The Thoughts of the Chairman
John J Shanahan,
Chairman
Dear Members,
The AGM of the Club was held on the 18th
January and went relatively smoothly with an
uncontested election of officers to the General
Committee (GC). I am pleased to welcome Karin
we were not able to hold the AGM in the renovated
Second Floor due to the problems I highlighted in a
letter I sent to all Members on 16th January. I will
continue to keep you all updated on the progress of
that project on a regular basis.
The Officers (and Directors) of the Club, in full, are:
Captain’s vs Chairman’s
Annual Challenge Cup Chairman’s team Captains’s team Score
The fourth annual Captains vs Chairman’s Challenge Cup took
place in December. This is an event where the men’s and ladies’
Captains Julian Tanner and Emma Duncombe take on Dave Cross’
Chairman’s team. The game is open to all players who then go into
the pool, a coin toss then decides who will have the first pick with the
loser of the coin toss then getting to pick the next player to play the
number one pick and then has the first pick for the second game and
so on. The team that wins the most matches wins the overall trophy
giving the chairman or the captain annual bragging rights.
After the three previous cups had been won by the Chairman’s select
team the captains would try everything they could to stop the run and
win the tournament for the first time
This year there were sixty-two players in 31 matches who played
on court throughout the afternoon. The captains’ team got off to a
fast start in the tournament with close 3-2 wins for Vinod Harjani
and Nigel Steffensen. Tom Tang and Alyssa Ho also won in their
matches to take the early lead for the captains’ team 5-1.
The chairman’s team then came back to close the gap with wins for
Paul Simons, Alex Chew but chairman himself Dave Cross couldn’t
quite manage to win his game as he lost to Andrew Wood 3-2. After
the first 10 matches played the score was 6-4 to the captain’s team.
In some very close encounters in the next set of matches Jason
Brown managed to beat Jay Kramer 3-2 as did Chris Caves vs
David Robinson. These games helped the captains’ team increase
the lead to 13-6.
With 16 being the magic number of matches to win to gain the trophy
the chairman’s team fought back with some great squash from the
likes of Martin Mrosek, Mike Zimmermann and Phil Head who all
won their matches. With some close games to come it was anyone’s
to win the overall trophy. Carmen Lee for the Captains team beat
Anson Wong in a close 3-2 encounter to get to the magic 16 which
meant a win for the captains’ team in the 4th time of playing.
The overall score was 18-13 to the Captains. The trophy was
presented to captains Julian Tanner and Emma Duncombe by Section
sponsor Ian Burns from St James’s Place. Well done to all who took
part in the matches. A few after squash beverages were enjoyed by
the participants who could rue their missed opportunity of winning or
bask in the glory of their win.
The Chairman will be hoping this was a blip on his record and get
back to winning ways next year.
Robbie Bacon,
Soccer Section
Captain
Hello all,
The Soccer Section has had plenty going on
over the last couple of months. Back at the
start of December our noisy neighbours from
the Singaporean Cricket Club waltzed over
and took back the McPherson trophy with
a deserved 2 – 0 victory at the Hong Kong
Football Club with the Club left to rue the slow
start to the match and a lacklustre second
half performance, while in competitive action
the Club remains in an exceptionally strong
position as the tables below show. On the
Social side, the Soccer Section’s Christmas
Party in Kennedy Town was well represented
Yau Yee League
by all the competitive teams and all had plenty
of fun.
This month we have articles on the 1st Team’s
cup exploits ably supported by some promising
young Colts, the annual Boxing Day match
England v Scotland, the AIA Boxing Day
Festival of Football, the Section’s role and
involvement in a very well known and important
Hong Kong Charity ‘Operation Santa Claus”,
and the Crusader’s tour to Phnom Phen.
I hope you all have a wonderful Chinese New
Year.
England v Scotland
Boxing Day Match
There is a pub outside Chellaston, Derby, called the Bonnie Prince, named
after Charles Edward Stuart (or Bonnie Prince Charlie) who, on his way to
London with the Jacobite Army in December 1745, got as far south as nearby
Swarkstone Bridge before being turned back by local farmers. The uprising occurred
when most of the British Army was on the European continent.
Fast forward exactly 272 years and an England vs Scotland battle of more equal
measure at Sports Road. The 82nd Boxing Day game saw Scotland, under
Scott Semple, try to retain the cup they stole last year, while England under new
management of yours truly looked to repel the marauding invaders. In the first five
minutes, Scotland, sought another audacious start to a campaign, laying siege to
the England goal. Only profligate finishing by McAmro Abbas and fine saves from
Goalkeeper Kee stopped Scotland being 2 or 3-0 up inside the opening quarter.
England finally got into their stride, and playing with no less than 3 father and son
combinations (families Harris, Beattie and Lonergan; Hunters Andy and Charlie
for the Scots) proceeded to use youth coupled with experience to dominate. Niall
Cox’s pace down the right flank was proving a problem for the Scots who conceded
the game’s first penalty. Paul Fitzgerald dispatched for 1-0, only for it to be swiftly
cancelled out by Jamie ‘he never misses’ Milne also from the spot. 1-1.
With the game finely balanced, enter Calvin Harris who proved too hot for the
Scottish defence to handle. If there were defensive questions over his first goal, with
GK Dan Healy getting a hand to his shot, the second was unstoppable and gave
England a slightly flattering 3-1 half-time lead. As if two generals adhering to the
Geneva convention, the managers stuck to a pre-agreed battle plan of playing older,
Vets teams for the second half as youth made way. Unfortunately for Scotland,
England started sharply and despite shocking misses from Mark Grainger and
Simon Page, Richard Le-Gallez found composure to set himself before sliding
past GK Callum Dunn and Terry Harris completed a Harris hat-trick for 5-1.
The contest wasn’t quite over, and Scotland’s best player, Adrian Worth who had
been impressive in midfield all game, danced through the English back line for a
well-deserved goal and manager Semple found space behind enemy lines for 5-3,
the final score. The England team, like Derbyshire farmers of 1745, knew the battle
was already won, the invaders vanquished and sent home ‘tae think again!
Colts help HKFC 1st Team progress
into the Cup Quarter Finals
There is a reason that Lucky Mile or
HKFC 1st Team have not made the Cup
quarter finals at any point over the last
few seasons – the matches are played over
Christmas and New Year, usually requiring the
last minute recruitment of Club stalwarts to help
sides put out a bare XI. This year the timing of
the matches was no different, the first round
was played on the 23rd of December and
the second round on the 31st of December.
This was coupled with the newly introduced
and more stringent registration requirements
requiring the Section to take a new approach
as Tony Hamilton with the support of Colts
manager Bobby Lawson called up five of
the finest available Colts to help the HKFC
1st Team field a side. Callum Beattie, Sam
Pijpers, Charlie Stewart, Hamish Tong,
Conrad Szymanski were those involved over
the two fixtures:
The First Round – Even Tony Hamilton was
away for this fixture leaving assistant John
Casey to marshal the twelve available souls
through the fixture. Goalkeepers notorious in
general for loving a holiday, and with all 1st
team keepers away Robbie Bacon stepped
into nets, while Robert Scott returned from
injury for his first appearance of the season
from the bench. The three Colts all started
showing JC’s unbreakable trust in the
HKFC Junior Soccer set-up and were all on
impressive form as Callum Beattie set the
tone with a couple of commanding headers
and strong forays up from left back. As HKFC
began to dominate proceedings Sam Pijpers
beat his man and whipped in a great cross for
Jerome to nod home and put Club into the lead.
As Sebastian Fielder spread the play with his
trademark Martin Rainer-esque diagonals the
Club capitalised and Remi Depalmas doubled
the Club’s lead before two of the debutants,
Hamish Tong and Sam Pijpers put the gloss on
the result with fine finishes. 4 – 0 the final result
and JC a happy man.
The Second Round – A few players returned
from their Christmas trips but no goalkeepers
and so Robbie Bacon continued in goal. Callum
Beattie continued from the Colts while another
two were introduced, Charlie Stewart starting
centre midfield and Conrad to come off the
bench. A stronger side showed it’s class
as Sammy Micke-Dongo and Jerome De
Clarens each powered home strikes from
outside the box before missing easier chances
inside the box to put the Club in a commanding
lead at half time. Despite a few scares on the
counter, and some profligate finishing by Club,
Remi Depalmas, Albin Brion and a Michael
Hampshire double that was well assisted by
the marauding young Conrad put the game to
bed. Charlie Stewart put in a man of the match
performance and was unlucky that two great
efforts were superbly saved. Cup troubles, what
cup troubles Tony Hamilton Brown was heard
muttering to JC!
U12 keeper looking for the save
U12s in action
Boxing Day –
Festival of Football
New Soccer Section Chairman Stephen
Tew joined a good crowd of spectators
at the 4th Festival of Football at the Club
on Boxing Day. This year saw AIA join as title
sponsors and the players were resplendent in
their new kit. The annual England v Scotland
fixture started proceedings and initially it was a
procession for England, leading 5-1 until two
late goals for Scotland livened up the game
and made for a tense finish. England eventually
prevailed 5-3.
The youth games featured age groups from
Under 10s up to Under 16s, with select teams
from the Hong Kong Junior Football League
(HKJFL) doing battle with each other and local
opposition in the form of Yuen Long Football
Club.
After the England v Scotland game, four Under
11 teams played in a tournament featuring the
best players from the HKJFL competing for the
Junior Challenge Cup. HKFC was represented
along with Asia Pacific Soccer Schools (APSS),
Tai Tam Tigers (TTT), Kowloon Cricket Club
(KCC), Major League Football Association
(MLFA), Brasil Top Skills (BTS), Brazilian Football
Academy (BFA), ACC Japan and Hong Kong
Dragons. In the semi-finals, the Lions overcame
the Tigers 3-0 while the Panthers beat the
Cougars on penalties after a 0-0 draw. The
final saw the Lions win narrowly 1-0 over the
Panthers. Winning coach Ian Riddell was
delighted, as were the boys who won Best
Player awards – Bennett Foote (HKFC), Yuto
Oshiro (Hong Kong Dragons), Dylan Mayooran
(APSS) and Eliot Marschall (BFA).
Next, the U12 boys and U12 girls took to the
field. On Pitch 1, Mark Hayman’s Kowloon
and Islands Team beat a Hong Kong Island
team coached by Martin Haskins 2-0. Byron
Doughty (TTT) and Luke Bannon (MLFA)
were voted Best Players. Over on Pitch 2,
Ian Meekcoms’s Kowloon and Islands team
suffered an agonising penalty defeat after a
thrilling 4-4 draw with Paul Hoy’s Hong Kong
Island Island Girls. Maia-Itakura Prepscius
(ACC Japan) and Claudia Brunner (KCC) were
deserved winners of the Best Player awards.
A large crowd rolled up to watch the next
match between the two HKJFL Under 14 select
teams. The game was played at a high tempo
in the first half and was very close, 2-2 at half
time. However, in the second half, Hong Kong
Island (coached by Mark Grainger) made use
of their full compliment of subs. It proved too
much for Kowloon and Islands, who, despite
playing some good football, lost 7-2 in the
end. The Best Player awards went to Michael
Udebuluzor (APSS) for Hong Kong Island and
Christian Lewis (BTS) for Kowloon and Islands.
U16 teams - HKJFL Select and Yuen Long FC
U12 Girls
The final game was the Under 16 clash
between a HKJFL Select Team and Yuen Long,
who had stepped in at the very last minute
as replacements for South China. The HKJFL
team got off to a very good start and soon went
ahead. They then maintained the upper hand
for most of the game and were too strong,
eventually winning 6-1 after a late consolation
for Yuen Long. The Best Players were Luke
Dow (Hong Kong Dragons) and MA Manching
from Yuen Long.
JUNIOR SOCCER
U12 Coach Mark Shuper giving a team talk
Operation Santa Claus Tournament,
great cause and great day of football
The Operation Santa Claus football
tournament took place on 10th
December 2017 at Stanley Ho Sports
Ground. The Operation Santa Claus event
is something the Soccer Section has been
involved with for a long time and a special event
in that it involves our junior players and senior
members, and helps raise significant money for
local causes.
As is the case every year, this year’s event
comprised junior and senior tournaments.
HKFC once again organised the junior
tournament, this year alongside our coorganisers
and partners at the Hong Kong
Football Association (HKFA). HKFC also entered
a team into the senior tournament. The only
thing missing was the annual Crusaders match,
as the Crusaders were on tour over the same
weekend.
In the Junior Tournament, this year we had a
total of 32 teams competing in the under 9 and
under 12 junior competitions. Each team had
a squad of up to 10 players meaning that 320
kids could enjoy the tournament. These teams
U12 Marco Martin in action
were made up of school teams, local league
teams and teams from the local community
formed to take part.
HKFC, winners of last season’s U9 Cup (there
was only one age group event last year),
decided to not send our first teams for both U9
and U12 tournaments, a decision taken to give
more kids an opportunity to play and given that
our first teams have had plenty of football this
season. We entered a total of 5 teams in U9s
and 4 teams in U12s.
While we left without silverware, our kids
had fun and got to participate in a great
tournament and worthwhile event. Over the
course of the day a total of 80 matches were
played, culminating in 4 finals (Cup, Plate,
Shield and Bowl). In the under 9s the winners
of the Cup were Hong Kong City Boys whilst
FC Banterlona picked up the Cup in the U12s
competition.
In the senior tournament, we entered a team
with a veteran core supplemented with youth
players (ie young players who can run so us
older guys don’t have to!). Two U16 academy
players (Conrad Szymanski and Jesper
Jarlefelt) and one U18 player (Gabriel Ng)
were added to a squad that included Captain
Mark Grainger, Stephen Tew (our Section
Chairman), Gavin McDermott and Nam
Nguyen (who had to play goalie as no one
else wanted to!). We were also fortunate that
first team player Tom Halder was coaching in
the U12 tournament which ran concurrently
– so Tom was able to shuffle back and forth
between two pitches.
After losing our first group match to a strong
Savills side, we won the rest of our group
games and topped our group. We beat
Linklaters in the Cup Semis and then faced
Savills again in the finals, this time winning the
Cup on penalty shootout. Tom Halder was
player of the tournament with his play making
and goals, our youth players played excellent
football and showed great maturity, and the
veteran core held its own with Mark Grainger
providing his usual leadership.
It was a great fun day of football for all. Special
thanks to Brendan Mcgraw, our Junior Soccer
Head Coach for Y7, who once again organised
a first class tournament for the kids. And
special thanks to Mark Grainger who captained
the team to its first Cup trophy in a few years.
Proud to support HKFC
Crusaders Special Soccer
Charity Partner of
the Soccer Section
Tour to Phnom Penh, Cambodia
9th – 10th December 2017
Nigel R Merritt - HKFC Crusaders Head Coach
is our next Tour?” ......
“Can we play another game?”
“When
“Can we play that team again?”
“When are we coming back to Phnom Penh to
play ISF again?”
“Well (said Nigel) ... we need to leave Phnom
Penh first before we can come back!!”
Such was the excitement and enthusiasm for
the 5th HKFC Crusaders Tour to Phnom Penh,
Cambodia, that they wanted to return before
they had left!!
Twelve players from the Club’s community
soccer programme for players of lesser
ability – which meets every Monday during
the season on the Main Pitch from 6pm to
7pm – did the Club proud playing against
seven teams from ISF who were far more agile
and able than our players and yet, the HKFC
Crusaders took the challenges of each game
in their stride.
Jennifer, Gary, Alex, Cheech, Josh, Elaine,
William, Anson, Toby, Melvin, Henry and
Rooney long may your love of the beautiful
game continue.
The seven ISF teams (totalling over eighty
players) came from varying provinces
surrounding Phnom Penh and the camaraderie
developed, within more than four hours of the
tournament, was amazing to witness.
The format of the Sunday tournament was
similar to previous years in that upon arrival at
the ISF Sports Ground and changing into their
tournament (read battle!!) kit and limbering
up – see the images above – there was a
more than two hour drill session, sandwiched
between a group warm up and more than
an hour round robin tournament. How many
goals were scored or even the result of the
game was immaterial when matched against
the high drama on the pitch. Goal celebrations
and crunching tackles, hand shakes and dives
– we had it all.
If we ever need to be reminded of the spirit
of football, don’t watch the Premier League,
watch the HKFC Crusaders !!!
Special thanks go to Barbara Leung, Edwina
Brown, James Penny and Tim Nichols
without who’s assistance and organisational
skills, this tournament would not have
taken place.
Huge thanks must also go to The Prudential
without who’s sponsorship of the HKFC
Crusaders the programme and the tour would
not take place, SUNPAC for their superb travel
arrangement skills and of course to our hosts
ISF for making our trip so enjoyable
and carefree.
As a separate part of the Tour, I (Nigel)
travelled to Phnom Pehn two days in advance
of the HKFC Crusaders to carryout a
continuing (twice yearly visit) capacity building
programme with the ISF Coaches – as part
of his commitment to the ISF Charity whose
football Board he sits on – and to undertake
and compile a monitoring and evaluation (M
and E) report on the ISF Coaches and the 10th
December tournament on behalf of FIFA.
Asked why the tournament was so important
to the HKFC Crusaders, Nigel said “This is the
7th year that the HKFC Crusaders have been
associated with the ISF Charity and the 5th
visit to Phnom Penh to cement a relationship
that can only be witnessed first hand.”
“Whatever is written, only part sums up
the experience”.
The HKFC Crusaders will be in exhibition
action next soccer at the forthcoming HKFC
International 7’s so, if you want spectacle and
drama, excitement and goal celebrations that
many Premier League players could never
replicate, look out for the HKFC Crusaders
when they next strut their stuff on the
Main Pitch.
Howsit Ladies and Gentleman – with Xmas now behind us it is time
to look forward to the business end of the season where every
The Club side put in another great performance last Saturday against
the last few months.
The Drags continue to dominate the second division with another
powerful performance on Saturday racking up 71 points. Raby was only
able to get three tries this time and was helped massively by a huge
push from the bench that came on to really up the ante and drive the
nails into Kowloon’s coffin. Q and the Russian however are not sitting on
their laurels and will continue to demand more from their team as they
get closer to the quarters and semis-finals.
Scorps put on an immense performance and one of the best of the
season yet. Masterfully driven by their pivot Ryan Matthysen who
controlled the game perfectly and gave his pack field position to play
with. The Scorps were strong on defence and aggressive in the pack
which was led by the ever badgering Lewis and the burly Ben Mac.
Skurrzy and Tetley Dave have done a great job in building a great team
both on and off the field and I know the okes will continue to push for
that league title.
The Bulls played against Revolution which was a one way affair with the
final score of 103-12 to Bulls. A massive performance from Roberto
Gualo who was everywhere on the day putting in not only big tackles but
some deft touches too. However for all the points scored, Hone Patrick
was still unable to get his name on the scorecard and the team of the
week remains ever elusive to this hard running 10.
Not only is there still a huge amount of rugby this quarter but there is
also a huge amount of rugby past March including the GFI HKFC 10s,
the Hong Kong Sevens and the annual Taipans game (21 April). All three
events offer a different energy and vibe, yet all three events are musts
to include in your calendar for the year ahead. The GFI HKFC 10s,
undoubtedly the toughest tens tournament in the world is being held
at the Club on the 4th and 5th of April while the Hong Kong sevens is
on the 6th, 7th and 8th of April. Please make sure you get your leave
approved immediately, your pink tickets signed off and stock up on water
and Milk Thistle for the week as this is a sensational few days.
Again to all the old boys, wives and girlfriends, mums and dads, kids
and Alikadoos that have been down to support the rugby teams a huge
thank you from the whole Section as the support has been immense and
is directly related to the success of our teams. To the players, coaches,
physio’s, committee members and everyone else involved behind the
scenes thank you so much for the time and effort you put in week in and
week out it is truly inspiring to see.
The Four Oarsmen
A huge congratulations to the Four Oarsmen, including our very own
Peter Robinson who played at the Club, for crossing the Atlantic
Ocean. Not only did they row the 3,000 miles across the Atlantic Ocean,
unaided, but they did so in a new world record of 29days, 14hours and
34minutes – an immense achievement. Additionally the four Oarsmen
raised a considerable amount of money for MIND and Spinal Research
(a cause close to Peter’s heart having played with the mercurial Ben
Kende). A huge congratulations to Peter and his fellow rowers –
hopefully we will have the opportunity to hear this amazing story in
person one day here in Hong Kong.
Good luck to all the players going forward and see you all in the Sporties.
Penguins, Samurai, YCAC lead
challengers at GFI HKFC 10s
Two-time champions Penguins, three-time
runners-up Samurai International and
twice finalists Tradition YCAC have all
confirmed they will compete at the 33rd GFI
HKFC 10s from 4th-5th April.
The three renowned invitational sides will be
among those looking to dethrone reigning
champions UBB Gavekal who will again be
coached by Matt Clarkin, former captain of
Top 14 club Union Bordeaux Begles, as they
compete at Hong Kong Football Club for a
fourth year.
Plate champions Kir Club Pyrenees of France,
Australia’s King’s College at UQ sponsored by
Strategic Equity Alliance, Scotland’s Projecx
Waterboys and Hong Kong-based Scottish
Exiles will also return after finishing in the top
half of the 16-team competition last April.
Our own Natixis HKFC will play in the event for
the 33rd consecutive year, while Irish Vikings,
A-Trade Overseas Old Boys and Devil’s Own
Shanghai RFC will compete for the 18th, 15th
and seventh time respectively.
Crowd favourites Hunter + Boo East Africans –
made up of internationals from Rwanda, Kenya,
Uganda – will participate for a fourth straight
year in the two-day event, which precedes the
Hong Kong Sevens.
Tournament Director Bill Mason said: “The
early confirmation of most of the event’s leading
sides is testament to how seriously teams
are taking the GFI HKFC 10s, which retains
its reputation as the world’s most prestigious
10-a-side rugby event.
“The increasing professionalism of the teams
and the number of pros and semi-pros
competing requires tremendous organisation
and an increasing amount of sponsorship, so
preparation has been long underway for both
the organisers and the teams. The full lineup,
including at least two new teams, will be
announced soon.”
UBB Gavekal won the Cup for the first time last
April with a primarily Hong Kong-based squad
boosted by four Fiji Sevens backs who played
on the 2016-17 World Rugby Sevens Series.
The Penguins, who lost 10-7 in the final, won
the Cup in 2013 and 2016, while Samurai
return looking to win for the first time after
finishing runners-up in 2010, 2013 and 2016.
Tradition YCAC, a squad traditionally made up
of top New Zealanders, were beaten finalists in
2014 and 2015.
Doddie Weir’s ‘My Name’5 Doddie
Foundation’ appointed official charity
The My Name’5 Doddie Foundation,
created in support of former Scotland
and Lions lock Doddie Weir who is
suffering from Motor Neurone Disease (MND),
has been appointed the Official Charity of this
year’s GFI HKFC 10s.
The 6ft 6in Weir, who won 61 caps from 1990-
2000, shared the news of his condition last
June and the former No.5 is now hoping to
attend the 10-a-side tournament at Hong Kong
Football Club 24 years after competing in it.
In 1994, Weir was 23 when he competed for
Quality Street Gang Exiles along with fellow
Scotland internationals including fullback Gavin
Hastings, flyhalf Gregor Townsend, wing
Kenny Logan, hooker Kenny Milne and prop
Paul Burnell.
Weir played club rugby for Scottish sides
Melrose and Borders either side of seven
seasons with Newcastle Falcons in England,
helping them win the Premiership in 1997-98.
After retiring from competitive rugby, Weir
became a popular commentator and afterdinner
speaker – often sporting a tartan suit
– and is scheduled to appear at a fundraising
dinner during his time in Hong Kong.
The My Name’5 Doddie Foundation was
created last October, before a gala testimonial
dinner was held in Weir’s honour in London the
following month.
The Foundation’s trustees comprise Scotland
legends Scott Hastings, Finlay Calder OBE,
John Jeffrey and Gary Armstrong – fellow
Lions and all part of the 1990 Grand Slamwinning
squad – as well as sports broadcaster
Jill Douglas, Doddie’s wife Kathy Weir and
Stewart Weir, a journalist and broadcaster.
Scott Hastings, Chairman of the Foundation,
said: “Since Doddie shared this devastating
news with us all, the global response has been
incredible and the world rugby community in
particular has offered enormous support. We
believe the Trust can serve as a way of giving
the Weir family practical help while raising the
profile of this degenerative condition.
“Doddie’s aim has always been to assist those
touched by this condition – be it fellow sufferers
or families dealing with the daily consequences
– with basic and practical relief. All contributions
enable Doddie and the trustees to make a
difference to the lives of those coping and
battling with MND.”
David Nazer, Chairman of the GFI HKFC 10s
Organising Committee, said the choice of the
My Name’5 Doddie Foundation as this year’s
Official Charity continued the tournament’s
commitment to organisations linked to
the sport.
“Supporting Doddie Weir’s Foundation is
in keeping with the GFI HKFC 10s’ drive to
support charities with a rugby connection
that we can work with on a long-term basis,
not only through contributions but also with
connections, exposure and promotion,”
Nazer said.
“Last year, the GFI HKFC 10s supported rugbythemed
charities in India and Nepal, both of
which have a long-term connection to Hong
Kong Football Club, and we hope to develop a
similarly lasting relationship with the My Name’5
Doddie Foundation.”
Inaugurated in 1986 to celebrate Hong Kong
Football Club’s centenary, the GFI HKFC 10s
has long attracted the game’s top players
including seven All Blacks who won the 2015
Rugby World Cup – Conrad Smith, Jerome
Kaino (both 2003), Ben Smith, Charlie
Faumuina (both 2008), Beauden Barrett, Sam
Cane (both 2010) and Nehe Milner-Skudder
(2013).
GFI has title sponsored the event since 2006,
while other sponsors and suppliers for 2018
include Natixis (Gold Sponsor), Allied World, BT,
DHL, Q-Net and Taikoo Place (Silver Sponsors),
CBRE and EY (Bronze Sponsors), Grolsch
(Official Beer) and Samurai Sportswear
(Official Apparel).
Mini Rugby News
HKU Sandy Bay Festival,
Round 3 of Kim Lam Cup and
Rounds 2 and 3 Richard Hawkes Cup
Rather belatedly: Happy New Year. Our Minis have participated in
HKU Sandy Bay’s splendid Festival. That was an opportunity for us
to celebrate Integrity. Integrity is central to the fabric of rugby and
is generated through honesty and fair play. Our hosts ensured that there
was honesty and fair play in plenty. Our thanks to HKU.
Our contact years participated, just before Xmas, in the Flying Kukris
Festival whose value passion. Rugby folk have an unbridled passionate
enthusiasm for the game. Rugby generates excitement, emotional
attachment and a sense of belonging to the global rugby family, and
teamwork. Thanks also to FK.
On a sad note, our U6 Head Coach, Mark Tsui, was taken ill before
Christmas. The good news is that after a stay in hospital and recovery
at home, Mark is back to work. Although the doctors have shifted their
diagnosis, it is a “racing certainty” that it was not, as first thought, a
stroke. But this event was a wake-up call: we all need to be aware of the
FAST protocol: the acronym stands for Facial drooping, Arm weakness,
Speech difficulties and Time to call emergency services. Let’s all take a
moment to commit FAST to memory. As part of Club’s rugby family we
wish all the best to Mark, Amy and, their “pocket rocket”, Declan.
Denis Brock, Mini-Rugby Chairman
Under 12 Girls
After some inspired changes to the squad line
up and an increase in intensity and focus during
training, the girls in both FC1 and FC2 put
together their best displays of the season so far.
Despite losing the first game 4:0 to HKU the
FC1 girls rallied themselves to finally pull off a
hard fought 4:3 victory over SKS followed by
two wins in the remaining games to ensure that
they finished second in the group.
In the Plate pool a reinvigorated FC2 team
came out determined to put on a solid
performance having struggled to string together
successive wins in the early part of the season.
The mighty U12G B has been developing well
throughout the season and it was another
opportunity for the players to test themselves.
The Squad decided that it was time to put
“Self Belief” on the pitch and with 4 wins from
4 games, it was a testament to the players
spirit and team play! A massive work rate in
the forwards by Angel Lui, Hannah Cheung
and debutant Lauren Hearder. Great ball
movement by Jessie Hudson and Lizzie
Stanton combined with barn storming runs by
Alysa Dodd and Victoria Herbert delivered
the attack needed to overcome some larger
opposition.
Running in 23 tries and taking a win in all four of
their games meant promotion to the top tier and
the derby match up against FC1... there could
be fireworks!
Andrew Pitter and Pete Hudson
Under 12 Round 2 - FC2A
In round 2, FC2A had a good day overall, with
three wins and a single loss against DB (who
seem to have been on a 100% protein diet for
the last season or two; they are massive).
Our positives included excellent scrummaging,
very good tackling and rucking. Our scrum won
a lot of ball against the head, including against
the heavier DB unit.
Things to work on for us after the round
included kicking, ball distribution (especially
to the outside backs) and thinking as a team
around possession and territory.
We had strong performances from the whole
squad but Declan Warde, Tommaso de
Francisco, Matteo de Bona Bottegal and
Conor Keating stood out.
Nick Mulcahy
Under 12 Round 3- FC3
Although the overall results don’t make great
reading, with just 1 win and 3 losses, the story
of the day is much more positive. A shortage of
players as our first game kicked off saw three
boys from FC2B make up the 12 literally as
the game kicked off. The lack of organisation
showed and our defence was pretty weak, and
we lost the game 4 tries to 1.
As the match finished, it became apparent
that FC2B were even more short of players for
their game which was about to kick off, so six
of the boys from FC3 immediately played for
FC2B. This pattern continued for the next three
matches, with the result that Conrad Lynch
and Jan Corral Barba played five matches
in a row, with four of the other FC3 boys also
playing three or four games back to back. FC3
lost our second and third matches 5-2 and 3-1
respectively, but the boys all battled well and
worked hard for each other.
After a well-earned break, the boys came back
strong and comfortably beat POL/THT 5-2
in the final game. Some of the support and
handing was good to see in this match, with
some elusive running from Sam and Achilles
who combined nicely to score a try that started
back on their own try line.
MINI RUGBY
The way the FC3 boys stepped up and played
for FC2B, in the heat and, in some cases,
against more accomplished players was great
to see. They put the club before themselves,
and I was really impressed with their team spirit.
Conrad and Jan deserve special mention for
the energy and enthusiasm they showed to play
five games back to back. We scored at least
one try in every match and, if we can improve
our defence, we could really start to compete in
our pool.
Chris Hussey
Under 11 Spartans
The Spartans emerged weary but unbeaten
once again from the Sandy Bay tournament
last Sunday. The boys opened up strongly
against the hosts with a tight game punctuated
by Rory’s powerful slicing runs through the
opposition. From the first match the boys were
adding width to their game with Jack, Pietro,
and Dylan all collecting back moves for some
penetrating runs up the wing. This was helped
by Lucas’ consistent delivery from the scrum,
with Dom and Nicky regularly offering ball
runners in the forwards, all of which combined
to lead us to a 2-1 victory.
In the second game, we came up against a
very determined Valley side, and the game was
a tussle. Whilst the Spartans struck first, Valley
were clever, recognising our congested defence,
and ran around us for a couple tries. They were
not able to break away however, given the
rampaging Eliot and his brutal tackles. With
the score level at 2 all, Eliot made yet another
scything tackle, but catching his shoulder
awkwardly, required medical attention. This
resulted in enough of a delay to halt the game,
and the boys had to settle for the draw.
In the third game, Eliot showed his warrior
spirit to get his battered shoulder on the pitch.
Whilst William was a commanding presence
at hooker all day, a swap with Ollie saw us
take one against the head for the first time this
year. Meanwhile Ciaran continued to be the
ultimate all-rounder, switching between forwards
and backs, whilst Nils once again provided
the most savage (but perfectly legal) tackle
of the tournament, not to mention being an
unstoppable juggernaut in attack. The Spartans
ended up running out 5-2 winners in the final
game.
Pete Spizzirri
Under 10 Girls FC2
The U10G FC2 team showed great team spirit
and played very well together, winning 2 out of
the 4 games and scoring plenty of tries in their
second festival of the season, the HKU Sandy
Bay RFC Mini Rugby Festival.
Vincy Chan’s leadership and fight, coupled
with Natasha Header’s boundless energy,
kept their opponents at bay with solid tackles,
consistent rucking and hard running. Both
Alyssa Mok and Karina Farquhar did sterling
work in the scrum and their enthusiasm to stay
on the pitch was a great support to their team.
FC2’s wings were well covered by Candice
Li and Kristy So, with a bunch of good quick
runs up the wing and solid protection out wide.
Vienna Wong made great impact from the
bench showing a clean pair of heals in space
while Lainie Askbrook (stepping up from our
U9Gs) put in a couple of very brave tackles for
the team.
Final mention to Erika Bach and Elie Cox (from
U10G FC1) for helping out with the FC2 squad,
they both played hard and scored nice tries.
Elie scored the try of the day - a full length effort
touching down in the corner!
The U10G FC2 team should be very proud
of themselves for the solid all round play and
camaraderie they displayed both on and off the
pitch. Great work, girls!
Kelly Warde
Under 10 Jaguars
The Jaguars arrived at a sunny Sandy Bay
expecting a warm reception from the hosts, the
travelling Singapore teams and (of course) the
dreaded Valley.....
The FC1s got off to a mixed start, a bit slow
at the breakdown and soft in the tackle, they
were given a torrid time by a much improved
USRC Tigers before eventually running out
3-2 winners thanks to a couple of long range
tries from the flying Nick Keeley. Game 2 was
a stronger performance and a solid result,
prevailing 2-0 against DB Pirates, with the boys
demonstrating much better tackle commitment
and good, low rucking technique. Then the big
game against Valley 2s. The guys were excellent
with a 100mph performance: aggressive at the
U10 Boys Jaguars
breakdown; elusive running; try saving tackles;
result 3-0 victory. Special mention to Ken Bach
whose darting runs and limpet-like tackles were
exemplary – we will miss him next term when
he is in Dubai. As is often the case, after the
excitement came a bit of a lull with a 2-2 draw
against a fired-up Sai Kung Stingrays but overall
a lot of improvement for the boys through the
tournament and we look well placed for the rest
of the season.
FC4’s had a great tournament, really coming
together as a team. Rucking and commitment
to the tackle were key highlights from all players
in each game. After 2 clear wins and a draw
against Sandy Bay, the team were excited and
increasingly confident coming into their final
match against Valley Fort. The team started
strong over-powering them at the breakdown,
with some great individual runs leading to two
early tries. Building on this early momentum they
added another 3 unanswered tries winning 5-0.
Many players played out of their skins during
the day, although Jack Duggan stood out,
having made a number of try-saving tackles and
scoring a great individual try in the final match.
Jeremy Fearnley and Andy Barnett
Under 9 FC6 Tigers B
These guys in the B Teams are showing great
teamwork and pushing to arrive at the next level
which was very encouraging to see. Difficult also
as we will need to move some boys up to the
next level.
Individually, Adrian Ng and Jonathan Law were
the standouts. Adrian was fast and did some
of the best tackles. Whilst the same goes for
Jonathan, he has the edge in that he was more
determined and always went in first in most
messy situations.
William, Ryan and Silas were good runners
with the ball as they did not slow down when
being stopped but barged through. These three
also did not shy away when there was a need
to tackle.
Julian, Captain for the day, was the one to have
the awareness to run up trying to snatch the
ball from the other team after drop kicks. He
led from the front and pushed his teammates
to follow suit. This year is a challenge for Julian
as we have made him captain of this side to
develop his awareness and drive for a team
rather than on his own.
The games started well and a narrow-missed
chance in the dying seconds cost a draw (loss
to TCRC 4-5). They put a lot of effort into the
game and this showed with some very good
driving of the ball forward and some very good
individual tries.
MINI RUGBY
Game 2 and 3 is where they came alive, wins
against USRC (5-3) and VF4 (3-2). Some truly
good rugby for these young lads. Driving over
the ball in the rucks, good clear-out and even,
I might add, some passing out from the ruck.
Two great results and two superb games of
rugby. Individuals to highlight as above, Julien,
Adrian and Jonathon.
Next, a game of two halves’ as they say.
Slipping 2 points down they had to show some
real class to come back. And did they ever,
giving no amount of space to SCAA they played
as a team and drove for 2 points to level the
game, wow what a day for these lads.
Truly a great day for all and as usual Rugby was
the winner.
Robin Zavou
Under 8
The Under 8s were in their element at the Sandy
Bay Festival, with the perfect weather and
playing conditions providing the ideal setting
for the 8 teams to step it up a gear in putting
their well-rehearsed skills to the test. The match
schedule had the two Falcons teams starting
and finishing at different times, resulting in the
formation of 2 distinct teams. Nevertheless,
both teams came away from the tournament
undefeated.
It was particularly pleasing to see the wingers
naturally holding their positions and the
defensive wall being maintained between them,
which paid dividends in the countless turnover
balls. In attack the ball began to take on the
guise of a hot potato, with Toby Hudson’s
frequent offloads being complemented by
Zachary Smith’s Swan Lake-like running
around the opposition; not to mention the
panther-esque reflexes of Hadrian Curreem
through his ball interceptions and resulting tries.
During their last game against Shatin Sha Pei,
Team FC8 were given the added incentive
to earn an ice cream by working together to
get one of their novice, less naturally sporty
team-mates over the line to score. The sheer
grit and determination applied in getting the ball
close enough to the try-line for their comrade to
go over and score them all a frozen treat was
phenomenal to watch and, arguably, produced
some of the team’s best rugby of the day.
With some minor assistance from the referee
(who was just as eager for the team success
in their quest!) the lad did his bit to secure the
ice creams, rounding off a fantastic - if rather
expensive - day!
After the long hot summer a lovely cooler
morning was had by all down at the extremely
well organised and spacious Sandy Bay
tournament. For those less used to the
thermostat heading below 25’c a few of the
HKFC fleece lined hoodies were to be seen
amongst the many supporters and coaches
stood on the pitch side!
So far this season the coaches have been
working hard to move the rugby on from what
started as a rugby orientated play group back
in the U5s into more of a structured game
(occasionally!). These tournaments are both
fun for the children but also serve as a good
opportunity for us to put into practice the efforts
to encourage the kids to “spread out”, “pass”
and “run straight”, which are all cries I am sure
you will have heard countless times during your
Sunday mornings.
Particular mention must go to Naomi who has
come on leaps and bounds this season and
become both very hardworking in attack and
defence. Another impact player who joined us
this season has been Ante who has picked the
game up extremely quickly and is formidable in
his attacking play!
On behalf of all the coaches I would like to thank
the parents for their continued support!
The Sandy Bay Festival was an incredible day
for the HKFC U6 Dragons fielding two teams,
FC1 and FC2. The kids had an amazing day
and while we had huge success, it was all about
having FUN.
FC1 was fortunate enough to win all 4 games
with strong performances from Kieran
O’Conner, Benjamin Reboredo, Alan Bishop
and Sebastiaan Mertens who brought in the
lion share of the points but we also had great
defence from Johann and Birdy. Lastly a big
shout out to Max Dore who delivered his first
ever tackle and try for the Dragons.
FC2: As Coach Ken said, they all had wonderful
games, winning 3 and drawing 1. Ayman and
Armand the dynamic duo did untold damage in
both defence and attack. Their high energy level
had fuelled everyone and motived participation
– Aiden, Joseph, Joshua and Joyce scored
their first try ever in tournament. Our Dragons
had also brought the spirit into tackling and won
almost one turnover in each game.
Everyone played extremely well as a team! It just
goes to show they are all improving each week.
Finally a big thanks to the coach Stacey, Elise
and especially Ken who ran the FC2 squad.
Jose Reboredo
U9/10 Girls tourney in Singapore
What a cracking try! Club down by one try and
have a 5m scrum. Brigid Warde feeds it in and
then scurries around to flick it out to Sophie
Titterington. Sophie runs straight at the pack,
and offloads in the tackle to Lucy Duncan. Lucy
draws two and then offloads to Saidhb Martin.
Saidhb spins a one-hander to Alyssa Mok, then
a quick pass to Alyssa Schoonmaker. We’re
out on the wing now. Alyssa takes the tackle
and then, before hitting the ground, offloads to
Sophie Aranha who tears the defence open like
a packet of crisps and dances her way over.
Awesome! Honestly, you wouldn’t see it on the
telly.
This was Champagne rugby, served up to a
bouncing, yelling sideline by our Club U9/10
MINI RUGBY
Future Hope International 7s (Kolkata, India)
3rd-4th March 2018
In October this year, having successfully
secured an historic judgement from the
Calcutta High Court to grant guardianship to a
single adult for 16 street children, an U15 boys
team, the Future Hope Harlequins, travelled to
Singapore to compete in the TRC Cup. Their
sportsmanship, courage and fast paced playing
style was an inspiration to the other teams
who reciprocated with generous gifts of kit,
trophies and lasting friendships were forged. A
few months have passed and Future Hope are
now planning to reciprocate in appreciation of
the hospitality that they enjoyed from the Asian
rugby community. Future Hope are working
closely with Rugby India and Rugby Asia who
have indicated their availability to provide
technical support and to endorse the event to
promote rugby in the region.
On 3rd-4th March 2018 Future Hope will host
an international 7s festival in Kolkata at the
Howrah Maidan Stadium. Approximately 30
teams (U11-U17 age groups) from across
India as well as SE Asia and Hong Kong have
been invited to take part in the first event
of this kind to be hosted in India. The Hong
Kong Barbarians will be taking an U11 squad
comprised of players from HKFC, Sai Kung
Stingrays, Sandy Bay and Valley Fort (for info
contact denis.brock@yahoo.com).
In addition to the rugby, players and their
families will have the opportunity to visit Kolkata
during the colourful Holi celebrations and a
dinner for all participants will be arranged at the
world famous Tollygunge Club
http://www.tollygungeclub.org/ (affiliations
include HKFC, Tanglin Club and RBSC,
Bangkok) . The Tollygunge Club is the only
Country Club of its kind in India and ranked
amongst the top 20 Clubs of the world. It is
spread over a hundred acres with a Club House
that is over 220 years old. It promises to be an
unforgettable experience.
About Future Hope: Future Hope is a charity
that works to take vulnerable children living
on the streets or slums in Kolkata, India out of
poverty. Now celebrating its 30th anniversary,
Future Hope gives the most needy children in
Kolkata a secure and stable home and a top
quality education. Every day more than 250
boys and girls attend Future Hope’s school and
enjoy a nutritious meal. Half of them live in one
of Future Hope’s seven homes.
Sport and rugby in particular is an important
part of life at Future Hope. In previous years
teams have participated at the prestigious
Rosslyn Park 7s as well as winning All-India
championships earning the respect of their
opponents and establishing a sense of
confidence and pride in their abilities.
Looking ahead Future Hope has acquired
a block of land and are preparing plans to
develop a residential campus to provide
vulnerable children, many of them orphans, with
an opportunity to break the poverty cycle and
contribute positively to society.
Some 80,000 children go missing in India
every year. Future Hope works to change the
lives of destitute children and help them to
become independent, self-supporting members
of society. Former students have gone on to
develop successful careers in the hospitality
industry, IT, financial services and sports
management. Many are married and have
families. Some are living and working overseas.
9-aside winners
Congratulations to the Men’s As who won the
Guru Nanak 9-aside tournament in December.
Men’s F Team
Given that the Fs have had an awesome
influx of junior players this season, we
thought we’d introduce the section to the
oldest member of our squad - David Watt (68)
and the youngest Raphael Wong (15) - which
gives us an age range of 53 years! Raph has
joined the Fs this season along with Taha
Boty, Kailan Sharples, and Long Him Lui, all
products of our juniors programme. The boys
have collectively reduced our squad’s average
age by many a year!
Q. How did you start playing hockey and
when?
Raph: I first started playing hockey when I was
in Year 4. My PE teacher just gave me a hockey
stick and told me to start playing.
David: When I left uni, started a job and got
married. My main sports had been rugby and
rowing and I was looking to play a winter team
game where both I and my new bride (Mel
Watts!) could play and join the same club.
Q. Are there any other hockey nuts in the
family?
Raph: Nope. But a bunch of my younger
cousins paddle for the Canadian national team.
David: None before us. Plenty after. Mel played
Sevenoaks 1s, Kent and East England before
we came to HK. Son Ollie was Sevenoaks
1s, Kent and South England and Club A.
Georgina played Sevenoaks 1 as did No.2
son Toby before defecting to Hampstead amd
Westminster 1s. All England Prem players apart
from me! Now looking out for those skills in the
grandkids!
Q. What pitch surfaces have you played on?
Raph: I’ve only ever played on grass, indoor
and Astroturf. I’ve also played on my Microsoft
surface, but I don’t think that counts...
David: Started on grass in the UK, subkha
(oiled sand) in Dubai, redgra in Sharjah,
rubber, wood indoor and astro. Oh, and once
on a wooden deck on the overnight ferry on
Matchsticks’ tour to Isle of Man.
Q. What’s your crowning hockey moment?
Raph: One time, I tripped over my own
shoelace and lacerated my face on the pitch.
David: I guess captaining HK Grand Masters to
Asia Cup Silver medal in Singapore in 2011 (2-3
final loss to Malaysia).
Q. What else do you like to do apart from
hockey?
Raph: Aside from hockey, I like eating, sleeping
and playing video games. I like to think
that playing hockey makes up for my other
unhealthy hobbies!
David: Loads. Sports-wise, tennis, golf and
watching rugby. Also, travel, films, reading,
especially biographies, music (including singing
with the HK Welsh Choir), working in different
cultures and spending more time with a
growing family.
Q. Who is you favourite F team colleague?
Raph: Everyone on the team is great, but I feel
that our goalkeeper, Jeroen Touw deserves a
special shout-out. He’s made countless saves
this season, and without him, we’d probably be
at the bottom of the league.
David: I go back a long way with some but, of
the new crop, Raphael Wong, ‘cos he enables
me to run less. Seriously, he has great skills and
vision and is a future Club star in the making.
The Men’s Gs –
Pushing for promotion glory
By some cruel twist of fate, a capable and competitive Men’s
G team found themselves relegated last season. So the
challenge for new Skipper, Sam Turvey, was to recruit some
fresh legs to replace departing greats – Michael “The Greek”
Vrontamitis and Colin Terry – and to rekindle the fighting spirit
within what remained a talented and experienced group of
players.
New motors were found in Dan Martin, Dan Billig and Martin
“Bomber” Harris, who have become regular midfield starters this
season. The winning spirit began with a solid victory on the grass
at Recreio, after a surprisingly tough opening couple of games.
Since then, the Gs have lost only once in their last nine matches,
propelling them to third in the table at the season’s half-way point,
and pushing hard for second spot.
The highlight of the first half of the season was a record-breaking (we
assume?) 17-0 thrashing of I44U at Lok Fu. Admittedly, they didn’t start
the game with a full quota of 11, but the Gs were ruthless and produced
three different hat trick heroes on the day, including Guy “Goldensticks”
Higgins who bagged no less than four. Amazingly, this feat was
matched only a couple of weeks later by Geoff “Dataman” Wong
against Elite B – a game the Gs won 7-0.
For all the goals, a run of four straight games without conceding is really
the highlight of our first 12 matches. Like any quality hockey sides, the
relative strength of your defensive set-up is where you actually win or
lose games. The likes of Neil Norman in goal, Ashwin Padgoankar,
Nick Fenn, Vice Captain Wing Wong and Lou Man deserve much of
the credit for the Gs impressive season so far.
So, what does the rest of the season hold in store for the mighty G
strings? While Captain Topsy sadly left his side in mid-January to return
to the UK, a chance for promotion glory stares new skip Dan Billig and
the boys in the face. Carpe diem!
Men’s H Team – Dad’s Army
The “Dad’s Army” of the Men’s Hockey section, The Mighty H’s,
are having a very competitive season with just one catch, we
can’t score goals!! This has resulted in us riding the crest of a
slump with only 1 win and 2 draws, a tragically unfair points haul, after
some great team performances.
The squad is an eclectic mix of ageing superstars, with an average
age of 51, even including our two teenagers and two under 40 ‘youth’
players.
Upfront, Tom “card a game” Young is the hit man with 3 goals from his
trademark static position, ably supported by JP “done my hammy” Gry
and Cyrus “done my back” Law.
In midfield, our new youngsters Jamie Evans and Fraiser Giulianotti
are improving with every game, although both are in awe (…can’t they
run?!) of their fellow midfielders Chris “never knowingly passed” Jones,
Prakash “do yoga man” Kirpalani and Chris “never on time” Giblin.
The defence has been tight and no wonder with the 250 years of
experience on display at any given time. A combination of Walter “it’s
my 55th season” Marthaler, Anthony “one hand” Brophy, Mike “ref,
I know the rules better than you” Evans, Alan “mines a pint” Powrie
and yours truly barking incoherent orders from the back.
Special performance callouts to our keeper David “Cyclops” Taylor,
who is having a great season after multiple eye ops, Andy “I was a D
you know” Kidd, who plays multiple roles for us usually at the same
time, and finally Joel “Little Rocket Man” Chu, fastest man in the Club
over 0.55 meters, stunning in defence.
It’s a big squad so there are too many to mention (sorry lads) but every
week we have 16 signed up, we’re committed on the pitch and we
have a full bar after the game – now that’s what H’s hockey is all about!
Ladies’ Gorgeous G Team
Our gorgeous Gs kicked
off the season on a high,
demolishing Elite B 1–0 and
KCC C 5–0 early on, and setting the
stage for a smashing year ahead. The
new challenge of a higher division
proved to be just what the doctor
ordered, with a couple of humbling
games causing the Gs to rise to the
challenge, evolving into the fierce
competitors they were destined to be,
and winning their last game against
KCC C 3 – 0.
This game included some magnificent
performances from our goal-scoring forwards
– Ashley Man, who can not only smash a
Maccy Ds pre-game but also some fierce
goals through any goalie; Michelle Page, who
once again put points on the board, burning
straight through a sea of defenders in a superb
short corner and Jane Wakeman, who scored
yet another glorious goal. Alongside our star
forwards, our midfielders have also stepped
up their games this season, with their fast feet
burning through the crowds, supported by our
flexible defensive line, who are solid as a rock.
Hats off to our golden goalie Dora Chan who
never misses a beat and even after entering
a higher division she still remains way out of
our league. We welcome two new recruits –
Anthea Murry and Anne McManus – who
have not only settled in magnificently but have
also flourished throughout the season so far.
But never mind the sporting side of hockey,
the Gs are somewhat famous for what they
bring to a party. This was proved once
again when they delivered big time with their
ghoulish presence at the Hockey section
Christmas party. Unfortunately, there was a
touch of sadness to this high when we had
to say goodbye to a Hockey Section legend,
organisational master and creative genius, our
talented captain Isla Hughes who is sailing off
to a land down under in search of didgeridoos
and koala bears not made of chocolate. We
are lucky enough to have been left with her
swan song, creatively composed lyrics which
guided our lit beats as we brought it home on
the Christmas hockey party dance floor. We
hope to make you proud by crushing the rest
of our season, captain Isla. All the best to a
bright future down under!
THE OOGIE BOOGIE SONG
Well, well, well, what have we here?
Sandy Claws, an elf?
Oh, I don’t think so…
HA! You’re the ones that have been ordering
us about all season…
You’re Rachel and Izzy,
G team “coaches”, more like roaches!
“chase the ball, run another lap”
HA! Well, now you’re in our trap!
You were cruel, with all your ‘fitness’
Well, sit back and watch me ‘spit ‘dis’
Oh, our coaches were so mean
Taylor Swift wrote a song bout them!
When you said, ‘we want pom-poms’
There was nothin’ we could do.
I had to write a special chant
In praise of you and you!
(point at Izzy and Rachel)
The other Club spectators,
They watched us with dismay.
And now whenever we want pitch time,
They never let us play.
Oh Izzy, Oh Rachel,
I can’t believe my ears
You remember James the intern,
(point at James)
Our coach from just last year -
We ate him up, and spat him out,
He wets his bed in fear!
But now - an intermission,
We’re going to strut our stuff…
It’s hopeless, you’re finished
I’m sorry but this will hurt…
‘Cause we’re the Ladies G Team
And you are our dessert!
Congratulations
Congratulations to our newlyweds, the
gorgeous Renee Spencer (Ladies’ Gs
and former Ladies’ Captain) and her new
husband Russ Williams, who celebrated
their marriage in January.
HOCKEY
Ladies’ H team (Cubs)
As we hang up our sticks for the winter
break and revel in the Christmas
festivities, the Cubs boast a record only
the Ladies As could match – unbeaten at the
halfway stage. Given the context of the league,
this achievement is rather special because
this all-girl youth team are pitted against
experienced women’s teams on a weekly
basis. Using our youthful exuberance and our
amazing team spirit, the Cubs have gone from
strength to strength and, at this rate, the only
way is up. Turn back the clock to the start
of the season, most of us hadn’t played with
each other in XI-a-side but we gelled together
instantly and now work like a well-oiled
machine. Although we have won every game
so far, it has been a massive learning curve
for all of us because we are facing opponents
who are physically stronger than us. But
that doesn’t stop us playing with a grrrrrrowl
beyond our years!
There have been several outstanding
performances, in particular a couple of girls
who have improved by a mile since the season
started. Hannah Blumberg, Elise Van Hees
and Martina Anglada Calda have truly shown
that putting in the hard work and effort really
shows the results. Brianne Laot in defence
and Sophie Bater in midfield have also
consistently put in outstanding performances.
Overall, the Cubs have scored a whopping 33
goals in the past 10 games. Big thanks to the
coaches, Coby, Chappie and Ken for their
incredible inspiration, guidance and support.
Our highest win to date was 12-0 against
Aquila B and our toughest game was against
HKCC C, winning just 1-0. This really shows
how the team works together against a highly
physical Cricket Club team, demonstrating
the mental and physical toughness needed to
grind out the results.
Jacqueline Chu, 15 (Forward) – “Being in
the Cubs has been a great experience for me
as a junior transitioning into senior hockey.
My game has improved a lot and I am more
confident on the pitch. At first, I was a bit
nervous about playing in the women’s league
as I have only played with adults a few times,
but because of that I have also become more
aggressive as a player (given that older players
generally try to take advantage of younger
players which is what motivates the Cubs
even more to prove them wrong!) Another
reason why the Cubs have been a fantastic
experience is because I already knew some
players coming into the team and I’ve also
made lots of new friends. Being led by great
coaches and our stellar captain Anna Aiello
really helps elevates our performance on the
pitch. Hopefully we will continue smashing our
way through this second half of the season!
Hannah Blumberg, 13 (Defender) – “Joining
the HKFC Cubs team has improved my
hockey as well as helping me become more
confident in myself whilst playing full pitch
matches. The team is undefeated which
boosts confidence and makes the team play
harder for victory. The team members are
great players and friends which creates a nice
atmosphere for the games and training in
general. Joining this team does mean there is
more work but it really pays off. Training is fun
but also serious when it needs to be, thanks
to the coaches. We should have a great year
ahead of us and I am honoured to be part of
the Cubs.”
A big thanks to all the girls and the coaches!
I wish everyone the best of luck for the
rest of the season, and let’s hope we stay
undefeated!
A special mention must go to the Ladies’ Gs,
Netball DSA
Chairperson
Chairwoman’s Report
For most people at HKFC Netball, myself included,
they probably cannot remember a time where Karin
Looram hasn’t been somehow involved with running
the DSA, umpiring or coaching at the highest levels in
both Seniors and Juniors. Karin certainly has done more
than her fair share to drive this great DSA from strength to
strength over the years. And it is now
time to thank Kaz for all of her efforts, as Karin Looram
she has chosen to step away from her
Typhoons coaching role, as of the end
of 2017.
Karin has in recent years been
convinced into coaching one more
season, and then one more season
again, with so much success with four
back-to-back premierships, it was hard
to say no. However, this year she said at the beginning
it would be her last, coaching only until we could find a
replacement, so she could focus on spending more time
with her two sons and husband Sean.
This year also saw Karin return to playing socially again,
with the welcome return of the Monsoons social team! It
has been so nice to be able to watch Kaz play and enjoy
her netball, just as a player without all of the additional
commitments.
I think I can safely say Karin is the most successful coach
the Netball DSA has ever had, with four back-to-back
top division titles a feat that will unlikely never be beaten.
Karin was also the Chairwoman of the Netball DSA for
many years, where she pushed tirelessly to improve
how the DSA operates and to make us the best run
DSA in the Club. Karin’s contribution to juniors and
the development pathways she helped
establish, to educate our youngest nettas
up to the U19s, preparing them for the
transition into seniors cannot be forgotten
either, with many an hour spent coaching
at Fa Hui park and Aberdeen netball
courts. Karin has been instrumental in
getting international guest coaches to visit,
with her Netball connections spreading far
and wide, as well as taking the Club team
on tour to Singapore to play competitive
netball against the Singapore National team.
I am sure there are many other noteworthy contributions
that I have missed, such is the nature of Kaz’s generosity
and passion for netball, however I hope she knows that
we have valued her efforts greatly, and will no doubt try
to convince her to come back next season!!!! To the lady
famous for her statement necklaces and the best jewellery
to grace a netball court, enjoy the extra time with your
family, and you are always welcome back if the baseball
moms get too much!
DSA Netball Xmas Party
This years Netball Xmas party was held in
a Bar in Causeway Bay. Dressed up in the
Ugly Xmas sweater theme, all the teams
enjoyed nibbles and drinks while celebrating a
great first half of the season! Hope everyone had
a refreshing holiday break and are ready to hit
the court strong in the new year!
Looking for
Sponsors
The Netball DSA is looking for sponsors
to enable future growth and development
of the Netball DSA.
Benefits to the sponsoring individual
or company can be discussed with the
Sponsorship Officer. If you are interested,
or know someone who may be interested
in becoming a Netball DSA sponsor,
HKFC vs Harrow International School
Junior Tennis Challenge
The evening of Friday 8th December saw
under 9 and under 12 competitors from
HKFC and Harrow International School take
to the courts for an entree into competitive
tennis. Australasia Tennis Aces (ATA) run the
coaching programmes at the Club and Harrow
so bragging rights were on the line for the
respective coaching teams.
The kids played short timed matches with
scoring and change of serve following a tie
break format with highest score at the bell
winning (draws were decided with a sudden
death point).
In total 52 singles and doubles matches were
played with Club coming out on top 30-22.
More importantly the two teams walked away
from the night having had a great time playing
with and against their friends.
A big thank you to the ATA coaching team and
special mention to Toby Clark for arranging the
evening competition.
Ladies Christmas Social
On Friday 15th December
ATA held its’ annual Ladies
Christmas Social. The morning
was well attended with nine
doubles pairings facing off across
the courts. The matches were
spirited but social and were
played as match tie breaks (i.e.
to 10 points). Halfway through
the event there was a break for
morning tea and coffee and then
it was straight back onto the
court for the deciding matches.
Lots of fun was had by all with
very close matches with the
top 5 positions being decided
by a point. Regarding best
costume 2016 champion Karen
Thorne successfully defended
her title, albeit with new partner
Charlotte Cheung, and she is
fast becoming the Martin Hingis
of tennis costume pairings –
definitely one to watch ;)
Many thanks to Nathan Booth for
his efforts in organising this event.
Deepwater Bay Xmas Gathering 2017
This was the last golf event of the year and is always very popular
with this year being no exception drawing a full compliment of
twenty-seven players.
The format of the day is normal stroke play minus your handicap but with
only four clubs being allowed for each player; a putter and three clubs of
your choice.
Although only a short course, Deepwater Bay is extremely tricky with
plenty of green side bunkers and minuscule greens that are tricky to
read. The key to shooting low in this event is the club selection and to be
accurate and not to find any bunkers.
To keep out the winter chills and to get into the festive mood we all wore
festive Xmas hats with Mike Button taking the best hat competition to
new levels of silliness.
Teams of three players set out to do battle with themselves and the golf
course, over a total of 9 tee times with the last group arriving just in time
for our sumptuous roast Turkey Xmas lunch at 1.30pm. This was as usual
an excellent affair and tremendous value for money.
So down to the winners...
Coming 3rd place on a count back was James Riordan with a nett 61
2nd place was Steve Knight with a nett 60
And this year, Xmas Gathering Champion Heather Deayton with a
fantastic 59
For those of you who would like to know which four clubs Heather
used......... five wood, eight iron, pitching wedge and a putter.
This year we also had prizes for best team score – James McDaid /
Alistair Murray / Don Rider
Nearest to the pin on the second shot on hole 8 – Jonny Brock
Nearest Pin on Hole 12 – Stephen Bottomley
Most Birdies – Team Phil Head / Matt Burke / Tom Hayman
Once again an excellent day out full of festive cheer.
Many thanks to Deepwater Bay for accommodating us and to their F&B
for an excellent lunch.
Hope to see you all in the NY.
Happy golfing.
GOLF EVENTS - 2018 SCHEDULE
(As of 1st January 2018 - Subject to change when required)
Kau Sai Chau
Texas Scramble
We kicked off this year with a fun Texas Scramble event on
KSC South Course which saw four teams of four players
compete against each other.
Texas Scrambles involve 4-person teams, with everyone teeing off
but each succeeding shot is played from the spot of the single best
preceding shot. Team handicaps were total handicaps divided by eight.
The real kicker though, is that each player must play at least 4 drives
which leads to a lot of strategic drive selection taking into account the
relative strengths of each player, how many drives they have already
taken, the lengths of the remaining holes etc etc.
With the ground rules all set, off we went with Jonny Brock, Terence
Mackey, Andrew Perrett and Lina Adrianse teeing off first. Jonny was
designated captain of this group and made a solid start with 5 birdies
on the front 9 holes.
Second to tee off were Myself, Heather Deayton, Bob Lloyd and
Rosemary Hsu, being captained by yours truly. We started off a little
slower with 1 bogey and 1 birdie to come in level par after 9 holes.
Dallas Reid, James Riordan, Willian Tsui and Johnny Lam were next
off under the guidance of their experienced captain Dallas Reid, with
their team notching up 3 birdies in the first 9 holes.
Last but far from least were Tom McColl, Alistair Murray, Scott
Murray and Don Rider who all had a slow start with 2 birdies on the
front 9 but making up for this by sinking 4 birdies on the back 9.
Generally speaking the scores should be well under par for most 4 ball
Texas Scrambles and with all the scores being submitted our event was
no exception.
Coming in 4th place was my team scoring 1 under par for a gross
score 68, nett score 57.
3rd place was team Dallas scoring 4 under par for a gross score 65,
nett score 55.
2nd place on count back was Jonny Brock scoring 5 under par for a
gross score 64, nett score 54.
1st place was Tom McColl’s team scoring 6 under par for a gross score
63, nett score 54.
Nearest pins and longest drives winners were as follows:
NP 2 Terence Mackey NP 5 Phil Head
NP 11 Jonny Brock
NP 16 Tom McColl
LD M 14 Jonny Brock LD W 14 Heather Deayton
What a great and fun start to the 2018 Golf Society golf events.
Our triathletes fared well in both the HK National Duathlon
HKFC Inter-club
Invitational Tournament Launched
Members of six clubs gather together for sportsmanship and friendship.
After months of preparation, the HKFC
Inter-club Invitational Tournament
was finally launched in December
2017. This represents our effort to promote
competitive badminton at the highest level
amongst renowned badminton clubs in Hong
Kong, as well as to strengthen connections
between these clubs and foster friendship
amongst their players. The tournament is
intended to be held annually. It comprises two
seasons of competition each year, namely,
the winter season in November/December
and summer season in May/June. Initially,
six badminton clubs, including HKFC, have
participated in the tournament. The other five
clubs are South China Athletic Association,
Olym Badminton Club, Southern Union
Badminton Club, Chun Fung Badminton
Club and Hong Kong University. These
clubs include some of the winners of open
badminton tournaments in Hong Kong in the
top divisions. As we gain more experience
and confidence in organising the tournament,
more clubs will be invited to take part in
the future.
The 2017/18 tournament kicked off in the
form of a league with its winter season
starting in December 2017, when three
rounds of competition were played on the
first three consecutive Sundays of the month
in the Club’s Sports Hall. The six teams were
divided into three groups by draw in the first
round. The three winning teams then played
round robin to determine the champion and
runners-up of the “Cup Trophy” and the
three losing teams will play similarly for the
“Plate Trophy” in the subsequent rounds
respectively. Each tie in all three rounds
comprised a total of seven matches, namely,
2 Men’s Singles, 1 Women’s Singles, 2
Men’s Doubles, 1 Women’s Doubles and 1
Mixed Doubles, to allow more players from
each team to play. Tournament score was
assigned to each team according to its
position in either the “Cup Trophy” or the
“Plate Trophy”. Scores in the winter season
will be combined with scores in the summer
season to determine the overall winners for
the year.
The HKFC team was lined up with our best
players. In the first round, it comprised
Patrick Leung, Coco Choi, Matthew Wong,
Chun Tin Lam, Leo Ng, Emily Chow, Kevin
So, Mat Dance-Shuker, Peggy Lee, and
Captain Ivan Ho. Our opponent was Olym
Badminton Club (which turned out to be the
strongest team in the tournament, going
on to win the Cup Trophy champion). Our
players performed brilliantly but unfortunately
luck did not seem to be on our side. We lost
by very narrow margins in a couple of critical
games and went down by just three games to
four in the end.
In the second round, our team comprised
Ivan Ho, S C Cheung, Chloe Lam, Chun
Tin Lam, Nora Man, Patrick Leung, Emily
Chow, Leo Ng, Hoey Mok and Ka Leung
Chan. The opponents in this round robin
stage were Chun Fung Badminton Club and
South China Athletic Association. It was a
very close competition, in which our team
played superbly. All three teams managed to
get one win and one loss each. And each tie
ended with a narrow margin of 4 games to 3!
Hence, their positions in the Plate Trophy had
to be determined by counting the aggregate
scores of all games in accordance with the
tournament rules. Unfortunately, with a lower
balance of aggregate game scores we had
to settle for the third place. While the result
for our team in this winter season of the
tournament leaves room for improvement, we
are looking forward to the summer season to
recover the lost ground. More importantly, we
have successfully launched the tournament
and we are most grateful for the support of
the other participating clubs. May this mark
the beginning of good fellowship amongst
our badminton enthusiasts playing the most
popular competitive sport in Hong Kong.
second runner-up in the mixed doubles of 25-29 age
group in the Astec Chiangmai Badminton Sawasdee
Cup in Thailand last November. Nora also won first
runner-up with a non-HKFC player in the women’s
doubles of 25-29 age group. Well done!
