Or is it?Actually, business owners have always engaged in the art andscience of networking.Only years ago it didn’t have a name. Business owners wouldget together, shake hands, and smile and chat about themselvesand their businesses. Same thing with “coaching.” I’ve beena sales trainer for 40 years, but it wasn’t until five or six yearsago that someone said, “Milt, you’re not a sales trainer, you’re acoach.” I always thought coaching was leading your kid’s socceror baseball team. Turns out I’ve been a “coach” for 40 years.The buzzwords, however, aren’t important. What counts is whatyou do. And if you’re a business owner looking to grow yourbusiness, then networking should be a way of life for you. It’show you climb the ladder of success. But if you don’t actuallyclimb that ladder, you won’t go anywhere. That’s why it’s callednetworking!While you can network anywhere – I’ve met some really greatclients while eating at the local diner – a good place to begin isby joining a networking group. It’s an excellent way to meet a lotof potential “suspects” who have the potential to become “prospects.”Here you will have a brief opportunity to stand up and talkabout yourself and your business to a group of people who sharethe same goals you do. In essence, you become a 60-second commercial.When given the opportunity to “sell” yourself, be sharpand to the point. Look directly at your audience, not at the groundor up at the ceiling. Make eye contact. It lets your peers know thatyou’re confident.Once your commercial is over, get out in the crowd and talk topeople. Work them like a politician works a crowd. But don’t bepushy; don’t use fancy words – not everyone is a Princeton graduate,and make sure you give a firm handshake. Trust me, you cantell if a person is positive or negative by their handshake. And bea good listener. Listen 80% of the time, talk 20%.But most importantly, don’t make this an “it’s all about me” affair.Remember, you’re not the only person there networking. You’reall in the same boat. When you introduce yourself, don’t handsomeone your business card and immediately tell them what youdo. Show an interest in others – talk about what they do. Ask themquestions about themselves and their families; develop a rapport.In other words, don’t kiss on the first date!You’ll know if there’s any “chemistry” between you. If there is,make arrangements to meet at another time and place to discussyour mutual interests. Why eat lunch by yourself? And alwaysask for a referral.While there’s no harm in speaking to everyone, do target youraudience – seek out people who you know would benefit yourbusiness. But even if you determine there’s nothing worth pursuing,a particular business owner may have other clients that canhelp you. You may speak to a business owner with whom youhave no mutual interest, but you’re also talking to his/her 30 “suspects”who may become “prospects.”As for that business card – make sure it describes what serviceyou are offering. Your card is your billboard. I suggest puttingyour photo on it. If I don’t remember what you do, chances are Iwill toss the card. When you receive someone’s card, don’t wait aweek or three weeks to make contact. Follow-up in a day or two.The key to successful networking is practicing your presentation.Write down your message and key points and practice it overand over. Repetition leads to confidence. Practice in front of yourspouse or friends and neighbors. Practice is especially importantfor people who are terrified to speak in public, which is about99% of the total population. You may even want to consider hiringa coach.There’s also the “likeability factor” to consider. In order to sellyour product or service, you have to sell yourself. And if peoplelike and trust you, they’ll sign that contract. Conversely, if theydon’t like you, you can be selling gold in your pockets, but theywon’t buy.Networking is the best way to build your business. He was an inventor,Statesman, ambassadorAmerican Hero, Postal Inspector,and the starter of the firstvolunteer firefighter regiment inAmerica. In Part 1: Join or Diehe talks about Franklin's earlylife. He ran away from Bostonas a teenager from the Puritanlifestyle. He fled to Philadelphiawhere he became a Quakerand then became a newspaperprinter, eventually becomingan columnist, and writing hismost famous work, Poor Richard'sAlmanac where he wrotehis most famous quotes suchas: Guests, like fish stink after3 days and “Three can keep asecret if two are dead,” and,“Time is money,” and “Early tobed, early to rise, makes a manhealthy wealthy and wise,” andso on. His young son Williamwho became the Royal Governorof New Jersey helped himwith the first lightning experimentsto harness electricity. Theidea of the battery came froma military term with the waycannons were placed. BenjaminFranklin helped invent thelightning rod protecting manybusinesses and churches fromgetting struck by lightning. Hehelped to redesign the stove andcalled it the Franklin Pot BellyStove. Franklin never patentedhis inventions because he wantedto benefit mankind. Franklinlived in London for a short timeand consider himself an Englishmanat first. He wasdismissed from his post as PostmasterGeneral, so he went backto his family in Philadelphia althoughhis Common Law Wife,Deborah Reed had passed away.In Part 2: The American Dr.Franklin became a diplomat forthe United States when theystarted to begin the frameworkfor the Declaration of Independence.At first, many people didnot think that he would evenside with the Patriots becauseof his British influence, but hewas so quiet that John Adamsthought that he was asleep inhis chair at the First ContinentalCongress. Franklin eventuallytried to get Canada on ourside when he was still in GreatBritain, but he heard about theBoston Massacre and the Battlesof Lexington and Concordand Bunker Hill. He heard hisdaughter about what the Britishhad done, and he was outraged.He believed that Americashould become independent ofGreat Britain. One of these oldfriends, Lord Admiral Howetried to negotiate peace beforethe Revolutionary War gotstarted. Howe tried to convinceFranklin with a delegation ofJohn Adams and Mr. Rutledgemet with Lord Admiral Howein order to try to avoid bloodshed.After a long meeting, themen parted with good companybut with no results. BenjaminFranklin signed the Declarationof Independence alongwith the founding fathers, JohnAdams and Thomas Jefferson.He is eventually made ambassadorto France and convincedthe French to bring them in onthe Patriot side. He brings toMarquis De Lafayette who becomesa second son to GeorgeWashington and Barron VonSteuben who trained the AmericanArmy. After a huge victoryat the Battle of Saratoga, theFrench are finally convincedto have an alliance of friendshipand a military aide andgive America exactly what theyneeded in order to defeat theBritish.On the other hand, son Williameventually arrested byAmerican Soldiers and taken toConnecticut, but because of hisdealings with the Loyalists he'seventually sent to the public jailwhere he stayed until he waseventually traded for other prisonersof war.Benjamin Franklin's diplomaticskills helped the Americanswin the American Revolution.After a huge victory at theBattle of Yorktown, the FrenchFleet prevent their escape andthe British are defeated andforced to surrender. The Frenchlove Benjamin Franklin and hestays in France for a long timeand eventually he returns home.Doctor Franklin is present at theTreaty of Paris which officiallyends the Revolutionary War.He returns home a hero and becomesan abolitionist againstslavery.Ken Burns documentaries arealways interesting and his useof photographs, letters and goodchoice of the voice actors whoportrayed historical figures.Mandy Patinkin voiced BenjaminFranklin and reprising hisrole from the Television Miniseriesis Paul Giamatti as JohnAdams, Josh Lucas as WilliamFranklin, and Peter Coyote asthe narrator. This is a good startto finding out about BenjaminFranklin and understanding theman he was and how valuablehe was to our democracy. Thedocumentary is available onPBS and on DVD. I highly recommendthis documentary andit is a good lesson for kids.
