusiasts

in the area. Being a member of a cooperative

building group that leverages

the combined buying power of their

members, they are able to source

product from their suppliers at bulk

prices. That combined with being locally

owned and operated means you get

friendly, professional service from local

experts and the most competitive prices.

Dave strongly believes in not only

offering a caring service, but also giving

back to the community. They sponsor a

number of clubs and charities in Leeston

and Christchurch, including the local

tennis club, rugby club, Selwyn Lions

Golf Tournament, the Special Children’s

Christmas Party as well as the Ellesmere

A&P Association.

Dave’s philosophy of “Make Stuff

Happen” has been a key reason for his

incredible success in the new business.

In just three years it has grown beyond

his wildest expectations. In 2019 the

BuidLink Selwyn team won the BuildLink

attitude award. Following on from that,

his success was recognised again by

BuildLink in 2020 when his business (out

of about 50 stores nationwide) won the

annual Supreme Award. If you ever ask

Dave about this success and recognition

he will most likely tell you, it was not

him, it was his team and his customers

who won the awards.

What makes your business successful?

Great product or service. Strong customer

and supplier relationships. Robust finance.

The first two components are relatively selfexplanatory.

Finance is the area where most small

business hit a roadblock. Reasons are

different: finance may be too hard, too

boring, or too overwhelming. The reality is,

profitability is important, cash is crucial and

paying the right amount of taxes is part of

being a successful business. The outcome of

neglecting finances is not good: hamstrung

growth, missed opportunities, or in some

cases going out of business.

We are Lion Hill Limited, an online,

Selwyn-based public accounting practice.

Finance is our specialty.

You will benefit the most from our services

if you have an established business that is

growing too big or fast for you to attend to

You take care of delivering a great product or

service and we will take care of finance:

• Deal with your annual accounts and tax

compliance (did I pay the right amount of the

right tax at the right time?)

• Help you with financial reporting (what

are my financial results? How do I do the

forecasts and budgets?)

• Guide you on bigger financial decisions

(should I buy or lease that truck? Should I

take a loan or do hire purchase? Should I

bring new investors on board)?

Like many of our clients, we are a family

business. The founders and directors,

Firangiz Radcliffe and Jamil Eldar, are

siblings and our senior manager Andrea

Eldar is Jamil’s wife. We have young families

with kids under five (we would say yes to

meeting over a coffee!) and we call Rolleston

our home. We understand what it takes to

run a family business – the fun, the ups and

downs and most importantly the true passion

for what you do that fuels all that hard,

tireless work.

How do you know you will get a great service

from us?

• We hold public practice certificates from

CPA Australia and CAANZ;

• Our two directors have a combined

30 years of experience, including Big 4

• We have client testimonials to back it.

Resure Insurance Advisers

For Resure founder Jordan Clemence,

providing insurance cover is about

more than writing policies; it’s a way

to help Kiwis protect the things they

care about and deliver exceptional

customer experiences along the way.

Jordan is a proud Dad and owned a

hospitality business before starting

Resure, so he knows just how

important it is to protect your family,

home and income.

After seeing an opportunity to improve

customer experiences in the insurance

industry, Jordan started Resure with his

star administrator Sarah. The company

quickly grew and Resure now has five

financial advisors and two administrators.

Resure are independent advisors, meaning

they can compare what’s on offer from

all the insurance companies and provide

tailored cover to suit your lifestyle, family

and budget. They’ll also support you when

you need to make an insurance claim,

which is where Resure’s advisors really go

above and beyond. Jordan says this is the

most important part of their role; if you’re

claiming on your insurance, chances are

you’re already in a stressful situation.

Having someone on your side, who can

speak to your insurance company on your

behalf and make sure you get the right

outcome, removes extra stress during a

SELWYNConnection PAGE 7

challenging time.

Through Resure, Jordan also hopes to

educate people about their insurance

options and help them take a more

proactive approach to insurance. He says

Kiwis generally take out insurance at

touch-points – when they buy their first

house, have children, or when something

happens to a friend or family member.

Having cover in place before these

milestones gives you peace of mind and

can save time and money in the long run.

There’s no cost to using an insurance

advisor and because Resure can compare

policies from a range of providers, clients

often end up saving money on their

premiums.

If you’ve been wondering about your

insurance options, have a chat with Jordan

and the team. It’s completely obligationfree

and you’ll get the advice you need to

protect the things that matter.

Your Winter Heating – A Few Tips

Here are a few tips to help keep your

fire healthy and you safe during the

winter season:

Plan ahead. Order your fire wood early –

many dealers have good prices in summer,

particularly before Christmas for the earlybirds

and savings can be made. If you can,

leave the wood out in the sun, or stack in

a sunny place where there is good airflow

to allow air to circulate and dry the wood

further.

Routine maintenance checks.

If you have an existing fire it is imperative

that your fire is checked annually, both

inside and out and during winter that you do

a quick visual inspection each day as you

light it. This is for your safety and ensures

it will continue to perform as well as it

did when first installed. Checking the fire

bricks, air tubes, door and glass ropes is as

important as having the flue cleaned.

Things to look for

• Cracked bricks: hairline cracks are okay

to continue to use however it is a warning

to replace them soon. Where there are large

cracks the fire should not be used until they

are replaced.

• Air seeming to suck or flames emanating

from around the door or window is a sign

that the door and glass seals are not

working. These need to seal tight. If the fire

gets too much air, while it might be burning

hot, it is also risking over-heating, so it is

time to have the seals replaced.

• Displaced/missing bricks and (top)

baffles should be replaced immediately. To

continue to use your fire without these risks

damaging the fire box from over-heating

and is a fire risk to your home due to the

excessive heat coming off the fire.

• Birds in the flue are not an immediate

issue but their nest building could be...

Get your flue cleaned and have a bird net

installed.

• Cracks in the fire box: it might seem

logical not to use your fire however logic

doesn’t come naturally to everybody...

• Rust and bulging at the base of the flue

is a sign that the flue steel is compromised

and needs replacing with some urgency.

• Glowing flues are generally a sign of the

flue being overheated and blocked and that

a chimney fire is either in progress or about

to happen. This is an emergency situation.

One of the fastest ways to put it out is to

quick soak a roll of loo paper under the tap

and to drop it in the fire, the steam it gives

off will assist with putting out the fire. If in

doubt, call the fire brigade immediately.

• Using your fire: depending on where you

live and what sort of fire you have there

are differences in how your fire can and

should be used... some fires can be turned

down lower than others however it is worth

noting that just because it can be turned

down doesn’t mean it should be all the

time. Fires that spend a lot of time turned

down will typically require the flue cleaned

more often than one regularly used on full.

This is because when the fire is burning

cooler it does not draw as well and the

heavier emissions catch on the flue sides

and build up. A regular hot burn can take

care of some of this but not all. A fire used

on high will always burn cleaner.

Avoid Before And

After Renovation

Disaster

Fixed price

How often do you hear about amazing

home contracts transformations that are soon

followed by the phrase “completely

blew the budget”? I’m tired of hearing

the renovation horror stories that end

in crippling debt and unfinished work.

Let’s put a plan in place to get you

the home of your dreams without the

doom and gloom of overspending.

Here are my first three tips:

1. Define your ‘why’.

Write a list of the reasons why you wanted

to take on this project in the first place.

Perhaps you’ve simply outgrown your

current home and you need bigger living

areas and more storage. Maybe you’re after

open plan living to better suit the family.

List as many reasons as you can and be

very specific.

2. What do you want?

Write a list of everything you want in your

renovation, if the sky was the limit for your

budget, what would you include. I’m talking

high ceilings, shiny new appliances and a

large outdoor deck.

3. Prioritise.

Now let’s put those ideas to work, we

need to put our practical pants on and go

through and prioritise these points. What do

we actually need right now and what would

be nice to have. Put these points into order

of priority.

Fantastic work, you are well on your way to

having

With

a very well

you,

thought out renovation.

The Right next topic through

we discuss is your budget,

more importantly, over capitalisation. This is

where the wheels can start falling off when

it comes to planning. I have put together a

free ultimate renovation checklist for this

exact purpose which walks you through

how you can increase the value of your

home without blowing the budget. You can

download it from our website.

Tip The Balance In Favour

Of Winter Wellness

Whilst many people cope well with the

shorter darker days of winter, feeling

little effect, some will notice a drop

in energy, change in motivation and

altered sleep patterns. For others, the

effects extend much further and can be

debilitating.

If you know this to be true for yourself, now

is a great time to get proactive, performing

a “lifestyle audit”.

Here are my top suggestions:

1 Look at where your stressors are.

Is there anything you can shift?

Exercise: do you need to rethink overall

load/type/intensity/frequency?

Work: are there any subtle changes you

could make to reduce stress?

Home life: household chores, parenting

etc… is there anything you could do more

efficiently? Or ask someone else to help

with?

2 Sleep: in order to help align your

environment with your internal biology a

little better, it would be good to turn the

telly off, put computers and phones away

earlier and head to bed with some soft

light and a good book.

3 Diet: Perhaps pulling back on some of

the “extra’s” you can get away with in

summer? How about your intake of fresh

fruit and veggies – the whole seasonal

rainbow load? Personally, I CRAVE raw

salads and slaws during winter. Weird I

know, but studies do show a link between

raw vegetable and fruit intake and feelings

of increased vitality and flourishing.

Are you meeting your protein

requirements? I would suggest that if

you are someone with mood related

symptoms you need somewhere in the

range 1.5-2 grams/kg of body weight,

divided evenly across the day, with a

decent hit at breakfast time.

4 Sunlight: How can you incorporate more

natural light into your day? Especially in

the morning. Without sunglasses. Even on

the darkest of winter days the strength

of the light outside exceeds that of the

brightest indoor artificial lighting.

5 Consider nutritional supplements:

a really good quality multivitamin

supplement (the sort you purchase

through a health practitioner not those

sold over the counter), Vitamin D+K2

(Clinicians does a good one) and possibly

a high strength Omega 3 supplement

(again, to be sure of the quality hunt out a

practitioner who can recommend one or

do your research).

6 Finally, if you know this area is a

challenge for you, do talk to your doctor.

Rather than finding yourself at the bottom

of the cliff needing a (metaphorical)

ambulance, it could be better to

supplement your healthy lifestyle practices

with a little, low dose medication.

What Is Osteopathy?

Osteopaths use a variety of

techniques to help correct abnormal

physical conditions which include

back and neck pain, headache,

physical injuries to bones, joints and

muscles and many other physical

and functional disorders.

A wide variety of treatment techniques

are used, tailored to each person’s needs,

which could include manipulation and

mobilisation to joints and soft tissues,

muscle energy stretches and cranialsacral

therapy. The Osteopath will

use appropriate treatment, after fully

assessing the patient.

Osteopaths are front line health

professionals and work with other

registered health professionals including

general practitioners, specialists and

radiologists to provide the best service to

their patients.

Osteopaths are able to treat ACC claims

patients without referral from a medical

doctor and refer for X-rays and to other

health professionals if required.

What is the history?

Osteopathy was born in the 1870s in

the USA, before even the discovery of

penicillin. The founder of osteopathy,

Dr Andrew Taylor Still MD, stated that:

“Osteopathy is based on the perfection

of Nature’s work. When all parts of the

human body are in line, we have health.

When they are not the effect is disease.

When the parts are readjusted disease

gives place to health. The work of the

Osteopath is to adjust the body from

the abnormal to the normal; then the

abnormal condition gives place to the

normal and health is the result of the

normal condition.”

PAGE 14 SELWYNConnection COMMUNITY

Unique & Treasured – The Growing

Impact Of Selwyn Parenting Network

When a pro-active group of parents

came together in 2011, little did

they know they were establishing

the foundations of a charitable

organisation which would grow far

beyond their wildest expectations.

A post-quake parenting course

propagated the seeds for a

grassroots parenting organisation

and a decade on a vast meadow of

growth blankets Selwyn as we have

fast become a unique and treasured

‘go-to’ signpost in the lives of many.

Selwyn Parenting Network (SPN) is

an organisation that has family and

community at its’ heart; we’ve worked

hard to foster collaborations with likeminded

organisations, in turn raising our

collective impact in the community.

Our common goal is clear: Empowering

parents, families and caregivers of

children of ALL ages; ensuring that

everyone has access to resources,

regardless of demographic or

circumstance. Our work over the past 10

years has encouraged others to learn,

play, connect and thrive through our

collaborations, networks, family events,

educational experiences and digital

platforms. It’s been a model that has

served us well in establishing our vision

for confident, caring and connected

families; maintaining an educative and

supportive district wide network is key.

Exponential growth in Selwyn means

that our focus must remain on providing

accessible pathways to all services

needed by parents, caregivers, families,

children and youth and we truly welcome

all organisations to collaborate in any way

they feel they can. Through organisations

truly putting action to their core values

around community and wellbeing, we can

all make a difference.

Parenting is not easy; many of us learn

strengths that we never knew we had

and realise fears we never knew existed.

But with the right supports, connections

and networks underpinned by community

connectedness, we don’t have to face it

alone. As the old proverb goes, it takes a

village to raise a child.

Selwyn’s Funniest Pet Photo Competition Winners

Here are the six winners of our Selwyn’s Funniest Pet Photo competition. The many entries were narrowed down to 27

finalists and then people voted for their favourites on our Selwyn Connect Facebook page. A huge thanks to all those

who entered and voted! All six winners will each receive a $20 voucher from The Lincoln Pantry, a pet-friendly, quirky

café and boutique grocery store on Eastfield Drive, Lincoln serving the best organic coffee and nutritious cabinet foods.

Owner Vanessa Winchester (Kirwee)

Here is my almost 20-year-old horse, Barney,

munching on an apple. Which in turn means you get

covered in apple juice. Love this photo because he

looks like he’s laughing at me!

Owner Nicola Woodward (Lincoln)

Fonzie is a doggy entrepreneur. CEO (Cainine

Executive Officer for Little Paws in Lincoln), dog

model, published author, cuddle monster and Scooby

snack tester. At the end of the day he collapses on

the couch!

Owner Ellen Rose (Southbridge)

Dobby is a four-month-old grey possum who I have

had since he was just a pink hairless wee baby. He

is a super quirky character who will eat absolutely

anything. He loves zooming around the room over

everything and sitting on people’s heads!

Owner Aimee Taylor (Rolleston)

Poppy (small dog) is 11 years old and Willow is eightmonths-old.

Willow is being an annoying younger

sibling in this photo.

Owner Stevie Korstanje (Springston)

Bruno, one of my pugs, having the time of his life at

the kennels in Lincoln.

Owner Anthony Fomison (Lincoln)

Harry Bird is a simple cat who loves his tap.
