PITCH Although he hasn’t got a clue about film, François writes reviews for a small local weekly in the Vallée de Joux. Rosa is a well-known critic working for a benchmark-setting daily. A kinky relationship develops between the two of them, leading François to discover the inner workings of desire: desire of a woman, of a critic, and ultimately of his own. SYNOPSIS François and his girlfriend Christine have settled in the thickly wooded and secluded region of the Vallée de Joux. Although he is not a journalist, François contributes to a small local weekly, describing the life of the region’s inhabitants and the films shown at the valley’s only movie theater. Since he is no film critic, he doesn’t know what to make of the films he’s supposed to write up. So he ends up copying word for word the reviews in “Travelling”, a highly specialized review published in Paris and devoted to the seventh art. Very quickly, the cinema becomes his passion, and he sets off for Lausanne to view the press screenings organized for the Lake of Geneva area critics. Here he meets Rosa, a critic for “L’Époque”, a benchmarksetting daily. A kinky relationship develops between the two of them, leading François to discover the inner workings of desire: desire of a woman and of a critic. LIONEL BAIER Lionel Baier was born on 13 December 1975 in Lausanne, into a Swiss family of Polish extraction. From 1992 onwards, he programmed and co-managed the Rex Movie Theatre in Aubonne (Switzerland). Between 1995 and 1999, he studied at the Faculty of Arts at Lausanne University. Since 2002 Lionel Baier has been in charge of the cinema section at ECAL (University of Art and Design, Lausanne). His first two fiction features, “Stupid Boy” and “Stealth”, were internationally distributed in several European countries as well as in the USA, and were also shown at countless festivals around the world. They were warmly received both by the critics and the public. “Another Man” is Lionel Baier’s third fiction feature. DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT I remember seeing Truffaut’s “The Mississipi Mermaid” one evening in the summer of ’88. I was twelve years old. And that night, my parents’ old Phillips TV set really suited my yearnings. It was all there: a double life, masquerade, enigma, car, snow, violence and, above all, the bodies of Catherine Deneuve and Jean-Paul Belmondo. The tense virility of a man shot to convey boyish bashfulness, along a woman with an upright self-assuredness. All of which seemed to meet my own budding desire. That desire is what led me to direct Robin Harsch and Natacha Koutchoumov in “Another Man”. Then came the snow, the car, the fraud, the double life, the sex and the violence. Implicitly, my instructions to my whole little team was to disregard my script and put their heart and soul into acting out every second of it. Lacking any money, we staked our bets on our desire and energy. I have tried to express in images the turmoil that, experienced at age 12, put an end to my childhood for good.
