SHIPWRECKED SAILORS.
Among the crew of the ship Astral
which arrived Monday from Norfolk
are two who were sailors on the
bark Prussia which was wrecked
near Staten Island nearly a year ago.
After their rescuo they were taken to
New York where they afterwards ship-
ped on the Astral. Th'p story of the
wreck of the Prussia was told some-
time ago in detail in these columas.
The two men are E. E. Ranney and
Herman Haena.

"The evening of that day I spent
at the home of Mr. Cyrus L. Sulz-
berger, one of New York's most prom-
inent citizens. Mr. Sulzberger is of
the opinion that Russian Jews of the
agricultural class can be recruited for
Hawaii in large numbers, and was
anxious to secure all the Information
possible about our islands' climatic
conditions, agricultural possibilities,
etc. I left a full line of our publica-
tions with him. Mr. Sulzberger, I
should have stated, Is at the head of
the movement to remove the Jews liv-
ings In squalor In the crowded parts
of YJew York city to other parts of
the country. About 40,000 have been
placed thus far, and the results have
been most satisfactory. It is not from
this class, however, that Mr. Sulzber-
ger would think of securing recruits
for Hawaii.
"My object in obtaining this infor-
mation was simply to secure data In
which I thought the members of the
Chamber of Commerce might be in-
terested, though the probabilities are
that our local Board of Immigration
is already fully informed as to what
I have said."

by Simon Roth as tailor ever since,
with the exception of a trip made to
Germany in 1SS6, where he was mar-
ried. He is survived' by his widow
and three children Hermann, aged
20; Emllie, aged 19; and Paul, aged 14.
