Swords RFC Swords RFC was previously known as Aer Lingus, and later ALSAA RFC, but changed to the current name in 2005 for several reasons. The club had stopped representing the airline or the sports complex and as a result had decided to affiliate themselves with the growing town of Swords. The women’s team was established in 2017 after a recruitment drive from tag rugby and the local area. Under the helm of head coach Robert Gilshenan, the senior men’s and women’s teams have gone from strength to strength this season. The women’s team, playing in Division 5 of the Leinster League, have had 15 women make their Swords debut this season. Most of these women had never played rugby before but ably stepped up to the task. The recruitment for the women’s team remains strong and Swords welcome all levels of players with a strong goal to remove or overcome the barriers that women often experience when it comes to playing sports. After narrow losses at the start of the season, the side won their first game of the season before Christmas. The home team put in a serious defensive effort in front of an energising crowd to see out the victory. “I was so delighted I can’t explain!” women’s co-captain Lauren Heffernan said of the win, “The girls have played their hearts out all season and we finally got the result we all were waiting for and working towards.” Fellow co-captain Kate Seery attributes the growth of Swords women’s rugby to the progress made in Ireland and Leinster Women’s rugby: “Every player that has joined the team since our establishment in 2017, whether they have stayed on in rugby or not have contributed to the team we have today. I couldn’t be prouder of how far we have come.” The team’s progression this season gives plenty of encouragement for the next campaign. Playing in Division 7 of the Leinster Metro league, the men’s finished fourth with a record of seven wins and seven losses from their 14 games. The men’s captain, Emmet O’Donnell, commented: “I think it’s been a season of rebirth and constant improvement for the men’s team. Despite a disappointing start to the season results wise, our players have consistently worked hard all season and we are now seeing the results of our hard work.” Emmet added: “For such a small club as ourselves, it isn’t often we challenge for play-offs. It means a lot to the senior players like myself who might not have experienced this level of success too regularly. Hopefully it’s bringing a lot of enjoyment to our other club members and the wider community of Swords.” Recently, the club have had representation at various representative rugby trials, a testimony to the ‘Why not us?’ mantra of the club. Men’s team member, Sean Ryan, impressed at the Irish rugby league trials. Anyone at Swords would tell you that Sean would be well deserving of the green jersey. Additionally, for the first time in the club’s history, six women attended Leinster trials: Caitriona Murphy, Beth Hassan, Amy Coll, Lana McDonald, Ciara Spencer and Maeve Moran. While only Ciara progressed to the second round of trials, these women returned to training, inspired to drive Swords women’s rugby on to future success. Swords RFC are striving to cultivate a community spirit within the club. Instrumental in forming a connection between the men and women’s teams, was commencing each training session as a combined group. From this stemmed post training swims together in the summer, post-match barbecues and, most meaningfully, a home away from home for club members who hail from Brazil, South Africa, the UK and Spain, among other places. Head coach Gilshenan is particularly proud of the growth of the club: “Not only are Swords flying their own town banner but they are bringing other communities together. There is an amazing vibe in the club and it’s all down to the lads and ladies from Swords and the surrounding towns making the effort on and off the pitch.” Swords RFC train every Tuesday and Thursday in the ALSAA Sports Complex, all are welcome! www.leinsterrugby.ie | 43
