can have serious consequences,<br />

causing our international adventures to run aground.<br />

This booklet is a companion to your Canadian passport. It offers<br />

vital information about:<br />

• your passport, how to protect it, and what to do if it is lost or<br />

stolen;<br />

• how to travel safely and responsibly, steer clear of the<br />

troubles many travellers experience abroad, and deal with<br />

the challenges that may arise; and<br />

• consular services available to Canadians around the world.<br />

It also includes:<br />

• a directory of Canadian government offices abroad and<br />

contact information for Foreign Affairs and International Trade<br />

Canada’s Emergency Operations Centre; and<br />

• an Emergency Contact Card for you to note the coordinates of<br />

the nearest Canadian government office abroad and carry with<br />

you in case you need help.<br />

International Trade Canada is<br />

ready to assist Canadians<br />

travelling, working, studying,<br />

or living abroad. Before you<br />

leave Canada, it is important<br />

to know which services we do<br />

and do not provide and to<br />

realize that not all Canadian<br />

government offices abroad<br />

provide the same services.<br />

The following list includes<br />

some ex amples of consular<br />

services (see travel.gc.ca/<br />

servicesoffered for a more<br />

complete list). The $ symbol<br />

indicates which services are<br />

provided for a fee.<br />

CONSULAR OFFICIALS<br />

IN EMERGENCIES<br />

• Arrange help in a medical<br />

emergency by providing you<br />

with a list of local doctors<br />

and hospitals.<br />

• Arrange for a medical<br />

evacuation if a necessary<br />

treatment is not available<br />

locally ($).<br />

• Provide advice and contact<br />

information on local police<br />

and medical services to<br />

victims of robbery, sexual<br />

assault, or other violence.<br />

• Provide assistance in cases<br />

of missing persons or the<br />

abduction of a child to<br />

another country.<br />
