you’Year 11 parent-COVID-19When school closures were announced in March 2020, we worked toensure that we would be able to continue to teach our students fromday one.We used Microsoft Teams to deliver live lessons, ensuring our students wereable to access immediate feedback and teacher input. We supplemented thiswith recorded lessons delivered by class teachers, alongside various otherplatforms such as Hegarty Maths, Show My Homework and Seneca Learning,and finished in 4th place out of over 7000 schools in the nationwide‘Champions’ League’run by Seneca.Our curriculum was supplemented by'The school hasexemplary pastoral care. Everymember of staff called home regularlybeen absolutelyto check on students' wellbeing, and wedelivered food and essentials to thosebrilliant duringfamilies in our community who neededlockdown – thankit most. As a school we raised of£15000, all of which went directly tosupport those members of ourcommunity who had the greatest need.Understanding the absolute importance of technology, we began to provideChromebooks for our students, and now provide a Chromebook and internetaccess to any child who requires it.Alongside everything that washappening to support pupils andtheir families at home, we ran our'Community Classroom' provisionevery day during the period of widerschool closures, ensuring that ourmost vulnerable students were fullysupported and that we could enablethe key workers in our community tokeep the country running.We are continuing to put the safetyand wellbeing of our pupils, familiesand staff at the centre of everythingwe are doing as a school.
Our Non-ExaminedCurriculumBeyond our academic“You need to know aboutcurriculum, we dedicate fivehours a week to learningbeyond formal, examinedthe news, because if we’recontent to ensure our studentsgoing to change theare well-rounded, informedand able to draw their ownworld, we need to knowconclusions about issues whichabout it!”affect us all.We look at the news daily and- Year 8 studentdebate in our tutor groups. Westudy the issues affecting young people in today's world, as well as lookingback through history to ensure we know about the important figures andstories which aren't studied in most schools. Our PSHCE curriculum goes wellbeyond the statutory requirements to ensure our young people are able todevelop into responsible, respectful and active citizens.Courageous advocacy forms a key part of ourtaught curriculum. Students have studied keylocal issues and used these to develop their owncampaigning ideas, such as writing to local MPsregarding the issue of homelessness, as well asbeing contributing positively to people’s lives suchas by writing to residents of care homes during theCOVID-19 pandemic.
