The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based
Violence is an international campaign to challenge
violence perpetrated against women and girls. The
campaign runs every year from 25 November, the
International Day for the Elimination of Violence
against Women, to 10 December, Human Rights Day.
You may recall last autumn when orange ribbons
were attached to the Wellmeadow railings and many
Blairgowrie shops ‘oranged’ their window displays
from 24th November until the 10th December, orange
being the colour of the campaign. Jean Campbell, the
local Soroptimist who initiated the local event in 2020,
is hoping that this can be repeated in 2021, thus raising awareness about violence against
women, the incidence of which has sadly risen during the pandemic.
