PLAtFoRM 2012
The Singapore Furniture Industries Council (SFIC), through its Design Entrepreneur Development Programme, is bringing back PLATFORM for its sixth
instalment in 2012!
PLATFORM is an avenue to help promising, young local and international furniture designers launch their new prototypes in the international market, kick-start
their design careers and form fruitful partnerships with leading manufacturers and buyers. It aspires to add to the design thrust by branding Singapore as
Asia’s furniture design hub.
APIRAT BOONRUANGThAwORN STUDIO (ThAILAND)
Apirat Boonruangthaworn is a
Bangkok-born designer who has
worked with many leading Thai
manufacturers and created a number
of designs ranging from small
decorative items to large furniture
pieces. He started up a design studio
"Ourstudio" in 2007 with his fellow
designers and established “Apirat
Boonruangthaworn Studio” in 2010
to create furniture under his own
philosophy. The furniture brand
"+SENSE" was found with the aim
of minimizing unnecessary details
and maximizing a human sense in
everyday objects.
Theme for Showcase:
“Design Intensified” is the search for something that can touch the human
feelings to create and intensify ‘the unity’ and ‘the relation’ between ‘forms’
and ‘production processes,’ which results in a different perspective on
everyday objects. The aim is to make ordinary objects into extraordinary
products, and to leave users with good impression through experimental, yet
simple creations.
SINGAPORE POLyTEChNIC (SINGAPORE)
The philosophy of
Singapore Polytechnic’s
Design School is "Power
of Design" to transform
lives by creating
experiences. Related
to the Greek notion of
"chora," which is "an
event in the making" –
the space between being
and non-being – the event of aliveness, we see design as ‘chora-graphy’
returning to its primal meaning, that which is more than just the act of
making things beautiful, but that which encompasses and orientates life.
Theme for Showcase:
‘Oikos’, being the Greek root of ‘ecology’, denotes ‘home’ or ‘dwelling’,
a poignant reminder that any discussion on ecology must begin at the
elementary, family level. Inter-generational values and mores that sustain
and enhance family and domestic experiences will eventually strengthen and
preserve society as a whole. Thus furniture pieces are carriers of pertinent
values that foster relationships existing between domestic participants.
TACTILE TEXTILES (SINGAPORE)
Tactile Textiles is founded by Karen Hong
who is currently an Assistant Professor with
NTU’s School of Art, Design and Media.
She has been working on one-offs textile
designs as well as commercial fashion
and accessories fabrics under the label
“TACTILE TEXTILES” since she graduated
from Masters of Textiles Design from
Central Saint Martins College of Arts and
Design in London.
Theme for Showcase:
Textiles have always had an ability to demarcate space, absorb sound
and create decorative elements, but today they combine the poetics of
art with the radical aesthetics of contemporary architecture. With these
characteristics, it is not difficult to explore the full potential of the heat set
fabrics done in the various decorative surface techniques. This range of
fabrics has further been developed into a commercial range, suitable to be
applied into our contemporary lifestyle as interior furnishings and products.
MACMASTER (UNITED KINGDOM)
Alex MacMaster launched
‘MacMaster’ in 2009
specialising in contemporary
wood based furniture and
lighting products. The
company, which is based
in London and operates
a production workshop in
Worcestershire (UK), is run
by award winning designers
Alex MacMaster and Limahl
Asmall who offer a growing
range of high end pieces that
purvey a sense of individuality
and quality.
Theme for Showcase:
Clean, sustainable timbers and a refined depth of aesthetic are the
contemporary trends emerging from the design centres of Europe and
London. MacMaster reflects on this and achieves a truly captivating and
creative aesthetic that is hand produced in England using the highest quality
FSC approved timbers and production methods that intend to minimize waste
and packaging.
