Although his maiden season was bookended by injuries, accomplished performances across 30 matches in central midfield alongside Scott Brown saw him become a fans’ favourite, and by January there was interest from the English Premier League. Following a 4-1 win over Dundee United on May Day, in which Beram scored a stunning longrange goal, Neil Lennon purred that his performance had been “world class.” The following season, in which Celtic won the first of nine consecutive league titles, he continued to blossom, until a serious ankle injury sustained against Rangers in December ended his campaign. It was a setback from which Kayal’s Celtic career never really recovered. While there were further highs, including monumental Champions League victories against Barcelona and Spartak Moscow, as well as a goal and brilliant man-of-the match performance in a win over Ajax, niggling injuries limited his time on the pitch.
