THE HEAD COACH
PP
FRANKIE LOOKING
FOR TEAM TO GET
JUST REWARDS
Good afternoon and welcome back to Deepdale. This is our fourth
game of the season and we all know that we haven’t got the results we
would have wanted so far.
However, I have said many times, that you
cannot live in the past, you have to look to
the future and today we have a chance to
try and put on a performance and earn a result.
We welcome Darren and the staff, players and
fans of Peterborough United to Deepdale. It will be
familiar surroundings for Darren and he has done
a great job since going back in there and earned a
fantastic promotion last season. They will provide
a stern test for us today and one we are looking
forward to meeting head on.
Looking back on Tuesday night, I am bitterly
disappointed that we got nothing from the game.
I didn’t think Huddersfield caused us many
problems whatsoever. I thought that was more like
what I expect from a Preston North End team.
We looked a lot more solid at the back; our wing
backs were really aggressive getting up the pitch,
we had a focal point up front and willing runners.
For me, we looked like the team that I know we
can be.
We were pretty comfortable on the bench, that’s
why we were getting Emil ready, we were going to
try to win the game. We felt the game was there
for us to go and win it. Unfortunately, as we tried
to do that, we got sucker-punched.
Everyone was bitterly disappointed, especially
for you – the fans, who were excellent in your
support and numbers, but if we keep producing
those type of efforts, hard work and endeavour,
we’ll get our just rewards
I THOUGHT THAT
WAS MORE LIKE
WHAT I EXPECT FROM
A PRESTON NORTH
END TEAM.
We are desperate to get that first win on the
board. We are one point worse off than we were
at the start of last year, in the first three games
we picked up a point. What we need to do is with
two games at home coming up, starting today, is
to try to make sure that we win the games and be
more of a threat going forward – if we can play
like Tuesday and be clinical in front of goal, we
have every chance of doing that.
Thank you again for your continued support,
please get right behind the team for the full 90
minutes.
Enjoy the game,
PLAYER INTERVIEW
PP
COMING BACK AN ‘EASY
DECISION’ FOR DAN
Goalkeeper Daniel Iversen says his decision to return to Deepdale in 2021/22 was an
easy one, after the fans’ reaction to him on social media during his successful loan in
the second half of the last campaign.
The new North End No.12, taking the shirt after the
retirement from playing of Paul Gallagher, told The One
And Only that the people and the supporters were what
made his decision an easy one.
“I have looked forward to being back and in front of
the supporters for the first time,” he told the matchday
programme. “When I was at the club before, the fans were
amazing on social media and I had good team-mates, so it was
an easy club to come back into and it was important for me I
had a good club, not just how high they were in the league –
the people at the club were important and there are some nice
people here and it was an easy choice for me.”
The move back from the Foxes on a season-long loan was one
that he had expected all summer, but he understood why it had
taken longer than people may have anticipated.
“I always thought it was 90 per cent sorted out and the two
clubs were talking from early on, so everything was sorted
and then it was just down to waiting for the green light from
Leicester for when to go, when Kasper [Schmeichel] and
Wardy [Danny Ward] were back from international duty.
“I always hoped they would get through [their games at the
Euros] and stay fit and come back strong, but I also wanted
them to stay long – especially Denmark – and they did that.”
Euro 2020 was a positive one for the Danes, after the horrific
start that saw Christian Eriksen needing life-saving treatment
on the pitch of their opening game against Iceland.
Dan was on stand-by for the national team and admits it was
a shock to watch, but was delighted with the team’s overall
efforts.
“I didn’t think too much about it [being on stand-by] in the
summer; I stayed fit - like I always do – so if they called me, I
was ready – although I wouldn’t have seen a ball for a couple
of weeks, but physically I was ready, but I didn’t think about it
too much.
“I was away with a couple of friends to watch the [first] game
and it was really shocking. No-one really said anything and
then we heard it was a heart attack and no one knew what to
say. When they played the second half we wondered whether
we should go home or stay and watch.
“A lot of the players knew Christian personally and his family
as well, so it was hard for them – especially, to go and play
the rest of the game. You could see how strong the group
were, not just as players, but also outside the pitch as well. It
is a strong group and did unbelievably well.
“I thought we would beat England, but they are a good side,
with Premier League players all over. It was a good game
for them and I was also happy for England – I was hoping
Denmark would win, but I was happy for England to get
through to the final.”
The loanee’s opening game probably came earlier than
expected, when he had to replace Declan Rudd ten minutes
into the first game of the season, against Hull City, something
he says he had to be prepared for.
“It is really hard to be a reserve goalkeeper,” he continued.
“You have to be prepared mentally in case something happens
and on the opening day that happened with Declan and I had
to be ready.
“It is the first time I have done that, so it was a different
occasion. It is different to being an outfield substitute and what
happened to Dec was his head, so you are hoping he is okay,
so I was pleased he got up the first time, but then I felt sad
for him when he went down at the goal kick. I had to be ready
though and then try to play my game.
“It is a hard game for goalkeepers. I want the best for all the
goalkeepers in the club here – not only for Dec, but for Matt
[Hudson] and Rippers [Connor Ripley] – I want the best for
them – but only one can play and it is therefore a difficult
position and whoever plays, you have to support them and try
and help them win the game we are in. The most important
thing is the team,” he added.
THE ONE AND ONLY
Andrew Hughes
100 Not Out
Cricket’s new The Hundred format has been dominating sports headlines in
recent weeks, but PNE’s Andrew Hughes celebrated his own happy hundred
with PNE in the Carabao Cup win against Mansfield Town last Tuesday.
The defender reached the 100-appearance
mark for the Lilywhites, accumulating the
minutes over three years at the club since
making the move from this afternoon’s
visitors Peterborough United in 2018.
It wasn’t a bad night to reach the landmark, either, as
Frankie McAvoy’s men came out 3-0 winners in the first
round tie against the League Two side.
Hughesy kept his place in the starting line-up from the
season opener against Hull City, but wasn’t actually
aware of the personal significance of the game until
spotting a celebratory graphic on social media.
He laughed: “I didn’t actually know until I saw it on
Twitter and Instagram!
“It’s a great achievement for myself. If I’m being honest,
I’d have liked to get to that a little bit earlier, but due to a
few injuries that was kind of delayed, but it’s always nice
to hit that milestone.
“It’s a sense of achievement to have played 100 games
for this club. It was a great night to do it, a clean
sheet, into the hat for the next round and I thought we
played well.”
The Welshman sat at the left of the defensive three with
Greg Cunningham to his left at wing back, but rewind just
over three years to June 2018 and Andrew’s move from
Peterborough to North End was partly dependant on
Greg’s departure.
IT’S A SENSE OF
ACHIEVEMENT TO
HAVE PLAYED 100
GAMES FOR THIS
CLUB.
Once PNE’s No.3 had completed a move to Premier
League side Cardiff City, the door was then open for
Hughes to come in, but according to Posh owner Darragh
MacAnthony on Twitter, they had turned down three bids
from the Lilywhites.
Hughesy said: “He’s quite lively on social media so I was
looking on there at the time and he’s not afraid to voice
his opinion. He was voicing it as things were going along
and that was kind of keeping me in the loop!
“I was having the odd phone call from my agent and
stuff, but mainly it was his Twitter keeping me updated,
but we got it over the line in the end, so I was happy.
“To be honest it didn’t actually take that long. I think the
three bids came in quite quick succession, so it wasn’t
like I was waiting for a very long time. Once I knew about
it, and Greg did go, it got moved on very quickly.”
THE BIG INTERVIEW
THE ONE AND ONLY
THE BIG INTERVIEW
THERE’S
NO EGOS HERE,
EVERYONE’S JUST
SINGING OFF THE
SAME HYMN SHEET
AND IT’S REALLY
GOOD.
His first season at the club didn’t get off to the best of
starts, though, as Alex Neil’s side won just once in their
opening 11 games, but a 4-0 victory at home to Wigan
Athletic seemed to give the side a major boost.
Speaking a couple of days after the Mansfield victory, the
defender said: “Every season I feel like there’s a turning
point and there’s some games that kick you on, that
Wigan game was one and I hope that’s the case with the
cup win on Tuesday.
“I think there are crucial games in the season where
it feels like a turning point and I know it’s so early on
with only one league game, but I hope that’s the case on
Tuesday.”
PNE turned their season around in that 2018/19 campaign,
going from struggling at one end of the division to
pushing at the other for a place in the Play-Offs.
Between January and March, the side went on a
12-match unbeaten run, culminating in a last-gasp
victory at home to Birmingham City, and there was real
belief both internally and externally that a top six place
could be achieved.
“I actually went off with a hamstring injury before the
goal, but there was a real togetherness,” said Andrew.
“Everyone was in it, the boys who weren’t in the squad,
the boys on the bench, everyone.
“Everyone was together and that’s the one thing that I’ve
noticed during my time at the club. There’s no egos here,
everyone’s just singing off the same hymn sheet and it’s
really good.”
The next bulk of his appearances for the club came
in a Covid-disrupted 2018/19 season, when fans were
unfortunately not able to turn up to football grounds on
a Saturday afternoon, rain or shine, to support the club
they love.
Hughesy said: “It was a weird stage for everyone. All of
a sudden you’re going from fans in the stadium to no one
at all, and that brings a change in atmosphere.
“At the start it almost felt like we were playing reserve
games where you just play at the training ground and no
one’s there, but it’s been really good so far to have the
fans back to create that atmosphere again.
“It was just weird. We got sent the fitness programmes
to keep ticking over and it was tough because you’re
having to wake up thinking where you’re going to go and
train rather than coming into the training ground.
“I think we definitely take things for granted, the training
ground is amazing, so coming in here every day again is
just a good feeling.”
He, along with everybody else, is delighted to see
supporters back inside grounds again, and the Deepdale
faithful will be back this afternoon to watch the
Lilywhites take on Peterborough.
THE BIG INTERVIEW
The 29-year-old first joined Posh in 2016, making the
move from Newport County, who he had signed for as a
teenager following his release from Cardiff City.
He said: “It just felt like it was the right time [to sign for
Peterborough]. When I was at Newport, I did my ACL and
I was set to be moving on before that, but then obviously
I picked up that injury.
“It almost felt like a delay in my career, but at the same
time I feel like everything happens for a reason, and
when that move to Peterborough came around it was a
no brainer for me at the time.
I DON’T WANT TO
GET TO MID-SEASON
AND LET IT FILTER
OUT, I WANT TO PLAY
FOR SOMETHING.
“Grant McCann was in charge and he was really good.
He was young, enthusiastic and his man management
was good.
“I haven’t got a bad word to say about him. He helped
me leaps and bounds, so I really enjoyed working
under him.”
Steve Evans then replaced McCann during Hughesy’s
second year at the club and, despite people’s outside
perceptions of him, he enjoyed his time playing for the
experienced manager.
“I really liked him,” he affirmed. “A lot of people probably
won’t say the same, but it’s the old cliche isn’t it, if a
manager likes you and you’re doing well for them then
I haven’t got a bad word to say about him. He liked me, I
liked him and I was fine with him.
“I think people have a misjudgement of him. Obviously
he’s aggressive on the sidelines, but he’s fighting for
decisions to go his way, so I think the opposition players
and managers hate him because every decision he wants
to go his way, but he’s just passionate about football.”
Neither McCann or Evans quite managed to lead Posh
into the top six in League One, though, during the time
PNE’s No.16 was there, and that’s something which still
disappoints the defender.
He added: “We definitely underachieved there with the
squad we had. We had an amazing squad down there for
that league.
“I loved my time down there, but one thing I did miss
down there was definitely getting to the Play-Offs or
getting promoted.”
Now playing under Frankie McAvoy at Preston North
End, Hughesy is hopeful that he and his team-mates can
achieve something special together.
“I’m into my fourth season here now so I think I’d like
to see us reach the final of a cup or really push for the
Play-Offs this year. I don’t want to get to mid-season and
let it filter out, I want to play for something.
“I one hundred per cent think we can do it with the
players that we’ve got, and there’s boys who have been
here a long time. They’ve tasted that promotion when
they got from League One to the Championship so I’m
sure they’d be eager to do it again in a higher division.”
Peterborough United will be aiming to
build on their first victory since being
promoted back to the Championship,
having beaten Derby County 2-1 last
weekend.
The Posh were able to overcome their
eight-year stay in League One last
season in a crucial 3-3 comeback
against rivals Lincoln City, ensuring a
runners-up spot and promotion to the
Championship. In what proved to be a
hugely competitive battle for the top
spots, Peterborough finished seven
points clear of Blackpool in third.
Asserting their dominance, the club
highlighted the attacking capabilities
they possess, finishing as top scorers
last season with 83 goals and a goal
difference of 37. The notable centre
forward Jonson Clarke-Harris provided
a staggering 31 of those goals himself,
with seven coming from the penalty
spot. This cemented him as League One’s
top scorer for the 2020/21 season also.
Now heading into the new season,
Peterborough have been recruiting
wisely in the market, taking players
such as Jack Marriott from Derby
County on a free transfer, and signing
heavily demanded Jorge Grant to a
three-year deal from Lincoln.
It would be foolish to underestimate
Darren Ferguson’s side, as the manager
has been able to retain the majority
of his winning squad. Centre back and
captain Mark Beevers, for example,
has impressive experience in the
Championship, having made over 250
appearances across four clubs. It will
no doubt prove difficult to break down
such a team, so PNE will have to bring
their A-game in this fixture if they hope
to be victorious.

1
Captain of the Posh and experienced in the Championship,
31-year-old Mark Beevers is no stranger to the basics of
defending. Playing 45 games last season, he clocked in
just over 4,000 minutes of game time to earn second place
with 87 points, two points short of League One champions
Hull City. Beevers traded Bolton for the Cambridgeshire
side in July 2019 and has now played 87 matches since
then. Being 6ft 3in tall, it will mean attackers may find
difficulty winning aerial battles, and he may just score
goals of his own from corners. Mark was awarded
captaincy upon arrival at the club and described winning
promotion to the Championship with Posh as the proudest
day of his career.
Pym decided to join the Posh from his only previous
club, Exeter City, in July 2019. The English shot-stopper
would go on to take the 2020/21 League One season by
storm, recording 16 clean sheets in 40 league matches,
only conceding 38 goals. Pym was vital in Peterborough’s
promotion push, meaning he can now face the challenge
of his first time in the Championship. Wearing the No.1
shirt, the ‘keeper will look to ensure that his side can
maintain their place in the league, after spending eight
long years away from it when relegated after the 2012/13
When discussing price tags of players, Szmodics
certainly justifies his £1m transfer from Bristol City
to Peterborough in September 2020. Last season, the
midfielder picked up 15 goals and eight assists in 42
games. Fifteen goals is a wonderful achievement for
a striker, let alone a midfielder. Despite being born in
Colchester, he has both an English and Irish citizenship.
After playing for Colchester United, making 162
appearances, Szmodics is just 18 goals and four assists
short of his record there in 105 fewer appearances for
the Posh. He started his career with the club wearing the
No.9 shirt, before taking No.15 in his promotion season
and has since been awarded the No.7 after confirmation
in July.
Double digits for assists is no easy feat in a league season,
right midfield in 2020/21. Born in Chelmsford, Ward left
fifth tier side Woking FC in January 2018 for Peterborough.
It will be interesting to see how he adapts to the style of
play in the Championship, as this will be his first season
here in his professional career. While he is known as
a right midfielder, Ward also played 11 of his 37 league
games last season on the right wing, where he scored
three and assisted five. A notable game of his came when
he assisted twice against champions Hull City away from
home in a 2-1 victory.
10
Peterborough United striker Clarke-Harris picked up
two trophies at the end of season awards for his club. He
was named the foreverposh player of the year due to his
whopping 31 league goals and three assists which ensured
promotion from League One, and also took the players’
player of the season award. The goal machine strictly
played in the centre forward role and joined the Posh
from Bristol Rovers in August 2020. Ranking as League
One’s top scorer also saw him included in the EA Sports
FIFA 21 EFL Team of the Season. Two notorious games of
his from last season involved hat-tricks, with one coming
in just 67 minutes in a 7-0 win against Accrington Stanley,
Brother of Celtic’s Karamoko Dembélé in the Scottish
pursue Peterborough. At only 24 years of age, the No.10
had a season to remember with 11 goals and 12 assists
in 42 games in 2020/21. He played 12 games at centre
forward, 13 at left wing and 13 in attacking midfield.
Highlighting his versatility on the pitch, it should come
as no surprise that Siriki will be aiming to establish
himself in the Championship. In addition to England and
Scotland, he is also eligible to play for the Ivory Coast.
One of his best games last season was the 5-1 thrashing
LAST FIVE
MANAGERS
THE BOSS
DARREN
FERGUSON
JANUARY 2019 – PRESENT
SCOTTISH
Peterborough United appointed
former manager Ferguson in
January 2019 after the sacking
of Steve Evans. The son of Sir
Alex has had two previous spells
as Posh manager, and originally
agreed a deal until the end of
his first season back in charge.
The vision of promotion to the
Championship was key for the
club and Ferguson to reach an
agreement. Since taking charge,
he has guided Peterborough
to a monumental second place
finish in League One last season,
meaning promotion to the
Championship with 87 points and
without the need for Play-Offs.
Ferguson has earned three
League One manager of the
month awards since arriving
in 2019, with his most recent
award in February 2021, pending
promotion. He will now look to
guide Peterborough to survival
in the Championship.
DAVE ROBERTSON // FEB 2015 TO SEP 2015 // ENGLISH
Dave Robertson became caretaker manager of the club
in February 2015, following Darren Ferguson’s previous
departure. He won his first three games in charge,
becoming only Peterborough’s second manager to
achieve such a feat. Robertson was quickly awarded the
managerial position in May 2015, signing a three-year
contract. After a disappointing start to the 2015/16 season,
with one win in the first six league games of the season,
Robertson was sacked in September 2015.
GRAHAM WESTLEY // SEP 2015 TO APR 2016 // ENGLISH
Former PNE boss Graham Westley was appointed manager
of the Posh in September 2015, after the dismissal of his
predecessor Dave Robertson earlier that same month.
Westley took Peterborough to a fourth round replay in the
FA Cup, where they fell short to West Bromwich Albion. He
also lifted his side into the Play-Off places in January 2016,
however, a poor run of form and a 2-0 defeat to Scunthorpe
United resulted in his sacking as of April 2016, with the Posh
down in 14th position in League One.
GRANT McCANN // MAY 2016 TO FEB 2018 // NORTHERN IRISH
Grant McCann was appointed in May 2016 and was awarded
a four-year contract with the club. He took Peterborough
to 11th in League One during his first full season as
manager but won the August 2017 League One manager of
the month award, with Posh sitting at the top of the league
table. In January 2018, McCann’s men beat Aston Villa 3-1 at
Villa Park in the FA Cup third round. He was soon dismissed
a month later, though, when league results showed no
guarantee of a Play-Off spot.
STEVE EVANS // FEB 2018 TO JAN 2019 // SCOTTISH
Glasgow-born Evans became Posh manager in February
2018, less than 24 hours after he resigned from his
job at Mansfield. He took charge for 52 matches with
Peterborough, winning 21 and losing 16. When he managed
to win just three of his last 13 League One matches, the club
decided to dismiss him and his assistant Paul Raynor. This
left Peterborough United in sixth place, within two points of
seventh-placed Doncaster at the time in January 2019.
The Lilywhites head coach
needs some of the players
going for longer.
One PNE player who needs
more action is Alan Browne,
the skipper having played his
first 45 minutes of pre-season
in last Saturday’s 1-1 draw with
Accrington Stanley.
Browne has revealed he
had keyhole surgery on a hip
injury at the end of last season
and his rehab meant he was
only able to start training
towards the end of the squad’s
time in Scotland.
With that first bit of action
under his belt, the midfielder
will now be looking to give his
match fitness a boost.
Tonight’s game (7pm) could
pit three Preston players
against their former club.
Ched Evans started his
career at City, while City paid
£6.2m to land Scott Sinclair
from Swansea nine years ago.
Greg Cunningham’s first
taste of English football was
with City, the Irish left-back
playing four times for them
after being a trainee.
The games this week will
come too early for Matthew
Olosunde as he recovers from
an Achilles tendon knock.
PRESTON NORTH END’S
TOP FLIGHT DECADE
By Ian Rigby
1951 to 1961
HISTORICAL
JOE
WALTON
Born: Manchester, 5th June 1925
Died: Preston, 31st December 2006
Signed from: Manchester United, March 1948
Transferred to: Accrington Stanley, February 1961
Joe Walton, a Mancunian born and bred,
was a Manchester United war-time signing,
putting pen to paper in 1942 at the age of 18.
Despite playing 100 war-time games for United,
he only managed 21 league appearances after
the war so he decided to move to Deepdale from
Old Trafford when North End came calling in
1948. The £12,000 fee was a very high price to
pay for a full back in the 1940s, but he became
a very well-respected defender and captain of
PNE. Initially partnering Bill Scott, he eventually
formed a formidable back line of defence with
Willie Cunningham for over a decade. He showed
loyalty to the club in 1950 when, as captain, he was
dropped from the team as the Lilywhites went on
to win the second division championship in some
style. He was wanted by first division side Grimsby
Town, but he refused to go, preferring instead to
fight for his place back. After missing 60 games,
he regained his place and, as one can see from
the accompanying statistics grid, Joe became a
very consistent performer for Preston North End.
However, with the club looking relegation in the
eye in 1961, Joe was transferred to Accrington
Stanley having been superceded by John O’Neill as
the team’s left back.
THE ONE AND ONLY
Born In Preston,
Played For North End
by Mike Payne
46
During Preston North End’s 141-year history, over 100 first team players have been born here in
Preston, and in this series of articles I would like to feature a selection of those that went on to play
for the club. I have decided to choose them at random, as I want to reach across the various eras,
to highlight the different social and sporting periods in which they played the game. They all had one
thing in common, though, and it was that they were so proud to represent their hometown team.
PROUD PLAYERS
FOR PROUD PRESTON
In the late 19th century, Preston North End were
the name in football and they had some wonderful
players in their ranks. One Prestonian who made a big
impact from humble beginnings was Billy Greer. He
was learning his trade in North End’s reserves in his
earliest days at Deepdale and the club kept a firm eye
on this talented player.
In the end, suitably impressed by some friendly
appearances for the team, they gave him a
professional contract in April 1892. There was only one
league game left of that season, but he was included in
the home match with Darwen as North End were hit by
injuries. He did well at outside right, and even scored
on debut in the 4-0 win, after earlier having a headed
goal ruled out for offside.
In the following season, he won a place in the team
and played in all the league matches bar one, with PNE
finishing runners-up to Sunderland. He also helped
North End reach the FA Cup semi-final, only beaten by
Everton after two replays. Also that season he helped
the club win the Lancashire County Cup. He began as
a winger, but the club used him as a defensive wing
half or inside forward in most of his time at Deepdale,
forging great partnerships with Moses Sanders and
James Sharp. Another of his claims to fame was that
he appeared in the 18-0 thrashing of Reading in the
famous FA Cup match. He eventually moved to Wigan
County and then Darwen. He was a fine player who did
well for his hometown team.

HISTORICAL
There are quite a few goalkeepers who qualify for
these articles and one such player was Jim Knowles
who was born on 31st July 1934. He came to Deepdale
when he was signed from local club Lea Town, turning
professional in October 1957. For a while he played for
the reserves in the Central League and it was difficult
for him to oust regular first choice keeper, Fred Else.
However, his chance came just before Christmas that
year, when North End played Nottingham Forest at
Deepdale and Else was out injured. It must have been
daunting for the 23-year-old to step straight into the
first division, but he acquitted himself very well in a
2-0 win. Local celebrated scribe Walter Pilkington was
full of praise for the way he handled himself. He said:
“I liked his confidence and clean handling, also his
composure when harassed.”
Else was still injured for the next game too, on
Christmas Eve at Hillsborough against Sheffield
Wednesday, and what a game that turned out to be!
Knowles had the strange experience of seeing Finney
score two goals at each end. Knowles did well again,
but ironically that was to be his last experience of the
first team as Else recovered from injury to see out
the second half of the season. In the summer of 1958,
Knowles was transferred to Barrow and he later
played for Lancaster at non-league level. He sadly
passed away at a nursing home in Derbyshire recently,
just before his 87th birthday, and everybody’s thoughts
at Preston North End are with his family.
One of the most popular players among the Deepdale
faithful completes today’s trio of Prestonians. The early
1980s were not the best of times to be a North End
fan, but one player did stand out for the club, Andy
McAteer. His full back play was one of the few good
features of a dismal period in North End’s history, as
was his consistency. He rarely had a bad game after
coming through the ranks at Deepdale.
He originally signed as an associated schoolboy before
the club took him on as an apprentice professional in
1977. His progress in the youth teams impressed the
management and on Boxing Day in 1979, at home to
Shrewsbury, he was given his first team debut in a 3-0
victory. Andy once said: “I wasn’t even in the squad for
that Shrewsbury game. In fact, I was at home when
the phone rang and it was the club telling me to come
in and bring your boots! It was a dream come true for
me to make my debut for my hometown club at just
18-years-old.”
After that he became an integral part of the first team
squad. His best season was probably 1982/83, when
he scored six goals, finishing third behind Steve Elliott
and Alex Bruce in the goalscoring chart – not bad for
a full back. The one sad aspect about Andy’s career
from a football historian’s point of view was that he
finished his Deepdale career on 299 appearances in
league and cup. One more and he would have made the
‘26 Club’. Any chance of bringing him on as a late sub
this season, Frankie? After all, he is still only 60. Oh,
and by the way, I haven’t mentioned that he signed for
Blackpool in December 1986, but then he saw the light
and came back to Deepdale in 1988 for another season
before retiring. And I never mentioned his hair either...
THE TURN OF THE 21ST CENTURY, THIS
HISTORICAL
Eddie Nolan
Defender Eddie Nolan first joined the Lilywhites in October 2008, initially signing on loan
from Lancashire neighbours Blackburn Rovers before boss Alan Irvine then made that
move permanent in the January window. The versatile defender, often used at left back
despite favouring his other foot, went on to play a regular part as PNE pushed for a
Play-Off place and got there in the most dramatic of circumstances on the final day
against Queens Park Rangers. Nolan played 90 minutes in both legs against Sheffield
United, which unfortunately ended in defeat, but the young defender was impressing
and made his debut for the Republic of Ireland later that month. After then playing 19
times in the first half of the Championship term, Nolan fell out of favour and went out
on loan to reunite with Irvine at Sheffield Wednesday, before leaving altogether for
Scunthorpe United in 2011.
Callum Robinson
While PNE fans may remember Callum Robinson better for wearing the No.37 shirt
and later the No.7, giving North End their very own CR7, it was this number which a
fresh-faced Robbo first wore for the Lilywhites. The forward, then on loan from Aston
Villa, was quickly a part of Simon Grayson’s plans and a hat-trick away at Havant
& Waterlooville in the FA Cup did nothing to spoil his chances of staying in the first
team. Mainly used as a winger providing for the lethal strike force of Joe Garner and
Jermaine Beckford in the 2014/15 promotion-winning season, Robbo was a regular
starter throughout his first stay, but he was unfortunately not available for the
Wembley Play-Off final win against Swindon Town as he returned to his parent club. He
would of course come back to Deepdale though, but that’s for a later edition…
Alex Baptiste
Signing on the same day as Aiden McGeady in August 2016, defender Alex Baptiste
joined PNE on a season-long loan from Middlesbrough. He slotted straight into Simon
Grayson’s defence, being used at both centre half and right back, and he was effective
at the other end of the pitch too during his year with the Lilywhites. He scored three
goals in the space of five games between the end of September and October, one of
which came in an away victory to promotion-pushing Norwich City. Baptiste suffered
a knee injury, though, in January which kept him sidelined until April, and he made his
final appearance for the club on the final day of the season away at Wolves.
THE ONE AND ONLY
Fans
Up first is Sepp van den Berg…
Before each matchday this season, we’ll be posting on our social media channels to give supporters
the chance to send in questions for members of the PNE squad, so keep an eye out for future editions!
@CRITCHPNE DO
YOU FEEL LIKE PLAYING
FOR PNE HAS HELPED
IMPROVE YOU AS A
PLAYER?
It has improved me a lot as a player.
Playing senior football is way better
than U23s to be honest, it’s quicker,
more mature and harder. Last season
was really good for me, I already feel
like I’ve developed compared to where
I was before, so hopefully I can do the
same this year.
50
@NATHBREEN HAVE YOU
GOT ANY PRE-MATCH
SUPERSTITIONS?
Yeah… I always eat the same before
a game, I always eat pasta and then a
banana about an hour before kick-off.
I always put my left sock on first, then
my right one, my left shinpad first
and then my right one, same with my
boots. I don’t know how it started! I
reckon I did it once, played a fantastic
game and then after that just kept
doing the same thing.
@PNEBURNS IF YOU
WEREN’T A FOOTBALL
PLAYER, WHAT DO YOU
THINK YOU WOULD BE?
I would 100 per cent still be at school
at the moment. I like economics so
I’d probably say something with
that, maybe my own sports-related
company because I love sport.

FAN FEATURE
@MAXUUUUUUU DOES
PINEAPPLE GO ON PIZZA?
No!
@FUTNOXXY WAS IT AN
EASY DECISION TO COME
BACK?
I knew they wanted me back at the
end of last season and I had some time
to think about it and of course there
were some other clubs interested
as well. But as soon as it got more
concrete, I made my choice and it was
an easy decision.
@VALLIHAKEEM WHO IS
THE BEST PLAYER YOU’VE
FACED?
I played against Robin van Persie, he
was quite a good player! I was only
16, that was my first game as well in
the starting XI. I played against Mesut
Ozil against Arsenal, Frankie de Jong
and Matthijs de Ligt, so those four
stick out.
@BILLY.45167 WHO IS
YOUR FOOTBALLING IDOL?
Growing up I really liked Messi and
Ronaldinho to be fair. When I was
younger I used to play right wing so
I was more of an attacker anyway
so I will say they were the two
players. To be fair, my room when I
was younger was full of posters of
any footballer!
@JMASSEY2005
PROUDEST MOMENT IN
YOUR CAREER?
Just playing for Liverpool in a full
Anfield to be honest. Playing against
Arsenal was good. Of course winning
the Club World Cup and Premier
League too, but personally playing in a
sold-out Anfield was the best moment
so far.
@JACKO_JEFF BEST
MOMENT IN A PNE SHIRT
SO FAR?
It’s a hard one because the Hull game
was special seeing the fans for the
first time in the stadium, but we lost
that game. It was special for me
though to be able to play in front of
them. I really enjoyed making my debut
as well.
@CONPNE03 WHAT’S
THE MAIN GOAL YOU HAVE
SET YOURSELF FOR THIS
SEASON?
Just playing as much as I can. I want
to play all the games but I know that’s
not always possible, but just as many
as I can.
@CALLUMV._13 WHAT
CLUB DID YOU SUPPORT
GROWING UP?
Barcelona when I was younger.
Especially in Holland, Barcelona and
Real Madrid are two of the biggest
clubs out there, so I supported Barca
when I was younger.
Giving Football Back to
Small Business
At eBay, we know small business and
football clubs used to be like chips and
gravy, two peas in a pod – a match
made in community heaven.
Ironmongers, ship workers, spring
makers and cobblers, all formed clubs
which decades later are still prospering.
But nowadays, you’d think it was all
eyewatering transfers, Super Leagues
and mega sponsors, detached from the
humble origins of our historic clubs.
That’s why eBay are proud to support
300,000 small businesses who help
power EFL clubs nationwide. We’ll be
donating our advertising space to a lot
of these businesses – on match day
hoardings, around grounds and beyond –
throughout the coming season, to ensure
they can continue to thrive in our local
communities. So, join us in giving your
support to Small Business Power, because
today, they need us more than ever.
GAME
This season, members of our first team squad will
be picking out specific games they have played in
which are particularly memorable to them or even
helped to change the course of their career.
21ST MAY 2017 // OLD TRAFFORD
MANCHESTER UNITED 2
(HARROP, 15; POGBA, 19)
CRYSTAL PALACE 0
-
AS IT HAPPENED:
Jose Mourinho handed Josh Harrop his Manchester United senior
debut and the midfielder was celebrating in front of the Old Trafford
crowd after scoring just ten minutes into the game.
Next up is Josh Harrop, who has chosen his first
game in senior football.
“Obviously my debut at Manchester United was one
of my favourite moments so far. It was just a great
day all round, I scored and got man of the match.
It couldn’t have gone any better. That was probably
my top moment.
“I found out around two days before that I was
going to be involved, I didn’t tell anyone! I didn’t tell
my family, I just mentioned that I might be involved.
I didn’t want to tell them that I was starting though.
They were buzzing.
“It was unreal to score, it’s what dreams are made
of when you’re young going through the Academy.
It was an absolute dream.
“My second favourite game came at PNE, away
at Leeds in the cup. Brandon Barker scored an
absolute worldy and we went down to ten men.
It became a battle, I think I ended up playing
defensive midfield! Just the way we won that
game, the intensity we played at throughout the
whole game was unreal.”
THE ONE AND ONLY
ACADEMY REVIEW
SATURDAY 14TH AUGUST // SPRINGFIELDS
PP
PNE U19s 3
(SLATER 56, 80; HOLLAND-WILKINSON, 89)
SALFORD CITY U19s 5
(PEDRO, 30, 60; DACKERS, 52, 89; FINLEY, 74)
Preston North End U19s were beaten 5-3 in an eight-goal
thriller at Springfields as they kicked-off the 2021/22 season
against Salford City last Saturday.
The opening stages were extremely well contested, with both
teams looking to attack at every opportunity, but neither
getting a strong foothold on the game.
It was the visitors with the first real opportunity, a
devastating break down the right lead by Finn Bartram
resulted in what looked like it would be a tap in for Marcus
Dackers, but he just couldn’t get the ball out of his feet.
The hosts then had the best chance of the game in the
opening minutes when Jacob Holland-Wilkinson found his
way in on goal, but attempted a first-time effort which
trickled wide.
It was the visitors who took the lead on the half hour mark
though, a defence splitting ball saw Djavan Pedro through on
goal and he was able to slot it past Lombard into the bottom
right-hand corner.
The Lilywhites started the better of the two teams after
half-time, but the Ammies doubled their lead when a well
taken corner from Alfie Henderson found the lively Dackers,
who rose highest in the box and headed it in the right-hand
corner.
North End replied almost instantly through great work from
Josh Seary to get down the right-hand side before his cross
found Jacob Slater at the back post to tap home.
Before the home side could gain some momentum Salford
restored their two-goal cushion. The ball was fizzed into the
box and turned into the net by both the North End defender
and Salford striker as they both lunged for it.
Wilson added a fourth for the visitors, but again Slater gave
North End the hope of a lifeline as he fired home his second
of the match after good work from Holland-Wilkinson to set
him up.
The visitors sealed the win though with a fifth goal late on
before Holland-Wilkinson got on the score sheet to finish
the scoring thanks to a deflection wrong-footing the Salford
goalkeeper.
Speaking after the game, Academy manager Nick Harrison
was left disappointed by the result, but felt there were
positives to take from the opening game of the campaign.
“We’re really disappointed with the result, conceding five
goals,” he said. “In terms of the positives, we scored three
goals, I thought we created a number of chances with some
really good play and really if you’re scoring three goals you
would expect to win the game.
“We conceded five goals and at this level you’re going to
lose the game so yeah really disappointed in terms of the
goals we conceded, but really pleased with the chances we
created on the goals that we scored.”
PNE U19 line-up: Lombard, Seary (Mahaffy, 85), Lewis, Taylor
FORWARDS LOOK
FOR RESPONSE
North End’s youngsters are looking for an immediate reaction after the opening
weekend of the Youth Alliance North West Conference.
Jacob Slater with a brace and
a deflected strike from Jacob
Holland-Wilkinson gave North
End three goals, but that wasn’t
enough to take anything as Salford City
took a 5-3 win.
Speaking after the game, Slater said:
“We created chances, we put a few
away, but the defending is what let us
down in the end.
“We’ve been working on it all week
[defending] so it’s even more
frustrating.
“We need to improve the defensive
side. I think we’re good enough
attacking, we create and score goals,
but it’s just clean sheets that win
you games.”
Slater scored two of the three goals
for North End and was a constant
threat down the left-hand side. The
19-year-old was happy to get off the
mark for the season and hopes there
will be more to come.
“It’s a good start to the season for me
to score two goals, but it could have
been more and I’m just going to keep
working to improve,” he added.
The league has become an U19 division
this season and that meant the likes of
goalkeeper Ollie Lombard and Holland-
Wilkinson, who signed professional
contracts in the summer, were able to
get important game time.
And the latter was in agreement with
his first-year team-mate, saying
the squad must tighten up over the
coming weeks.
“We scored three goals which is hard
to do but at the end of the day we
conceded five,” said the No.27.
“So that’s what we need to now work
on, focus on that [during] these next
coming weeks and try and concede
less goals in the coming games.
“We scored three goals which is good,
but we conceded more, so that’s
something we want to put right in the
next game.”
The 18-year-old scored the third goal
of the game and picked up an assist
against the Greater Manchester outfit
to set up Slater’s second goal and
talked about adding different aspects
to his game.
“Definitely good to get off the mark,
glad to get an assist as well which is
something that I’m trying to add to
my game as a No.9,” he added.
WE SCORED
THREE GOALS WHICH
IS GOOD, BUT WE
CONCEDED MORE, SO
THAT’S SOMETHING
WE WANT TO PUT
RIGHT IN THE NEXT
GAME.
THE ONE AND ONLY
FEATURED PROGRAMME:
GIVE UP LOVING POP
Preston North End is one of three Lancashire football clubs to have teamed up with Lancashire
County Council, Healthy Stadia and Food Active to help children cut back on sugary drinks over
the summer.
Building on the success of the first Give Up Loving
Pop programme, delivered in 2018, the Premier
League Primary Stars team at Preston North End
Community and Education Trust will encourage
primary school children to ‘Give Up Loving Pop’
and to drink more water and low-fat milk.
The programme has combined educational lessons,
which includes an egg experiment where children
analyse the effects submerging an egg into
different drinks has over a number of weeks, with
opportunities to take part in physical activity.
The Primary Stars programme engages children
through cross-curricular learning in their PE
lessons while inspiring them through the power and
appeal of Preston North End and football as a whole.
Schools Provision Coordinator Jack Mountain
said: “It’s vital that we are educating children of
the impact of excess sugar consumption through
sugary drinks - using an array of sporting examples
through classroom-based and physical activity
sessions. We hope to educate not only the children
but parents, too.
“This is the second time we have supported the Give
Up Loving Pop programme in Lancashire and we’re
confident that together we can help to tackle the
interlinked issues of children being overweight,
suffering from obesity and having poor oral health.”
Queens Drive Primary School teacher Amanda Till
added: “The GULP programme has been fantastic for
the children. Having a visitor in is wonderful in these
circumstances as well.
“Olivia [PNECET Schools Provision Officer] has been
in and she has told the children through the visual
PowerPoint about sugar.
“She’s asked so many questions, the children have
learnt so much in drinks that have different types of
sugar, the effects of sugar and their effects on the
teeth and body. The children learned about different
types of drinks and their sugar content; they have
learnt so much.”
Queens Drive pupil Elizabeth added: “We’ve poured
some water, fresh orange juice and cola into some
cups and then put eggs in to see what would happen
over time – the eggs would be the teeth for the
children.
“We had to see how sugary the drinks were and
what would happen to your teeth and if it would
be bad for you or not. We left it for a week and we
smelt it and it [the cola] was horrible, so horrible!
“I’ve enjoyed doing experiments because it’s kind
of like being active inside, having fun, whereas in
our normal lessons, we don’t really do as many
experiments in our lessons as with PNE.”
THE ONE AND ONLY
LEARNERS CELEBRATE
PROGRESSION WITH AWARDS
PRESENTATION AT DEEPDALE
Preston’s Centre of Sporting Excellence learners celebrated their completion of the 2020/21
academic year with an end-of-season presentation at Deepdale.
Thirteen young people won awards
for their achievements both in the
classroom and on the pitch with the
Centre of Sporting Excellence in the past
year.
Preston North End Community and
Education Trust and Preston College
together offer Diploma in Sport
qualifications – at levels one, two and
three – as part of the Centre of Sporting
Excellence partnership.
Learners have the opportunity to gain
valuable knowledge in multiple sporting
disciplines, access unique work placement
opportunities from both organisations,
and represent the Centre of Sporting
Excellence in national football leagues
as part of studying a Diploma in Sport
qualification.
Michael Broadbent was the winner of the
Overall Academic Learner of the Year and
was awarded a signed 2021/22 Preston
North End home shirt in recognition of
his efforts, while there were also awards
voted for by manager and players for each
of the four football teams.
There was also recognition for learners of
the year at levels one and two, as well as
awards for two level three learners of the
year – in years one and two, respectively.
Preston’s Centre of Sporting Excellence
Curriculum Leader Jodi Collum said:
“We believe it is important to bring
our learners together at the end of
each academic year to celebrate their
successes and achievements in all aspects
of their course.
“It has again been another challenging
year for our learners but we have been
delighted by how they have continued to
engage with their studies through various
lockdowns and changing restrictions in
society while still supporting one another
as well.
“Our tutors are always challenged to
select just a few winners of these awards
at the end of each year, but it’s fantastic to
be able to celebrate those high achievers
while also recognising the hard work of all
of our learners throughout the year.
“We wish those moving on from Preston’s
Centre of Sporting Excellence every
success in their future career, in the
knowledge that they are well-prepared for
their next steps, while looking forward to
seeing the progression of other existing
learners, alongside plenty more young
people who will be enrolling with us from
September.”
The Centre of Sporting Excellence has seen
more than 100 learners complete their
studies in the 2020/21 academic year, with
around half of those now progressing to
the next level of their Diploma in Sport
qualification.
PNEWFC JUNIOR TEAMS
EXCITED FOR NEW SEASON
Junior teams of all age groups at Preston North End Women’s Football Club are excitedly preparing for
what will hopefully prove to be a first full season since the 2018/19 campaign.
The Coronavirus pandemic prematurely halted the
2019/20 season, while last term was shortened, and then
delayed into the summer for many teams, including those
part of the women’s junior set-up.
But after a return to training ten days ago, the girls
representing Preston North End at junior level are raring
to go for what will hopefully prove to be the first full one
under the renewed partnership between Preston North End
Ladies Football Club and Preston North End Women’s Junior
Football Club.
Stuart Freeman, manager of the PNEWFC U12s side who play
nine-a-side in the mixed Poulton-le-Fylde league, explained
that his team have remained in good spirits despite a
challenging couple of years.
“The girls’ enthusiasm has stayed with them throughout and
we haven’t lost anybody,” he told The One And Only. “It was
a good experience for the girls and I think they’ve come out
stronger for it; in previous seasons, they’ve played in some
of the old girls leagues and the quality wasn’t quite there, it
wasn’t a challenge for them.
“Last season, we won some, lost some and drew a few
as well. Every game, we came out of it and the opposition
manager and referees have been really complimentary of
the girls and the way they play. We use all of the pitch and
are very expansive.”
Meanwhile, U15s manager Steve Mitchell is keen to see his
team enjoy their football again.
He said: “The girls are really looking forward to – all being
well – a good season ahead of them. We only had eight
games last year and the year before we came third in the
league, the West Lancashire League.
“We have 14 girls this year and a couple of more will maybe
come on. Seven or eight have come right the way through
from U10s, making it their fifth season.
“I’m more focused on the fun, involvement and enjoyment
for my team. Everyone wants to win games, don’t get
me wrong, but I don’t take myself too seriously, and that
transcends to the girls.
“There’s nothing better than seeing a group of players
having a smile on their faces, enjoying training and playing
football.
“They really enjoy it and there are some real characters
who have grown over the last five or six years.
“It’s a local catchment area, we have a couple of girls who
are PNE fans, and they are so proud to put the shirt on. I’m
personally proud to wear the shirt and I pass that on to the
girls, which is nice.”
With all teams now training on the same evening each week,
at UCLan Sports Arena, Stuart of the U12s added that there
are further benefits to be gained this term.
“We now all train at UCLan Sports Arena, we all train on the
same evening, and the girls can see the older age groups
and what they can aspire to become, what teams they can
play for as they get older.
“I’d never met the other managers, apart from one, before
coming back to UCLan. Now we can have a chat and discuss
things, and cover other people’s training sessions.
“Kadie Morrison, my assistant, is an ex-PNEWFC player and
came through the junior ranks, and she has done some
other coaching experience. That’s good as well because
having a female coach, the girls can see what they can
aspire to become.”
The Trust were delighted to see fans back at Deepdale for
Hull City’s visit a fortnight ago, and with it the return of
community activities on matchday.
For our first game of the season, this included inflatables
located close-by to the new fan zone, with children trying
their luck at a football target challenge with the chance to
win prizes.
Preston’s Centre of Sporting Excellence learners – the
Trust’s post-16 education programme in partnership with
Preston College – had the chance to support those taking
part by working on the provision on the day.
Meanwhile, the Deepdale Duck also returned to Deepdale
for the first time since last March.
WALK AND TALK FOR
LILYWHITES SESSION
LAUNCHING
Preston North End Community and Education Trust has launched a new walking group for men and
women of all ages; Walk And Talk For Lilywhites.
Walk And Talk For Lilywhites runs from 10.30am every
Thursday, with participants combining the benefits of
face-to-face social interaction and physical exercise,
walking around Moor Park for the last three weeks
alongside like-minded people and PNECET staff.
There is no limit on participant numbers for the PNECET Walk
and Talk For Lilywhites group, however, those wishing to take
part must complete an online registration form at pne.com/
walkandtalkwithpnecet ahead of their first session.
The group is running in partnership with Walk & Talk 4 Men,
a men’s mental health support group that meets a couple
of times a month to allow people to chat in a safe space
without judgement.
The new PNECET Walk And Talk For Lilywhites group is for
both men and women, of all ages, while the Walk & Talk 4
Men groups, running separately to PNECET’s own provision,
remains for men only.
Upon launch, PNECET Health and Wellbeing Officer Hannah
White said: “We’re pleased to be partnering with Walk &
Talk 4 Men to extend our mental wellbeing provision with the
launch of Walk And Talk For Lilywhites.
“Walk And Talk For Lilywhites will provide new and existing
PNECET participants, both men and women, with the
opportunity to meet and enjoy face-to-face conversation
while reaping the physical benefits from walking around
Moor Park, a fantastic setting across from our proud
Deepdale home.
“The opportunity for participants to meet in person is so
important after the last 18 months and we can’t wait to get
the programme started.”
Robert Flood of Walk & Walk For Men added: “During these
times, it’s even more important to bring people together
to talk.
“With Walk And Talk, we can do this in a neutral
environment, shoulder-to-shoulder, and talk and walk. It’s
been so important to help my own mental health struggles,
and I hope it helps others.”
The first Walk And Talk For Lilywhites session will run
on Thursday 29th July and you can sign-up to join the
programme by clicking here. Alternatively, for more
THREE of
the BEST
This season, we want supporters to
share with us their favourite three things
about being a PNE fan, whether that be
a favourite goal, kit, player, match or
memory. It’s up to you!
All you need to do to take part is email
media@pne.com with the subject ‘Three Of The
Best’ and include the following information.
Sixty to 90 words about each of your three picks,
explaining why you have chosen them, and also
attach a high-resolution photo of yourself, as well
as your date of birth.
Joe Barker, 12
1. BARKY’S DERBY DAY SCREAMER
The favourite goal I have ever seen live was the winning goal by
Tom Barkhuizen to make it 3-2 against our rivals Blackburn in my
first ever local derby. I loved this goal because I seriously wanted
PNE to win and we were on level terms at 2-2 after being two goals
down. As the ball got passed to Barkhuizen by Alan Browne I was
shouting ‘shoot!’ hoping he would, and when the ball came to him he
positioned himself and then finessed it right in to the top corner. The
stadium went wild; it was awesome.
2. MEETING GALLY
One of my favourite memories of being a PNE fan was when I went
to my first match against Brentford with the Junior Whites. We
were sitting in the Sir Tom Finney Stand and while I was there I got
my picture taken with one of the most iconic players in PNE history
– Paul Gallagher and also his son. During my many times going to
matches with Junior Whites I made lots of friends and had some
great experiences.
3. ON THE PITCH
Another of my favourite PNE memories is going with my primary
school, Grimsargh St Michael’s, to take part in a penalty shootout on
the Deepdale pitch. I was pumped for it and when it was my turn to
take one I was aiming for the top corner, or just anywhere really! I
struck it sweetly and it hit the angle of the post and the crossbar, it
was so close! It was an honour to be picked by my school to take part
in this amazing event. I really love PNE and can’t wait to get back in
the stands.
