Dit zou alleen kans van slagen hebben doorRUDOLF ELIASSAID GOODBYE“I’VE LIVED IN MANY PLACES, BUTMY HEART IS ALWAYS IN SURINAME”As the Managing Director of a leading company forSuriname, you hardly have free time. Rudolf Elias, whoretired as Managing Director of Staatsolie onMay 31, 2021, finally has some spare time. Of course,as far as new challenges allow. We look back with himand try to catch a glimpse of his future.A stubble beard, tanned skin, and slightly longer hair thanwe’re used to from him. In a large leather armchair, arelaxed Rudolf Elias sits on the other side of the screen. The interview takes place via Microsoft Teams because hewas in Italy at that time, on vacation before his retirement. He has a lot more time for his hobbies: fitness, readingand cooking. Occasionally he even watches television, which didn’t happen at all during the past ten years, and hequite likes that, Rudolf says with a smile. In a few words itbecomes clear that the documentaries he watches are alsoabout the things he passionately speaks about: cooking,Suriname’s biodiversity and, how could it be otherwise, theoil industry. It is the oil industry for which Rudolf has been working fortwelve years. The last six years as Managing Director ofStaatsolie, a demanding position that required him to workfrom five in the morning until about ten in the evening.Every workday he was at the office from 7:15 a.m. untilabout 4:30 p.m. After that, Rudolf had allotted time in hisschedule for sports until seven in the evening. There wasstill quite a bit of work to do after that. Now that Rudolfis retired and has much more time left, he will regularlycompete in half marathons and triathlons. He still wants toparticipate in a ‘half Iron Man’, a sporting event that testsphysical and mental strength. It consists of a 1.9km swim,90km bike ride and 21.1km run.Sharpened focusRudolf emphasizes that he enjoyed his work with all thechallenges and high demands. The main reason whyhe retired? “For your own development and that of thecompany, it is better not to work in one position for morethan five to six years. You must keep moving, otherwise youend up in a comfort zone. Everyone knows exactly whenyou’re going to get angry, how you will react, what youwill say. It is good that everyone is back on edge and hasa sharper focus, because there is a new director.” Rudolfadmits that six years have flown by. If possible, he wouldlike to continue for another six years. “It would be nice, butnot wise,” he says. “Staatsolie benefits from continuousmovement and this will be good for everyone. Staatsolieis a great company. However, it is not about the companybut about the people. They form the organization andnot the other way around. In the past six years we haveexperienced strong growth together.”Staatsolie Nieuws • No. 1 • 202119
