Call now for reservations.Vermont Students Convene to Declare TheirPriorities for the 2022 Legislative SessionVermont students representing the VermontYouth Lobby and the Vermont StudentAnti-Racism Network united on Zoom anddeclared their priorities for the 2022 legislativesession. In this address they looked backto their calls to action for the state seen in theClimate Congress Declaration and the workof the Vermont Student Anti-Racism Network,and they highlighted the actions theyhave called for that have been left untouched.“Vermont legislators need to implementthe Climate Action Plan, pass the environmentjustice bill, pass anti-racism standardsin education, pass the Bottle Bill and so muchmore,” said Jenna Hirschman, a student fromEssex High School in Chittenden County, representingthe Vermont Youth Lobby.“From the perspective of us young people,there are an array of bills that the legislaturecould and should pass this session related toanti-racism. These include equity in housing,abolition of slavery, removing armed officersfrom schools, prohibiting discrimination, andproviding reform for the criminal justice system,”said Addie Lentzner, a student from ArlingtonMemorial High School in BenningtonCounty, representing the Vermont StudentAnti-Racism Network.Students emphasized their frustration withlack of action on climate in the state legislatureand demanded better leadership fromthe legislature on this issue. “Every new yearI have high hopes. I have little dreams andprayers that things will go right and that I willsee direct and just climate action from legislatorsand decision makers. That people whoare supposed to be dealing with this will startdoing their job. I have had high hopes since Iwas in the third grade and I have seen the momentumbuild, I have seen the beginning ofsolutions, but I have seen far from enough tofulfill my hopes. The time has come to pair myhopes with expectations I’ve decided becauseit is no longer acceptable to me that people areallowed to sit in a position of power and makepromises to me that they don’t keep,” saidDjango Grace, a student at Brattleboro UnionHigh School in Windham County.“True leadership often requires making• • •tough decisions which can be confrontational.To help stop climate change, some tough decisionsare going to have to be made aboutchanging the way Vermonters rely on fossilfuels as part of their everyday lives. Anythingshort of this will fail to stop the climate catastrophecurrently engulfing our planet,” saidWillow Sterling-Proulx, a student at MontpelierHigh School in Washington County.The press conference ended with a call toaction from Pacem School student MiriamSerota-Winston. “So, like so many before us,we are faced with a seemingly insurmountableproblem. Where do we start? We start byspeaking up for our home, for our rights, andfor our future. We start by showing up togetherfor what we believe in: a just, equitable,and safe future for us all. We are here and wehave a chance to fix this. The bills that otherspeakers today have spoken about includeconcrete action to fix this crisis. If we show upand if we work hard, we can take that rapidlydisappearing chance to stop climate changein its tracks. Together we can ensure that notonly is there a future for all of us but that thatfuture is just and equitable. We can make it totomorrow and we can make that tomorrow thebest it can be.”This surely won’t be the last we hear fromthis courageous group of young leaders. Vermontand the state legislature can expect tosee and hear a lot more action from thesegroups throughout the session – they are notgoing away.The Vermont Youth Lobby is launching aFridays for Future program, where every Fridaystudents from across the state will be doinglegislative activism work.“Youth care about these issues and legislatorsneed to as well. That is why we arelaunching a Fridays for the Future YouthLobby program. Every Friday we will havestudents from Vermont doing legislative activismwork.
