Open Enrollment: Benefits to Opt-In for your HSA
For many, fall brings Open
Enrollment to work benefits.
The once-a-year opportunity to
make changes without needing a
life event.
Beyond insurance and retirement
benefits, these elections
help maximize your tax planning
for 2022. Yet, people spend more
time scrolling Instagram than reviewing
offered electives.
What are HSAs?
Health Savings Accounts or
HSAs are tax-exempt savings
plans paired with a high-deductible
health plan (HDHP) meeting
certain criteria (i.e. $2,800 family
deductible).
HSA is not “Use It or Lose
It” like FSA annual benefits and
upon leaving a company or retirement,
you maintain your
HSA.
How do you participate?
Only during an Open Enrollment
can you Opt-In to an
HSA by choosing a $ amount
to contribute. You can change $
amount throughout the year, but
not the ability to Opt-In.
Key HSA facts:
• In 2022, an individual can
contribute $3650 and a family
up to $7,300.
• If over 55, contribute an additional
$1,000.
• All contributions are tax-free
- federal, state, and FICA
(Social Security and Medicare).
• No federal taxes on HSA
funds spent on qualified
health care expenses.
• Excess HSA funds can be invested
for tax-free growth to
compound for years.
Thus, unlike any other tax-advantaged
savings plan, HSA can
offer “triple tax benefits”: taxfree
contributions, tax-free earnings,
and tax-free distributions.
Free money. Really.
Shockingly, over 50% of eligible
Americans decline to participate
in an HSA. Unbelievable
considering most employers put
$500-$1,500 each year into an
HSA. In theory, $1 per pay period
could return $500-$1500 per
year from your employer - take it!
Furthermore, “health rewards”
programs can earn
deposits into HSA by doing preventative
care activities. For example,
seen $400 deposited into
an HSA when each spouse had
an annual physical.
Get the tax savings.
Consider a family in 24% tax
bracket averaging $4,000 in outof-pocket
medical expenses. HSA
tax-free contributions would provide
them tax savings of $1,466
($960 federal 24% + $200 state
MA 5% + $306 FICA 7.65%).
Earners in 32% bracket can max
out 2022 contributions and gain
tax savings of $3,259.
Leverage tax-free growth
for retirement.
Gaining momentum is a financial
planning strategy of
avoiding withdrawals from HSAs
and pay medical expenses from
free cash flow. The allows for investment
(funds, ETFs, equities)
of HSA contributions to grow
tax-free for years before using in
retirement for eligible expenses
like Medicare premiums, vision,
dental, hearing aids, nursing services,
long-term care premiums,
and medical expenses.
Alert for the Retire Early
crowd, while HSAs cannot be
used to pay private health insurance
premiums, they can pay for
health care coverage purchased
through an employer-sponsored
plan under COBRA, which may
be a desired option leaving a
company and maintaining until
reaching Medicare eligibility.
Plaintiffs CRG Acquisition,
LLC and Jon Delli Priscoli have
filed a complaint to appeal the
Holliston Planning Board’s July
29, 2021, decision to deny the
plaintiffs’ proposed project at 555
Hopping Brook Park.
Defendants named in the
complaint are the Town of Holliston
plus the Holliston Planning
Board and its individual members
including Barbara Peatie
who joined the board in June and
did not act on the matter.
CRG is described as “the purchaser
under a purchase and sale
agreement of about 72 acres of
land” within the 350-acre industrial
park; and Jon Delli Priscoli
is listed as the “owner of the
site and seller purchase and sale
agreement…[acting] “as trustee
of the New Hopping Brook Realty
Trust.”
Plaintiffs claim the “approximately
800,000 square-foot
warehouse facility” is “allowed
by right” and that the town’s denial
is “unreasonable, arbitrary
and capricious, based on legally
untenable grounds, and exceeds
the Planning Board’s authority.”
The complaint says, “The
board’s deliberations make clear
that its decision to deny CRG’s
applications for a special permit
and approval of its amended site
plan was based overwhelmingly
- and improperly - on alleged
impacts the project may have
on the complaining residents of
Medway.”
It further states that the denial,
in part, “is based overwhelmingly
on the vociferous objections
to the project of residents of the
adjoining Town of Medway, and
alleged impacts of the project on
those Medway residents, which as
a matter of law is improper and in
excess of the Board’s authority.”
Plaintiffs are asking the court
to annul the Planning Board’s decision,
remand the matter back to
the Planning Board “for further
proceedings consistent with the
court’s decision and judgement,”
determine that the proposed
warehouse facility is allowed by
right and no special permit is required,
and award the plaintiffs’
their “reasonable attorneys’ fees,
costs, and interest.”
Background
In its July denial, the Planning
Board laid out a number of arguments
in its decision including
the following:
• Building dimensions too
large for the site
• “Massive earthmoving effort”
is required to build the
1291 by 620 square foot building
and its associated driveways and
parking areas
• Final project elevation would
be approximately 60 feet higher
than elevation of Hopping Brook
Road
• 24/7/365 non-stop noise
disturbance of various types “will
fundamentally change the quality
of life in the adjacent neighborhoods
in Medway as well as
South Street area residents in
Holliston” as well as area wildlife;
noise can also lead to sleep deprivation
as there is currently very
little noise in that area at night
Berm slope design inconsistency
and viability
Increased traffic impacts on
abutting neighbors, neighborhoods
along truck routes, pedestrians,
bicyclists, rail trail users,
etc.
• Limited ability by the town
to enforce compliance, due to
lack of manpower, noting noncompliance
is unavoidable
• Use of building unclear; applicant
said it would be a warehouse
Massachusetts as part of the JED
High School Program to improve
mental health and prevent suicide
among teens including Millis
High School, North Attleboro
High School and Attleboro High
School.
The three schools join Medway
High School which currently
participates in the program.
As students are getting back
to school and observing Suicide
Prevention Awareness Month
[in September], JED will begin
working with the schools to develop
long-term strategies surrounding
student mental health.
The program will also provide
schools with funding and resources
to strengthen their behavioral
health system and is
dedicated to helping schools evaluate
and build out their students’
mental health, substance misuse,
and suicide prevention programming
and systems.
As students are returning to
in-person schooling and are faced
with uncertainty amid the surging
Delta variant, research reports
that one in four youth
globally are experiencing clinically
elevated depression symptoms,
while one in five youth are
experiencing clinically elevated
anxiety symptoms. Mental health
programs supported and provided
by KyleCares and JED are
needed now more than ever.
“The power of The Jed Foundation
and KyleCares together
has made an immediate impression
on Millis High School,”
said Millis Public School Superintendent
Robert Mullaney.
“KyleCares has consistently and
effectively assisted Millis High
School as we address suicide prevention
and the mental health
and wellness of our students, and
we are excited to begin our work
with JED High School to help
us support our students as they
navigate the many social and
emotional challenges they face
every day.”
“KyleCares aims to connect
schools with valuable mental
health resources, facilitate conversation
around long-term strategies,
and fund mental health and
suicide prevention programs,”
said KyleCares President and
Co-founder Jim Johnson. “Our
partnership with JED allows us
to confidently lead every conversation
by first recommending
JED’s evidence-based approach
as a critical, impactful roadmap
for high schools to follow.”
“We are excited to partner
with KyleCares to help high
schools better support the mental
health of students in the Massachusetts
area as they return
to school,” said JED CEO John
MacPhee. “Having a local partner
on the ground like KyleCares
will allow us to protect more
youth in the Massachusetts and
Rhode Island area.”
The Little Gym Medway
Leah and Nigel Chan have
owned The Little Gym in Medway
since May 2021; they took
over after the previous owners
retired after opening the business
“Our daughter had taken
classes at another Little Gym
and we fell in love with the
franchise so when TLG Medway
was looking for new owners,
we jumped at the chance
to be a part of an amazing organization
and have our own
family business,” says Leah
Chan.
The Little Gym opened
its first location in Bellevue,
Washington, in 1976.
The Little Gym is a noncompetitive
gymnastics program
for kids 4 months to 12
years old that focuses on threedimensional
learning in three
areas: Get Moving (physical
growth), Brain Boost (cognitive
growth), and Citizen Kid
(emotional and social growth).
Classes are tailored to focus
on the developmental growth
for each age group. TLG also
offers non-competitive dance
classes and sports classes.
“We are all
about having
some ‘serious
fun’ learning
gymnastics in
a fun environment.
We have
a small but
mighty staff
with diverse
backgrounds
who have been
here for multiple
years,” says Chan. “Here
at TLG Medway we truly care
about all our families past,
present, and future. We foster
caring, strong relationships
with everyone here at the gym
Parent Child Classes • Pre-K Gymnastics • Grade School
Gymnastics • Dance • Sports Skills • Awesome Birthday Bashes
and it’s a great place to be.”
Two of the most popular
programs at TLG Medway
are the Parent/Child classes
and the Pre-K classes.
The Parent/Child classes
are 45 minutes and have some
structured aspects as well as
some exploratory aspects.
The Pre-K classes are more
structured, compared to Parent/Child,
but they still have
a “serious fun” factor, says
Chan highlighting the brand’s
catch phrase.
TLG Medway classes have
two-to-four-week learning
units which include an overarching
theme for each unit,
and can include letters and
language, numbers, and colors
depending on the age.
One of the most exciting
things of note is that birthday
parties are back although
they are a bit different with
COVID-19 restrictions.
Birthday parties are 90
minutes long with 60 minutes
in the gym and 30 minutes in
the multi-purpose room where
families can choose to offer
food and cake to their guests
or have it ready for them to
take home. TLG Medway
handles set up and clean up
for a group of 12 children plus
the birthday child.
“With Covid we are still
being very careful and asking
all adults to wear masks for the
whole party except when eating,”
says Chan. “And since
they are a private party, we
let the party families decide if
they want kids to wear a mask
or not.”
Another fun option at TLG
Medway is their private playdates
for families who want to
utilize only the gym portion.
Options are available for one
or two hours for up-to-6 or
up-to-10 children.
According to its website
https://www.thelittlegym.
com/medwayma, TLG Medway
“offers progressively
structured classes and a positive
learning environment to
create opportunities for your
child to try new things and
building self-confidence.”
They offer drop-in programs
and special events for children
ages four months to 12
years old who can enjoy fun
games, activities, and loads
of laughter. There are also
special complimentary events
for member families such as
parent/child programs that
encourage problem solving,
imagination, and socialization
skills.
Upcoming public events
include a Halloween party on
Oct. 22 -- details will be available
soon on TLG Medway’s
be hosting holiday camps during
the week of Dec. 27, 2021.
Medway Superintendent Armand Pires elected to
prestigious Suburban School Superintendents group
Members represent suburban school districts
from 20 states
Medway Public Schools and
the Medway School Committee
are pleased to announce that Superintendent
Armand Pires has
been nominated and elected as
a member of the national group
Suburban School Superintendents.
Suburban School Superintendents
aims to improve the quality
of educational opportunities, programs,
and services for children,
staff, and parents through meetings
and other communications
between members who share
best practices for implementation
in members’ districts.
The group was founded
more than 50 years ago and is
comprised of no more than 150
superintendents. Members are
nominated by other active member
superintendents. Nominees
are selected based on leadership
in educational research or program
development, which would
enable them to contribute significantly
to a national perspective
on suburban schools. The current
members represent suburban
school districts from 20 states.
Superintendent Pires has
implemented many important
plans, programs and initiatives
since becoming superintendent
in 2015. He was instrumental in
the creation of a five-year 2016-
2021 Strategic Plan for Medway
Public Schools and led the work
to define the district’s core values
and issue a revised strategic plan,
which serves as the current roadmap
for success.
He has also demonstrated extraordinary
fiscal management
of district resources and remains
committed to delivering a balanced
and transparent budget
that does not sacrifice programs
or services, even when faced with
unplanned budgetary challenges.
Superintendent Pires engages
regularly with stakeholders, including
community organizations,
municipal leaders and
bargaining units to deliver enhanced
experiences for all students,
including tuition-free full
day kindergarten and new accessible
playgrounds at both of
Medway’s elementary schools.
He also leverages relationships
with colleagues across the Commonwealth
to keep abreast of
key issues facing educators and
engage in creative problem solving.
Several innovative ideas have
been explored and implemented
in the district under Superintendent
Pires’ leadership, including
the hiring of a wellness director
and an early focus on social-emotional
learning and whole-child
wellness.
Notably during his time as
superintendent, Pires led the
district through the COVID-19
pandemic. This included a progressive
plan to get students safely
back to school for full in-person
learning, beginning with Pre-K-2
students in October 2020 and
grades 3-4 as early as December
2020. All students Pre-K-12 were
back in-person beginning on
April 12. Additionally, many innovative
safety precautions were
put into place including the use
of individual HEPA air filtration
units in all indoor spaces months
before they were a standard mitigation
strategy, and the implementation
of pooled testing for
staff and students before many
other districts in the Commonwealth.
Aside from his work leading
the district, Superintendent Pires
prioritizes teaching and learning
personally as well, regularly making
time to shadow teachers and
students and visit classrooms.
“The association selects its
members from the preeminent
suburban school districts across
the country, so for Dr. Pires to be
accepted into this organization
is a testament to the outstanding
work he has done to elevate
the profile of the Medway Public
Schools,” School Committee
Chair Susan Dietrich said. “His
colleagues have recognized what
we in Medway are fortunate to
know: that his demonstrated
commitment to principled leadership,
strategic thinking, and innovation
set him apart in his field
and make him an asset to any
professional organization.”
Dietrich added, “On a personal
note, I have had the privilege
of working closely with Dr.
Pires in my last four years on the
School Committee, and while I
could say many things about his
Committee Chair Susan Dietrich and School Committee member Tim
abilities and accomplishments, I
have always been most impressed
by his personal integrity and how
sincerely he cares for the wellbeing
of the students, faculty, and
staff. Medway is honored to have
Dr. Pires as our superintendent,
and we look forward to a bright
future with him at the helm.”
Superintendent Pires has also
served on the ACCEPT Collaborative
Board of Directors, The
Education Cooperative (TEC)
Board of Directors and is a member
of the Massachusetts Association
of School Superintendents
(MASS) Executive Committee.
He was nominated for Suburban
School Superintendents
membership by Medfield Public
Schools Superintendent Jeff
Marsden and Needham Public
Schools Superintendent Daniel
Gutekanst.
“The Suburban School Superintendents
provides an outstanding
platform for professional
development and connections
with other district leaders across
the country,” said Superintendent
Marsden. “I nominated Armand
because he is a trusted colleague
and outstanding leader and will
be a great fit for this organization.”
Added Superintendent
Gutekanst, “Armand is a trusted
school leader in Massachusetts
and a valued colleague who I
typically turn to for advice, fresh
ideas and to collaborate on issues
facing our schools. He is an
ideal Superintendent to become a
member of the Suburban School
Superintendents organization.”
The Medway School Committee
presented Superintendent
Pires with a certificate acknowledging
his nomination at its Sept.
9 meeting.
The b.LUXE beauty beat
By Gina Woelfel
Happy Fall, Y’all! I’ve busted
out my autumn wardrobe, enjoyed
my first PSL (pumpkin
spiced latte for you coffee purists)
and officially embraced my favorite
season - “sweata weatha.”
We hope you took some time
for yourself last month and enjoyed
our September specials.
It’s a crazy time of year when
the kids return to school and
you’re suddenly juggling a more
chaotic schedule. Self-care is
super important and that means
scheduling it out. Be it yoga, a
facial, a massage or your salon
visit, these appointments are
your “you time.” They give you
the chance to relax, regroup and
feel better. It’s hard to believe
that the end of this month is the
start of the holiday season! Yup,
you read that right. In less than
30 days, we’ll be knee-deep in
witches, turkeys and snowmen.
With all the holiday hoopla right
around the corner, that brings us
to this month’s beauty beat topic:
Scheduling.
We thought this would be
a good time to talk about what
it really means to work in the
service industry and more specifically,
the obstacles and frustration
that many face with a
commissioned-based career. To
work on commission means that
your salary is based on a percentage
of the business you generate.
For argument’s sake, let’s talk
about the beauty industry.
You know that wonderful
feeling you get when you visit
your salon, get your nails done,
or have a facial? I know, for me,
there’s nothing like taking that
beat from my schedule and doing
something exclusively for myself.
Our post-pandemic lives are
busier than we could have imagined.
With safety precautions in
place and tightly booked schedules,
appointment-based businesses
are working hard to ensure
that clients can readily book
services, feel safe during their
treatments and still provide the
highest level of customer care.
Employees who work on commission
are also still struggling
to find a balance with childcare
and expenses, with many having
to split their time apart as a family
to keep their children safe and
make ends meet.
This year at b.LUXE, we
moved towards a more strict enforcement
of our 24 hour cancellation
policy and fees, a move
that, perhaps, ruffled a few feathers.
Like many businesses,
b.LUXE keeps an active cancellation
list for our customers who
were unable to schedule their desired
appointment. If a booked
appointment is canceled with less
than 24 hours notice, re-booking
that time can be difficult. Not
only is this disappointing for our
waitlisted customers, it can be
devastating for your stylist who
depends on that service for their
LUXE b
hair • makeup • skincare • editorial
commissioned-based pay. When
you cancel, no show or run so
late that you can’t be seen, you
directly impact the lives of your
hairdresser. (You know, the one
who makes you look so amazing!)
We understand life is busy
and things can pop up. This chat
wasn’t for the client who’s had to
cancel once or twice. It was for
the serial canceler (and you all
know who you are!)
Stylists LOVE their clients
and every day, go above and beyond
to make them look and feel
beautiful.
Perhaps, as we head into
what’s sure to be a very busy season,
we can shift our perception
of our schedules and the people
we’ve tied to them. With three of
the most overscheduled months
ahead of us, book ahead! Set
some time aside for yourself to
relax and enjoy what makes you
happy and prioritize that time.
Let’s also give a face to each appointment
we make and respect
and adhere to the time we’ve
World-Class Eyecare and Cataract
Surgery Closer to Home
By Roger M. Kaldawy, M.D.
Milford Franklin Eye Center
Cataract surgery is by far
the most common surgery performed
in the United States.
With advanced technology and
if you choose an experienced
and highly skilled surgeon, modern
cataract surgery should be
a rather quick outpatient and a
minimal risk procedure. If you
are considering cataract surgery,
your expectations should not only
be to improve your vision, reduce
glare at night, see more vivid colors
and improve your day to day
activities, but you should also be
given an opportunity to reduce
your dependence on glasses or
contacts and in many cases eliminate
this need. Your expectations
should also be to have your
surgery by a world-class surgeon
close to where you live and not
be told to travel hours for testing
and surgery. Many choices exist
on where to have the surgery and
by whom. Here are the specific
questions to ask when it’s time to
have the surgery:
1. Why are you referring me
to this surgeon? Your optometrist
may ask you to travel miles and
hours away from home to have
your surgery with a particular
surgeon of their choice. When
you have experienced surgeons
within minutes from where you
live and when those top-notch
ethical surgeons with excellent
nationwide reputation will perform
your surgery in a state-ofthe-art
surgery center closer to
home. Ask your provider why
they want you to travel hours and
miles away. Unfortunately, if you
dig enough, you will find the only
reason for this remote referral is
financial and business-related interest
your provider has with the
far-away surgeon. Beware referral
bias. In our center, 100% of
the surgeries are performed in a
state-of-the-art facility in Milford.
Very close to home. Your interest
comes first.
2 .What is my cost? Did you
know that when your optometrist
refers you to a surgeon who will
perform your surgery at a hospital
your insurance deductible
and co-insurance will be higher
at a hospital? If this is happening
to you, we are available for a
second opinion! All our surgeries
are performed at an ambulatory
surgery center in Milford with
potential cost savings to you.
3. What type of anesthesia
am I going to get? With modern
cataract surgery, most surgeries
should be completed under topical
anesthesia. This means that
the surgery eye becomes numb
with drops. No need for injections
or shots around or behind
your eye. No shots will reduce
the risk of bleeding and serious
complications from the shots. Ask
about the techniques of the surgeon
you are being ask to travel
to see. In our center, 100% of
the surgeries are performed
under topical simple anesthesia.
4. What are the risks? One
of the most dreaded risks of
cataract surgery is accidental
damage to the posterior capsule,
which is the back wall of the bag
holding your lens. Ask about the
complication rate of the surgeon
you are being asked to travel to.
In our center this rate is close to
zero percent.
5. What is the rate of infections
in your center? Another
potentially devastating risk of
cataract surgery is an infection
inside the eye called “endophthalmitis”.
Ask the complication
rate of the surgeon you are
being asked to travel to. In our
center this rate is close to zero
percent.
6. What type of technology is
available at your surgery facility?
Different centers have different
equipment and resources. For
instance, Massachusetts has only
few centers offering laser-assisted
bladeless cataract surgery. This
should be an option if you want
to reduce dependence on glasses
and treat low grades of astigmatism
at the same time as your
cataract surgery. Our center was
among the first in the State and
New England to offer this technology.
Did you know that many
hospitals and other centers do
not offer laser bladeless cataract
surgery? We do!
7. What type of implant am
I going to get? Different lens
implants can be used during cataract
surgery with different materials,
quality and ability to reduce
your need for glasses. Ask your
referring provider about his/her
surgeon choice of implants. Our
center was the first in the greater
Boston area to offer the new diffractive
and extended-focus implants.
With those implants you
can see clearly at distance, close
and intermediate like your phone
and computer screen without the
need for glasses.
8. Will my need to wear
glasses be reduced? Cataract
surgery is a wonderful opportunity
to limit or eliminate your
need for glasses. As the surgeon
removes the cataract, there is
an opportunity to replace the
cloudy lens with a special hightech
implant able to achieve this
goal. Ask your referring provider
about his/her surgeon of choice
ability to achieve those goals.
Our center has many happy and
glasses free patients.
9. Will I have stitches? It is
ideal to eliminate the need for
stitches such as the surgery is a
no-stitch surgery. Placing a stitch
can be complicated by stitch
induced astigmatism, a foreign
body sensation and a broken and
irritating stitch. Ask your referring
provider if his/her surgeon
of choice is still using stitches.
100% of our cataract procedures
are stich-free.
10. What will be my vision on
day 1 after the surgery? One of
the measurements defining quality
of outcomes after cataract
surgery is the quality of vision on
day 1 after the surgery. Surgeons
should strive to make the vision
correct to as close to best as possible
on day 1. Ask your referring
provider about his/her surgeon
of choice ability to achieve this
outcome. Our center has many
patients with happy 20/20 vision
on day 1 after cataract surgery.
Cataract surgery is all about
better precision, more safety
and excellent outcomes. At Milford
Franklin Eye Center, Dr.
Kaldawy is proud to have been
the first surgeon in the area and
among the first in Massachusetts
to offer bladeless laser assisted
cataract surgery and the first surgeon
in the greater Boston area
to implant the PanOptix and
Vivity lens implants. We offer bladeless
laser cataract surgery. We
implant high quality premium
lenses only, with correction for
distance, near and everything in
between. Many cases of astigmatism
are no longer a problem.
Our percentage of posterior
capsule complications and infections
is one of the lowest in the
Nation. No more need to travel
hours for your cataract surgery!
We operate in a state-of-the-art
Nursing Home Negligence or a Vibrant Life Plan Community?
By Heather J. Culkeen Executive
Director: Project
Perseverance
Doctors, nurses, patients, and
their family members have all
types of unpleasant conversations,
according to Amy Sarah
Marshall of the University of
Virginia Medical Center magazine,
Healthy Balance. For example:
How to prepare for aging
and caring for an aging partner
or parent is one of those. For Lee
Willis and her husband Hal, the
conversation started this way:
their beloved doctor of 15 years
asked Lee, point-blank: “Are you
prepared for the possibility that
Hal may outlive you?”
At 94, Hal is ten years older
than Lee. A plane accident broke
multiple bones in his legs, and
arthritis had settled in. Walking
is hard for him. He does his own
laundry and washes the dishes,
but he doesn’t drive and often
uses a wheelchair.
Lee, on the other hand, just
bought herself a new kayak. A
nine-year cancer survivor, she
relieves pain with exercise, not
medicine. She swims three times
a week. When not caring for Hal,
she’s active, traveling, and socializing.
Still, the doctor had a point:
Be prepared.
FACING THE FACTS OF
AGING
Most people avoid the subject
of getting old. Death is as natural
as birth, but too many people
simply don’t want to think about
it until they are too ill to participate
in decision making, leaving
family members and their physicians
to make decisions that may
or may not be what they would
have wanted at the end of life.
We need to prepare better.
FINDING A PLACE TO AGE
Lee’s major purpose in preparing
for Hal’s aging and her
own was to find a location where
this could happen. Lee didn’t
simply conduct a Google search.
She went to a lot of nursing
homes. She compiled a list of inhome
care services and went to
each one.
But Lee wasn’t satisfied,
mainly because of shifting staff.
“You can never guarantee the
same people. The bottom-line
dictates staffing. This turnover
and the resulting lack in continuity
of care, is a problem.”
So, she looked at the option of
aging in place. She volunteered
at programs of all-inclusive care
for the Elderly, which offers 24/7
coverage for anyone qualified for
a nursing home. It seemed like
“this would probably be what we
choose to do,” she said.
But then Lee discovered The
Green House Project, a new
model for long-term care for elders.
In 2001, a doctor named
Bill Thomas was appalled at the
state of elder care. He saw it was
a hospital, not a home with people
just sitting in wheelchairs. So,
he introduced a lot of changes,
bringing in birds, dogs, cats, and
plants. But it still wasn’t enough.
So, he “super-trained” staff to
behave like family members, not
healthcare providers. He built
a new structure, with one central
room, the residents living in
rooms off in spokes. It became a
communal place, with a common
kitchen where people cook family
recipes and behave like relatives.
Lee found one in her state. “If
we both have to go somewhere,
this will be it!”
AGING GRACEFULLY:
HOW TO GET STARTED
NOW
The best advice Lee’s received
from her doctor: Exercise.
He told her that the biggest
factor that differentiates healthy
from unhealthy aging is exercise—folks
who remain sedentary
clearly become frailer more
rapidly than those who either
remain or become active in their
later years. Exercising on a regular
basis makes a huge difference
in how one ages.
Lee’s primary lessons for
younger people: Be proactive.
“It’s really hard when you’re 50
to think about being 80, but you
should.” She advises younger
people to:
• Take your health seriously—
eat well and exercise.
• Prepare with a reputable Estate
Planning Attorney who
cares about your health as
well as your assets.
• Be an advocate for yourself.
• Get political and advocate for
end-of-life care.
Heather J. Culkeen is Executive
Director of Project Perseverance. The
public charity is dedicated to supporting
rescue efforts, as well as assisting local,
early-stage nonprofit organizations. We
focus on protecting Families for Generations.
We have protected families, children,
boomers, seniors, and the elderly
for generations. We welcome opportunities
for growth and development.
In our experience most people prefer
aging on their own as they take steps
to improve and protect health, home,
spouse, family, and life savings enabling
them to stay in control. Take control of
your life! You will be glad you did.
Estate planning for you and your family.
An estate plan is not just for
high-net-worth individuals, it’s
for everyone who is single, has
a spouse, has a partner, has dependents,
owns a business, has
investments, has retirement
funds, owns property, or has material
possessions of value such
as a car. An estate plan may reduce
estate taxes and shield your
beneficiaries from having to go
through probate. It means your
last wishes will be heard. You
can name a guardian for any
young children and can even
direct how you wish a beloved
pet to be cared for after you are
gone. Having an estate plan can
also prevent a mess by bringing
clarity to your beneficiaries, and
it can protect assets from unforeseen
creditors. 1
The estate plan 2 may contain
a will or living trust, the
names of your beneficiaries,
the appointment of an executor,
a letter of intent that tells
a beneficiary or executor what
you wish to be done with specific
assets, funeral details, and
special requests. It should contain
a healthcare directive with a
power of attorney appointing a
trusted person to make medical
decisions for you when you can
no longer voice your opinion,
and a durable power of attorney
appointing a trusted friend
or relative to make financial and
legal decisions for you, if you
become incapacitated. It may
also contain a trust or trusts for
passing on assets to your beneficiaries.
Life insurance can be
an important component in the
overall estate plan.
You should update your estate
plan whenever a major
change occurs in your life, such
as purchasing a home, moving
in with a significant other, getting
married, having or adopting
a baby, selling your business,
getting a divorce, retiring, or
having a beneficiary die before
you do. Review your plan when
federal and state laws on estate
taxes change.
If you should die without
a will (which is called “intestate”),
3 the state and federal
governments will have standard
procedures for distributing your
assets, and they may not be in
line with your wishes. Your beneficiaries
may have to pay more
in estate taxes, and probate may
take considerably longer than it
would if you had a will in place.
Consult a professional financial
advisor on tax and estate
planning. Trusts can be complicated
to set up, so consult a
professional trusts and estates
attorney or certified public account
before you begin.
Medway’s Converse: A Classy, Team-first Player
Ex-QB Accepts Move to Receiver
By KEN HAMWEY
Staff Sports Writer
Sean Converse could easily be
the poster child for what a teamfirst
football player looks like.
The 17-year-old was Medway
High’s starting quarterback last
spring as a junior but now he’s
competing as a wide receiver.
That kind of change no doubt
would cause some players to
moan and groan, but the 6-foot-
1, 175-pounder not only was
open to the move, but was also
supportive of his replacement.
Converse’s immediate reaction
when he learned what head
coach Anthony Mazzola had in
mind was: “I’ll do whatever it
takes to help our team.’’
A confident competitor,
Converse guided Medway to
an early 3-0 record during the
Fall-2 grid season last spring but
the Mustangs lost their final two
outings, finishing 3-2 and ending
up in third place in the Tri
Valley League’s Small Division
standings. Converse’s effort in
Medway’s third win was dynamic
— he threw two touchdown
passes and rushed for two
other scores against Dedham.
“That contest was a big test,’’ he
recalled. “It was our first road encounter
and it was my best game
and top thrill.’’
So, why the switch?
“After the season ended, coach
Mazzola told me in June that he
and his staff felt the team needed
help at wide receiver,’’ Converse
said. “They liked my physical
Playing quarterback last season, Sean Converse led Medway
to a 3-2 record.
style and my ability to catch the
ball. They wanted me to team up
with Connor Kewley, a two-time
league all-star, to provide more
offensive firepower. And, coach
Mazzola felt that junior Luke Frauton
would be a capable successor
at QB.’’
Converse, now a senior captain,
displayed superb leadership
by telling Mazzola in a second
meeting that he’d like to compete
with Frauton for the QB job during
7-on-7 summer play.
“I felt that the competition
would help Luke to grow as a
player and help him develop as a
leader,’’ Converse offered. “Competing
against him could also help
his confidence. We both did well
in the 7-on-7 drills. Luke, however,
worked so hard, settled into
the role and earned the job.’’
“Sean’s willingness to switch
should help us by having two
weapons at wide receiver,’’ Mazzola
said. “He and Connor will
open up our running game for
Matt Childs. Bellingham won the
league title last spring with two
exceptional wideouts.’’
Mazzola also likes the attributes
that make Converse a
natural on the outside. “Sean
has great hands, he’s athletic
and has a high football IQ,’’ he
emphasized. “He’s also mentally
and physically tough, has speed
and quickness and he runs good
routes. He does the job at 100
mph and his leadership skills are
amazing. I go to him for things
that need fixing.’’
Converse is quick to laud both
Frauton and Kewley. “Luke is
an athlete, also playing hockey
and baseball,’’ Converse noted.
“He can throw deep accurately,
he can run, and is physical. And,
he’s working on improving as a
field general. Connor can jump,
has good hands and knows how
to run crisp routes. I’m excited to
team up with him.’’
A native of Medway, Converse’s
debut at receiver came
against Medfield in the Mustangs’
opener. He was targeted twice
and caught one pass for 22 yards.
The first-down reception set up a
touchdown two plays later when
Childs scored on a 35-yard run.
The Mustangs rolled to a 27-12
triumph.
“My goals for our team are to
win the small division title, qualify
for the playoffs and go as deep as
possible,’’ Converse said. “My
individual objectives aren’t to
compile statistics but I’d still like
to become a TVL all-star. That
would mean helping my team by
blocking or by excelling on defense
at cornerback. It’ll take lots
of hard work to be an all-star but
it’s Medway High’s success that’s
more important than my stats.’’
A good student, Converse is
leaning towards attending the
University of New Hampshire.
“I’m not sure what I’ll major in
and my chances of continuing
with football are slim,’’ he said.
Voted a captain when pre-season
practice concluded, Converse
was enthusiastic and honored.
He intends to lead in a variety
of ways. “I’ll lead by example, by
being supportive and being vocal
when needed,’’ he said. Mazzola
labels Converse as “positive’’ in
his leadership approach.
Converse’s athletic philosophy
is another area where he’s positive.
“I want to win, reach my potential
and enjoy competing,’’ he
said. “If we suffer a loss, it’s like
a fire in me. I want to return to
the field quickly and get things
turned around.’’
A power forward in basketball,
Converse is acutely aware
that sports teach valuable life lessons.
He’s learned some powerful
athletic tenets from both sports.
“I’ve learned to be competitive
and how to overcome adversity,’’
Converse stressed. “Athletics have
also taught me to be a leader and
a good teammate.’’
Sean Converse will be gaining yardage as a wide receiver this year.
4
One’s role models often reveal
why an individual is capable,
confident or successful. Converse
has five and they reveal volumes
about his character, work ethic
and perseverance. His role models
are his paternal grandmother
(Alana), his parents (Jeff and
Diane), his brother (Jeff), and former
Mustang quarterback Drew
Plunkett.
“My grandmother is 76 and
she has stage 4 cancer,’’ Converse
offered. “She’s opened my eyes
about how to handle adversity.
My parents are supportive and
encouraging, and my brother was
a great athlete at Medway and
he’s achieved high academic honors
at Merrimack College. Drew
taught me so much about playing
QB when I was his backup as a
freshman and sophomore. He’s
been very helpful and I still talk
to him.’’
Hoping that his senior season
will be more normal than
last spring’s campaign that involved
coping with a plethora of
COVID-19 restrictions, Converse
is prepared for whatever rules will
be imposed. He’s also ready to be
a two-way competitor. “Dealing
with COVID-19 was tough but
we adapted well,’’ he said. “To
play both ways requires being in
great shape, being physical and
being prepared.’’
The fifth in his family to play
football for Medway, he follows
his father, his brother and
two uncles (Jared and Steve). “I
dreamed about being Medway’s
quarterback as a kid, but now as
a wide receiver, I’m okay with
that,’’ Converse said. “I want to
be the best receiver I can be and
make an impact. I’d like to leave
a legacy as a great wideout who
was a team-first player.
Sean Converse is all about
“we,’’ not “me.’’
greatest opportunities?
• What are the greatest challenges?
More information on a
Master Plan
One of the statutory responsibilities
of a Massachusetts
municipal planning board is to
establish the community’s master
plan. In 1999 and again in
2009, the Planning and Economic
Development Board adopted
a master plan; those plans
were subsequently affirmed by
Town Meeting. The plans have
been used over the past 20 years
to guide the Town’s planning
and zoning initiatives.
Updating a local master plan
is an essential way to understand
forces that are shaping the built
and natural environment, to envision
a desired future for a community,
and to identify priorities
and develop specific strategies
for implementation.
The project begins with an
examination of existing conditions
to identify issues and opportunities
for seven primary
elements: 1) land use; 2) open
space and recreation;
3) natural
resources; 4)
housing; 5) economic
development;
6) cultural
and historical
resources; 7) municipal
services
and facilities;
and 8) transportation.
The Town
will also consider community
environmental and fiscal sustainability
and resilience in the
master plan. The Master Plan
will integrate and build upon
the Town’s recent planning work
to establish a meaningful vision
and develop strategies that are
realistic and fiscally responsible.
The process of developing
a master plan allows the community
to understand the forces
shaping the town’s built environment,
identify desired futures for
the community, and select effective
strategies to achieve the
community’s vision and goals.
To this end, the Planning and
Economic Development Board
has established a Master Plan
Committee (MPC). It includes
representatives of various Town
boards and committees, local
organizations, and citizens at
large. Committee members
have been appointed for a twoyear
term. To learn more about
this project, visit https://tinyurl.
STOW – State Fire Marshal
Peter J. Ostroskey and Deputy
State Fire Marshal Maribel
Fournier announced the graduation
of 42 firefighters from
the Massachusetts Firefighting
Academy today. Graduates
completed the 50-day Career
Recruit Firefighting Training
Program at two campuses: Class
#294 trained at the Stow campus
and Class #BW12 trained
at the Bridgewater campus.
“This rigorous professional
training provides our newest
firefighters with the basic skills
to perform their jobs effectively
and safely,” said State Fire Marshal
Ostroskey. The Massachusetts
Firefighting Academy
(MFA), a division of the Department
of Fire Services, offers this
program tuition-free.
Class #294 (Stow): 24 Graduates
from 17 Fire Departments
- The 24 firefighters of Class
#294 represent the fire departments
of Bedford, Chelmsford,
Fitchburg, Hopedale, Hopkinton,
Hudson, Lexington,
Lynnfield, Medfield, Medway,
Newton, Plymouth, Randolph,
Wayland, Westminster, Weston,
and Woburn.
This class included Taylor
Warren of the Medway Fire
Department.
Class #BW12 (Bridgewater):
18 Graduates from Eight Fire
Departments - The 18 firefighters
of Class #BW12 represent
the fire departments of Attleboro,
Eastham, Nahant, Salem,
Sandwich, Sharon, Stoughton,
and Yarmouth.
“First responders are on the
frontlines protecting their communities,
and these newest firefighters
are needed now more
than ever,” said Deputy State
Fire Marshal Maribel Fournier
who is serving as the MFA director.
“We have taken advantage
of technology, reduced
class size for social distancing,
implemented daily screening,
and required mask-wearing to
keep our instructors and students
as safe as possible.”
Training Safely During
Pandemic
In response to the pandemic,
the MFA reorganized
its 10-week curriculum to take
advantage of online learning
technology while ensuring
plenty of practical skill experience
on-campus with instructors.
Students utilized virtual
classroom learning and practical
training on campus, using
special safeguards and social
distancing, to maximize learning
opportunities while also reducing
group sizes.
www.charlesriverbank.com
Basic Firefighter Skills
Students receive classroom
training in all basic firefighter
skills. They practice first under
non-fire conditions and then
during controlled fire conditions.
To graduate, students
must demonstrate proficiency
in life safety, search and rescue,
ladder operations, water supply,
pump operation, and fire
attack. Fire attack operations
range from mailbox fires to
multiple-floor or multiple-room
structural fires. Upon successful
completion of the Recruit Program
all students have met the
national standards of National
Fire Protection Association
Professional Qualifications.
Today’s Firefighters Do
Far More than Fight Fires
Today’s firefighters do far
more than fight fires. They train
to respond to all types of hazards
and emergencies. They are
the first ones called to respond
to chemical and environmental
emergencies, ranging from the
suspected presence of carbon
monoxide, to Fentanyl overdoses
or a gas leak. They may
be called to rescue a child who
has fallen through the ice or
who has locked himself in a
bathroom. They rescue people
from stalled elevators and those
who are trapped in vehicle
crashes. They test and maintain
their equipment including selfcontained
breathing apparatus
(SCBA), hydrants, hoses, power
tools, and apparatus.
At the Massachusetts Firefighting
Academy, they learn all
these skills and more, including
the latest science of fire behavior
and suppression tactics, from
certified fire instructors. They
also receive training in public
fire education, hazardous material
incident mitigation, flammable
liquids, stress management,
and self-rescue techniques. The
intensive, 10-week program for
municipal firefighters involves
classroom instruction, physical
fitness training, firefighter skills
training, and live firefighting
practice.
Register O’Donnell Reports Steady Real Estate Activity in Norfolk County
Register of Deeds William P.
O’Donnell reported the Norfolk
County real estate market more
than held its own during the
month of August 2021. He also
reports a continued strong showing
in sales highlighted Norfolk
County real estate market activity
for the month of August.
Register O’Donnell stated,
“The Norfolk County real estate
market continues to be steady.
There were 16,282 documents
recorded at the Norfolk County
Registry of Deeds which is a 1%
increase over last year’s August
document volume. There were
1,999 deeds recorded out of this
document volume, representing
a 7% increase over August
of last year. Average sale price,
again including both residential
and commercial sales, increased
3% over 2020 to $903,842.69.”
Even though there was a considerable
increase to the monies
for mortgages the number of
mortgages recorded decreased
over the previous year’s numbers.
There were 3,665 mortgages recorded
during the month which
is an 11% decrease over 2020.
Total amount of money borrowed
for mortgages county wide
was well over 3 billon, a 62% increase
compared to August 2020.
“While some of the mortgages
are due to purchases and sales
of real estate, other mortgages
are due to refinancing existing
mortgages. Individuals have different
motivations to refinance.
Some refinance to reduce their
monthly payments, others to take
some years off their debt while
still others are using the money
to pay for home improvements
and other capital expenditures”
said Register O’Donnell.
Register O’Donnell went on
to state, “There has been a strong
demand for housing, single family
housing particular, coupled
with a limited supply of available
housing stock and historically
low interest rates which could be
motivating buyers to do what is
necessary to secure housing. The
growth in some real estate indicators
seen in 2020 continues into
2021.”
One continuing cause for concern,
however in Norfolk County,
was foreclosures. A moratorium
on foreclosures in place during
the pandemic in 2020 was lifted
on October 17, 2020. This moratorium
was in place due to the
COVID-19 pandemic. The Norfolk
County Registry of Deeds
has been closely watching the
foreclosure market. O’Donnell
stated, “During August of 2021
there were 6 foreclosure deeds
Agents of the Month!
recorded as a result of foreclosure
processes taking place in
Norfolk County. Additionally,
there were 15 Notices to Foreclosure
Mortgages, the first step in
the foreclosure process, recorded
here in Norfolk County. A foreclosure
recording is very impactful
on those being foreclosed
on. August of 2020 there were
no Notices to Foreclosure Mortgages
and 5 foreclosure Deeds.
“These numbers remind us that
some of our neighbors continue
to face financial challenges”, said
O’Donnell. “We will continue to
monitor these numbers.”
Additionally, for the past several
years, the Norfolk County
Registry of Deeds has partnered
with Quincy Community Action
Programs, 617-479-8181 x376,
and NeighborWorks Housing
Solutions, 508-587-0950 to help
anyone facing challenges paying
their mortgage. Another
option for homeowners is to
contact the Massachusetts Attorney
General’s Consumer
Advocacy and Response Division
(CARD) at 617-727-8400.
Register O’Donnell stated, “If
you are having difficulty paying
your monthly mortgage, please
consider contacting one of these
non-profit agencies for help and
guidance.”
Homestead recordings by
owners of homes and condominiums
decreased this year at
the Norfolk County Registry
of Deeds in August. There
was a 2% decrease in homestead
recordings in August 2021
compared to August 2020. “A
Homestead,” noted O’Donnell,
“provides limited protection
against the forced sale of an
individual’s primary residence
to satisfy unsecured debt up to
$500,000. It is great to see folks
protecting the biggest asset most
of us have, our homes. I would
urge anyone who has not availed
themselves of this important consumer
protection tool to consider
doing so. Please visit the Registry
website at www.norfolkdeeds.
org to get more information on
homestead protection.”
Register O’Donnell concluded,
“Available real estate
inventory continues to be a
constant source of concern in
Norfolk County. It’s especially
been a problem for first-time
homebuyers attempting to crack
the market. However, there is a
silver lining in the August real
estate statistics and that is based
on the optimistic lending numbers
that we’ve seen. These
figures are very encouraging
and tell us competitive interest
rates and a robust eastern Massachusetts
economy are having
a positive effect on the Norfolk
County region. The Registry
of Deeds was operational every
work day during the pandemic.
The Registry of Deeds continues
to be open to the public for
business, however that is being
evaluated as the COVID-19 developments
unfold. The dropoff
box located outside the main
entrance of the Registry Build-
