Nearly Every U.S. NursingHome and Assisted LivingCommunity Is Facing aWorkforce CrisisThe American Health Care Association and NationalCenter for Assisted Living (AHCA/NCAL), representingmore than 14,000 nursing homes and long term care facilitiesacross the country, released a survey of nursing home andassisted living providers across the U.S. Results from thesurvey highlight an urgent need for Congress to address thelabor shortage facing the long term care industry.Key findings include:• 86 percent of nursing homes and 77 percent of assisted livingproviders said their workforce situation has gotten worseover the last three months.• Nearly every nursing home (99 percent) and assisted livingfacility (96 percent) in the U.S. is facing a staffing shortage.59 percent of nursing homes and nearly one-third of assistedliving providers are experiencing a high level of staffingshortages.• More than 7 out of 10 nursing homes and assisted livingcommunities said a lack of qualified candidates and unemploymentbenefits have been the biggest obstacles in hiringnew staff.• Due to these shortages, nearly every nursing home andassisted living community is asking staff to work overtime orextra shifts. Nearly 70 percent of nursing homes are having tohire expensive agency staff. 58 percent of nursing homes arelimiting new admissions.• 78 percent of nursing homes and 71 percent of assisted livingfacilities are concerned workforce challenges might forcethem to close. More than one-third of nursing homes are veryconcerned about having to shut down their facility(ies).“The survey demonstrates the severe workforce challengeslong term care providers are facing due to the COVID-19pandemic. Too many facilities are struggling to hire and retainstaff that are needed to serve millions of vulnerable residents,”said Mark Parkinson, president and CEO of AHCA/NCAL.“Lawmakers across the country must prioritize long term careand that begins with providing resources to address workforcechallenges. When facilities have the means to offer competitivewages and training programs, workers will follow. Wehave laid out key proposals in our Care for Our Seniors Act,which will allow us to boost our workforce, but without thehelp from Congress and state legislators, this will not be possible.”Parkinson said the reconciliation package currently underconstruction is an appropriate vehicle for Congress to fund along term solution to addressing chronic staffing shortages innursing homes and other long term care facilities.“Congress has the opportunity right now, through budgetreconciliation, to include meaningful investments in long termcare, which will help address key staffing challenges. Ourcaregivers are the backbone of long term care, and theydeserve the full support of our lawmakers. As of Friday, October1, 2021, CVHHH will require all employees (clinicians,administrative, part-time, and per-diem staff, and volunteers)to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or submit to weeklytesting at its headquarters on Granger Road, Berlin. CVHHHstaff were made aware of this mandate at the end of August.In putting this mandate in place, CVHHH’s leadership teamconsidered several factors. First and foremost, CVHHH istaking all reasonable steps, as it has from the start of the pandemic,to protect the health and safety of its patients andemployees. The highly contagious Delta variant is causingspikes in COVID-19 cases statewide and in CVHHH’s servicearea, and vaccines are the most effective way to reduce thespread of the coronavirus. CVHHH has a responsibility as anemployer and community-based healthcare provider to takethis step. In addition, CVHHH wants to provide a consistentexperience across the care continuum to the many patients itshares with its healthcare partners, including Central VermontMedical Center and local medical group practices.
