5A BRIEF HISTORY OF IATPIn 1986, leaders of rural and farm movements from aroundthe world gathered in Geneva, Switzerland to discuss thedeepening farm crisis that was forcing farmers off the landand devastating rural communities. It quickly becameclear that many of the obstacles facing farmers in theU.S. were the same challenges facing farmers in Europe,Asia and Africa, and that international trade agreementswere harming rural communities across the globe. At theconclusion of the Geneva meeting, a small group of ruraland farm leaders — who became IATP’s original boardof directors — identified the need for a new organizationto examine the links between global policy and localcommunities.systems approach connects global trade andfinancial rules to locally-driven solutions thatstrengthen community food systems, valuefarmers and communities and respond tothe climate crisis. With our headquarters inMinneapolis, as well as offices and staff inWashington, D.C., Maine and Berlin, Germany,IATP continues to expand our global partnerships,adapting ideas, strategies and experiencesfrom the global community to the challengesfacing local communities.Since its founding, IATP has played a unique role inanalyzing international trade and agriculture policiesand the ramifications of these policies on rural communities.In the 1990s, IATP began to also promote positivealternatives to economically, socially and environmentallydestructive agricultural and trade practices. Today, webuild upon our history and deep partnerships to serveas the policy arm of this larger social and political movementfor change in the U.S. and around the world.
