Dispersed CampingDispersed camping, also known as primitive camping, is a term usedfor camping anywhere outside of a campground on public lands.There are no hookups for an RV (electric, sewage, water), bathrooms,treated water, fire grates/grills, picnic tables, or trash cans, so beingself-contained is a must.Since the onset of COVID 19, dispersed camping is becoming more and morepopular. Unfortunately, with that popularity comes the refuse that often remainsafter humans leave the woods. The damage from this type of campingisn’t restricted to Drummond Island — public lands open to dispersed campingall over the country are being degraded. If we’re not careful, those chargedwith managing our public lands will be forced to make some tough choicesfor us when it comes to dispersed camping. We encourage you to follow thefollowing tips to help protect Drummond Island for future generations.Leave it better than you found it. Pack out everything you brought in, includingtrash. “LEAVE NO TRACE” Your campsite and the surrounding areas should not havean impact from you or other campers. Don’t cut or trim bushes or trees. Pack out alltrash, leftover food, and litter.Take care of your waste. Deposit solid human waste in cat holes 6-8 inches deepand at least 200 feet from water, campsites, and trails. Then cover and disguise the cathole when finished.Be alert of bears and other wildlife. Store food and other scented items in a bearcanister or outside of your vehicle overnight.Bring plenty of water (or have a way to treat it). Always treat the water you getfrom natural sources so that you don’t have to end your trip early!Know fire restrictions. Be aware of fire restrictions and warnings in the area youplan on camping before starting one.Know the Rules. When it comes to disperse camping, Michigan has it’s own set ofrules. It is important to review them thoroughly to avoid fines.
