Bardwell Amblers Walk Sunday 9 th JanuaryWe started by leaving our cars down a track inIcklingham which is on the Lark Valley Path fromBury to Mildenhall. As we made our way along thetrack we passed a herd of water buffalo in ameadow. Around a bend we reached the RiverLark and crossed it via a footbridge, courtesy of the Water Board, and wewere now on Cavenham Heath a nature reserve managed By English Nature.The reserve is mainly open heath land with heather and bracken along withsmall coppices of silver birch. Going through a gate we walked along astraight track to a fence that borders onto farmland and followed it acrossthe heath to a small wood. A path meandered its way through the trees tobring us to another gate onto the main track. We stopped here for a while tohave a group photo taken and watched a large flock of fieldfare and redwingfly into the trees. Walking on we followed a track back across the heath tothe river. The heath is a good place to see stone curlews and nightjars in thespring and summer and a lot of small wintering birds as well. We retracedour way crossing back over the river and along the track to our cars. The walkwas just on three miles and not quite as muddy as the last one!
