The important takeaway is to look for what the formation is trying to achieve.
An ABCD extension may not always be textbook status, in fact if I see a
textbook style formation I tend to worry that it will fail under its own
anticipation. I am looking for the the way the volume is developing in the
formation, this shows me the intention of the traders involved. What’s most
important to me is the imbalance. Understanding where trades are profitable or
unprofitable gives the clues behind the validity of the setup.
I cringe when technical textbooks show ideal examples of these setups that never
seem to occur in real life. Here is an example of a real time ABCD extension I
am considering shorting at the time of writing.
Here is a closeup of the Weekly Chart Pattern for Cocoa Futures which has
developed into a Bearish ABCD formation. It is likely the pattern will selloff as
far as the height of the current pattern.
