Obstructive Sleep Apnea
Peter M.
“Doctor Vallianatos provided
me the best dental care!”
Dr. Spyro Vallianatos
D.D.S.
General Dentist
University of Illinois at Chicago, School of Dentistry (1999)
Member: CDS, ADA, ISDS, AGD, HADS
Dr. Spyro graduated from the University of
Illinois College of Dentistry in 1999. Upon
graduation he split his time between Family
Dental Care and another dental practice.
After less than a year, he chose to dedicate himself to
the Family Dental Care group, helping to open the
second office on the East Side in 2001. He has been
practicing at that location since then.
Dr. Spyro prides himself on the family aspect
of dentistry. He treats patients of all ages, often multiple
generations of the same family. His passion for
dentistry is apparent as he will go above and beyond to
help improve the health of all his patients.
Dr. Spyro is married with three children. He
enjoys playing soccer and coaching his children’s
sports teams.
Obstructive sleep apnea is a potentially
serious sleep disorder. It causes breathing
to repeatedly stop and start during
sleep. This type of apnea occurs when
your throat muscles intermittently relax and
block your airway during sleep. A noticeable sign
of obstructive sleep apnea is snoring.
Treatments for obstructive sleep apnea are
available. One treatment involes using a device
that keeps your airway open while you sleep.
Another option is a mouthpiece to thrust your jaw
forward during sleep.
There are many signs and systems that
may indicate a patient has obstructive sleep apnea.
Some of these include excessive daytime sleepiness,
loud snoring, breathing cessation during
sleep, abrupt awakenings accompanied by gasping
or choking, dry mouth, morning headache, highblood
pressure, and nighttime sweating.
Some patients with sleep apnea need to
use a CPAP machine (Continuous Positive Airway
Pressure)but do not always work for them. The
great news is dentists can now treat sleep apnea.
Studies have shown that oral dental appliances
are effective, safe, and a simple treatment
option for sufferers of mild to moderate obstructive
sleep apnea.
Dr. Spyro Valliantos has treated many
patients who have long suffered from sleep apnea.
He has trained extensively in dental sleep medicine
for the benefit of his patients.
Further, dental appliances for sleep apnea
are most likely covered by the patient’s medical insurance.
