Essential Travel Advice
OPEN DATES AND TIMES:
Open dates and times may be subject to change,
and can vary throughout the seasons and day
of week.
Businesses indicating ‘Open Year-Round’
often close at certain times, for example,
during Christmas time. Therefore, we strongly
recommend that you check dates and times
in advance of travel, close to the date of your
planned visit – particularly if you are travelling
distances. You should do this by checking the
website of the attraction, activity or experience
of interest - or give them a call to get the latest
information.
CORE OPERATING TIMES:
The core operating times for many tourism
businesses are typically between 10:00 and
17:00h, with the last entry one hour or more
before closing. Many also operate extended
operating times during the high season when
there are more hours of daylight. It is always best
to check their times in advance of visiting.
BOOKING REQUIREMENTS:
Many attractions, activities, and entertainments,
require advance booking for tours and visits.
Some entertainments and activities also operate
subject to demand. You should always check to
see if booking is required.
convict ships!
Cobh Heritage Centre features an
exhibition of the origins, history &
legacy of Cobh. The Queenstown
Story retraces the steps of the 2.5
million Irish people who emigrated
from Ireland via Cobh on coffin
ships, early steamers and great
ocean liners.
Discover Cobh’s connection with the ill-fated Titanic - Cobh was
her last port of call. A total of 123 passengers embarked at Cobh,
then known as Queenstown. The exhibition relates stories and
artefacts from those on board.
The centre has a genealogical service for those interested in
tracing their Irish Heritage.
Built nearly 600 years ago, Blarney Castle is known for the
famous Blarney Stone that has been a must-see attraction
over the past 200 years! In 2006, the Discovery Channel
listed kissing the Blarney Stone amongst its 99 things to do
before you die!
The Blarney Stone is believed to be one half of the
stone of Scone, which was given by Robert the Bruce to
Cormac McCarthy in 1314 for his support in the Battle of
Bannockburn. World statesmen, literary giants and legends
of the silver screen have joined millions of pilgrims who
climb the tower’s steps to kiss the stone every year in the
hope to receive the ‘Gift of Eloquence’.
In addition to the most famous stone in the world, the
Blarney Castle estate also offers visitors the chance to stroll
one of the country’s most spectacular gardens, enjoy a
picnic by the lake or explore the Rock Close—a mystical
place where majestic yew and oak trees grow around an
ancient druidic settlement. Here, visitors will find an ancient
Dolmen, a Druids Circle, a Witches Kitchen, Fairy Glade,
Wishing Steps, Waterfall and much more. Spend a day
exploring this enchanted and magical wonderland and get a
real sense of Irish history!
BLARNEY CASTLE
GARDENS
The Estate gardens include an Arboretum
surrounding the Castle and House and extend
around the lake. The parkland has unique trees
including maples, southern beech, and giant
western red cedars. Explore the formal gardens with
manicured lawns, rose beds, mixed shrub beds, and
rhododendrons. View the fern garden, the ruin of an
old limekiln, and a Victorian ‘Ice House’.
One of Ireland’s best hidden attractions. The family-owned Toy
Soldier Factory, established in Ireland in 1976, is situated in the
beautiful little village of Kilnamartyra, halfway between Killarney
town and Cork City off the N22. A trip to the visitor centre is
both an educational and fun experience for all the family.
The factory produces hundreds of different moulds that allow
you, the customer, to Make & Paint your own figure from model
soldiers, fairies, seasonal ornaments, chess sets, animals, and
other metal figurines, as many times as you wish. The factory
shop is filled of products made in the factory and are sold at low
prices. You can pick up a casting starter kit for €25 and make
your own figures at home. The keen modeller can choose from
many kits to make chess sets, toy soldiers or wargame figures.
For visitors who prefer to buy hand painted figures, there is a
very large collection.
Figures from JR Tolkien’s books, The Hobbit and The Lord
of the Rings are made on-site. These figures are sold under
the brand Mithril Miniatures—the world’s largest collection
of Tolkien figures. Pick one up for as little as €5. You can also
watch the manufacturing processes. This is one of the last
remaining toy soldier factories in Europe.
Steep yourself in history
Founded by St. Brendan in the 6th century, there are three
churches, two ogham stones and early Christian and medieval
grave slabs on the site.
The earliest building is the Cathedral which dates from the 12th
to the 19th centuries. It has a fine Romanesque west doorway, a
13th century east window and a row of nine lancets in the south
wall.
Two effigies of ecclesiastical figures of late 13th to 14th century
are on view in the South Transept. One of the smaller churches is
an example of late Romanesque and the other, Temple na Griffin,
is a 15th century structure.
