Smith+Nephew’s RI.HIPNAVIGATION - designed tohelp maximize accuracy andreproducibility by deliveringpatient-specific componentalignment for THA – is nowavailable for use on its CORISystem.Last year, a new study concludedthat computer-guided technologyfor THA significantly reduced therisk of revision2 and increasedpatient satisfaction2 when usingSmith+Nephew implants. Certainmarks registered US Patent and TrademarkOffice.New €10 millionoperating theatres openin Bon Secours CorkThe hospital anticipates treating an additional 5,000 patients a yearBon Secours Hospital Cork has opened two new operating theatres,bringing its overall theatre capacity to 11, including one fully-integratedlaparoscopic theatre.Part of a €10 million investment, the Cork hospital has become thefirst hospital in Ireland to install an Olympus operating theatre whichwill provide patients with access to fully integrated, state-of-the-artgeneral surgery procedures, including bariatric surgery to support thefight against the increasing obesity rates across Ireland.The hospital is creating 20 new positions to support the new theatres,including surgeons, anaesthetists, nurses, and theatre support staff.It expects to be able to treat 5,000 extra patients annually through theadditional capacity of the two new theatres.Speaking at the opening, Taoiseach Micheál Martin said, “This is anotherimportant milestone in the ongoing development of health services forpatients living in the region and further evidence of Bon Secours Cork’sinnovation and excellence in healthcare.The additional theatre capacity will greatly benefit people livingacross the Munster region at a time when the pandemic has put suchpressure on our health system.
