Essential Travel Advice
OPEN DATES AND TIMES:
Open dates and times may be subject to change,
and can vary throughout the seasons and day
of week.
Businesses indicating ‘Open Year-Round’
often close at certain times, for example,
during Christmas time. Therefore, we strongly
recommend that you check dates and times
in advance of travel, close to the date of your
planned visit – particularly if you are travelling
distances. You should do this by checking the
website of the attraction, activity or experience
of interest - or give them a call to get the latest
information.
CORE OPERATING TIMES:
The core operating times for many tourism
businesses are typically between 10:00 and
17:00h, with the last entry one hour or more
before closing. Many also operate extended
operating times during the high season when
there are more hours of daylight. It is always best
to check their times in advance of visiting.
BOOKING REQUIREMENTS:
Many attractions, activities, and entertainments,
require advance booking for tours and visits.
Some entertainments and activities also operate
subject to demand. You should always check to
see if booking is required.
ROSCOMMON
BOYLE ABBEY
Boyle, Co. Roscommon
Impressive Cistercian Monastery
A well preserved Cistercian Monastery founded in the 12th
century. Though mutilated in the 17th & 18th centuries when
it accommodated a military garrison, Boyle Abbey is one of the
most formidable of the early Cistercian foundations in Ireland.
Some of the abbey’s structures are still intact. It was built in a
period of transition between two architectural movements. One
of the arches is in Romanesque style, and the other in Gothic.
Parts of the abbey have been restored including the 16th-century
gatehouse. Restricted access for people with disabilities.
VISITOR CENTRE
Kenagh, Co. Longford
See an Iron Age bog road
The centre interprets an Iron Age bog road that was built in the
year 148 B.C. The oak road is the largest of its kind in Europe.
Similar trackways have been found in Germany, the Netherlands
and Britain; none compare to the trackway at Corlea. It is heavier
than any other prehistoric road in Europe. According to the
experts who excavated Corlea Trackway, it was to allow the
passage of wheeled vehicles. Inside the interpretive centre, an
18m stretch of the preserved trackway is on permanent display
in a hall specially designed to preserve the ancient wooden
structure.
gutted by fire in 1826, the Castle is still an imposing example of
Irish architecture in the early 17th Century. The imposing façade
of the castle faces north and is approached by a long avenue
and formal gardens. The ground floor of the castle is open to the
public and houses an exhibition on the history and restoration
of the building. A virtual reality DVD presentation adds to the
