The Club hasparticipated in Junior WorldChampionships (called WorldAge Groups) since 2013.In 2019, NCAL had its firstgymnast participating in theSenior World Championships.They did not take place in2020, but this year three of thefive SA gymnasts selected for thechampionships were fromNemato.The gymnasts wereSiyabulela Siwa, Liyema Nxoboand Khanyile Mbolekwa.The 2021 TrampolineGymnastics WorldChampionships was held fromNovember 11 to 14 in Baku,Azerbaijan. The NCAL wasappealing to the public tofinancially support the boys torealise their dream of taking parton an international stage.● OctoberThe SA Bodyboarding Champsreturned to Port Alfred on thefirst weekend of October.The event formed part of theAmanzi Challenge.Gale-force winds and roughsurf on the first day made it achallenge for competitors andstinging sand and intermittentrain kept spectators away.After starting at the preferredWest Beach next to the pier,organisers moved thecompetition on the second andthird day, using East and Middle(aka Halfway) Beaches. Thefinal day turned out great andwaves also to the party. All proceeds went toCansa and the Prostate CancerFo u n d a t i o n .● After hosting the PineappleCountry and annual BucoKowieStriders Smash the PineappleRun event for a number of years,the Kowie Striders Running andWalking Club were extremelyexcited to welcome back theparticipants and their families toan event that was challengingand fun.The 27km event saw runnersand walkers racing from the bigPineapple in Bathurst to the PortAlfred Country Club, with mostof the climbing in the first half.The last 5km headed intoPort Alfred where they weregreeted by the beautiful banks ofKowie River. The 10km was afast course in and around PortAlfred, with one steep hill at thehalf-way mark. The top threefinishers in each category wereawarded prizes by donated by anumber of local businesses.● N ove m b e rThe Port Alfred Bowls andCroquet Club hosted a highlysuccessful South AfricanCroquet National Tournamentwith a record 65 players from allover the country.Sadly one of the entrants,Vince Atterbury, was killed in acar accident near George on hisjourney to Port Alfred and aminute’s silence was held on theopening evening.The competition was stiff butenjoyed by all, according to PortAlfred president Roger Darkes.The final game of thetournament, the open singles,was played between two playerswho have represented SA in theworld cup, namely JudithHanekom from Somerset Westand Victor Dladla fromJo h a n n e s b u r g .The competition ended witha prize-giving and the prizeswere handed out by SA Croquetpresident Mike Moore and PortAlfred croquet convenor,N E A R LYFULFILLEDPROMISE:Romans FootballClub came a stepcloser to fulfillingtheir promise ofwinning play-offsfor the ABCMotsepe Leaguefor Dr DM RadueOptometrists,who donatedfootball tracksuitsto the team earlierthis yearFLEET FOOTED: The Buco Smash the Pineapple races saw 230finishers in the 27km run from the Big Pineapple in Bathurst to thePort Alfred Country Club, and 104 finishers in the run 10km run.From left are Marius Schmidt from sponsor Buco, with the 27kmmen’s winners MelikhayaFrans (second), Luyanda Tshangana (first)in a time of 1:27:51 and Andile Motwana (third), and SticksStiglingh of the Kowie Striders host clubNoeline Kirsten.● The foursome of RobHouston, Early Tsolekile,Michael Gidana and Bresby duPreez won the Buco Golf Day atthe Royal Port Alfred Golf Club.They narrowly pippedsecond-placed Ockie Goosen,Gerhardt van der Walt, ChristoBeste and Gareth Voke. Bothteams were levelled on 99points.One of the most popular golfdays on the calendar, this year’sevent was no different, with 131p l aye r s .Prizes were awarded up to10th place, along with lots ofgood-natured ribbing.● DecemberDespite having to cancel mostof the Ndlambe MarathonKenton-on-Sea races at the 11thhour, organiser VuyolwethuNkayi was happy a 5km racewas still held.The 42km, 21km and 10kmraces had to unfortunately becancelled. However, the 5km,commencing and finishing atthe Kenton stadium was a greatsuccess, and won bySinethemba Njingisi, whoreceived a medal and trophy.The second and third placewinners also walked away witha trophy and medal. Nkayi saidthe other races were cancelledfollowing Eastern ProvinceAthletics’ instruction.
