Morning - From 09.45 Community Walk from the Quarry car park. All welcome.
Meet in the quarry car park from 9.45 aiming to start at 10am. The first part is simply a lap of the quarry works which is even ground and suitable for
all. The second half we will descend into the woods before looping back up to the quarry car park.
Through the woods surfaces can be uneven and suitable footwear will be essential. For the ease of everyone we ask that all dogs are kept on leads
and that everyone has poo bags with them.
The whole walk will take about an hour to complete and feel free to join us for all or part of it.
Midday - Over 60’s (PL33 postcode) Celebration lunch at the Methodist Church. Bookings only.
Evening - 7pm Jazz Concert at St John’s Church with refreshments.

These have been especially made for our Royal Delabole Derby by Alan Wightman who
lives in the village and to who we are very grateful. Thank you Alan.
This is how the race is run -
With two large dice, one to identify which donkey runs and the other to decide the number
of paces on a marked grid. The donkeys are raced until there is an overall winner.
If wet, this will take place in St John’s Church.

We are halfway through the year already, the trees are in full leaf and flowers and
birds are everywhere. Everything is living its best life, growing, flowering, raising
babies in the summer weather, before autumn with its cooler weather and less food
returns. People don’t notice the seasons much, we can keep ourselves warm with
clothes and homes. We can eat the same food all year round. For animals, it’s vital
that they do as much as they can when conditions are good.
The swifts which arrived in May are a very good example. They migrate to Africa in
August, while we still think it’s summer, flying south over France, Spain, then around
the Sahara Desert, over the Congo, finally spending the winter over the plains in
southeast Africa. There they hunt insects over the great herds of zebra, gnu and
antelopes. In spring they start the long journey back to us, to spend only 3 months
here, nesting and raising their chicks. In an average lifetime (5.5 years) a swift will fly
4 million miles. Once a young swift leaves the nest, it will not land on a solid object for
3 years. They do everything in the air except actually nest. Their legs are so short that
they cannot take off from the ground but if uninjured will fly off if held up in the air. The
parents will fly 40-50 miles away from their nest to get food and the chicks are very
unusual in that they can go into a state called torpor to survive until the parents return.
Once fully fledged in early August, the chicks leave the nest and migrate to Africa.
Swifts are fascinating birds, to see them screaming around our buildings is amazingthey
really are a sign that summer is definitely here. It’s even more amazing when you
think that the first swifts were flying around above the last of the dinosaur herds, 65-70
million years ago!
Unfortunately swifts are in very sharp decline, more than 50% drop in numbers in 25
years. No one is exactly sure why; it may be something to do with their migration, it
may be loss of insect life or nest sites. We can’t do a lot about the migration but we
can make sure we don’t block up nest sites and that we put up swift nest boxes if we
can. We are very lucky in this village that we have 2 or 3 buildings that swifts nest in,
maybe we could organise a village scheme to put up swift boxes to make sure they
always have somewhere to nest.

Hello from the Carnival Committee!
Our regular meetings are now underway and we are pleased to say the events for the week are now confirmed – please
see poster.
Our Fairy Queen has been chosen and we are delighted to announce that Summer
Goodman will represent Delabole Carnival 2022 – Good luck Summer and have fun.

Back by popular demand - we will be holding the scarecrow competition again. This
will be open to both residential and business properties, so get your thinking caps on
- let's see what you can come up with! The only rule we have so far is that the
scarecrow must be clearly in view of the pavement for judging.
Don't forget your entries for the carnival itself on Saturday 16 th July 2022 – Let’s come
back bigger and better than ever before.
Health and Safety Notice – Please be aware that the roof to the carnival containers has been painted with
anti-vandalism paint and is due another coating at any time. This will deter people from climbing on the
container as it is unsafe however please be aware that this paint will ruin any clothing that comes into contact
with it. Please make all your family members aware. There will be signage to inform of the above and that we
accept no responsibility for any damage caused from climbing on the containers.
We are also pleased to announce that the fair will be back for the carnival week this year in the usual field next to the
playing field.
It’s all very exciting and we can’t wait to see you all again soon!

By the time this parish magazine is delivered I hope that the new 20 mph zones will have been rolled out across all of
the parishes in the Camelford Network Area, including this and all the other villages in my division.
Previously it has been extremely hard to get 20 mph zones implemented due to the high cost and ongoing maintenance
obligations of installing speed humps and/or speed cushions. However, following a successful campaign by the
20-is-Plenty group, Cornwall Council have decided to trial a sign-only approach in line with the guidelines that
20-is-Plenty have developed.
By and large, all the new 20 zones will encompass most of the current 30 mph zones with some minor exceptions where
the drop in speed requires a staged approach or where the current 30 limits are in an area that is not obviously
residential.
There is a reasonable expectation that by making this the norm across a wide geographical area and with a strong public
awareness campaign and ongoing education and support for Community Speed Watch schemes, it should be enough
to lower the overall speed of traffic in our villages, making them more pedestrian and cycle friendly and generally more
pleasant to live in.
If you are interested in joining or setting up a Community Speed Watch, then please get in touch with me. These are a
really effective way of targeting speeding motorists, and it is sad to note that most of the letters issued, as a result of
being “zapped”, go to local drivers.
The schemes will also be helped by new legislation ensuring the mandatory fitting of speed warning indicators in all new
cars from July. Whilst I have heard that some members of the current Government are against the idea, I can only hope
that Parliament overall continues to see sense on this matter, as the evidence around road and pedestrian safety with
reduced speeds is very strong and this is certainly a change I support.
The other plus side of this approach to 20 zones is that it avoids some of the noise and air quality issues that can arise
from having a series of speed humps in a residential area. The constant speeding up and slowing down of vehicles is
well known to increase emissions and pollution and can be a real nuisance to nearby homes.
Other measures that will help to make the scheme a success are being considered in some villages such as flashing
speed indicators that can be moved between sites - but by far the most effective measure to ensure the success of these
schemes is if every one of us respects the new limits from day one as we drive around in our communities and so begin
to make a cultural change in our area to the benefit of all.

COUNCIL CORNER Delabole Parish Council
The May Parish Council meeting was preceded by the Annual Village meeting which has not occurred in the past two
years due to the Covid pandemic. This event is open to all residents and organisations to discuss and promote their
causes.
This year, there was a short report from the Chair of the Parish Council followed by Cllr. Dominic Fairman, County
Councillor, who congratulated the Parish Council on their first year in office. The police service was represented by
PCSO Dodd who highlighted the projects where the police are working closely with and supporting external
organisations. There were also reports from the new village Youth Group, the Delabole Carnival committee and the
Hospital Car Service who thanked Cllr. Fairman for a donation towards their funds. It was also noted that the Car
Service desperately needs some new volunteer drivers and that despite advertising in the Delabole Slate and on the
Community Facebook there has been little response.
At the Parish Council meeting both the Chair and Vice Chair were re-elected for the next year and the Clerk reported
a busy month of activity including the completion of the first year end accounts. These have been internally audited
and will be submitted to the Annual Governance and Accountability Review (AGAR) after which they will be externally
audited. The final account will be published in due course.
The Parish councillors -
• Were updated on the progress of the Jubilee events.
• Agreed the AGAR statement for the year end figures.
• Discussed the recent vandalism to bins in the King George V playing field.
• Agreed to contact Cornwall Council on behalf of a resident requesting road markings on Pengelly.
• Accepted an invitation to visit the Delabole Fire Brigade for an informative visit.
• Agreed to meet the cost of maintaining the defibrillator sited on Planet Park.
• Agreed to write to Scott Mann regarding the non existence of NHS dentists in our area and also to make this a
priority for the Camelford Community Network to address.
• Agreed to replace the hand washing facilities in the Gents public toilet.
• Discussed the traffic calming scheme although the final report from Cormac has not yet been published. Cllr.
Fairman assured the PC that all comments received had been noted and areas of the scheme have been altered
to accommodate this feedback.
• Agreed to suspend meetings for the months of July and August 2022. During this time the Clerk will be available
as usual and will, if necessary, call an extraordinary PC meeting.

Plans are coming together and being finalised for the lunch on Friday 3rd June and we’ve all got our
jobs to do. Marie and Marj are in charge of the meal, Ann is coordinating the decorations whilst Hilary
has produced knitted flowers for everyone.
On arrival there’ll be a raffle (besides the chicken dinner etc. Sue’s making one of her sought-after
animals) which we’re hoping will cover the cost of the meat and the plan is for guests to make their
way to a table where a quiz awaits to be tackled in groups so that ice-breaking and chatting can take
place if you don’t happen to know each other.
Let’s talk desserts - you may remember that the options were pavlova, cheesecake or fruit salad.
WELL who could have predicted that pavlova would be so tempting!!! Next in the popularity stakes
came cheesecake (just hitting double figures) whilst trailing in at the end … fruit salad. No comments
about healthy eating please - this is a celebration.
To round off the merriment a display of ‘historic’ photos is being organised plus Brenda’s making a
Platinum cake. There’s no specific dress code but if you want to appear in your smartest or in red,
white and blue you’re very welcomed to do so. Our plan is for you to have a good time, make
memories and foster a sense of belonging to a fabulous and friendly community.

Flowers from Bruallen
Never having been terribly keen on the sight of raw meat, I can’t say that in my childhood I was terribly interested in the
shop that is now Flowers from Bruallen, as it was then one of the two butchers in the village. It belonged to Mr Mules,
although quite often one of his employees, Boxer Rowe, would be serving behind the block where the meat was cut up.

I should have taken more notice, as in the early 1900s (ish)
the butchers had belonged to my Granddad Hicks who, as a
young man, had bought the business from Mr. Billy Nute.
The premises was a bit different from now as the entrance
door was at the end of the building, facing the old Co-op.
Apparently from the shop you could go through the partition
to the next part which in those days was the killing house
where bullocks, pigs and sheep would hang with the double
doors wide open to the public - for fresh air. Wouldn’t be
allowed nowadays. This old killing house later became a
garage for the butchery.
Wesley Nute worked for granddad and subsequently bought
the business, taking it back to the Nute family. From then it
passed to William Mules and to Boxer (Ernie) Rowe.
When Tricia Molloy and I were researching village life, for a Flower Festival about Delabole, we spoke to a few older
inhabitants of their memories and Mary John (nee Billing) told us her Mother used to buy her meat from Mr. Mules in
this little shop. She said that he was quite a character and young Mary used to go there with her neighbour to spend
one penny to buy a lump of kidney suet. Apparently she preferred it to sweets!
Mrs Holden also had memories of a close knit community where everyone knew each other and she recalled that during
the war, when food was rationed, one week they had a visitor staying, so she had phoned Mr. Mules and asked if they
could have a little extra meat and she would bring the coupons over. ‘Certainly,’ he replied - adding that he’d seen a
light in their spare room so he’d already put a little extra in their delivery. (Does it remind you of ‘Dad’s Army’?)
To my knowledge, the shop has certainly changed hands a few times since then but the shape has really altered very
little over the years.
I’ll end with a story that my dad, Cyril, would tell of how Wesley Nute used to tie his horse, still between the shafts and
with its feed bag over its head, to the outside wall of the shop. One day Wesley went out and spoke to his horse but
there was no response and he assumed that it was asleep, as it often was. There was no reaction from his second call
so he went over and gave it a slap. The horse fell over - dead. “Well,” said Wesley, “he never did that afore!” HH
A Methodist Minister’s View
The early days of June will be unique for all of us as we celebrate as a nation the Platinum Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth
II. Unique because it has not happened before and is not likely to happen for many years ahead – it is a once in a
lifetime experience for everybody. This Jubilee is being marked with 4 days of special events, even those who are
unable to share in local events will be able to share the televised ones.
Much has been written in preparation for the celebrations in books which are becoming available, and our newspapers
will carry many column inches in the weeks to come. Most of what is written will, no doubt, remind us of how fortunate
we are to have such a monarch as our Queen who is serving the Nation and Commonwealth well and has done so
through the years.
Although being Queen is a privileged position Queen Elizabeth had to deal with family issues perhaps more so than
many of us have and this demonstrates for me her human touch. Dealing with family issues is difficult but with the
pressures of the press and media the matters are even harder to cope with but with her wisdom and grace the Royal
Family life has continued. The Queen, on a number of occasions, has alluded to her Christian faith from which she
draws strength and informs the disposition that she has in life. I was impressed when she stated in a speech back in
February that she has tried to bring to the role of being Queen the fact that she sees herself as being a ‘servant of the
people’. I wonder if she had in mind the words of the apostle Paul in saying that. In writing to the emerging Christian
Church in Philippi – see Philippians 2 verses 5-8 - he commends the servant attitude of Jesus with his humility and
obedience. We have seen these characteristics in our Queen, for which we should be grateful.
It is a long time ago that I saw the phrase ‘On Her Majesty’s Service’ on any communication, it has dropped out of use
in many government departments. When it was in use it created a mutuality in the country and community in that we
served the purposes of the nation as the Queen served us. It becomes a bearing in life to be people serving the needs
of others and seeing life from that perspective. Food for thought as we celebrate the Platinum Jubilee and give thanks
for our Queen’s Service.

And at last, we are here in the summer term with all the opportunities for outdoor learning that the better weather brings
for the children.
Our whole school Value this term is ‘Creativity’ and our Enquiry Question driving the learning in every year group is
‘What dreams have shaped our great visionaries?’
Across the school, children are exploring what it means to be a visionary, a maverick and an independent thinker. Being
a visionary takes many of the learning dispositions from our Toolkit for Intelligent Learning: Resilience, Openmindedness,
Creativity and Risk-Taking, and the children are connecting all these everyday approaches in their learning
to eminent people from our past who have had a real impact on our world today.
Our reception children are learning about Luke Howard – the ‘godfather of clouds’ – who was compelled by his curiosity
to watch the clouds from the earliest age, and who eventually paved the way for modern day meteorology. Our KS1
children are immersed in their study of Leonardo Da Vinci and will be following the development of mankind’s ambition
to conquer the skies through the history of flight…including some very eminent early female pilots.
Our Class 3 children are exploring how great artists have drawn inspiration from nature, have challenged the status quo
and dared to look differently at the world. They will be immersed in the work of Impressionist painter Claude Monet and
learn to look at the world through his eyes. In Class 4, our children will follow the incredible journey of Isambard Kingdom
Brunel from his very earliest days as an apprentice beside his father, to his incredible achievements as a catalyst for

Chairman’s Report...Delabole Slate AGM
I am sure none of us envisaged at our last AGM that we were about to face such an awful situation with the onset of the
Covid virus and of all the problems that it would cause us personally and the disruptions that would affect our daily lives.
During these past two years or so our Slate team has bitten the bullet and done extremely well to produce several
newsletters despite the odds. I would like to thank our editorial team for all they did, monitoring the situation and looking
at and making the best decisions possible in such a volatile time. Marie and the Slate delivery team also did sterling
work and Jonathan Holt was very helpful with the printing. For various reasons some of us could only watch as the
months unfolded.
Also, during lockdown our treasurer Barbara Tyson left the village and The Slate. We are very grateful to Alan Shore
for so ably taking on this role. With Bob Chapman able to collect the ads and the loyalty of our advertisers, The Slate
has survived. Thanks also to Chris Hore for continuing to put the newsletter on the village website.
I was one of the founder members of The Slate and have thoroughly enjoyed working with so many great team members
and villagers over the years. Huge changes have taken place during this time from the days of the manual typewriter,
cutting and pasting by hand, the unreliable Gestetner to our modern professionally produced newsletter of today.
I have decided that it is now time for me to stand down as your chairman and also as a committee member. It has been
a wonderful experience. I wouldn’t change anything and it’s been a privilege to work alongside of you all
I am sure The Delabole Slate will grow from strength to strength, with such a great team of volunteers.

It has been another turbulent 12 months for our Queen. I suspect that few of us will forget the sight of her sitting
masked, isolated and oh so alone at the funeral service for HRH Prince Philip at the height of the Covid pandemic.
She has coped with this most personal of bereavements, family divisions and press intrusion and now at 96 she is
clearly increasingly frail; after 70 years of unstinting service to the nation and the Commonwealth she is having to leave
attendance at key events to other members of the Royal Family.
What has been the source of her remarkable strength over 70 years? In her forward for a book celebrating her 90 th
birthday, her Majesty wrote,
‘In my first Christmas Broadcast in 1952, I asked the people of the Commonwealth and Empire to pray for me as I
prepared to dedicate myself to their service at my Coronation. I have been - and remain - very grateful to you for your
prayers and to God for His steadfast love. I have indeed seen his faithfulness.’
And in her Christmas Broadcast in 2002 she summed-up the source of her strength like this…
‘I know just how much I rely on my faith to guide me through the good times and the bad. Each day is a new beginning.
I know that the only way to live my life is to try to do what is right, to take the long view, to give of my best in all that the
day brings, and to put my trust in God… I draw strength from the message of hope in the Christian gospel.’
As we gather to celebrate this Platinum Jubilee in many different ways, let’s also pause to give thanks for her Majesty
and reflect on how we might draw strength to face tough times.

production of Georges Bizet’s four act opera, Carmen.
Directed by Paul Higgins (of Glyndebourne Festival Opera
and the Royal Opera House). Regent’s Opera are an
established touring opera company, bringing to life the larger
operatic works of the 19th and 20th centuries. Their
performance at St. Endellion will be fully staged and
costumed, with a four member cast including renowned
mezzo soprano Lilly Papaioannou. Join us for a dramatic

day of artistic reflection focusing on their artistic work

John’s memory of the overhanging frontage of Moore’s
includes cigarette machines fixed to the wall opposite
the notice board. There were two slot machines - one for
Wills’ Woodbines and the other for Players’ Weights.
How times have changed!
Tintagel Orpheus Male Voice Choir.
We had a wonderful evening at our Gala Concert for the
International Male Choir Festival at St Petroc’s Church,
Bodmin on 1st May. We were the host choir, with a large
Boys Choir Ensemble from Basel, Switzerland, plus two
Welsh Male Voice Choirs.
Our next engagement is our Platinum Jubilee Concert at
Tintagel Methodist Church on Sunday, 5th June at 7pm.
All welcome.
On Sunday, 19th June, we have a joint concert with the
ever popular Bristol University Madrigal Society, again at
Tintagel Methodist Church, 7pm start.
Enjoy an evening of superb singing from these
enthusiastic youngsters. Again everyone is welcome.
At last, this year we are again able to stage our series of
Summer Concerts on Thursday evenings in Tintagel
Social Hall. The dates for these concerts are: July 14th,
28th. August 11th and 25th. September 8th. All at 8pm.

This year marks the 70th year of HM The Queen’s reign,
her Platinum Jubilee.

village. (Oh yes, it is an E-bike) I took over the
Flagman’s duties when my very good friend Wes Mills
was no longer able to do it, and each time I raise a flag
reminds me of him.
