monastery dominates Montserrat, and its legendary statue
of the Black Madonna still draws faithful pilgrims as it has
since the 12th century. A medieval castle that has been
converted into a luxury hotel looms over Cardona, a town
founded around salt mining. Walking through a former
mine complex and the atmospheric old quarter reveals

Mystical Cappadocia
Sculpted by eons of erosion, Cappadocia presents an
otherworldly landscape of volcanically formed rock
chimneys that looks straight out of a fairytale. It is a sight
to behold, especially from Uçhisar, the highest point. Other
towns such as Derinkuyu were built entirely underground
to protect the ancient inhabitants from invaders. At
Göreme, a vast monastic complex was carved out of the
sheer rock cliffs, an extraordinary setting deemed a
UNESCO World Heritage site. What a contrast to
Istanbul’s sacred Hagia Sophia and opulent Topkapi Palace.
