SUBARU OUTBACK Motoring Journalist Sue Cooke test drives the all-new smart and rugged Subaru Outback My work colleague is a back seat driver and enjoys telling me how to drive. He will irritatingly point out that the car in front has moved forward. This week, while driving alone in the new Subaru Outback I was shocked to see a message flash onto the screen and a piercing note inform me that the vehicle ahead had moved on. It is called Eyesight Driver Assist technology and is a standard feature with 11 new or improved safety functions for 2022. It would only take a moment’s glance away from the road ahead to be in an accident. But the technology on this sixth generation crossover ensures drivers have a second pair of eyes without a back seat driver. The technology offers the highest possible front crash prevent rating and has been found to reduce rear end crashes with injuries by up to 85%. Since its launch in 1995 the Outback has combined the station wagon crossover, passenger car and SUV which became the forerunner of a new car segment. As the flagship model for Subaru this popular everyday companion is the safest Outback ever built says Subaru, offering comfort, practicality, capability and it’s so good to drive. The exterior makes the Outback one of the more attractive crossovers on the road and is tougher and more rugged looking. When I was driving at night the LED headlights equipped with high beam assist really lit up the road ahead but with an adaptive driving beam which reduces glare. The quality interior has a choice of three trim levels, Limited, Field and Touring and the quiet cabin has more space. The windshield has moved forward and the front door windows have moved out. The total length has also extended and the wider boot opening creates a cavernous flat load area to accommodate up to 522 litres of cargo. I enjoyed the benefits of the first hands free power tailgate on a Subaru. With hands full I waved an elbow near the badge which automatically raised the tailgate. Marvellous. And there are no items rolling around in the boot as there are more hooks and net pockets so objects can be easily secured. I found it much easier to hoist myself into the driver’s seat as the side sill steps have been widened and now have a nonslip pattern. For tough off roading situations, the Outback has a newly evolved X-Mode technology with Hill Descent Control for reliability on steep, wet, or slippery terrain. Switch between snow/dirt mode to negotiate snow, dirt, or gravel, or snow/mud mode for soft conditions where lesser vehicles get stuck. The Outback is powered by a 2.5 litre Boxer petrol engine which has instant and fast acceleration.
