Peter Brodey’s London Marathon

On Sunday 3rd October, I will

be running the London

Marathon in aid of iSight

Cornwall. This is a small,

Cornish charity that supports

and provides opportunities

for people in Cornwall living

with sight-loss and eye

disease. This charity does

amazing work for people

right across Cornwall and

makes a real, positive impact on everyday lives.

Although I don’t live in Delabole now, I was brought up on

a farm just outside, attended Delabole School and

Delabole Methodist Church and spent a lot of my childhood

in and around the village. I left Cornwall for university when

I was 18 and spent ten years living in North Wales before

moving back to Cornwall and have now lived in St Tudy

for the last few years. However, when people ask me

where I come from, I say that I always consider Delabole

to be my home and regularly come back to the village to

catch up with friends and village news. If anybody in

Delabole remembers me and would be kind enough to

sponsor me and support iSight Cornwall, I would be

extremely grateful. You can sponsor me directly by visiting

https://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/peterbrodey

Thank you for all of your support and you may see me

running through the village as I sometimes incorporate

Delabole into my training routes. If you do see me, feel

free to stop me and ask me how I’m getting on - I’ll

probably be happy for the rest! Peter Brodey

THE GOOD OLD DAYS

A long way down!

In the late 1950’s I lived “Down West” where we had an elderly lady neighbour. The lady had a daughter who married

a young, successful Canadian who had made his “fortune” breaking cars in Canada and selling the parts. Every year

the girl and her husband (David) would come over and stay with her mother. Each year David would say that they

wouldn’t be coming back for three years but every ‘fall’ they would be back on what had become the annual visit!

My friend, Hedley, and I had taken it upon ourselves to include David, for a bit of an escape for him from his family, when

going out on an exploratory trip anywhere in Cornwall on a Sunday afternoon. When David was with us the trips had

become “sightseeing tours” which we all enjoyed as aimless travel was not such a common pastime as it is now. I think

Hedley and I enjoyed it as much as David. At that time it was with a van or, if dry, on our motorbikes with David as pillion

passenger to either of us – no compulsory crash helmet wearing back then!

On one of these excursions we had, I think, been up in the Godrevy area and were making our way around the coast

when we came to “Hells Mouth”. We were hanging, quite precariously, over the edge watching the breakers pounding

on the rocks at the bottom of the cliff which in a hot, near gale force, wind made for quite an exhilarating experience.

There is no doubt that he was grateful for the time he got to spend with us. Often over quite a period he had said to us

that he would like us to go and visit him in Canada and that once we had landed there we would incur no expense at

all and that we were to be his guest for as long as we wanted to stay - why on earth didn’t we ever take him up on the

offer?!

David was never one to show great emotion although he obviously enjoyed life and life’s experiences. Later, when we

were moving on again, I said that he must have been impressed by what he had seen at Hells Mouth and I was sure

there was nowhere in Canada / U.S. that had anything quite like that. His response was not quite what I expected. “I tell

you what,” says David, “when you come over to see me back home, I’m going to take you down to see the Grand Canyon.

Believe me when I tell you that I’m going to keep you two on a tether while we’re looking over there because it’s so deep

that if you fall over the side you’ll not be killed when you hit the bottom – you’ll starve to death before you get there!”

Best Wishes to all and let’s hope we have a long, sunny, “fall” of our own this year. I.M.B.

Termyn Gwari Fleghes

(children’s playtime, in Cornish)

It’s September already! This year seems to be passing so quickly. A new

school year is starting and hopefully you will be able to return to a more

normal school routine this year.

As I am writing this, the swifts are still here but will be leaving for the plains

of Africa very soon, to spend our winter hunting insects over the herds of

zebra. Swallows and house martins are still here but will be leaving this

month because the flies they eat are dying as the weather gets cooler. By

the end of this month we could even have frosty nights and then you will

definitely not see very many insects. Larger insects like bees and butterflies

will hibernate, only coming out to feed if we have very sunny autumn/winter

days. The weather cools as autumn starts, then fruits and berries ripen and

leaves turn yellow, red, orange and brown.

The berries we notice the most are probably blackberries because we like

them as much as the animals and birds do! Only we would most likely rather

have blackberry and apple pie than raw blackberries.

There is a word search to do this month. There are 21 words to find all of

which have an autumn theme. Remember the words can be backwards and

diagonal as well as up, down and across! I’ve given a few to start you off:

blackberry, acorns, barley, apples, colours… When you’ve found all 21 there

are 11 letters left over. Ten of these letters spell out another thing you very

often find in the autumn. Also, can you find the mystery letter that’s left over?

It begins the season name.

Things You Find

When You’re Tidying Up!

Part 5

With too much time on my hands, I discovered the following

lurking in a box file labelled Old Delabole Records.

This time it’s a booklet called ‘Musings on the Opening of

the Railway to Delabole, October 1893’ by J. Brown,

Millfloor, Tintagel. There are 30 verses - here are a few:

Come, greet the jocund day with cheers,

The day we’ve longed to see for years,

When we could take a ride

O’er the bleak moor and verdant plain,

So snugly seated in the train

With lov’d ones by our side.

The builders say our slate is strong,

There’s but one fault it lasts too long

And seldom known to break,

When once laid on no more repair,

And if you search the roof with care,

You cannot find a leak.

Our street lamps brilliantly do shine,

In unity we all combine,

So little we complain,

We live in peace, are well agreed,

Been often said that we have need,

Of nothing but the train. HH

WELL DONE TOM!

Please join the Slate team in giving a round of

applause for local 15 yr old teenager Tom Pickard.

Last month he was presented with a certificate of

appreciation by the Chief Fire Officer, Cornwall Fire

and Rescue Service, Kathryn Billing. This is awarded

to someone who has demonstrated outstanding

performance of their service code ethics.

The certificate reads;

Tom Pickard, a Fire and Rescue Service Cadet

has been awarded the Chief Fire Officer

certificate of appreciation for responding to

support a road traffic collision in his home area

of Delabole. Tom located himself at a local

crossroad and directed traffic to ensure crews

were kept safe whilst they dealt with the incident.

Tom acted with professionalism, selflessness

and bravery. You are a credit to yourself, your

Saltash (Fire Cadet) team, your local community

and our Fire and Rescue Service and as your

Chief Fire Officer I am proud of you.

Also worthy of a mention is that Tom has been chosen to

represent Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service in November

at the Remembrance Day parade at the Cenotaph in

London.

What an honour!

September Garden with Bessie Greenfingers

September signals the end of summer and the beginning

of autumn. The leaves start to turn lovely shades of gold,

orange, red and brown. Time to start putting the garden

to bed for the winter.

This is a good time to tidy borders. Pull out large weeds

and hoe between plants to get rid of baby weeds. Cut

perennials that have finished flowering.

I like to plant new bulbs for a really good show of flowers

next spring. Make sure the bulbs are planted twice the

depth that they are high. For example a one inch tall bulb

should be under, at least, two inches of soil.

Trim all your hedges for the last time until next spring.

Delabole Quilters

have been meeting and stitching for

many years before Covid.

Now we plan to start again on Friday

September 24th 2021.

We meet every other Friday 2-4pm in the Methodist

Sunday School. New members welcome - whether you

are new to patchwork and quilting, or very experienced,

or you want to learn new skills to create beautiful things.

We are a very friendly group, sharing ideas, fabrics and

a good cup of tea and chats.

For more information phone Pauline 01840212577.

Cut the lawn with the mower on it’s highest setting and

aerate by pricking all over with a garden fork. Give the

lawn a good raking to remove moss and debris.

Harvest any vegetables and fruit still to be picked. Green

tomatoes and damaged fruit can be made into jam or

chutney. Shallots and small onions are good pickled. You

will find recipes in any cookery book or on line.

Open up your compost bin and set aside the top layers.

Use the well rotted lower layers to mulch your beds and

borders. Put the set aside top layers back in the compost

bin.

On days when it’s warm enough, sit in a sheltered spot

and admire the results of your work in the garden.

Delabole School

Before starting this contribution to the Slate, I read through the August entry for 2020, partly for inspiration and partly to

try to reconnect with where we were a year ago in terms of adapting to meet the demands of Covid 19 whilst still holding

fast to our core business of teaching and learning.

As always, even a year ago before any vaccines had been rolled out, we were optimistic for our September start and

were looking forward to welcoming families and staff back to a full school reopening. Protocols were in place and we

were planning a programme of ‘recovery’ that would aim to bring the children back to learning in its widest sense.

Bound up in our aspirations for the coming year was a plea to our community of families to uphold good attendance so

that the children could be given the best chance of making up for lost learning time and to keep as safe and well as

possible. You did not let us down – the school has secured its best attendance in recent years at over 96%. But little

did we all know then that there would be much greater challenges ahead and a real test of our commitment to sustaining

provision through the most challenging of circumstances. What a year it has been!

And now, we find ourselves in exactly the same position. Staff genuinely relish the return to school in September. There

is always a sense of ‘writing on a clean page’, a feeling of optimism and fresh possibilities. More than ever, we are so

looking forward to our Autumn Term Value of ‘Belonging’ and the Enquiry that will start with the statement ‘Home Is

Where The Heart Is.’ This will be a whole school History and Geography Enquiry focusing on our village of Delabole,

its heritage, its unique sense of community and its potential for the future. We have planned for the children to be out

and about in the village; we want them to have plenty of opportunities to talk to family and gather stories, anecdotes and

memories from the past. We also welcome any contributions of photographs and memorabilia from local residents that

will help us to bring the learning to life. In short, we would like to use our learning for the Autumn term to bring the

community together and celebrate all that it means to be a part of Delabole, as well as giving the children a strong sense

of place.

We cannot possibly know what the future holds over the coming months – certainly, we have learned to be cautious, to

adapt and ‘carry on’ – but we do know that we will find a way to enrich the children’s experience and enable them to

share their learning with our village community. We hope that you will join us in this celebration of our home village.

Sue Cox and the Delabole team.

Council Corner from Delabole Parish Council

The Parish Council had another busy meeting in August discussing and making decisions which affect our community.

Please remember that members of the public are welcome to attend meetings which are held every second Tuesday of

each month. The location alternates between St. John’s Church and the Methodist Church. The next meeting of the

council is Tuesday 14th September at St. Johns Church.

Below is a brief update on a few points. The full agenda and minutes can be viewed at

www.delaboleparishcouncil.gov.uk

Vandalism - Unfortunately, on the evening/night of Monday 9th/Tuesday 10th August, the bus shelter,

toilet wall and charity clothes bin were decorated with graffiti, as in the photograph. We believe this to

be a ‘tag’ or graffiti name. If you have any information about this please contact the Clerk.

Fly Tipping - A second incident of fly tipping was left by the Litter Picking (Wombles) bin.

Both the incidents of graffiti and fly tipping have been reported, as had the abandoned vehicle left at

the junction of Pengelly and Penmead Road which has now been removed.

Dog Fouling - This sadly is still an issue. New signs have been placed around the village to remind

people of their legal obligation to pick up after their dog. Please be considerate and scoop the poop!

Finance, Strategy and Staffing Committee - The council voted to elect members to this committee to support the Clerk

with financial decisions and budget planning. All will attend the Finance course for Councillors training.

Training - The Clerk is to attend the Budgeting and Finance course in September and the Chair will attend Chairman

training in August.

Queen’s Jubilee Celebrations – The Councillors discussed plans to mark the Queen’s Jubilee Celebrations in 2022.

If you have any ideas on how this special occasion should be celebrated by our community we would love to hear from

you.

Skate Park – Representatives of the Skate Park Project attended the meeting to secure support from the new Council.

If you have any comments to make on the provision of a Skate Park in the King George V playing field please drop me

an email or pop along to one of our meetings.

Carnival Revel – Permission was granted for the Carnival Revel to take place on 22nd August in the King George V

Playing Field. Look out for posters advertising the day.

Neighbourhood/Local Plan – The council is considering whether to engage in a neighbourhood plan. If you are

interested in getting involved let us know.

Free Trees - a number of trees are still available from the Woodland Trust scheme. During September, these will be

available for anyone to help themselves (no limit to how many you can have) from the end of the drive at 30a Pengelly.

Contracts for Footpaths, Grass Cutting and Weed Spraying – The council have requested tenders for these three

contracts. If you or you know someone who could provide an excellent service to keep our village looking great please

get in touch.

A Methodist Minister’s View

As we move into the month of September the conversation in agricultural circles will include the topic of Harvesting with

all of its variety of comments and hopefully celebrating the season.

Recently I read an article about ploughing with horses. Apparently, there are now only three teams of Shire horses in

Cornwall which undertake some work for farmers as well as competing in ploughing matches and doing displays. Shire

horses are now so few in number that they are monitored by the Rare Breeds Trust.

I remember sharing conversations with a resident at Eirenikon in Tintagel some years ago who could recall using horses

on a farm and ploughing an acre a day. Of course, for many years now we have been in the tractor era and can only

marvel at the ‘advancements’ in technology in the agricultural industry.

However, it is salutary to remind ourselves that ‘advancements’ are raising other issues particularly that of the insect life

of many countries – our pollinators. Our newspapers and magazine are carrying articles about the need to develop wild

plant areas in the countryside, at the edges of fields and in our gardens to encourage the development of the insect life.

Without ‘pollinators’ there are no crops to harvest. I think that this is a reminder to us all not only to encourage wildlife

but that all ‘advancement’ is not necessarily good in the long term.

However, we have much to celebrate and be thankful for as we work with ‘creation’ and the creative processes which

bring about the advancement from which we benefit. The question is ‘how do we celebrate our gratitude’. The Harvest

Festival Celebrations in our Churches and neighbourhoods are the means of celebrating the Harvest and giving thanks

for it and have a long tradition. If you look in your Bible at Exodus 23 verses 16 and 17 there are references to celebrating

‘Harvest’ on two occasions each year coinciding with the Mediterranean grain harvest in May/early June – which coincides

with out Pentecost or Whit Sunday – and the fruit harvest in the autumn know as the ‘Festival of Shelters’ to the Jews.

How do you celebrate all that you benefit from? I can only encourage you to share in your local Harvest Festival

celebration to show your thanks our Creator God.

Every blessing,

Bryan Ede

Preparation is the Key

Having been to a service at Tintagel the previous Sunday,

we decided that we would follow their lead. They’d had

coffee after after the service so our plan was to do the

same at Delabole. Well - it was like planning a military

operation! Five of us met at the Methodist Sunday School

on the Saturday and washed all the china and cutlery in

the downstairs kitchen (who knew we had so much),

disinfected the shelves, drawers and tables then put

everything back neatly and arranged the tables at a safe

distance.

The plan was that after the service (taken by David

Rhodes), people would go into the Sunday School, sit at

the tables and then coffee and biscuits would be taken to

them. It worked! Everyone felt safe, it was as if things were

back to normal (ish) - and it had only taken 5 of us 5 hours

preparation (including coffee break) and tidying away.

In fact, we felt so OK about things that (unless

circumstances change) we’re going back to holding a

Macmillan Coffee Morning in September. You’ll remember

that last year Bethany Chapman turned up trumps and

produced those fabulous boxes of goodies that we could

order and have delivered to our door.

Spoke to Jo Bluett about this year and she thinks that

Saturday 25th would be a good day - from 10 until 12noon.

The thing is though that in the two years since our last

coffee extravaganza, things have changed and some old

faithfuls are no longer with us, so we’re asking younger

faithfuls to ‘bake it or fake it’ as they say in the adverts. If

you could (besides drinking coffee) provide goodies for

the cake stall and refreshments that’d be much

appreciated.

The plan is to ask people to enter via the Sunday School

(if able to), buy their goodies and drinks there and then

take them through to the chapel where tables and chairs

will be spaced out. So, see you there?

total of £715 was raised.

Thank you all who donated to this very worth cause.

Choughs

Wow! According to the RSPB’s Jenny

Parker, a record 66 choughlets have

hatched this year in Cornwall!

Tintagel Orpheus Male Voice Choir

At last! I am now able to bring you news about the choir.

We have now resumed rehearsals in Tintagel Methodist

Church (albeit at social distancing!). Unfortunately we

have been unable to bring you our season of Summer

Concerts in Tintagel, but a joint concert with Bude

Community Gospel Choir is planned for 1st October. At

the time of writing this, we are all waiting to see further

developments on August 19th, when maybe future events

can be planned. The long period of lock down has seen

the retirement of several of our members from all sections,

especially the Basses, where we have lost five voices. So,

the plea goes out, to anybody out there who feels they

would like to come along and sing with us. We practice on

Tuesday nights at 7.15pm in Tintagel. You can come

along, and just sit in and listen if you want to get the feel

of it, and see if you would like to join us. No auditions,

reading music not essential. Just a love of singing, and

being part of a friendly group of like minded men.

Some sad news. Alan Dawe, a much loved and extremely

talented musician, died a month ago, after a long period

of ill health. Alan served with two choirs, with us at TOMVC

for approximately ten years, as accompanist and stand-in

Musical Director until he retired four years ago. He was

also Choir Master and Organist at St Teath Church, again

for about ten years, where he carried on after his heart

attack, until his retirement from the church choir last May.

On Sunday, 8th August both choirs were able to perform

at a musical tribute to Alan, which was very much

appreciated by the audience, and singers, at St Teath

Church. Alan was a good friend to me over the years,

always happy to help me with my music, even helping me

to make my own CD for charity ( Guide Dogs for the Blind).

He will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him.

John Theobald. TOMVC Member. 01840 213558.

How to make your lavender bags

When your lavender has dried, rub the flowers off the

stems.

Choose any light cotton material. It doesn’t have to be

new. Good parts of worn clothing will be fine. Cut out two

three inch squares. Place the front sides together and

stitch around three sides securely. Turn the bag right side

out and put your dried lavender inside. Don’t fill too tightly,

just very loosely is fine. Turn the edges of the opening

inside and stitch the bag closed.

To decorate the lavender bags you could sew a small

bow on one corner or some lace around the edge. A pretty

button could be sewn on each side right through the

centre of the bag.

Put the lavender bags in your clothing drawers or

wardrobe. Put it under your pillow to help with relaxing

sleep.

They also make pretty small gifts to give your friends and

family.

If you fancy making lavender bags, but have no lavender,

you can buy packets of dried lavender at most garden

centres.
