Acknowledgment
I would like to pay my respects and acknowledge the Bedegal people who are the
Custodians of Country, of Elders past, present and emerging on which this
exhibition takes place, and to the Dharawal people on whose lands I had the
privilege to grow up on and live now.
Aboriginal people have occupied the continent for over 65,000 years. Over the
thousands of generations First Nation people have inhabited the Sydney region
they formed family clans and these clans formed nations. Boundaries were often
geographic boundaries and the Georges River formed one such boundary.
To the north of the river were the people who spoke the Dharug language, among
them the Bedegal (Hurstville/Bankstown), to the south of the river were the
people who spoke the Dharawal language.
Spiritual connection to the land is everything to the First Nation people who
inhabit this land; family, plants, animals, sea, land and sky are all Country and as
individuals they too are part of Country. Their role was to care for Country and
they learnt to do so through storytelling, song and sharing of Traditional
Knowledge. 1
Who is Chidzey?
Sydney sculptor Keith Chidzey is a multifaceted artist: sculptor, land artist,
painter, driven by the magnificence and splendour of creation. This energy
manifests itself in various forms, through highlighting environmental
responsibility, prophecy through art, and promoting social justice. Chidzey has a
Bachelor of Fine Art (Painting /Drawing), a Master of Arts (Sculpture) and a
Master of Fine Arts (research in Sculpture). He works primarily in fine Australian
timber, bronze and fire and has exhibited his work in many sculpture and solo
exhibitions, both in Australia and internationally.
Recently, this has taken the structure of pursuing research into the history and
contemporary implications of the life and writing of St. Francis of Assisi.
Realization of this has taken material form, as commissions, residency work,
group and solo shows. Highlights include: lead artist of the Australian section of
the satellite eARTh Project for 350.org, and Third Place in the Video Art section of
the XI Florence Biennale in Italy.
Group Shows include:
• International Contemporary Art Exhibition (Assisi, Italy)
• Sculpture by the Sea (Bondi)
• Outback Art Prize (Broken Hill)
• Sculpture at Scenic World (Katoomba)
• Sculpture in the Vines (Hunter Valley)
• Sculpture at Hillview (Southern Highlands)
• International Wood Sculpture Symposium (Rylstone)
Commissions include:
• Amsterdam, Zorgvlied Cemetery (bronze memorial)
• Narellan, Magdalene Catholic High School (2.2m high timber/bronze figure)
• Thredbo, Private residence (1.5m bronze wombat)
• Gulgong, Mudgee Council (2.5m timber carving)
The Story of ‘Wet’
Having spent my life on Dhawaral land in southern Sydney, in and around the
waters of Port Hacking, Cronulla, Georges River, and down to Thirroul, I often feel
happiest when I am in or on the water in some form or another - ‘wet’.
It has only been in recent times, as I have purposefully delved into our First
Nations heritage, that I have begun to appreciate the land and our connection
more fully. For me, paddling in the shallows, sailing on the rivers and bays,
swimming in the surf surrounded by sand and gorgeous eucalypts are some of the
things that give me peace.
I am a water-man.
I like to splash.
This show is an expression of that connection.
Without the burden of having a ‘commercial show’ – no works are for sale on site
– I have the freedom to express myself as I wish, in various mediums. With works
ranging from my main professional vocation of fine Australian timber carving and
bronze casting, to mixed media, charcoal drawing, and both acrylic and oil
paintings.
Set on the foreshores of Georges River, thanks to the generosity of the Connells
Point Sailing Club, my work looks out over the river.
