The
Good Earth
ItM
by Miia. iv v. conn
I misquoted Mr. Walter Childless
Inst week on dusting with
Sabadllla dust for squash bugs.
1 understood him to say every
2 weeks He said, dust the
vines twice weekly nnd If rnln
conies, dust as quickly after
the shower as one can get Into
the gnidcn. without leaving
tracks in the mud.
Many people tills year have
complained of plants dying
overnight. This could be din-tone
of two tilings: the lack
of watei penet intlng completely
to the toots, or by bacteria
wilt If it is caused from bacterial
wilt only, the soft pints
of the plant, such as leaves
or petals, seem to wilt and die
overnight The stems die giad-uall- y.
If a Plant wilts and
will not tevive after a deep
watering, pull it out and bum
toot ftml all.
Soon (we hope! fall rains
will come, ami many plnnts
will be infected with jKiwdery
mildew Dusting the foliage
with sulphur dust, or spraying
with wettable sulphur, will often
conttol this fungus that not
nly makes unsightly foliage,
but often kills ennlns and dahlias.
Just when they are at the
peak of blooming. Mildcx and
Karathane are also effective.
Remember also when rains
come to be sine giound and
foliage is diy before walking
in the garden. Walking on wet
ground spieads mst. mildew,
and other hnrmful fungus. Rotter
to let n few beans or pens
become too old on the vines,
than to lose the whole patch
from rust or mildew.
Mildew in squash, cantnloupe
nnd cucumbers can better be
controlled with mlx-tu- boideaux ie
Sulphur alone will often
burn the foliage of these plants.
Mildcx or Karathane are also
effective.
Roses and zinnias respond
quickly to a dusting of sulphur
when mildew strikes the foliage
of these plants.
Take time out to go through
the garden nnd remove nil old
flowers nnd badly damaged
leaves; have the garden in
good shnpc, so the fall rains
enn produce a bountiful crop
of flowers and vegetables; to
enrich the "Good Earth" this
fall.
