According to the American 

Lighting Association (ALA), 

proper outdoor lighting is just as 

important for a beautiful landscape as 

a lush lawn, bright flowerbeds, green 

plants and manicured shrubs. 

Jeff Dross, corporate director of lighting 

education and industry trends for 

Kichler Lighting, recently explained 

that homeowners are opening up to 

new ideas with landscape lighting. 

Use Indirect Light 

Dross says the current trend is for 

homeowners to highlight their landscaping 

with indirect lighting, which 

essentially uses a source to reflect the 

light emitted by the light fixture. This 

creates more of an atmospheric tone, 

allowing the light to spread across 

a wall off the side of a house more 

effectively. Indirect light will illuminate 

flower beds, gardens, bushes or other 

decorative landscaping art. Additionally, 

the light will bounce off the ground 

and create a nicely lit walkway around 

flowerbeds. 

The Shift to LEDs 

LED light bulbs are beginning to dominate 

the landscape lighting industry. 

For the majority of homeowners, 

outdoor lights and landscape lighting 

are typically left on longer than other 

home lighting, which makes LEDs the 

more affordable and logical option. 

Additionally, LEDs can be manufactured 

in much smaller sizes, which 

give homeowners more options to use 

them in unique spaces. Dross explains 

that LEDs are so small, they can be 

used as application lighting, as well 

as for aesthetic purposes. Hardscape 

designs are easy to mesh with LEDs, 

because the style creates both a passageway 

lighting source and indirect 

lighting for stone or brick landscapes.

Two significant trends in landscape

The Bureau of Labor Statistics just 

disclosed the most dangerous 

jobs in America, and not only did 

roofers come at No. 6, but take 

a look at some that didn’t even 

make the top 10: 

• Police officers 

• Firefighters 

• Taxi drivers 

• Security guards 

“Some of the results may surprise 

you,” was how Bloomberg 

Business understatedly put it. 

We’ll reveal who did top the list 

with more than three and a half 

times the 36.26 fatalities, per 

100,000 full-time employees, that 

earned roofers their high-ranking 

status. But here’s what those 

deaths should tell all amateurs 

who are thinking of tackling a 

job as big as installing a roof

PREVENT WOOD ROT ON A DECK 

Easily one of wood’s worst enemies, moisture 

contributes to mold growth, deterioration and 

rot. For anyone who owns a deck, this is cause 

for concern. 

Regardless of the material used on a deck’s surface, 

the majority of substructures today are built 

with wood. If not properly protected, that wood can 

show signs of splitting, rotting and decay in as little 

as eight years, based on a survey of more than 100 

builders. 

How to Identify Wood Rot 

• Look for discoloration or a spongy consistency 

that flakes or falls apart when wet. 

• Don’t forget to inspect the ledger board, where 

the deck attaches to the house, as this is a common 

source of deck failure. 

• Use a screwdriver to check if you can easily penetrate 

the wood or break off a sliver of wood 

without splinters. 

• Examine for long sheets of grayish mold or 

darker-looking wood, along with spots or holes 

caused by termites or other wood-eating pests.

When to Repair 

If the damage is minor, you may

DIY wood rot repair: 

1. Remove Rotting Boards 

Use a 5-in-1 rasp, chisel or 

claw hammer to remove 

rotted boards or rotting areas 

of wood. Be careful not 

to damage the surrounding 

wood. 

2. Reinforce Recessed 

Areas 

For boards that cannot be 

easily replaced, use wood 

hardener, filler or epoxy 

to strengthen the affected 

areas. If using a wood filler, 

press it into recesses with a 

putty knife and then shape 

and smooth the filler to 

make it aesthetically pleasing. 

When to Replace 

If the surface or substructure 

are no longer structurally sound, 

it’s time for a new deck. Even if 

the foundation is solid and safe, 

there may be other reasons 

to consider replacing the deck 

boards, such as: 

• The costs of rot repair approach

deck. 

• The aesthetics could use an 

update. With a new deck, 

there is opportunity to freshen 

up everything from the 

color and design to railings, 

lighting and other architectural

wood and galvanized metal and 

helps deck screws and fasteners 

hold longer and stronger for enhanced 

structural integrity.

Seafood-Stuffed 

Salmon Fillets 

INGREDIENTS: 

• 1-1/2 cups cooked long grain rice 

• 1 package (8 ounces) imitation crab meat 

• 2 tablespoons cream cheese, softened 

• 2 tablespoons butter, melted 

• 2 garlic cloves, minced 

• 1/2 teaspoon each dried basil, marjoram, 

oregano, thyme and rosemary, crushed 

• 1/2 teaspoon celery seed, crushed 

• 12 salmon fillets (8 ounces each and 1-1/2 

inches thick) 

• 3 tablespoons olive oil 

• 2 teaspoons dill weed 

• 1-1/2 teaspoons salt 

DIRECTIONS: 

• Preheat oven to 400°. In a large bowl, combine 

rice, crab, cream cheese, butter, garlic, basil, 

marjoram, oregano, thyme, rosemary and 

celery seed. 

• Cut a pocket horizontally in each fillet to 

within 1/2 in. of opposite side. Fill with 

stuffing mixture; secure with toothpicks. Place 

salmon on 2 greased 15x10x1-in. baking pans. 

Brush with oil; sprinkle with dill and salt. 

• Bake 18-22 minutes or until fish just begins 

to flake easily with a fork. Discard toothpicks 

before serving.

Home maintenance. The very 

words might evoke thoughts 

of an entire weekend spent 

laboring at home instead of relaxing 

in it, but that doesn’t always have to 

be the case. 

“Not every home maintenance 

project has to be a large 

undertaking or one that takes up all 

of your free time,” said Christopher 

O’Rourke, Mercury Insurance vice 

president of property claims. “There 

are small weekend projects that can 

save you time, worry and money in 

the long run.” 

Here are six home maintenance 

projects you can do this weekend 

that will save you the headache of 

costly repairs later on. 

Clean Refrigerator Coils 

To keep your refrigerator properly 

working, it’s best to clean the 

coolant coils every six months. 

Coolant coils, which can be located 

on the back or bottom of the 

refrigerator, keep warm air out. 

When the coils are covered with 

dust, dirt or hair they aren’t able to 

release heat efficiently. In turn, the 

coils work harder and longer, using 

more energy and shortening the life 

of the appliance. This might end up 

costing you more in the form of a 

higher energy bill or purchase of a 

new refrigerator. 

Clean your refrigerator coils with 

a vacuum and coil cleaning brush. 

Coil cleaning brushes can be found 

at appliance stores or online for $10 

or less. 


Check Caulking 

Caulking is customary around wet 

areas like bathtubs and sinks to 

keep water from seeping into the 

wall, but it is also used around 

windows and doors to prevent air 

from escaping. 

Check for significant air 

temperature differences near 

windows and walls and use a digital 

thermometer to verify air leaks. 

Make sure to also check areas 

where vents and plumbing fixtures 

meet the outside wall. 

Old caulking can dry out and crack, 

making it vulnerable to air and 

water leaks. If you notice dry or 

cracked caulking, remove as much 

of it as possible and reseal. Caulking 

gun sets that include the sealant, 

scraping and smoothing tool can 

begin at $35 and be found online or 

at your local hardware store. 

Examine The Roof 

The first step of roof inspection is 

to check the inside of your home. 

Look for damp spots or water stains 

on the ceiling or for cracked plaster 

along the wall. These can be signs of 

water damage. 

At ground level do a visual 

examination of your roof’s exterior 

for any cracked or missing shingles. 

Notice if you have to trim back tree 

branches that may make contact 

as they can damage your roof’s 

exterior. If you suspect any type of 

damage, contact an experienced 

roofer who can perform a thorough 

inspection. 

Clean The Gutters 

Gutters are necessary to direct 

water away from your home’s 

foundation. Their exposure to the 

elements means that they need to 

be cleaned and inspected regularly. 

While cleaning out dirt and leaves, 

make sure the gutters are securely 

attached to your house. The weight 

of heavy snowfall, rain and dirt can 

cause gutters to loosen and pull 

away from the home. 

“Gutters that are free of dirt 

and debris will keep rain from 

running down the sides of your 

home and coming in through 

the foundation,” said O’Rourke. 

“Routine maintenance means lower 

homeowner costs by addressing 

small issues before they become 

problematic.” 

Clean Chimney 

Chimneys should be cleaned once 

a year, especially before the first 

fire of the season. Check the inside 

of the chimney to make sure it is 

clear of any debris or small animals 

nesting as these types of blockages 

could cause a fire. Thoroughly 

clear away ash or soot around the 

chimney before the cold weather 

starts. 

Install A Programmable 

Thermostat 

Programmable thermostats are 

both a money and energy saver. 

They allow you to set a comfortable 

temperature when you’re home 

and can be scheduled to lower the 

temperature while you’re away, 

helping you save money by cutting 

down energy usage. 

“Programmable thermostats allow 

homeowners to set the heating 

and cooling of their home to their 

schedule,” said O’Rourke. “It’s one 

less thing for homeowners to worry 

about and they are fairly easy to 

install.”
