PROJECT HIGHLIGHTSBunkers Hill,TrelawnyBUNKERSHILLCONTINUED FROM 33Foundation (SDF), Denzil Wilks, whowas then the president of Uniques,Hutchinson was sent off to ClarendonCollege under the tutelage of legendaryschoolboy coach Winston ChungFah to compete in the daCosta Cup.“We managed to contact WinstonChung Fah, who was then the coachof Clarendon College, and we literallyshipped him off. With his brilliance,Clarendon College won the daCostaCup and ultimately the Olivier Shield,”Wilks outlined.Powered by Hutchinson’s goals,Clarendon College stormed into thefinal of the daCosta Cup competition,to face off against St Elizabeth TechnicalHigh School. The school from Chapeltonsecured a two-nil victory in the first ofthe two-leg affair and entered the secondmatch as favourites.MISDIRECTIONBut there was a challenge.Hutchinson, their star player, arrivedat the match with a heavily bandagedleft thigh, and sat on the bench tostart the game. St Elizabeth pouncedon their wounded rivals and scoredan early goal to take a 1-0 lead in thereturn fixture.Coach Chung Fah signalled toHutchinson and told him to undohis bandages. To the disbelief ofthe St Elizabeth Technical fan base,Hutchinson came on and guided his42‘DEN DEN’team to a 3-1 victory, winning thecompetition 5-1 on aggregate. Why did Coach Chung Fah opt formisdirection with his star player?Hutchinson offers this explanation.“Everybody had seen me before, walking and I was okay. And thenChung Fah came up with this planto wrap me up and get them (StElizabeth) vulnerable. He played itout like it was a show, he asked acouple of his supporters to wrapme up, from waist down on to theleft foot. I was to play it off like amovie, tip on my toe and act likeI was really hurt. When Chung Fahunwrapped me, it was pandemonium,”Hutchinson laughed. “Inhindsight I should have asked him,‘why did you wrap me up like that?’But Chungy is full of those types oftheatrics. I guess him press the rightbutton at the time.”This victory helped Hutchinsonearn an athletic scholarship to a collegein the United States. This is whereone would hope the story ends withHutchinson taking advantage of theopportunity to go on and become atop-tier footballer in America. However, it was not to be. Due tosome personal missteps, Hutchinsonspent time in prison, and subsequentlywas sent back to Jamaica torestart his life.HELP AND REDEMPTIONThis story does not have a sad ending, however, as Hutchinson landedsquarely on his feet. For the past 22 years he has beenworking with the SDC to lend a helpingSUNDAY, JULY 18, 2021hand to the poor and vulnerable.“One of the things that drives memost of all is to help people to movefrom being in dire need to being ina better position. I feel good abouthelping them move their lives frompoint A to point B,” he said.Perhaps even more impressively,Hutchinson, with financial supportfrom the SDF’s Athletes WelfareProgramme, was able to completethe tertiary education he had begundecades earlier.General Manager of the SDF DenzilWilks explained: “We had discussions... and I said to him, you started universityoverseas, you got to a certainpoint you would have earned somecredit. Is there a possibility of you gettingthose credits and seeing whetheryou can complete your studies? Wecommunicated with G.C. Foster, andthe SDF’s board of directors saw it fitto give him some financial assistanceto get into G.C. Foster College.”Hutchinson says it was difficultgoing back into the classroom afterall those years, but he persevered andis on the brink of earning a bachelor’sdegree in sports education. Thisis another record in the making. Adegree that has taken over 40 yearsto complete. A sterling lesson inperseverance and the benefits of asupport structure.Today, he remains focused on lendingsupport to those in need and ishappy his story can motivate othersto bounce back from life’s challengesand create new opportunities, wherenone seemed available.
