NOTE

www.amazingtravelmag.co.uk

As winter fast approaches, the

days are colder, the nights are

longer and this issue has a

decidedly festive flavour. With travel

restrictions eased and the majority of

European cities now welcoming back

visitors, Winter Markets (page 8)

is our guide to the very best outdoor

fairs. You can also indulge in some

seasonal retail therapy by following

our luxury London shopping weekend

featured in Winter Wonderland

(page 78). One of the many things

I contemplated during the lockdown was the term ‘bucket list’

and its relevance in a post-pandemic world. Especially the idea

that you must itemise the destinations you want to see before

you die— and that those select destinations will somehow have

a grander impact on your physical being or mental health than

others—now seems outdated. The truth is, all travel is worthwhile,

and if we’ve taken anything away from the past 18 months or so,

it’s a realisation that life is uncertain and precious. Travel, at its

core, is about self-enrichment, which I guess is a life goal. But

should we expect a visit to natural wonders or exotic locations to

make us feel complete, or more enlightened, by the time we hit old

age? I think not. So whilst this issue includes our curated list of

Where To Go Next and When (page 52), we believe it’s a softer

and more realistic way of selling the old bucket list idea. The true

magic of travel becomes clear, I believe when you go on a trip not

expecting anything epic. That’s happened to me numerous times

over the Autumn, during travels across the UK with my wife.

Some of these visits are featured in New Romantics (page 24) and

Sights, Camera, Action (page 132) also reveals how sharing and

capturing Britain’s incredible views can help you reconnect with

and appreciate the beauty of travel. Whatever you plan to do this

winter, whether you wish to remain careful and cautious with your

movements, or you have more adventurous plans, It’s important

to focus on kindness, be there for each other and be grateful that

as this very special season comes around, the world continues to

slowly heal.

The festive season is upon us, so pack your warmest clothes and go

explore Europe’s beautiful and picturesque old squares with their

traditional Christmas markets. Hundreds of tiny stalls jostle for

attention at the foot of German, Austrian, French, and Czech gothic cathedrals.

Cobbled streets and squares look gorgeous when lit up with ornate lights and

dressed in seasonal decoration and you may bump into Santa or go visit him at

his grotto. A myriad of gifts are available to buy and follow your nose to those

selling traditional food and hot steaming drinks while enjoying the harmonious

sounds of Christmas carols. Tempted? Here is a list of 10 Christmas markets

you cannot miss this winter.

furnishings and large wall-to-wall glass doors that fold

back onto the sunbathing deck, drawing light even on dull

days.

Alternatively, there is a selection of cottages up to five

bedrooms including the Foxes Walk where we stayed. Located

a short walk from the inn, this outstanding three-storey

cottage featured a comfortable sitting room with a functioning

fireplace, huge dining table and ultra-modern, fully equipped

kitchen. A wonderfully landscaped outdoor terrace also

revealed an elevated hot tub where we enjoyed Sloe Gin under

the stars. You’ll also find a flat-screen TV with Netflix, books,

board games, fine linen, fluffy towels and a welcome treats of

bread, butter, milk, snacks, tea and pods for your Nespresso

machine.

On the menu is a selection of seasonal dishes creatively

cooked from fresh, local ingredients. Everything cooked is

BOVEY CASTLE,

DARTMOOR NATIONAL PARK

Nestled in the rolling valleys of Dartmoor National Park, standing within 275 acres of picturesque

countryside, is the luxurious 5 Red Star Bovey Castle. Initially opened as a hotel and golf resort in 1930 by

Great Western Railways, Bovey Castle hotel and spa is now a popular choice for stellar staycations thanks

to its exceptional hospitality and idyllic grounds.

Golf is an obvious activity if that’s your fancy, but why not

test your accuracy with archery or enjoy Dartmoor’s views

from horseback. There’s also falconry displays, clay pigeon

shooting, bike riding, and more. Or you could relax in the Elan

Spa. A sanctuary away from modern life, the Elan Spa echoes

the tranquil and therapeutic flow of the River Bovey with its

bespoke spa experiences and treatments.

Rooms

Featuring 60 individually designed bedrooms within the hotel

and 22 private country lodges, there’s lots of outstanding

accommodation on offer. The hotel is comprised of the original

manor house and private mews building across the courtyard,

where the rooms radiate warmth and elegance. The country

lodges combine the luxury of the hotel with the freedom to

holiday your way. We stayed in the wonderful Easdon Suite

with its grand stone balcony affording stunning views across

the estate and national park. This luxuriously large suite

included a lounge area with sofa, sumptuous fabrics throughout

and imposing dining table. Another highlight was the huge

modern bathroom with its fabulous double shower.

Food

Bovey Castle has multiple dining options including the Tasting

Room, an immersive experience creatively showcasing the

best seasonal and local produce. The Great Western Grill’s Art

Deco style echoes a bygone era and offers a seasonal menu that

uses locally sourced fresh ingredients to prepare sensational

dishes. We chose Smith’s Brasserie which is the more casual

of the options, boasting cosy seating and an outdoor terrace

overlooking the River Bovey. You’ll find a great selection of

flavours on the menu and everything we had was excellent.

But if you’re too busy enjoying the comforts of your private

lodge, you can order a freshly cooked, home-style meal

delivered to your door without leaving the sofa.•

THE BEACHCROFT HOTEL

WEST SUSSEX

Located on a seven-mile stretch of beach, with uninterrupted views of the sea, The Beachcroft Hotel provides

the perfect blend of a traditional British seaside holiday, complemented with a sense of true luxury and a

touch of romance.

Officially in the village of Felpham, you are just a few

minutes’ stroll from Bognor Regis and the train station is a

short 20-minute walk away. We stayed in one of the Beach Hut

Suites which are a luxurious addition to the more traditional

Hotel. These four suites blend the simplicity of a British

seaside holiday beach hut with the luxuries of modern living

and guests have full use of the hotel’s facilities including a

bar, restaurant and pool. During our weekend stay, we were

delighted to see that the resort supports and encourages an ecofriendly

environment with items made from recycled materials

to reduce plastic waste.

Rooms

Beautifully styled and equipped with all mod cons, there’s

a fun seaside vibe to the Beach Hut apartments with 1950s

style artwork, bright contemporary furniture and portal-style

windows. These suites have their own entrance and the sea

views are simply stunning, even on a wet weekend in October.

Other features include a Netflix-enabled smart TV, Nespresso

coffee machine, trendy Smeg kettle and fridge, and a large and

super comfy bed. Designed to comfortably accommodate up

to a family of four, the hotels’ dog-friendly policy means that

even your four-legged furry friends can come along and enjoy

that fabulous beach. The complementary sloe gin was also a

welcome treat after returning from a brisk coastal walk.

Food

We dined at the popular Tamarisk restaurant located in the

main Hotel and the a la carte menu was surprisingly varied.

Everything we had was excellent and the friendly service was

a real delight. Breakfast is also taken in the main hotel and

there’s a plentiful selection of cold and cooked items. One of

the best features of our stay was the hamper service which

delivered a continental breakfast straight to our door in a

beautiful wicker basket. The service felt like a proper holiday

treat as we sat on our patio, enjoyed a glass of prosecco and

watched the tide kiss the beach.•

Our verdict

Whether you’re looking for a romantic break to relax and

soak up the fresh air, or a fun-packed family break the

Beachcroft Beach Huts are a unique option

for your next

staycation. They offer all the quirky fun of the seaside with

a touch of luxury and quality.

Whilst we love a staycation, nothing beats getting on a flight to see

what other wonders the world has to offer. Consecutive lockdowns

these past couple of years have hindered our travelling ambitions, but

now that much more of the world is once again open for tourism, we set our sights

to next year’s adventures. We know you’re eager to start filling your calendars

with exciting trips to look forward to, so we’ve compiled a list of 20 incredible

destinations to give you some ideas.

Where To Go Next & When

VALDEZ, ALASKA, UNITED STATES

The city may be small,

but it’s a microcosm

of all the incredible

experiences Alaska has to

offer. Whatever time of year

you visit, there is a plethora

of incredible activities to

participate in, including

but not limited to: fjord

cruises, kayaking, hiking,

salmon and halibut fishing,

snowshoeing, snowmobiling

and ice climbing. There are

also gorgeous glaciers and

spectacular looking waterfalls,

which are kept looking

splendid thanks to the steady

amount of snow and rain

Valdez enjoys. It’s a dream

location for photographers.

Tourists are welcome all

year round, but peak season

is from June to

August — July

being the busiest

month. However,

the small city isn’t

on most people’s

radar so it’s

unlikely you’ll find

it too busy for your

liking. If you’re

more interested in

booking during its

cheapest month,

November is the

city’s quiet period

for tourism. But for extended

tours of Prince William Sound

— a must-visit for any tourist

to Valdez — you’ll want to

venture out there during the

summer months. The majestic

natural scenery and incredible

ROCKY MOUNTAINS, CANADA

rainforests and mountains

are best enjoyed during this

time. It’s also the best time for

watching the orcas, humpback

whales, sea otters, sea lions,

porpoises and all the other

intriguing animal life.

Also known as the

Canadian Rockies,

it’s home to Canada’s

most famous national parks.

Travellers from across the

globe are drawn to the Rocky

Mountains for its striking

natural scenery and thrilling

activities. It’s considered

one of Canada’s best hiking

spots and has several

accessible peaks perfect for

mountaineering, regardless of

your experience. The Rockies

also has some of the best skiing

and snowboarding resorts in

the world if you prefer your

activities fast-paced.

All the national parks are

Page 54

worth a visit but

top of your list

should be its

oldest: the Banff

National Park.

The turquoise

Lake Louise

is particularly

magical and

a highlight

attraction.

However, the real

draw is the large

mammals that

populate the park,

including elk, bighorn sheep,

moose, black bears, grizzly

bears and more. Guided tours

are a must to maximise your

Rocky Mountains experience.

When booking a tour, we

recommend you look between

mid-June and September.

Where To Go Next & When

ALTA, NORWAY

Often called the “aurora

borealis city,” Alta

provides the perfect

conditions for anyone wishing

to go northern lights hunting.

It’s the largest town in Norway’s

northernmost county and

being this far north means

aurora season stretches from

September through to March.

We recommend visiting in

winter so you can maximise

the full potential of your visit

with dogsledding, snowshoeing

and reindeer sleigh rides.

Furthermore, during its coldest

months, you can stay in a

luxurious hotel where both the

interiors and exteriors are made of snow and ice. The Sorrisniva Igloo Hotel lies on the Altaelva

river and is a truly unique staying experience surrounded by beautiful nature.

THE GALAPAGOS ISLANDS

Situated in the Pacific

Ocean around 600

miles from the coast

of Ecuador, this 19-island

archipelago is known for

remaining a secret for millions

of years and is relatively

unspoilt by humans. As such,

the Galapagos Islands has

been described as a unique

‘living museum and showcase

of evolution,’ and attracts

over 275,000 people every

year to admire the incredible

landscapes and animals for

themselves. Giant tortoises

are one of the biggest draws

to the islands. These creatures

are immense and beautiful,

and many have lived for over

100 years. You can also find

Sally Lightfoot

crabs,

Galapagos

penguins,

marine iguanas

and blue-footed

boobies.

Research

is essential

before you

make your trip.

You’ll want to

weigh up the

pros and cons

of land-based

accommodation versus staying

on a boat. You also need to

be aware of what to pack and

what you’re prohibited from

taking with you. Tourists are

welcome all year round, but

the cooler and drier months

are June through December.

August tends to be the coolest

month, whilst March and April

are usually the hottest and

wettest.

ANTIGUA, GUATEMALA

Declared a UNESCO

world heritage site

in 1979, this is an

enviable tourist destination that

is renowned for its beautiful

streets and rich cultural history.

Founded in 1543 as the seat of

Spanish power in the region,

the city was largely destroyed

by earthquakes in the 17th

century. However, many of

its photographable colonial

buildings were rebuilt and

have since been renovated.

One of the most exciting and

unique experiences in Antigua,

however, is the several

volcanoes you can tour. You

can even roast marshmallows

at Volcano Pacaya!

Swiss Alps is perfect for

a winter escape that

offers some of the most

breath-taking snowy scenery

the world has to offer. It’s the

top spot for skiing in the world,

boasting the best resorts and

ski slopes. If you’re a skier,

you absolutely must experience

these slopes at least once in

your life. Thus, we insist that

water sports enthusiasts visit

between December and March.

But it’s not just a destination

for thrilling sports, it’s also

great for hiking and full of

charming villages. Fantastic

Beasts fans will recognise the

village name of Grindelwald,

perfect for connecting with

nature and breathing in the

clean air. There’s also the

car-free village of Mürren,

Page 62

There’s no bad

time to visit the

city, it’s lovely

all year round.

However, its

annual Semana

Santa — the Holy

Week, or the week

leading up to

Easter — taking

place in April

is worth seeing.

Celebrations

involve locals

crafting stunning

“carpets” on the street from

coloured sawdust, flowers and

other materials, which can only

be admired for a few hours

before incredible religious

— recognisable

as Blofeld’s

Also not to be missed is the

mountain: the Matterhorn,

where every angle you snap

than the last. We should add

that whilst exploration is

KYOTO, JAPAN

Widely agreed to be

Japan’s cultural

capital (and was

once the official capital), it is

home to somewhere around

2,000 temples and shrines

— stunning masterpieces of

religious architecture that

you’ll want to capture with

your camera. Much of Japan

has adopted modernity, but

Kyoto embraces and remains

true to its cultural roots.

Just from wandering the

streets, it’s clear generations

of artisans have kept the

traditional arts and crafts alive,

from traditional Japanese

townhouses in downtown Gion

to the exquisite delights you’ll

find from speciality shops in

the Nishijin textile district.

Nishiki Market

— “Kyoto’s

kitchen” — also

offers a vast array

of culinary dishes,

from chic cocktail

bars and Michelinstarred

restaurants

to fantastic sushi

spots and izakaya

(Japanese pubeateries).

Kyoto is the

perfect place to

immerse yourself

in Japanese culture,

from the food to sleeping on

futons. The most popular times

to visit are between March

and May or from September

to November. It’s when the

weather is most ideal. Crowds

TAGHAZOUT, MOROCCO

Taghazout is off most

tourists’ radar, but it’s

only going to become

more popular as this idyllic

village continues to invest in

its tourism. Known as one of

Africa’s best surf destinations,

there’s a great choice of point,

beach and reef breaks that are

perfect for both total beginners

and seasoned pros. But even

if you’re not a surfer, the

abundant sunshine, golden

sands and deep blue waters

make the beaches beautiful

relaxation spots. Sunbathers

should consider travelling in

summer, it’s hotter and drier

during this time. The only

downside is that the beaches

can get crowded. Winter offers

more space and is

cooler but is less

ideal if you’re

looking to catch

a tan.

It’s also worth

considering the

wetter winter

months if a hike

to Paradise Valley

is on the agenda.

The secret oasis

at the foothills of

the High Atlas

Mountains is most

impressive when the water is

in full flow. Plus, you’ll work

up such a sweat even in the

cooler season that you’ll want

to take a plunge in the dazzling

turquoise waters to cool down.

are much thinner in the

summer and winter months.

However, June has a sticky

humidity that is uncomfortable

for most tourists, and January’s

chilly temperatures are not

much better.

The truly adventurous will

also not be able to resist the

surrounding cliffs that are

perfect for rock-jumping.

Page 65

GIVERNY, NORMANDY

Famous for where the

Impressionist painter

Claude Monet once

lived, this picturesque River

Seine-side village is a true feast

for the eyes. Monet designed

several glorious gardens with

the most exuberant colours,

which have been maintained

over the years. Of particular

note is the water garden, with

its Japanese bridge, water lilies,

wisteria and azaleas that are

reminiscent of the astounding

interpretations Monet painted

time and again. Giverny is a

haven for artists and art lovers

alike, who will also love the

Musée des Impressionnismes:

an art museum

promoting the

international nature

of the Impressionist

Movement, whilst

also tracing

the history and

highlights of

Impressionism and

Post-Impressionism

throughout the

20th century.

We recommend

planning your trip

during Giverny’s

shoulder season

in either April or October. It’s

also worth combining your

visit with a ride on the Eure

Where To Go Next & When

Valley Railway, which offers

a gorgeous scenic tour of the

Eure Valley.

NAPA VALLEY, CALIFORNIA, UNITED STATES

The Napa Valley was hit

hard by the pandemic

and a truly awful

string of wildfires. But Napa

has been rebuilt and proudly

displays its resilience through

its superb hotels, restaurants

and wineries. A good place

to begin your trip for both

convenience and affordability

is the American Canyon, which

happens to have easy access

to San Francisco. It’s also the

perfect destination for families

with close proximity to kidfriendly

attractions like the Six

Flags Discovery Kingdom.

Napa is the largest town in

the region, hosting stylish

boutiques, incredible wineries

and locally driven restaurants.

Shopping is a big thing here,

too, so expect to leave Napa

with a lighter wallet and full

Page 66

shopping bags. Then situated

at the northernmost tip of the

valley is Calistoga, which is

ideal for easy-going types who

want a more relaxed vacation.

August through October

or March through May are

the peak tourist seasons.

Scheduling your trip at the tail

end of the harvest season is

the most idyllic time to visit.

You’ll get to enjoy the area’s

stunning autumn weather and

the possibility of lower hotel

rates. If you’re looking for

something more affordable,

December and February are

great for thinner crowds and

several food festivals, such as

the Napa Truffle Festival.

ASSAM, INDIA

A

state in the northeast

of India, Assam is

well-known for its

wildlife, archaeological

sites and tea plantations. It’s

also situated closer to the

Himalayas than the Taj Mahal,

which makes it a region of

India off-the-beaten-track.

Guwahati, the state’s largest

city, is a brilliant place to visit

with its silk bazaars and the

hilltop Kamakhya Temple.

However, the biggest draw

is the wild animals. Seeking

out an Indian one-horned

rhinoceros at Kaziranga

National Park and exploring

the stunning evergreen forest at

LUXEMBOURG

Luxembourg is small,

so small you can drive

from top to bottom in

just over an hour. But make no

mistake, it’s a small country

that makes a big impact. If

you were to drive across the

country, you’d pass historic

tunnels, medieval castles and

untouched nature. Surrounded

by Belgium, France and

Germany, you could stay in

any one of those countries

and make Luxembourg part

of a grand European road trip.

But there’s plenty of reason

to vacation in Luxembourg

itself. Visit the fairytale-like

town of Vianden, which is

home to a fully restored castle

with origins dating from the

10th century. Also check out

the capital, Luxembourg City,

where the old is juxtaposed

Hoollongapar Gibbon

Sanctuary are truly

exciting experiences.

November through

to May is considered

the ideal times to visit.

We’d recommend

aiming for around

April time. The

cool winds blowing

from the Himalayan

foothills reduce heat

and humidity, the

orchids will have

bloomed, and the

locals will be full of

immense joy as they

celebrate Bihu, the

harvest festival.

with the new and has several

attractions, including the Grand

Ducal Palace and the Grand

Duke Jean Museum of Modern

Art.

The summer months between

June and August are the most

popular times for tourism. The

long sunny days and warm

temperatures draw European

travels to hike and admire

the mountains. Crowds may

be an issue, but the stunning

landscapes will compensate.

For milder temperatures and

fewer people, September and

October may be a better time to

visit.

QUEENSTOWN, NEW ZEALAND

Where To Go Next & When

The adventure capital of New Zealand

is perfect for anyone looking to

satiate their need for adrenaline.

From bungee jumping to riverboarding, the

range of activities on offer is the antidote

to anyone who is yearning to remedy the

many months of isolation with thrilling

adventure. Queenstown also has gentler

attractions for the laidback traveller,

including scenic lake cruises, spots for

fly fishing and golf courses. Bird-lovers

absolutely must visit the Kiwi Birdlife Park

and get a close-up with New Zealand’s

most famous bird. As a lot of your time will

be spent on exciting outdoor excursions,

visiting in the summer season is essential.

For New Zealand, the summer season runs

from December through to February, which

also makes it an excellent escape from the

British winter for a while.

OZARKS, ARKANSAS, UNITED STATES

If you’ve seen

Netflix’s Ozark, you

may have already been

bewitched by the striking

beauty of the Ozark Mountains

— otherwise known as the

Ozark Plateau or just the

Ozarks. As one of the largest

wilderness areas in the eastern

United States, there’s an

abundance of opportunities

for hiking, mountain biking

and other physical activities.

But if that’s not your style

then there’s plenty of nonphysical

pursuits too, such

as long scenic drives past

dazzling rivers and waterfalls.

It’s also quite likely you’ll

encounter elk on your travels.

Eureka Springs is a mustvisit,

a peaceful spot where its

Page 70

winding streets are lined

with Victorian homes

hugging the cliff sides

and has block after block

of unique boutiques,

art galleries, spas,

restaurants, museums,

craft emporiums and

more.

Clear, rainless days

with comfortably warm

temperatures are the

most favourable times

to visit the Ozarks,

especially as you’ll be

outdoors most of the time.

Therefore, early May

to late June is your best

bet. Alternatively, mid-

August to mid-October is

also a favourable time for

tourists.

Where To Go Next & When

TAIPEI, TAIWAN

The capital of Taiwan, a

modern metropolis with

Japanese colonial lanes,

is a foodie’s dream. Known for

its lively street-food scene, you

can find the most delectable

delicacies 24 hours a day.

There are also Michelin-star

restaurants, hole-in-the-wall

eateries and shrimping bars

on Zhìshàn Road — where

you literally catch your own

dinner. Its night markets are

equally renowned, such as the

expansive Shilin market, where

you’ll find more incredible

food vendors alongside

cinemas, video arcades and

karaoke bars.

Impossible to miss

is the bambooshaped

Taipei 101

skyscraper, which

stands at 1,667

feet tall. Take the

rapid elevator to

the observatory

near the top and

capture Taipei’s

impressive views.

Between March

and May is a

good time to visit

Taipei. Rainfall

is comparatively light, the

cherry trees will have begun to

SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA

Capital of New South

Wales and Australia’s

largest city, Sydney is

home to hundreds of beaches

and spectacular waterside

fronts. You could make a

whole holiday out of searching

for the city’s lesser-known

stretches of sand, but if you’re

looking for the most stunning

sea views then the massive

Darling Harbour and Sydney

Tower’s Skywalk are musts.

The latter offers awe-inspiring

panoramic views of the city

and suburbs. Shoppers will also

be spoilt for choice, especially

if you’re looking to expand

your wardrobe. Sydney has

everything from Australian

designers to vintage shops and

eclectic boutiques. Don’t forget

to visit arguably Sydney’s most

iconic attraction: the Sydney

Opera House. But the super

adventurous must seek

out the city’s dive sites,

which are relatively

unknown even to locals.

The biodiversity in the

waters surrounding

Sydney is extraordinary.

The wide array of

wildlife includes weedy

sea dragons and giant

cuttlefish, all of which

makes exploring these

dive sites an epic

once-in-a-lifetime

opportunity.

September through

November or from

March to May is typically

favoured by tourists.

Temperatures tend to be

comfortable and these months

skirt Sydney’s high and low

seasons. We’d recommend

aiming to travel towards

the end of May, which will

blossom and the temperature

is typically warm but not

unbearably so.

coincide with the city’s most

beloved annual events, such as

Vivid Sydney’s outdoor light

installations and projections

across the city that make for a

fantastic immersive experience.

SENTOSA ISLAND, SINGAPORE

Where To Go Next & When

Sentosa translates to “peace and

tranquillity” in Malay, which is

interesting considering it has since

been referred to by some as “Asia’s

Favourite Playground.” Home to a

Universal Studios theme park, the world’s

largest oceanarium and Asia’s tallest

observation tower, this unassuming island

off Singapore’s south coast has a jawdropping

wow factor. But that’s far from

all the attractions worthy of awe. The

panoramic views all the way to Indonesia

from the Tiger Sky Tower, the restored

military museum of Fort Siloso and the

palm-lined, crescent-shaped Tanjong

Beach are all equally spectacular. Rainfall

is frequent throughout the year, of which

November is usually the rainiest month.

So unless you’re a fan of wet holidays,

November is best avoided. March and

April are typically drier by comparison.

JACKSON HOLE, WYOMING, UNITED STATES

If you’re looking for

America’s most exhilarating

ski resorts then Wyoming’s

Jackson Hole is the place to

go. Jackson, a town in the

valley, boasts three ski areas

that will thrill any snow sports

enthusiasts. However, it’s

Amangani that boasts to be

the best of American luxury

skiing. Instagrammers are sure

to be entranced, it’s where the

tantalising snowcapped scenery

of the Glacier National Park

meets the picturesque infinity

pool. Naturally, winter is the

most ideal season to maximise

your snow sporting experience.

However, Jackson Hole

isn’t just for skiers. Other

star attractions include both

Page 74

the Yellowstone

and Grand

Teton national

parks. In fact,

THE HAGUE, NETHERLANDS

Everyone always talks about

Amsterdam and Rotterdam

when visiting the Netherlands,

but not to be overlooked is one of the

largest and most important cities in the

country. The Hague is more than just

the “judicial capital of the world”, it’s

an airy and sophisticated cosmopolitan

metropolis that boasts astounding

architecture, golden beaches, stunning

skyscrapers and more. Art history buffs

will particularly love the Mauritshuis

— a picture gallery that houses the

famous Girl with the Pearl Earring. One

of the Hague’s top spots, however, is

Scheveningen, which boasts a beautiful

beach resort and the amazing miniature

city of Madurodam.

There’s no bad time to visit the Hague,

although June to August is without a

doubt the most ideal time to enjoy resort districts like Scheveningen. Although, the city is especially

striking in bloom, so if you schedule your trip for April then you’ll be in time for the blossoming of

daffodils. Alternatively, the tulips — the Dutch national flower — brighten up in May.

ANTARCTICA

Once upon a time,

Antarctica was only

reachable by the most

daring and experienced of

explorers. But now the White

Continent is more accessible to

the average tourist, although it

is an endangered place due to

changes from global warming.

Therefore, a sustainable

expedition cruise is essential

if you wish to see this icy

paradise. October to March

is typically when you’ll find

voyages available to book.

There are numerous reasons

to visit this vast marvellous

continent. It’s the only

permanent landing area for

the Emperor Penguin. It’s

also in these

waters where

many species

of whale are

found, including

the Humpback,

Sperm, Blue

and Orca

(“killer whale”).

Deception

Island is an

active volcano,

which creates

an extraordinary

landscape of

volcanic slopes,

steaming

beaches and ash-layered

glaciers. There’s the nicknamed

tourist destination named for

its breath-taking beauty. There

really is something for every

awe-seeking traveller.

Nichols and Fortnum & Mason. But London also boasts a wealth of

concept stores, lesser known independents, and spe tacular flagships

that are equally essential visits when in the capital. We’ve curated a

choice of London’s to stores for the ultimate guide to luxury shopping

Europe with 4 magnificent floors of pure

luxury and even boasts a VIP apartment

for exclusive clientele.

SlOane Street

The only other street in

Highlands Adventure

London to Fort William to Torridon

Our adventure started at Euston Station

where we caught the Caledonian Sleeper

train up to Fort William. The ability to leave

London in the evening and wake up in the north

the next morning makes the service one of the

great rail journeys the UK can offer. It also carries

major points for convenience, removing the need

to embark at the crack of dawn or go through the

hassle of travelling by air during a pandemic.

Our twin Club room is decorated with tartan

fabrics and there’s an in-room washbasin and an

en-suite toilet and shower. Complimentary Arran

Aromatics toiletries are a nice touch and a menu

reminds you that room service is available. The beds

are small but pretty comfy once you're tucked in.

And although it’s not the most restful night’s sleep

we’ve ever had, we still get a good few hours rest.

But the highlight of the whole trip is breakfast in

the Club Car. It can be brought to your room, but

we enjoyed a full Scottish in blissful silence as the

Scottish countryside came into view. Illuminated

by the golden early morning sunshine, cascading

waterfalls and the majestic sight of Stags, it harked

back to a golden age of train travel.

On arrival at Fort William, we picked up our

ride for the trip, a fabulous Jeep Wrangler courtesy

Regal and majestic, the lochs

and mountains of the Scottish

Highlands have a long and proud

tradition of both defying and welcoming

wide-eyed intruders eager to either

dominate the ancient lands or enwrap

themselves in their natural splendour.

The Romans fell afoul of the natives’

staunch defences, and Proud Edward’s

armies were famously sent homeward

‘tae think again’ in the 1300s – as

immortalised in the country’s de facto

national anthem, Flower of Scotland.

Sky-high peaks, miles-long lochs, rugged

coastlines with wild tides and unspoiled,

evergreen glens all call the Highlands

home. In addition to its massive

mainland, the Scottish Highlands

encompass four clusters of equally

engrossing islands located miles off the

north and west coasts, taking off-the-grid

travel to a whole new level.

of Stellantis. I’m sure our journey to the North

West would have been outstanding in any car, but

navigating the highlands in such an iconic and

capable vehicle delivered the ultimate rugged road

trip experience. It was reassuring to know that with

its serious off-road credentials, the Wrangler had

the capability to take on any narrow or winding

mountain path that awaited us.

Ben Nevis from

Soldiers Bridge

Fort William is a magnet for devotees of

the Scottish Highlands and especially for those

who love open-air pursuits, it’s not known as

the outdoor capital of the UK for nothing. The most

popular attraction in Fort William is also the biggest.

Ben Nevis stands at 1,345m (4,412ft) tall, this hulk

of a mountain is the highest in the UK and attracts

125,000 visitors to its slopes every year. If you plan

to spend time exploring the region, a good place

to start is the visitor centre in Glen Nevis – it has

information on the mountain and local area, as well

as toilets, a shop, picnic benches and car park.

From May to October, the West Highland Railway

Line plays host to the Hogwarts Express steam train,

Page 94

or the Jacobite as it’s also known. Running from Fort

William to Mallaig and back, the route is stunning

whatever the weather. It’s been called the most

beautiful railway in the world many times – add in

this special steam train and it’s an experience not to

be missed. The Glenfinnan Viaduct – also known as

the “Harry Potter bridge” – with its views of Loch

Shiel is breathtaking.

Having completed our Fort William checklist, we

joined the A82 under dramatic grey skies to begin

the exciting road-trip element of our journey. Our

destination Torridon, lies 3 hours North West where

a stay at one of the most unique hotels in the world

awaited us.

T

he Torridon is set on 58 acres of private parkland in one of the most scenic parts of Scotland. Located on the

banks of Loch Torridon, the property overlooks an iconic Scottish Highlands landscape: towering mountains,

glittering lochs, and miles upon miles of fields and forests.

The lounge and bar areas are lovely places to unwind, read your

book, play a board game – there is even a carefully positioned

telescope for guests to use by one of the windows. Look out

for the astronomy ceiling in honour of Queen Victoria in the

lounge – the Torridon was once the home of Ada Lovelace (Lord

Byron’s daughter) and her husband. But as nice as the hotel and

its neighbouring inn are, the real reason to visit this area is for the

sublime scenery. You may choose to just stroll the acres of grounds

for ever-changing views of the loch and mountains, or perhaps

you’d like to venture further afield to the beautiful loch of Diabaig

or the wild peninsula of Applecross. Alternatively, join in one of

the activities offered to guests of the hotel. We enjoyed a great

afternoon of clay pigeon shooting with the hotel’s Highland’s cows

watching in amusement. Throughout our stay, the service was

excellent. The majority of those working at The Torridon also live

in, resulting in a community of togetherness that translates to the

guests.

Rooms

Rooms are pleasingly comfortable, with huge comfy beds,

Nespresso machines and Tunnock’s Teacakes, Sky TV and

decent wi-fi considering the remote location. Our room had a

fabulous view overlooking the loch and a huge bathroom with

freestanding bath, a much welcome feature after the 14-mile

long ‘Falls of Balgy’ hike we went on.

Food

On our first night, we dined in the splendour of the 3 AA

Rosette 1887 fine-dining restaurant where the décor is suitably

refined. The five-course, set menu was delicious and head

chef Paul Green wows with the best local produce. On the

second evening, crowd-pleasing dishes were the order of

the day at the hotel’s casual eatery, Bo & Muc restaurant.

Neighbouring Beinn Bar serves local ales and Scottish gins,

including The Torridon’s own gin, Arcturus. After dinner, be

sure to check out the Whisky Bar. It’s a cosy, welcoming room

with over 350 whiskies and a fair few gins too. Bar staff are

very knowledgeable and can guide you through the whiskies to

find the perfect dram for you.•

THE TORRIDON

“ ”

Our verdict

For all the wonderful food and activities, It’s The Torridon’s

setting that sticks in the mind. Those staggering hills and

dramatic skies, it all gets under your skin and is the star

attraction.

Torridon to Fort William to Ballachulish

As we departed Torridon to head

back down towards Glencoe, the

grey October Scottish weather

was replaced with surprising glorious

sunshine. This allowed us to park the Jeep

at the roadside of many of the spots we

had not been able to stop and view on the

way up including one of Scotland’s most

famous castles, Eilean Donan. Located

on the meeting point of three lochs, and

surrounded by stunning scenery, the castle

is well known to many having appeared

on screen in such movies as Highlander,

James Bond film The World is Not

Enough, and Elizabeth – The Golden Age.

Across the water off the west coast is the

Isle of Skye – an excellent choice for a day trip,

especially if you can make it to the north of the

island to visit the beautiful Dunvegan Castle.

The otherworldliness of the castle and of Skye

itself is enhanced by the mystery and legends

surrounding one of the heirlooms on display

– the Fairy Flag. The flag is claimed to have

been either a gift from the fairies to an infant

chieftain hundreds of years ago or a gift to a

chief from a departing fairy lover. The yellow

silk flag is alternatively said to have come from

the Far East, the Crusades, or Viking armies,

Ballachulish

and is described as having magical properties

that help to multiply a clan’s military forces,

save lives, cure cattle plagues and increase fish

stocks. Decide for yourself which version you’ll

carry home with you.

As we headed south back towards Fort William

we arrived at Invergarry, a lovely village at the

foot of Glengarry, on the main route to Fort

William through the Great Glen. Loch Oich,

Loch Garry and the Glengarry Forest are among

the natural attractions of this area as is the

nearby ruined 17th century Invergarry Castle on

the shore of Loch Oich.

Surrounded by some of the

most dramatic and beautiful

scenery in Scotland,

Ballachulish (pronounced Ba-la-hoolish)

is a perfect base for exploring the

amazing landscape of Glencoe. The

village is split into two - North

Ballachulish and South Ballachulish

- and is situated on either side of

Loch Leven, where it flows into Loch

Linnhe.

Picture postcard scenery

notwithstanding, it was a long drive and

we were in need of some respite by the

time we arrived at the hotel we that we

would be calling home for the next day.

BALLACHULISH HOTEL

Highlands Adventure

Ballachulish Hotel allows guests to surround themselves with some of the most breathtaking scenery you

can hope for. As you make your way down the glen through the dramatic Glencoe, the mountains divide to

expose the wide waters of Loch Linnhe stretching before you.

The Ballachulish Hotel is a turreted baronial Highland home,

located right on the lochside with a mountain backdrop. Log fires

roar all year, adding to the Highland atmosphere the Ballachulish

Hotel exudes. The hotel is everything you would want it to be,

warm, welcoming, and incredibly comfortable with a tangible sense

of pride in its heritage.

Rooms

The hotel’s traditional yet brightly styled rooms come with a

large comfy bed, Smart TVs, tea and coffee making facilities

and decent Wi-Fi. Our cosy feature room provided a lovely

view overlooking the loch and the bathroom was large with a

free-standing bath and fluffy robes and towels.

Food

We enjoyed a brilliantly-cooked dinner in FISH restaurant

which overlooks the loch. Oysters two ways to start was

followed by generous Fish and Chips and the wonderful

Langoustine Scampi. The Bulas Bar has a contemporary

atmosphere with roaring log fires and a fine selection of wines,

beers and single malt whiskies. Food is also served daily in the

bar. In the morning, all guests can enjoy a breakfast buffet. It’s

a classic Scottish breakfast, and it was super delicious with a

large pot of coffee.•

“ ”

Our verdict

The scene was set when we drove into the gravelled carpark

of the Ballachulish Hotel. We immediately felt a powerful

sense of history thanks in no small part to the breathtaking

view across the adjoining loch.

Glencoe

Sculpted by an ice-age glacier and studded

with deep lochs and soaring mountains,

Glencoe is home to some of the most

dramatic scenery in the UK or anywhere else

in the world. It’s a life-affirming location that

you should aim to visit at least once in your

life. Approximately 420 million years ago, a

massive volcano spewed boiling lava and sheets

of ash into the sky above the area that we now

know as Scotland. It was during this period the

rounded, rocky mountains were born. Glencoe’s

distinctive appearance was further sculpted by

glaciers during the most recent Ice Age, which

ended about 10,000 years ago. Strictly speaking,

Glen Coe refers to the glen itself, whereas

Glencoe is the name of the village that lies at the

foot of the glen. In practice, Glencoe is used for

both as I’ve done here.

Glencoe‘s moody, grey skies and dramatic,

desolate terrain have made it a prime

location for filmmakers. If you have ever

watched Braveheart, Monty Python and the

Holy Grail or Harry Potter then you are more

familiar with this place than you know. Its

untamed appearance and constantly shifting

natural light have made it the ideal choice for

directors who wish to transport their audiences

back in time. Natives still speak of the Massacre

of Glencoe, which took place in 1692. A group

of Jacobites remained loyal to exiled Stuart King

James II. James was deposed for a variety of

reasons—including identifying as a Catholic.

At least 30 members of the Clan of MacDonald

were brutally murdered by troops of King

William of Orange for supposedly failing to

pledge allegiance to the new king. Historians

claim that there was serious treachery involved

because there is some evidence that members

Page 106

Winter 2021.indd 106 09/11/2021 15:24:10

Highlands Adventure

of the Clan of MacDonald offered William of

Orange’s troops food and shelter before the

attack. Some claim that Glencoe is referred to as

“the Weeping Glen” because of the sad fate of

certain members of the Clan of MacDonald.

To say that Scottish weather is unpredictable

is an understatement, but visit between May and

October for the best chance of dry(ish) days, but

this spectacularly scenic glen is hugely popular

with hikers, hillwalkers and mountaineers

throughout the year. Many of them will be

tackling the road-facing peaks of Aonach Dubh,

Beinn Fhada and Gearr Aonach, the mountains

that are together known as the Three Sisters

of Glencoe, also known as Bidean Nam Bian.

Although these peaks are the known focal point,

the highest summits are hidden in the depths of

the mountain range.

The road trip along the Glen Etive road is

definitely one of our highland highlights. This

scenic drive which was the setting for the James

Bond film Skyfall, is small but perfectly formed,

with just 12 miles of single-track road leading to

a dead end on the banks of Loch Etive, a huge

saltwater loch that connects to the sea north of

Oban. The road starts among the famous peaks

of Buachaille Etive Mor and Buachaille Etive

Beag and follows the River Etive through wild

moorland and forests, past lochs and traditional

white stone cottages until you reach the banks of

Loch Etive.

As the sunset and the rain started lashing

down, we headed back through the valley

and onto our next hotel, The Glencoe Inn and

gathering Situated in the shadow of the Pap of

Glencoe, overlooking Loch Leven.

GLENCOE INN & GATHERING

The Glencoe Inn is set in the heart of one of the most spectacular places in Scotland, Glencoe Village. This

welcoming Inn with its stunning location in the shadow of the Pap of Glencoe, overlooking Loch Leven is

warm, friendly and full of character.

A stay here is all about traditional Scottish hospitality

complemented by the nature and adventure that awaits outdoors.

This hotel has a modern yet comfy feel and suits travellers looking

for a great base to explore the magic of the area. It has received

a recent renovation but cosy elements remain, like fireplaces and

bookshelves full of books.

Rooms

Rooms reflect the scenic setting with earthy tones and

accent colours. Our’s was comfortable and updated to every

modern standard. There was a super comfy bed, flatscreen TV

complimentary Wi-Fi and a freestanding bath with a breathtaking

view across Loch Leven from our window. We also had

use of a landscaped terrace, hot tub and sauna.

Food

There are various dining options at The Glencoe including the

popular Fish and Chip Co, offering purportedly the best Fish

and Chip supper in the Highlands. We dined in the intimate

yet relaxed Steak and Lobster Bistro and the food was both

plentiful and delicious. Ingredients sourced close by include

Lobster, black pudding, scallops and, of course, grilled scotch

beef. With a log fire in the heart of the restaurant and large

windows with views of the surrounding mountains, it’s a

perfect place to dine and reflect on memories made in the

glen.•

Our verdict

Scotland rarely gets better than Glencoe village – a

destination for fresh air aficionados with a taste for

adventure. The Glencoe Inn & Gathering

is a charming

hotel set in spectacular scenery that won’t disappoint when

you arrive back after a busy day exploring.

SAN FRANCISCO, UNITED STATES

Writing Retreats

First established in 1948, this world-renowned

saloon has since become a historical monument

to jazz, poetry, art and the best of the Beat

Generation. Located in North Beach at 255 Columbus

Avenue, it was once frequented by famous Beat poets

like Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg. The Vesuvio

Café now regularly welcomes those who have followed

the Beat trail over the years. This makes the twostorey

bar and café an enviable writing spot. Its rich

diversity of clientele will also make for great people

watching and give you a colourful cast of characters to

write about. When you need a break, just head across

the neighbouring Jack Kerouac Alley to the equally

renowned City Lights Bookstore. More than just a

bookshop, City Lights is the independent press that

published Allen Ginsberg’s influential collection Howl

Here’s an idea, why not go writing in the woods?

According to A.A. Milne’s son, the real

Christopher Robin, the Hundred Acre Wood

from Winnie the Pooh was directly inspired by the

picturesque Ashdown Forest. Along the trail, you’ll even

find Poohsticks Bridge, named after the game Milne and

his son played that was later included in Milne’s stories.

Picnics are permitted and you can sit on a bench outside

the Forest Centre. So why not take your notebook (or

fully-charged laptop) and immerse yourself in the same

woodland that inspired tales featuring beloved characters

like Pooh, Piglet, Tigger and Eeyore? If you need a

comfortable place to stay, there’s the Ashdown Park

Hotel and Country Club. Surrounded by the stunning

forest, the hotel promises the heights of luxury in the

heart of East Sussex. It sounds like the perfect place to

recharge your creative batteries.

LA CLOSERIE DES LILAS

PARIS, FRANCE

Writing Retreats

Situated within Montparnasse, the artistic

hub of Paris, this was another home away

from home for Ernest Hemingway. It was

at La Closerie de Lilas that Hemingway first

read his friend F. Scott Fitzgerald’s manuscript

of The Great Gatsby. The idyllic café had a

reputation for welcoming and nurturing many

starving artists, becoming a famous spot for

many wordsmiths to sit and write for hours

whilst spending little. It attracted great writers

like Gertrude Stein, Ezra Pound, Oscar Wilde,

Charles Baudelaire, among many others. The

café was also where James Joyce decided to

celebrate Ulysses, a controversial novel at the

time, being published by a major publisher.

Why not see how little you can spend whilst you

work on your masterpiece-in-progress.

LITERATURNOE KAFE

ST. PETERSBURG, RUSSIA

Literally translating to “Literary Café”

this is the place to go when visiting St.

Petersburg, the cultural capital of Russia.

The Literaturnoe Kafe was a favourite spot for

many Russian journalists and writers, including

Fyodor Dostoevsky — author of Russian classics

like Crime and Punishment and The Brothers

Karamazov. However, its most famous patron

was Alexander Pushkin, perhaps one of the most

famous and influential Russian writers of all time.

It’s even rumoured that this was the place where

he ate his last meal before dying in a duel in 1837.

The café commemorates Pushkin with a wax figure

sitting at a table by the window upstairs. Grab a

drink or a meal and rekindle your creative passion

by sitting where some of the most notable figures in

Russia’s literary history once frequented.

ANTICO CAFFÈ GRECO

ROME, ITALY

Writing Retreats

Over 250 years old, this cosy café

has been popular with many writers

over its long history. Many notable

patrons include playwright Henrik Ibsen,

poets John Keats and Lord Byron, and

author Hans Christian Andersen, among

many other famous wordsmiths and artists.

The Antico Caffè Greco has played host to

so many literary geniuses over the centuries

that it has become an iconic creative hotspot

that remains a haven for writers and artists

to this day. When in Rome, grab a coffee

where some of literature’s greatest minds

once sat. Perhaps some greatness will find

its way into your book.

AMBOS MUNDOS HOTEL

HAVANA, CUBA

Page 116

In the 1930s, many writers stayed and wrote in the

Ambos Mundos Hotel, but none more famous

than American novelist and Nobel laureate Ernest

Hemingway. From 1932 to 1939, the historic hotel was

a regular residence of the author, a place he thought

was perfect for writing. Many of his works were started

here, including For Whom the Bell Tolls — one of his

most celebrated novels about the Spanish Civil War.

Room 511, Hemingway’s “first home” in Cuba, has been

preserved as a small museum that holds several of the

writer’s belongings and is curated to appear as he would

have left it. Start your day with a tour and let the spirit of

Hemingway imbue you with creativity. To relax after a

long day of writing, head to the Plaza de Armas restaurant

where you can eat the same dishes favoured by the

novelist. Alternatively, head up to the Roof Garden and

enjoy an exquisite barbeque whilst you take in the same

stunning views that inspired Hemingway.

DYLAN THOMAS BOATHOUSE AND CAFÉ

LAUGHARNE, WALES

Dylan Thomas grew up in Wales and lived in

a boathouse in the serene seaside village of

Laugharne, which you can go and visit. Or at

least, you will eventually be allowed to visit again.

At the time of writing, the boathouse has not yet fully

reopened for tours. However, the tearoom is open on

Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays. So you

can still settle down with a nice cuppa and a scone

whilst you take in the same remarkable views that

Thomas saw from his window. It was these beautiful

sights that inspired many of the Welsh poet’s writings,

such as “Over Sir John’s Hill.” If you’re looking for

accommodation, the Brown’s Hotel is an iconic literary

address. It’s the social hub of Laugharne, but more

importantly, it was Dylan Thomas’ favourite watering

hole — he even used to leave the bar’s phone number

as his own.

THE CHELSEA HOTEL

NEW YORK CITY, UNITED STATES

The Hotel Chelsea — more commonly referred

to as The Chelsea Hotel — has been closed for

renovations for some time. However, the word

is it’ll reopen by the end of 2021. When it does, it’ll

possess an elegant luxury to match its legacy as the

favourite hotel for many of literature’s most notable

names. Guests have included beloved poet and activist

Maya Angelou, the aforementioned Welsh poet Dylan

Thomas, great American playwrights like Tennessee

Williams and Arthur Miller, the Beat poets Jack Kerouac

and Allen Ginsberg, and so many more. Arthur C. Clarke

called the Chelsea his “spiritual home” whilst Patti

Smith described it as “an energetic, desperate haven for

scores of gifted hustling children from every rung of the

ladder.” With such a rich literary legacy it’ll undoubtedly

be a hotspot for the best creative minds. Perhaps this is

the place to realise your literary ambitions.

THE ELEPHANT HOUSE

EDINBURGH, SCOTLAND

Writing Retreats

A

list of the best writing spots would be

incomplete without the place J.K. Rowling

spent many hours penning the magical wonders

of the bestselling Harry Potter series. The Scottish

author once sat in the back room at a table overlooking

Edinburgh Castle. It sounds like the perfect setting to

discover your own magic and maybe start your own

fantasy series. The Elephant House has certainly been

a popular spot for other bestselling authors, such as Ian

Rankin and Alexander McCall-Smith. Although closed

at the time of writing due to fire and water damage,

all news suggests the café will reopen in 2022. You’ll

soon be able to take full advantage of their large

selection of teas, coffees, wines, beers and affordable

array of cakes. Serving breakfast, lunch and dinner,

The Elephant House will have everything you need

to stay well-nourished for a full day of uninterrupted

writing.

PERA PALACE HOTEL

ISTANBUL, TURKEY

Page 120

The Pera Palace Hotel has attracted many famous

writers to Turkey’s capital city. Its most notable

guest, however, was none other than the creator

of Miss Marple and Hercule Poirot, the novelist

Agatha Christie. Some believe it was the Pera Palace

Hotel where she spent her 11 lost days, a mystery that

remains unsolved. It’s also rumoured she wrote the

bestseller Murder on the Orient Express in Room 411 —

a room she often stayed in as a frequent visitor between

1926 and 1932. The room has since been renamed the

Agatha Christie Room and is furnished in the style of the

period when the author visited. It also includes a replica

of the typewriter Christie used and houses shelves of her

books, published in multiple languages. Perhaps you’ll

be inspired to pen your own bestselling mystery, whether

you book into Christie’s luxurious room or another

within the hotel.

24 HOURS

IN SOHO

Soho has bucketful’s of atmosphere, with neon-bright lights and a

continuous buzz of people – both tourists and locals alike. In a part

of London which never appears to sleep, you will never tire of finding

fabulous things to do. We sent Holly Cannon to the square mile to construct the

perfect Soho day and night.

You could spend a lifetime exploring London and not even scratch the surface (trust us,

we’ve tried). As one of the world’s most vibrant cities, Britain’s bustling capital is bursting

with things to see and do. But if you want to hang somewhere that’s brimming with

diversity for fun-loving people, where you can find a bustling bar or restaurant day or night, then we

advise you to head to Soho. People from different walks of life, race and culture can be found here.

Bordering the areas of Leicester Square and China Town, Soho is situated in the heart of London’s

West End and as bustling as it is, covers no more than a square mile. You can stroll through its

streets in less than an hour, but if you don’t know your way around, you may end up walking around

for hours without discovering its secrets. As small as Soho is, it boasts no less than 7 Michelin star

restaurants, unique boutiques and the world-renowned department store Liberty. This is today’s

Soho. But the area wasn’t always like this. Soho was once host to brothels and illegal speakeasies

were once the norm. In a way, this naughtiness is the area’s claim to fame and what many

Londoners and visitors have come to love Soho for.

MORNING

Carnaby Street

If you are in Soho to shop you will want to make Carnaby

Street your first stop. Known for its British brands such as

Ben Sherman and Lazy Oaf, this particular street is known

for its more quirky flagship stores. For a unique pair of shoes,

head to Irregular Choice for shoes that will catch everyone’s

attention every time you wear them. If you are visiting

London during the Christmas season, Carnaby Street has

some of the brightest light decorations in London, which often

follow suit in being as different as the stores below them.

Christmas Lights can also be found along Regent’s Street and

Oxford Street. It’s when the weather is most ideal. Crowds are

much thinner in the summer and winter months. However,

June has a sticky humidity that is uncomfortable for most

tourists, and January’s chilly temperatures are not much better.

Oxford Street and Regents Street

Page 124

For mainstream fashion in Soho, you

can’t beat shopping along London’s

famed Oxford Street. This busy

street is world-famous for shopping, stores

include the flagship Nike and Primark

stores and everyone’s favourite, the Disney

store. Oxford Circus lies on the corner of

Bloomsbury where the neighbourhood meets

Soho and Mayfair, and the iconic shopping

district encompassing Regent Street is not

to be missed. The thoroughfares are packed

with the UK’s top brands and stores, offering

plenty of choices to suit any shopper’s tastes.

you will find over 20 of the best

international eateries and bars,

making it the perfect place to

catch up with old friends over a

coffee, a cocktail and good food.

LUNCH

Pasta Heaven at Bancone

Bancone has two locations in Central London, their first Covent Garden outpost near Trafalgar

Square and their Golden Square branch in Soho which opened in 2019. Whilst Genoa has the

famous pesto Genovese, Rome has the carbonara, and Bologna of course, has the Bolognese,

Bancone has chosen not to stick to one region and instead showcases speciality pasta recipes

from all across Italy. Bancone has experienced an almost cult status with Londoners with much-

Instagrammed dishes like the silk handkerchief with walnut butter topped with a beautiful confit egg

yolk and the bucatini cacio e pepe.

All the pasta dishes are well-priced, ranging from £9 to £13.50 including our plate of half-moon

shaped ravioli, stuffed with spinach and ricotta and served in sage butter and the squid ink tagliolini

served in a tomato and garlic sauce. Save some space for pudding as the coconut panna cotta is

delicious and refreshing with a mango and passion fruit compote.

Become a Wizard

Located on Wardour Street, The House

of Minalima is a shop and exhibition

showcasing the graphic art of the Harry

Potter films. Miraphora Mina and Eduardo

Lima created some of the most rememberable

pieces for one the greatest film franchises

of our time, including the iconic Hogwart’s

acceptance letter. The quirky store is bursting

with pieces of film history with memorabilia

available to purchase as well. The House of

Minamalina is open every day from 12pm –

7pm every day and is one of the best things to

do in Soho during the day. The weekends do

get really busy, so don’t be surprised if you

have to queue on Saturdays and Sundays (and

sometimes in the week!).

Head to Chinatown

Spend Some Time on Soho Square

Page 128

Want a feel of China in London?

Chinatown is where you need to go.

Here, the food, drinks, and even the air

has a way of transporting you to China. Some of

the bars and cafes found at Chinatown are YiFang,

W London Hotel, Caffe Concerto, The Blue Posts,

Cappacha and De Hems. You can visit the traditional

Chinese bakery – Bake and The Chinatown Bakery

for something sweet, like a matcha teriyaki fish (it’s

a thing).

One of the things we love about

London is no matter where you

are, no matter how central, there’s

always a spot nearby for you to take five

and relax. Soho Square is small oasis of

relative calm in the middle of Soho. It’s

got a laidback and peaceful vibe – even

though it’s rarely ever empty. It’s also

the perfect place to grab a coffee and a

pastry and soak up some of London’s rare

sunshine. Soho Square is not only pretty

but also historically significant. It dates

back from the late 17th century, and there’s

a picturesque black-and-white Tudor house

right in the middle of the square.

EVENING

THE LONDON CABERET CLUB

BLOOMSBURY, LONDON

As the sun goes down, we headed off to enjoy a night of stunning performances at The London

Cabaret Show in the Bloomsbury Ballroom, complete with a gourmet three-course dinner and firstclass

facilities.

With a range of shows throughout the year,

you’re guaranteed a London night out like

no other. Billing itself as a Bond-inspired

dining and entertainment experience,

we experienced London Never Dies, an

immersive cabaret night set to music from

the iconic film franchise. All the best songs

are there, from Adele to Jack White to

Tina Turner. The action takes place in the

beautiful Art Deco ballroom and there are

various food and drink price options for the

evening.

The Show

The show programme consisted of very

sexy dancers and singers who pay tribute

to the Bond themes. Performances were

superb and the speed of the action-packed

night was partnered beautifully by the

delivery of the great food.

The evening concludes with an after-party

where you can dance the night away from

your table in the ballroom. If you’re after

an evening of spangles and sequins and

glamorous, escapist fun then the London

Cabaret Club is the place to go. “

Our Verdict

A delicious departure from the banalities of everyday life,

London Never Dies is ultimate escapism, even if you did

arrive on a red bus, rather than an Aston Martin.

ST ANDREWS,

SCOTLAND

Home to the

University of St

Andrews, the third

oldest university in the

English-speaking world and

boasting a famous list of

alumni — including Prince

William and Catherine,

Duchess of Cambridge. But

St Andrews is more than

just a historic university

town, it’s also a magnificent

place to take your camera.

Even the town centre

with its cobbled streets,

beautiful fountains and local

landmarks like the West Port

is worth capturing. But there

are a few idyllic locations

you must add to your picture

collection.

Whilst mostly in ruins,

the medieval St Andrews

Castle that oversees the

coastline still invites a lot

of fascination and awe,

especially when you check

out the stunning views

towards the sea. Despite

the castle’s small size,

the photo opportunities

are monumental (if you’ll

pardon the pun).

Similarly, the St Andrews

Cathedral is another

collection of ruins that make

for striking photographs.

Once upon a time, it was

Scotland’s largest building.

The tall square tower, part

of the old church before it

was a cathedral, was built to

hold the relics of St Andrew

himself. It’s a popular spot

for photography, and you’ll

have to snap it for yourself to

see why.

Also recommended is a visit

to the windswept West Sands

beach. No matter the time

of day, you’ll find a wealth

of fantastic opportunities for

a pretty picture. But you’ll

really want to be there for

sunset or sunrise — that’s

where the most magical

shots are captured. There’s

also Kingsbarns in the

East Neuk of Fife, situated

around 6.5 miles outside of

St Andrews. As well as a

hot golfing spot, Kingsbarns

is a great location to stroll

through the golden sandy

shores with your camera

close to hand.

LAKE DISTRICT,

NORTH WEST ENGLAND

The Lake District is

the most popular and

largest national park in

England, covering more than

1,400 square miles. Sometimes

referred to as Lakeland, it’s

home to some of the most scenic

landscapes in Britain. Aside

from its gorgeous lakes, there

are also some awe-inspiring

mountains and dazzling forests.

With such breath-taking scenery

and extraordinary light quality,

the Lake District might just be

the most photogenic region in

the UK. Wherever you stop,

you’re bound to find something

beautiful to capture. However,

there are a few snappable spots

we must highlight.

Located beside Keswick is

an enchanting lake called

Derwentwater. On the water are

numerous little islands that add

character to any photo you take.

But whether you walk along the

Derwent Piers or hop on a boat,

the picture potentials are vast.

Early mornings usually offer the

best atmospheric conditions,

but you’ll collect an array of

interesting shots if you make a

day of it.

The Windermere lake is another

stunning location to expand

your photo album. At 10.5 miles

long, one mile wide and 220 feet

deep, it is the largest natural lake

in England. The South Lakes

valleys around Windermere

are equally photographable

and consist of narrow winding

lanes, which are bounded with

hedgerows and dry-stone walls.

They’re also surrounded by

wondrous woodlands. Whilst

autumn is generally considered

the most ideal time of year to

capture the most wonderful

natural colours in the forests,

winter offers its own charming

photo opportunities.

Another lake you don’t want

to miss out on snapping is

Ullswater, which is surrounded

by the most amazing mountain

scenery with some gentler but

equally picturesque hills further

north. At 7.5 miles long, it’s the

second largest lake in England

and the third deepest at 250 feet.

But it’s not just the lake itself

that demands your camera, it’s

the surrounding landmarks,

too. This includes the villages

Glenridding and Pooley Bridge,

the fells above Martindale and

the Kirkstone Pass.

YORKSHIRE DALES,

NORTH EAST ENGLAND

Covering 841 square

miles, the Yorkshire

Dales National Park has

limitless potential for capturing

unique photographs. From

windswept landscapes and

fantastic waterfalls to tranquil

valleys and fascinating coves.

The array of moods and colours

are perfect no matter what level

of photographer you are or what

time of year you visit. Wherever

you find yourself in the Dales,

you’ll find an irresistible picture.

There are, however, some top

spots you must check out.

All the Dales’ waterfalls are

undoubtedly beautiful, but a

couple of particular note are the

West Burton Falls and Janet’s

Foss. The former is quite a nice

shady spot often called the

Cauldron Falls due to its striking

plunge pool. To convince you

of its allure, the artist J.M.W.

Turner picked this spot for one

of his paintings. Furthermore,

the white-breasted bobbing

dipper and different varieties

of wagtails love to dart into the

water to catch insects. Perhaps

this is your chance for a cool

action shot. Whilst the latter,

Janet’s Foss, is said to be named

after the queen of the fairies who

supposedly lived in a little cave

behind this enchanting waterfall.

The surrounding woodland is

equally idyllic with its spring

carpets of bluebells and wood

garlic.

One of the national park’s

crowning landmarks is the

Gordale Scar and once you’ve

captured it on film you’ll never

forget why. This incredible

hidden gorge has impressed

visitors for hundreds of years

and inspired many works from

famous artists and writers. This

impressive natural feature was

formed thanks to successive

Ice Ages carving it deeper and

deeper over thousands of years

into the awe-inspiring gorge we

see today. The water that flows

over the waterfalls at the heart

of the ravine is rich in dissolved

limestone and has resulted in

mossy rocks creating a soft tufa

screen that is a gorgeous feature

at Gordale. Both the Scar and

Janet’s Foss also make up part of

the “Malham Landscape Trail”

that is full of photo-worthy

hotspots.

Several high roads and passes

offer jaw-dropping views of the

surrounding valleys and fells,

but you’ll get the most enviable

shots from Buttertubs Pass. This

road crosses the high moorland

between Wensleydale and

Swaledale, the latter of which

is a must-visit for stunning

pics. At the heart of Swaledale

is the River Swale, which

flows through traditional hay

meadows, which dazzle with

wildflowers in the summer but

is still charming in the colder

seasons. The exquisite pattern of

field walls, barns and meadows

is so special to Swaledale that

highly snap-worthy spots like

Muker Meadows have been

given special protection.

SNOWDONIA,

WALES

You’ll have heard of

Mount Snowdon, the

highest mountain in

the UK outside of the Scottish

Highlands. Standing at 3,560 feet

tall, the vast range of potential

shots of the gorgeous landscapes

makes this one of the most

enviable photography spots in

Britain. What you might not

know is the numerous other

snappable spots the Snowdonia

National Park has to offer. There

are nine mountain ranges,

fifteen peaks above 3,000 feet

and twenty-three miles of

sweeping coastline. Snowdonia

is a beautiful backdrop to a

rich history and heritage that

encompasses stone monuments

and medieval castles. It’s also

home to an incredible diversity

of fauna and flora, including

the rare Lili’r Wyddfa—more

commonly known as the

Snowdon Lily—found only at

the highest peaks. Wherever

you go, you’ll find plenty of

places to stop for a picture.

However, there are a few specific

locations that will elevate your

photography.

The hills that surround the

Mawddach Estuary have awed

visitors for years and years.

The views here are utterly

bewitching, from the wooded

hillsides to where the River

Mawddach meets the sea. It’s

a superb location to get plenty

of photographs to wow your

friends and family.

Then there’s the mountain

Cadair Idris situated at the

southern end of the national

park, which overlooks possibly

the most photographed lakes in

all of Snowdonia. Translating to

“chair or Idris” it is said that Idris

the Giant of Welsh mythology

used the mountain peaks as

a place of rest to stargaze. It’s

certainly an ideal spot for it.

Also, nearby is the peaceful

valley of Dysinni, which we

recommend capturing from the

striking Bird Rock.

We also couldn’t overlook

the Rhinog Mountains, often

quoted as Snowdonia’s best-kept

secret. To find this landscape,

you’ll need to descend the

tallest peak. Only the most

dedicated hikers willing to put

in a full day’s journey will have

this opportunity, hence why

it looks unexplored. But this

means you’ll likely find it free

of crowds and the untamed

Rhinogs promise the chance to

snap pictures few will have ever

captured. Plus, it also passes the

navy-blue lake of Llyn Hywel

and further in the distance you

might see the Irish Sea if it’s a

clear day. Whilst it’s not a route

for the faint of heart, those who

manage it will be rewarded with

some of the best scenic views

Snowdonia has to photograph.

DURDLE DOOR,

SOUTH WEST ENGLAND

Situated on the Dorset

Coast, Durdle Door

is arguably one of the

most famous photographable

destinations in the UK.

The astoundingly beautiful

natural limestone arch

on the Jurassic Coast and

picturesque beach have

attracted photographers

and videographers alike.

Several music videos have

been filmed at Durdle Door,

including “Shout” by Tears

For Fears, “Loverboy” by

Billy Ocean and “Saviour’s

Day” by Cliff Richard. The

surrounding landscapes

have also served as the sets

for scenes in a number of

films, including Nanny

McPhee and the 1967

production of Far From the

Maddening Crowd. It truly is

a photographer’s dream.

We should mention that due

to its fame it can be tricky to

find a spot to get an original

shot. Beloved the world over,

it also invites huge crowds,

so if you’re looking to get

some snaps free of people

then you might want to

research some tips on what

to do — especially if your

plan is to edit them out later.

However, just because it is

overwhelmingly popular

doesn’t mean you should

miss out on the action.

Durdle Door would still

make a super addition to

your photo album and there

are plenty of points from the

cliffsides to the beach that are

worth seeing through a lens.

Furthermore, Durdle Door

is not the only landmark in

the area worthy of shooting.

Less appreciated are the

formidable chalk hills of Bat

Head and the enchanting

Man O’War Bay. Butter Rock

also has its own allure and

has been largely ignored by

many photographers, their

attention instead fixated on

the arch.

Also not to be missed, along

the Jurassic Coast and within

walking distance of Durdle

Door, is the Lulworth Cove

— one of the world’s finest

coves — and Stair Hole

beside it. There’s also an

impressive line of rocks that

offer a photo-worthy view

over Pondfield Cove called

Gad Cliff. Around the cliff

and the cove, you’ll discover

various World War Two

anti-tank structures that

have since become known

as “dragon’s teeth”. So don’t

let Durdle Door’s popularity

dissuade you from seeking

out some original shots.

HYDE PARK,

SOUTH EAST ENGLAND

Hyde Park is arguably

the most popular of

central London’s green

spaces. It spans 350 acres and

contains around 4,000 trees,

which is quite astounding when

you consider that it’s surrounded

by London’s urban sprawl. The

greenery and tree-lined avenues

alone make this one of the

most lens-worthy locations in

London, but what you might

not know is how many pictureperfect

spots there really are.

Curving through the park’s

vibrant gardens is the wondrous

Serpentine Lake. The lake itself

is beautiful, but don’t neglect the

photo opportunities surrounding

it. The gardens are filled with

quaint bandstands, great

trees and neat walkways. The

continuous presence of sculpture

and installation art around the

Serpentine Gallery also demands

your camera’s attention. Simon

Gudgeon’s Lakeside Serenity

sculpture and T.B. Huxley-Jones’

“Joy of Life” fountain are superb

from any angle.

If you want even more natural

beauty then the Rose Garden

is a varicoloured feast for your

lenses, featuring the most

colourful beds of roses in

London. It was designed from

the concept of horns sounding

upon arrival into the park from

Hyde Park Corner. The circular

centre enclosed by the yew

hedge is intended to depict the

mouth of a trumpet or horn,

whilst the seasonal flower beds

are the flaring notes coming out

of the horn. Summer is widely

considered the most ideal time

for the most eye-catching shots,

but there’ll always be something

to shoot no matter the time

of year. Be sure to capture the

fountain statue of Diana the

Huntress, sculpted by the very

first female member of the Royal

British Society of sculptors, Lady

Feodora Gleichen, in 1899.

We must also mention the

breathtaking Italian Gardens.

Whilst they are technically part

of the neighbouring Kensington

Gardens rather than Hyde Park,

if you’re in Hyde Park then you

might as well take a scenic stroll

over there. There’s plenty of

photo-worthy opportunities en

route, and once you arrive you’ll

be greeted by an elaborate mix of

four main basins, featuring the

Portland stone and white marble

Tazza Fountain, central rosettes

carved in Carrara marble and a

collection of stone statues and

urns. Also worth seeking out is

the initials of Queen Victoria

and Prince Albert etched into

one of the Pump House’s walls. If

somehow you’re not convinced

that the garden’s allure is not

worth capturing on film, it’s

been the star location in several

movies, such as Bridget Jones:

The Edge of Reason.

Not just a favourite for sun-seeking British holidaymakers, this beach – with its

soft white sand, clear turquoise waters and rocky tidal pools – is also regarded

by the locals as the best beach in Lanzarote. Located on the south eastern tip of

the island in a protected natural park, Playas de Papagayo has lots going on and a handy

cafébar where you can sample the local cuisine while watching the sunset majestically

behind the mountains in Los Ajaches. There is an admission fee of €3 for vehicles

entering the national park.

Winter Beaches

Majorca

This pretty beach on the west coast of Majorca is one of the island’s hidden gems.

Located down a dusty track through the olive groves just outside the village of Deià,

Cala Deià is a tiny shingle and pebble beach with beautifully clear water and rocky

cliffs that curve around the bay, making it feel quite secret. There are still a few fishermen

from the village who go out at dawn every day to cast their nets from here. And for those

who prefer to stretch their legs, a path leads around to the scenic Sa Pedrisa watchtower.

There’s also a great fish restaurant overlooking the beach.

Winter Beaches

How about having your own beach and staying in a luxury tent on the small and

uninhabited Mogundula Island? It really is one of the most un-spoilt and forgotten

tropical islands in the Quirimbas Archipelago, located just over four miles (7km)

from the northern mainland of Mozambique. There is a perfect reef with small waves on

the seaward side, and a pristine beach, ideal for snorkeling and swimming. The island has

a mangrove lake, coconut tree forests and at low tide you can walk around the island and

explore the caves. rock pools and coral outcrops. The island is home to some of the most unspoilt

and unexplored ecosystems in the Indian Ocean.

Winter Beaches

Fiji

The Yasawas is an archipelago of 90 islands off Fiji’s main island of Viti Levu that

boasts some of the world’s most wonderful beaches. Expect to find miles of classic

bleached sand unmarked by little except coconut husks and the occasional antlers of

bleached driftwood. So fine is the sand, that one stretch – a hop by boat from the Yasawa

Island Resort – is known as ‘’eight month beach’’ because it takes that long, say the

locals, to get all the grains out of your hair. Visitors stay at the Yasawa Island Resort, an

exclusive retreat on one of the most remote and un-spoilt islands of Fiji. Accommodation is

in 18 luxury bungalows among the palms, each just a few steps from one of those wonderful

beaches. Options include picnicking, snorkelling among coral and tropical fish or indulging

in Fiji’s first beachfront spa.

Page 159

The dramatic mountains that drop into the sea here look as if they’d do for a scene from

one of James Bond’s most exotic locations. Anse Chastanet is a perfect beach with

a perfect setting, while Jade Mountain is set high on the hills overlooking St Lucia’s

Pitons UNESCO World Heritage Site, in full view of both the Piti and Gros Piton mountains.

The resorts excellent luxury suites are set in 600 acres of lush forest on the private Anse

Chastanet estate, where all the produce is grown – to organic principles, of course. Expect to

swish into your suite where bedroom, living area and a private infinity pool merge into one

another. There is an abundance of pristine coral reefs virtually surrounding the estate, making

snorkelling and scuba diving a piece of cake.

Winter Beaches

Seychelles

Without doubt this is a ‘’pinch yourself’’ beach setting. No wonder Brad Pitt chose

it for his first honeymoon. Anse Macquereau is one of seven spectacular beaches

where you are unlikely to meet anyone, but will find carefully placed towels and

a cooler of bottled water just when you need one. Privacy is what Frégate Island Private is

all about and your villa and surroundings are designed for total isolation. It is one of the few

places in the world where, should you wish; you can walk along the beach naked without

fear of seeing another person. Over Christmas week there will be a string quartet from the

Kinshasa Symphony playing to guests in the evenings.
