Reputation or Character, Which One Is More Important?By Deb PaulPersonally, I feel character is more important than reputation.Your character shows what and who you really are.Meanwhile your reputation is merely what others think,believe, or say you are.Sometime we fall into the trap of thinking that your successis your reputation. I believe, ones character is way moreimportant in defining your success than your reputation willever be.Character defines whom you truly are, regardless of whereyou are in life. Your reputation on the other hand, is nothingmore than what people think you are. If you have good characteryour reputation will take care of itself. In the end yourreputation will become a product of your character organically.If you have a good strong character and consistent honorablebehavior it will mean that even insulting remarks willbecome meaningless because nobody will believe it. To havea good reputation isn’t everything, I know plenty of peoplewho have a stellar reputation and yet they have no character.The opposite is true as well, there are plenty of people whohave a bad reputation but have an exceptional character.Character is controlled entirely by you, it is who you areand cannot be taken away from you by anyone. On the otherhand people can steal your reputation from you. When focusingsolely on reputation there is weakness. Reputation issomething that you have little to no control over.Being more worried about your reputation means you careHigh Noon (1952)★★★★• • •more about the public’s view of you instead of integrity, whoyou are.It can take a lifetime to build reputation, but it can becomedestroyed and striped away in an instant. Once your reputationis lost it can be difficult to regain.On the other hand, character is forever. Your true characteris shown when no one is looking. Being true to yourself iswhen you find your character being tested, by living up toyour responsibilities, and understanding the consequences’ ofyour actions. Doing things because they’re the right things todo and not because it makes you look good or you benefitfrom it. Don’t let others set your standards, be true to yourself.Character is like your word, it is all you have and it defineswho you are and who you will become.I believe that character is more important than reputation,don’t take it the wrong way; I also believe that having a goodreputation is also a necessity, it’s just not as important.Most of the time people may not really know who we areso they base their judgment merely on others perception. Thisway of evaluating and judging other can’t be avoided, that’swhy some people spend most of their time building up a goodreputation, creating a false image of who they truly are.Having a good reputation may be a wonderful way to opendoors, but only with good character will you be able to keepthe doors open; phonies and con artists are soon found out andthen usually ushered out.To quote Joan Jett “I don’t give a damn ‘bout my reputation”.Employee Misclassification Task Force Invites Public Comment• • •The Employee Misclassification Task Force will hold twopublic hearings on the topic of employee misclassification onThursday, August 26, 2021 and Friday, August 27, 2021 from11a.m.-1p.m. (both days). Any member of the public is welcometo attend. The Task Force invites testimony from laborand/or employees on the 26th and employer testimony on the27th. However, anyone may participate on either or both days,and the Task Force will hear from anyone on either day ifscheduling conflicts so require. The Task Force will strive tobe as flexible as possible.Hearings will be online (and recorded) and interested partiesshould email Task Force Chair Chris Curtis, Chief of theAttorney General’s Public Protection Division (christopher.curtis@vermont.gov) to request a Microsoft Teams meetinginvitation. A physical location for those who require a reasonableaccommodation will also be provided.The purpose of the hearings is to listen to stakeholders andany interested members of the public on the topic of employeemisclassification generally.
