Supporting young people into<br />

employment in West Lothian<br />

West Lothian Council continues to<br />

work alongside partners to tackle<br />

youth unemployment in the area<br />

including work carried out as part<br />

of the Scottish Government’s Young<br />

Person’s Guarantee.<br />

The guarantee aims to ensure<br />

that within two years, everyone<br />

aged between 16 and 24 has the<br />

opportunity of work, education<br />

or training for a minimum of 12<br />

months.<br />

This will positively impact the work<br />

of programmes such as the Steps n2<br />

Work wages subsidy programme,<br />

the council’s Skills Training, Helping<br />

Young People to Engage, and HYPE<br />

programmes which looks to<br />

re-engage young people into<br />

education with a view to helping<br />

them into the workplace.<br />

Tacking youth unemployment remains a key priority for West Lothian Council and its partners.<br />

The additional resources, being provided to West Lothian from the Young Person’s Guarantee, will<br />

provide the ability to increase current capacity and provide additional support for young people<br />

who have found themselves disengaged, unemployed or underemployed.<br />

QUEEN’S PLATINUM JUBILEE<br />

Plans to mark 70 years of service by Her<br />

Majesty, The Queen, on Friday 3 June 2022<br />

have been announced in West Lothian.<br />

West Lothian will be joining other<br />

areas around the UK in lighting a<br />

beacon, with council employees<br />

granted an additional day of<br />

annual leave with permission also<br />

being sought to close schools<br />

and early learning and childcare<br />

establishments on Friday 3 June<br />

2022.<br />

Lawrence Fitzpatrick said: “The<br />

Queen is the UK’s longest serving<br />

monarch, with events being<br />

organised around the world to<br />

mark this incredible landmark.<br />

“The beacon at Beecraigs<br />

Country Park was installed for<br />

the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in<br />

2012 and will be lit along with<br />

beacons throughout the United<br />

Kingdom, Channel Islands, Isle of<br />

Man and UK Overseas Territories<br />

as well as the capital cities of the<br />

Commonwealth countries.”<br />

The council is also progressing an<br />

urban woodland site at Nelson<br />

Park, Armadale in West Lothian as<br />

part of the celebrations.<br />

A submission has also been made<br />

to the Queen’s Green Canopy<br />

regarding designating a suitable<br />

ancient tree in West Lothian to<br />

mark the Platinum Jubilee.<br />

Council joins vehicle scheme designed to help reduce<br />

environmental impact<br />

West Lothian Council is the latest organisation to join the<br />

ECO Stars Fleet Recognition Scheme.<br />

West Lothian Council has now<br />

joined the ECO Stars Fleet<br />

Recognition Scheme with over<br />

400 vehicles registered with the<br />

scheme including several electric<br />

vehicles.<br />

The scheme aims to help fleet<br />

operators improve efficiency,<br />

reduce fuel consumption &<br />

emissions, and make cost savings.<br />

Members are awarded an ECO Star<br />

rating when they first join - ranging<br />

from 1 Star to 5 Stars - based on<br />

an assessment of their current<br />

operational and environmental<br />

performance.<br />

Any fleet of HGVs, buses, coaches,<br />

vans or taxis which is based in or<br />

operates regularly in locations<br />

where there is a local ECO Stars<br />

scheme can join.<br />

Council said: “Acceptance into<br />

the Eco Stars scheme will further<br />

support the council’s roadmap<br />

to decarbonise its fleet, it also<br />

provides us with a benchmark<br />

rating that will be subject to<br />

continual review in the coming<br />

years as the council evolves to<br />

alternatively fuelled vehicles.”<br />

Joining the ECO Stars scheme highlights the councils’ commitment to<br />

improving efficiency and air quality in its operations.<br />
