On Sunday October 28, we gathered in
the Community room to answer this
question. We spent time speed-dating
with the Bible, compiling the “Top Ten
Reasons God Needs A Church”, and we
“built” God’s dream for the church.
Together, we tapped into our creativity,
THE SCROLL
our collective resources, and listened
for what God is saying to us.
Throughout the rest of this newsletter
you will find some of what we came up
with. There are reflections from
children, models of the church of
future, and reasons for our existence.

Why does God need a church?
We are blessed to worship a God who
is always up to something, and we thank
God for the people who came, the
inspiration they shared, and the
direction that gives us as we move
ahead into a new day at St. James. How

St. James Seniors please mark your calendars!
On December 8, 2012 at 12 noon will be our annual
Christmas Luncheon. We will have Music and Santa
will come by again for a wonderful and fun gift
exchange. Please bring a small gift item in the amount of
$5.00 or less if you want to participate in the exchange.
You will receive more information in the near future. All
Seniors must have reached their 60th birthday this past
year. Please let the Church Office know if you turned 60
this year and would like to receive an invitation.
We hope to see you then.
St. James Knitting Group Sale of knitted items for the
holidays
On December 2, 2012 the Knitting Group will sell their
handmade gift items as a fundraiser to purchase yarn
for more projects for Women & Infant Hospital for the
coming year. It is a great opportunity to purchase
beautiful handmade knitted gifts for the coming
holidays. There are scarves, warm hats, washcloths,
items for pets etc. You will be able to see and
purchase the items after the contemporary and
traditional Church Service. Come early and have the
pick!

This year’s Mobile Loaves and
Fishes Fundraiser was a great
success!! Thank you to all who
contributed and attended. It
looked like everyone at the
event, held at the Johnson &
Wales Culinary Arts Museum,
enjoyed themselves. The
museum displays were fabulous,
Rt. Rev. Geralyn Wolf delivered
an amazing account of her time
living as a homeless person in
Providence, and the food was
delicious.
2012 MLF Fundraiser raises over $11,000!
Based on the initial results, this
year’s fundraiser profited
$11,184.81!!! That is amazing –
imagine all of the people we will
be able to serve. Our theme
this year was “Do One Thing”,
and by doing just one thing,
whether attending the event or
making a donation, look at how
many lives we will touch. Thank
you so much for your generous
support of this very important
mission.

Youth Ministry Fundraiser
Pasta Dinner
Sunday November 4 at noon
Join us following worship services on Sunday
November 4 for a pasta dinner that will support
youth activities at St. James.
We will gather in the Fellowship Hall-downstairs
below the Sanctuary. All are welcome!

Grace and peace in Christ!
Honorable, kind, dear Sir and Friend!
Since you ask whether my seal has come out
correctly, I shall answer most amiably and tell
you of those thoughts which now come to my
mind about my seal as a symbol of my
theology.
There is first to be a cross, black, and placed in
a heart, which should be of its natural color
(red), to put me in mind that faith in Christ
crucified saved us. For if one believes from the
heart, he will be justified. Even though it is a
black cross,
which mortifies and which also should hurt us,
yet it leaves the heart in its natural color and
does not ruin nature ... that is, the cross does
not kill, but keeps man alive. For the just shall
live by faith, by faith in the Savior.
Such a heart is to be in the midst of a white
rose, to symbolize that faith gives joy, comfort,
and peace. In a word, it places the believer into
a white joyful rose, for this faith does not give
peace and joy as the world gives. Therefore,
the rose is to be white, not red, for white is
the color of the spirits and of all angels.
This rose, moreover, is fixed in a sky-blue field,
symbolizing that such joy in the Spirit and in
faith is a beginning of the future heavenly joy. It
is already a part of faith, and is grasped through
hope, even though not yet manifest.
And around this field is a golden ring, to signify
that such bliss in heaven is endless, and more
precious than all joys and goods, just as gold is
the most valuable and precious metal.
May Christ, our dear Lord, be with your spirit
until the life to come. Amen.

Prayers for Voters
On Monday November 5-prior to election
day-the sanctuary at St James will be open
at two different times for anyone who
wants a quiet place to sit, pray, think, or
meditate before casting a vote. We pray
that God would guide our nation, our
voting, and the entire process, and that
those who are elected and the decisions
that are made would reflect God’s
presence.

The Columbarium was installed this
past month, stop by and take a look!
The Visitation Team at St. James
We formed the Visitation Team in 2009. The purpose is to
maintain social interaction between our Pastor and our
members. We love to visit in teams of two. We do not visit
to put pressure on you to contribute money or come to
Church if you are not able or do not wish to. We are
available to visit if you have health issues, are lonely or
need someone from Church to come by and fill you in on
all the activities that are happening at Church. We would
call first to make an appointment before we come out for a
visit with you. We do not expect coffee and there is no
need to fuss, just a friendly talk.
Sometimes things happen in life that may be difficult to
deal with. This may be a time when we could be of help.
St. James is a caring Church. We care deeply about you
and what is happening in your lives.
We are here if you need someone to talk to. Please

On Sunday Nov. 4 we will celebrate All Saints, a day set aside to remember all those saints of God who
have touched our lives and are no longer with us. This year, we are inviting you to make a living gift in
memory of a saint who was special to you-a grandmother, a friend, a spouse, a child, someone who loved
you in this life and now rests with God in the next. Think of a way to honor that person’s unique life,
and what it meant to you...a way that will help us to share God’s love with others.
Be creative! Maybe your saint loved to cook, so you will bring a grocery gift card or baking mix. If your
saint loved to sew, maybe an article of clothing. Was your saint a movie or sports lover? Bring a couple
of tickets to a game or movie. Were they a coffee drinker? If so, maybe a Dunkin’ Donuts gift card
would be a good offering. Bring something that someone else can use that reflects the life and love of your
saint!
What will we do with all of these things? We will gather them, and the pastor-working with members of
St. James will identify people and places that can benefit from these offerings. Maybe the items of
clothing end up on the MLF truck, the baking mixes and gift cards go to TAP-IN, the gift cards and
tickets go to Gloria Dei-providing a night out for people who normally can’t afford it. All of these things
will be used to spread the love of God that your loved ones shared in this life. Bring them to worship on
Sunday November 4 and we will celebrate together!
